This library discussion series brings scholars and community members together to explore how selected books illuminate a particular theme. The Havelock-Craven County Public Library and Lifetime Learning Center are partners in presenting this nine-week series. The Thursday night programs include an opportunity to read five books and interact with four visiting scholars to learn more about the authors and discuss the books. Meeting dates for the 2019 programs are on Thursdays, from September 12 to November 14, at the library from 6 to 8 p.m. The program is FREE. Books and space are limited, so please register today by stopping by the library or calling (252) 447-7509.

A Reading and Discussion Series

Let’s Talk About It

Discovering the Literary South:The Louis D. Rubin, JR SeriesAs a novelist, essayist, teacher, editor and publisher, no single figure has done more to “discover” the literary South than Louis Rubin. As such, it is appropriate to name this series in his honor. The books in this series were published within the last twenty years by writers who have moved beyond the Southern hometowns of their youth. Yet they take a long look back, not for nostalgia’s sake, but to bear witness to the full panoply of time’s interactions with place, memory and family.

Sept. 12 - A Virtuous Woman by Kaye Gibbons, presented by scholar Billy Yeargin

Oct. 3 - Clover by Dori Sanders, presented by scholar Jane Andrews

Oct. 17 - Gap Creek by Robert Morgan, presented by scholar Susan Schmidt

Oct. 31 - The Coal Tattoo by Silas House, presented by scholar Billy Yeargin

Nov. 14 - The Jew Store by Stella Suberman, presented by scholar Bill DiNome

Attend one or all five sessions, as your schedule allows. Books are available for pick-up two weeks prior to each event.

REgistration - (252) 447-7509This program is sponsored by a grant from the North Carolina Humanities Council in cooperation with the North Carolina Center for the Book.

FridaART FILM - BIOPICFriday, October 18Orringer Auditorium 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. USA | MEXICO | CANADA (2002)Biography, Drama - 102 mins - Rated R

Frida chronicles the life that Frida Kahlo shared unflinchingly and openly with Diego Rivera, as the young couple

took the art world by storm. From her complex and enduring relationship with her mentor and husband to her illicit and controversial affair with Leon Trotsky, to her provocative and romantic entanglements with women, Frida Kahlo lived a very bold and uncompromising life as a political, artistic, and sexual revolutionary.

This film was directed by Julie Taymor and stars Salma Hayek in her Academy Award-nominated portrayal as Kahlo and Alfred Molina as her husband, Diego Rivera. The movie was adapted by Clancy Sigal, Diane Lake, Gregory Nava, Anna Thomas and unofficially by Edward Norton from the book Frida: A Biography of Frida Kahlo by Hayden Herrera. The film won two Academy Awards for Best Makeup and Best Original Score among six other nominations.

“Passionate, provocative, hilarious, tragic and just dizzyingly beautiful to behold.”

BONUS ART FILM

North Carolina Museum of ArtTuesday, November 12 - DAY TRIPA Partnership with Twin Rivers Artist AssociationThe Lifetime Learning Center and the Twin Rivers Artist Association have joined forces to plan a day trip to the North Carolina Museum of Art to see a very exciting special exhibit: Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Mexican Modernism from the Jacques and Nata-sha Gelman Collection. The exhibit will feature paintings of two artistic icons of the 20th century.

Few artists have captured the public’s imagination with the force of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo (1907–1954) and her husband, the Mexican painter and muralist Diego Rivera (1886–1957). The myths that surrounded them in their lifetime arose not only from their significant bodies of work, but also from their friendships (and conflicts) with leading figures of the time.

Kahlo and Rivera’s works are varied in scope and inspiration: she is best-known for her self-portraits, while he worked as a large-scale muralist in Mexico and the United States. Kahlo’s work is deeply personal, often depicting her own dreams, painful personal experiences and affinity with Mexican culture, while Rivera’s pursues larger looks at history and cultural revolution. Similarly important is the legacy of two of Kahlo and Rivera’s patrons, Jacques and Natasha Gelman. Their unparalleled collection shows the richness of Mexican art through painting, drawing, photography and film.

The registration fee includes a continental breakfast at check-in, comfortable motorcoach transportation, lunch at San Marcos Mexican Restaurant, a special introduction to this exhibit by a NCMA curator and an exhibition ticket. Snacks are served on the return trip!

g GUILTYFriday, January 10

DENMARK (2016)Drama, Crime, Thriller - 85 mins - R

When police officer Asger Holm is demoted to desk work, he expects a sleepy beat as an emergency dispatcher. That all changes when he answers a panicked phone call from a kidnapped woman who then disconnects abruptly. Asger, confined to the police station, is forced to use others as his eyes and ears as the severity of the crime slowly becomes more clear. The search to find the missing woman and her assailant will take every bit of his intuition and skill, as a ticking clock and his own personal demons conspire against him. This innovative and unrelenting Danish thriller uses a single location to great effect, ratcheting up the tension as twists pile up and secrets are revealed.

Blind DateFRANCE (2015)Comedy, Romance - 90 mins - not-rated

When a young woman and professional pianist moves into the apartment next to a grumpy and antisocial inventor of complicated board games, the new neighbors find themselves feeling as though their lives have become a living nightmare. With the walls as thin as a sheet of paper, neither of them can avoid listening to what the other is doing and they soon do everything they can to annoy each other. After reaching a common agreement and establishing a schedule so as not to interrupt the other’s activities, they soon develop an unusual relationship in which they spend every day together, talking but keeping their identities secret and never revealing their names.

Fanny’s JourneyFriday, March 6

FRANCE | BELGIUM (2016)Drama, War - 94 mins - not-rated

Fanny and her sisters attempt to escape Nazi occupied France but face many dangers ahead of them. Based on a true story, this is an incredible tale of bravery, strength and survival, a story of a daring young girl who will stop at nothing and fears no one. In 1943, 13-year-old Fanny and her younger sisters were sent from their home in France to an Italian foster home for Jewish children. When the Nazis arrive in Italy, their caretakers desperately organize the departure of the children to Switzerland. When they are suddenly left on their own, these 11 children do the impossible to reach the Swiss border and freedom.

ShopliftersFriday, April 3

JAPAN (2018)Crime, Drama, Family - 121 mins - R

Japanese master director Hirokazu Koreeda contrasts the frigid emotions of socially correct behavior with the warmth and happiness of a dishonest lower-class Tokyo family, in which money is tight and all methods of obtaining it are permissible, including teaching the children to steal. Who better than Koreeda, a director who whispers instead of shouts, to capture contradictions and issues through a subtle style of storytelling. This film is a thoughtful addition to his parables about happy and unhappy families, studded with memorable characters and believable performances that quietly lead the viewer to reflect on societal values.

Jon Shain and FJ Ventre

Thursday, November 21 - 7:30 p.m. - Orringer Auditorium

Jon Shain is a veteran singer-songwriter who’s been turning heads for years with his words, his fiery acoustic guitar work and his evolved musical style – combining improvised Piedmont blues with bluegrass, swing and ragtime. Shain’s most recent solo disc, Gettin’ Handy with the Blues: A Tribute to the Legacy of WC Handy, was released in January 2018. Shain’s newest release is the gorgeous roots album, Tomorrow Will Be Yesterday Soon, recorded along with long-time collaborator FJ Ventre on bass, who will join him for this concert.

Jon and FJ began playing music together back in 1982 when they met in high school. FJ went on to attend the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, earned a B.A. in Music Performance and Sound Recording and then relocated to Chapel Hill in 2000. FJ has performed with his own group, The Swang Brothers, and is a highly sought after sideman for many projects.

Back by popular demand, Ocracoke Island’s own Molasses Creek returns to the Explorations series this February. As phenomenal songwriters and interpreters of song, Molasses Creek concerts run the gamut from traditional to contemporary acoustic folk, from sweet ballads with ensnaring vocal harmonies, to truly hot instrumentals.

Fiddler Dave Tweedie, Gary Mitchell, Gerald Hampton and Kim France are the four members of this amazing band who together create musical sparks.

The band performs frequently throughout the eastern seaboard and New England, and as far west as Oklahoma and New Mexico. They own and operate Deepwater Theater on Ocracoke, performing and hosting shows there and touring off the island extensively from October-May. Their 14 recordings have received airplay around the world, including releases in 2012 and 2014 reaching the top 5 in the National Folk Charts. They have won awards on “A Prairie Home Companion” and have also received a nomination for European Country Music Association Band of the Year.

CAIN MILL ROADFriday, March 20 - 7:30 p.m. - Orringer Auditorium

Growing up just down the road from Doc Watson, Billboard-charting artists Cane Mill Road rock the traditional bluegrass standards they grew up on, yet boldly tackle writing original music that often walks the lines between Bluegrass, Americana, Old-time and Folk. Audiences love Cane Mill Road’s high-energy performances, easy going rapport and the eclectic mix of originals and standards they present at each of their shows.

Peers in the bluegrass industry voted Cane Mill Road as one of five nominees for the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Momentum Band-of-the-Year for 2018 — an award to honor rising music stars under 30 years of age.

The band’s two albums spent a total of seven weeks on Billboard’s Bluegrass Albums charts. The four young men roam the Blue Ridge Mountain back roads driving between Deep Gap, NC and Rocky Gap, VA to meet and make music together — thus the title track of the band’s sophomore album, Gap to Gap.

Inspired by This year’s Explorations in The ARTS series is inspired by Public Radio East’s THE SOUND, hosted by George Olsen. THE SOUND can be heard weeknights from 8 p.m. to midnight on PRE’s News and Ideas Network and features four hours of Americana, roots rock and contemporary folk music with an emphasis on performers from North Carolina. We were inspired by this program and are pleased to present this exciting line-up of North Carolina musicians.

The Lifetime Learning Center and Premier World Discovery have planned a USA adventure: New York City and the Hudson River Valley. Our group tour begins on May 1st with a flight to New York City, where we’ll meet our professional tour director who will lead us on a fascinating journey to iconic attractions in the city and provide insight into the rich history and scenic beauty of the region.

Our trip begins in Manhattan with a three-night stay. While there participants will enjoy a New York City Tour featuring many of Manhattan’s most famous attractions including Greenwich Village, Chinatown, Times Square, Little Italy, Central Park, The Empire State Building and Rockefeller Center. The group will dine at a popular restaurant and see a Broadway Show. We will visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, followed by an afternoon visit to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum and a view from the top of One World Trade Center

We then leave the city and travel to the scenic Hudson River Valley, a National Heritage Area that is steeped in history, natural beauty and culture. We will enjoy the sites at Hyde Park including a visit to the FDR National Historic Site. We end our tour with a scenic Hudson River Cruise and farewell dinner.

LLC Program Participation & RegistrationDay & Regional Trip Registration Enrollment space for LLC day trips and regional travel programs is limited to the capacity of our motorcoach, the availability of tickets and other booking factors associated with group admissions. To reserve a place on any of these trips, ALL fees must be paid at the time of registration unless otherwise noted. Early registration is highly recommended as trips tend to “sell out” quickly.

To register and pay fees online, visit our website at www.CravenCC.edu/LLC. From the left column select “Registration and Tickets,” then scroll down the page until you find the event that interests you. Follow the instructions to enter your payment information.

If you have questions about the online process or would prefer to register by telephone or send a payment by check, please call us at (252) 638-7351 for assistance. Our office hours are Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Fridays, 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

USA Adventures & International Travel Registration deposits, fees and final payments for out-of-state or out-of-country travel where the LLC contracts with a tour company will follow a payment schedule specific to each trip. Many of the payments for these trips are paid directly to one of our group travel partners. Rules for refunds and the specific details for each trip will be posted on our website.

Please note that Craven CC requires that each person participating in an extended trip must sign a liability waiver and purchase cancellation and post-departure emergency insurance. We offer a reasonably-priced option with each trip that we sponsor. Participants who have other travel insurance coverage may opt-out of our offer, but they are required to provide the College with proof of insurance that specifically documents insurance coverage equivalent to our minimum standards.

Refund PolicyTickets purchased for Explorations in The ARTS events or our Performance Day Trips are not refundable. However, tickets or registrations are transferable. If you are unable to attend an event that you have registered and paid for, you are welcome to share your ticket(s) or transfer the registration to another person(s).

One- to four-day trip registration fees are not refundable. These are the only exceptions: 1) the predetermined minimum enrollment is not met, and the trip is cancelled due to low enrollment; or 2) the College, or the performance, or exhibit venue determines that due to threatening weather or unsafe conditions we must cancel a trip or performance. No refunds will be offered if a new date is selected and the program is completed as advertised.

There are no refunds offered after an event has occurred. A refund of fees to a registered participant will only occur when a cancellation is made in advance of the event AND a replacement from the waiting list registers for the open spot. We understand that “life happens,” so please contact us as soon as possible if last-minute circumstances arise. We often have an extensive waiting list for each day trip and we will attempt to fill a spot if we are notified and have time to contact participants on the waiting list.

Online registration, tickets and additional information are all available through our website:
