Protocol to distribute and synchronize VLAN information

CISCO proprietary Layer 2 protocol

Manages the addition/deletion/renaming of VLANs on anetwork-wide basis

Other vendors use GVRP (GARP VLAN RegistrationProtocol)

One or more interconnected switches sharing same domain name

A switch can be a member of only one VTP domain at a time

The Operation of VTP

The default VTP configuration:

VTP versions: 1 (typical default), 2, 3

VTP modes: server (default), client, transparent




Domains in VTP:

Separate the network into smaller management domains




VTP exchanges domain and VLAN information betweenswitches in the same VTP domain




VTP frame structure:

Frame structure:

VTP Header

VTP Message

VTP information is inserted into Ethernet frame (data field)

Ethernet frame is encapsulated as a 802.1Q frame




VTP frame structure




VTP Revision Number:

Indicates the level of revision for a VTP frame

A 32-bit number, with default value of zero

Increased by adding/deleting a VLAN

A domain name change resets revision number to zero




VTP Advertisements:

Summary advertisements are sent:

Every 5 minutes by a VTP server

To inform VTP-enabled switches of the current VTP config. revision nbr.

Immediately after a configuration change

Subset advertisements are sent after:

Creating/deleting a VLAN

Suspending/activating a VLAN

Changing the name/MTU of a VLAN

Request advertisements are sent if: The VTP domain name changes

A summary advertising arrives with higher conf.rev.nbr.

A subset advertising message is missing

The switch has been reset

A switch can be in one of 3 VTP operating modes

Client

Cannot create, modify or delete VLAN

Server

Can create, modify & delete VLAN

Transparent

Can create, modify, & delete LOCAL VLAN

Forwards VTP advertisements.
