Have you ever wanted to be able to read satellite images or build a helicopter? Or wanted to win medals and other awards to show off? If any of these apply to you, BLS Science Team may be the perfect club for you. At BLS Science Team, members have the opportunity to study many scientific topics only grazed by in science class, ranging from hydrogeology to invasive species. If you do not feel like studying, however, there are also building events where you can construct a plethora of different devices such as bottle rockets, airplanes, or even your own Rube Goldberg machine (look it up)!
Throughout the year there are many opportunities to participate in intense competitions and show off what
you know and have accomplished, including the incredibly competitive Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Invitational where schools across the nation convene. Additionally, there is the annual Massachusetts State Science Olympiad, where you will
face off against other schools in Massachusetts. But most people’s favorite aspect of Science Team is getting to make new friends and having fun!

Dear Reader,
Welcome to the new school year! We hope you’re ready
for everything to come, and we encourage you to try new
activities and join new clubs this year. A great opportunity
to get involved is the BLS Extracurricular Fair held this
September 28th.
This issue is a guide to some of the school’s most prominent
STEM clubs, so read up to see what you’re interested in and
what you will check out at the EC Fair. And of course, be sure
to visit Catapulta!

are you interested in math competitions?
improving your skills?
High schoolers — you might be bored in math class, but we promise you, you won’t be bored in Math Team. If you have a competitive spirit and are looking for something great to add to your resume, then Math Team is the perfect club for you. We have practices every Wednesday and Thursday in room 337 (Ms. Leung’s room). During practices, you’ll learn new topics that are not always covered in your typical math class, while working and joking with friends.As part of the Greater Boston Mathematics League (GBML), we compete on the second Wednesday of each month at Brookline High. If we qualify, we also attend the annual state competition at Shrewsbury HighSchool.

Are you interested inparticipating in math
competitions to improve your math skills? Boston
Latin School offers a variety of competitions for all
grade levels. Some, like the Continental Math League
(CML) and American Mathematics Competition
(AMC), are offered by the math department to all students. For
others, though, you have to join the Math Team
or MathCounts!
As for 7th and 8th graders, you are more than welcome to join Math Team, but there are also the MathCounts series competitions. MathCounts is a national mathematics competition that starts at the middle school level. The Middle School Math Club, which competes in MathCounts, meets every Monday in 232 (Ms.Green’s room) although once the MathCounts team is chosen, more practices are recommended. Everyone is welcome to compete at the school level, which is a tryout for the chapter level competition. Some teachers in the past have even given extra credit for participation. The Boston Latin School team has gotten third before at the chapter competition and often advances to the state competition. Top scorers at the State competition get money prizes and advance to

On top of MathCounts, the Middle School Math
Team also competes in other exciting competitions,
like the Lexington Math Tournament (LMT) and
MagMaR, MIT’s Middle School Math Competition. LMT includes a
fast-paced guts round, which includes live scoring and running around to get
your answers in. For Pokemon lovers, MagMaR has some questions that are
related to Pokemon, not to mention the name itself is a Pokemon! Beyond all of the
excitement, though, is a club where you can meet friends that share the same passions as you!
Ever wondered what the internals of your phone, computer, or laptop looked like? Want to gain hands-on experience with electronics and work on your own DIY projects you can take home? We can teach you how! Learn to fix previously broken things like phones and how to upgrade or build your own computer. You’ll be able to participate in activites like building your own battery, or things like building your ownflashlights (before they assign you to do so in Physics, to boot). Towards the beginning of the year, we will start off
with small-scale projects such as a battery made of pennies, and later on move to more complex things such as teardown and repair of phones and cleaning out computers from the school. Furthermore, if you have any electronics such as old phones and/or other appliances lying around, the DIY club will be happy to take them in! We are also offering phone
repair services to anyone who wants them - we’ll fix your broken phone screens
and even replace your batteries, provided you supply the parts
(which are found easily online).

PIXELPixel is a club that focuses mainly on computer-generated art and design. Founded in 2013, Pixel allows students to gain exposure to editing software such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign to produce their own digital art. Since demand for tech literacy in programs such as Photoshop has been growing exponentially over the past few years, Pixel will provide both a facet for creative expression and an opportunity to develop valuable skills.
In 2015, Pixel was awarded a grant to purchase a set of Wacom graphics tablets. Beginning in late 2015, Pixel provided weekly workshops, where students were taught how to use a graphics tablet in conjunction with Adobe Photoshop. The workshops were successful, and some of the student work may be found on Pixel’s website, blspixel.com.
In the past, Pixel has collaborated with MassArt and the Dietch Leadership Institute. They also offer design and copy services to both students and faculty, designing things such as logos, graphic aids, flyers, and so on. They meet on Mondays in room 220.

someday develop games or programs.

Well, if you join Computer Science Club, we can help you to someday realize that dream! This year, we will be exploring a wide variety of software topics, and may even branch out into some specialized hardware like Arduinos. In addition to simply learning about computer science, we also prepare for and compete in competitions such as the American Computer Science League (ACSL). We are also going to open up the playing field for newcomers, so if there is anything you really want to learn, you
can always feel free to ask.
We are all really looking forward to this year, so be sure to

The technological
world is as intriguing and
complex as it is
Robotics is one of the fastest advancing fields in the modern world and holds great potential in what it could do to improve people’s lives. If you are interested in robotics at all, whether you want to start a career in robotics, or if it is a hobby, you must join the Nutrons team! Nutrons is a Northeastern University-based high school robotics team that participates in regional to international competitions. It is made up of students from Boston Latin School, Brookline High School, Revere High School, and Urban Science Academy. The team is mentored by a group of professional engineers, teachers, and college students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northeastern University, and Wentworth. Everyone contributes to the machine that is built to represent our team in competitions. Not only do you learn about robotics, but you will also meet cool new people and get to hang out with them at the local Popeyes. As the most experienced team in the area, Nutrons is also one of the most decorated, with numerous awards in regional and international competitions, and we are still going strong. The team would like to recruit talented individuals like you to continue to spread the joy of robotics
