What Countries were involved in/competed for exploration?

• France• England• Spain

What motivated them?

With your elbow partner, brainstorm reasons why Europeans would want to explore.

Economic Reasons (GOLD)• Explorers sought (looked for):

– Gold– Natural Resources

• Fish• Animal Pelts

– Beaver– Bear– Deer– Etc.

• Forests• Raw Goods that could be

finished in the home country and then sold abroad for huge profits= Mercantilism

God• Explorers wanted to

spread their religion to the Native Americans

• Many Native Americans converted because they were threatened with death if they did not convert

Glory

• Many explorers hoped to attain personal wealth and fame for their exploration!

• Think of Christopher Columbus… he is still world famous!

The Columbian Exchange

• People, animals and plants, and diseases were being moved across the Atlantic Ocean

• This exchange became known as the Columbian Exchange or the Triangle of Trade

• Diseases like Smallpox were devastating to Native Americans, who had never been exposed to them and were not immune

• Historians estimate that between 1519-1619, Native American populations decreased by 90-95%

• Below is a quote from a Spanish Missionary in Mexico talking about smallpox & its effect on Native Americans

“There was a great havoc. Very many died of it. They could not walk. . . . They could not move; they could not stir; they could not change position, nor lie on one side; nor face down, nor on their backs. And if they stirred, much did they cry out. Great was its destruction.”

Effects of the Spanish on Native Americans

• Spanish brought:– Catholicism to Native

Americans– New Governments– Diseases like Smallpox

that killed huge numbers of Native Americans

– Enslavement of many Native Americans

outpost set up to spread Catholicism to the indigenous people.

• The Spanish used religion to assimilate the Native Americans into the Spanish Colonial System.

• Time span of Missions in GA: 1568-1684
