Pharmacy Pet Healthcare Training Programme

Welcome to this third module in the Pharmacy Pet Healthcare series. This module will extend your knowledge about the management of flea and tick infestations, and includes hints and tips about running a successful pet health section in the pharmacy with support from FRONTLINE Spot On.

Pharmacy and pet healthAbout 500,000 visits are made by pet owners to pharmacies every day1: with almost half of all households in the UK owning at least one pet2, that’s a lot of opportunities to offer pet healthcare advice.

Only 13% of cat owners and 25% of dog owners treat their pet as often as is recommended for effective flea control3. Fleas and ticks not only cause problems for cats and dogs they can also effect human health. This means the pharmacy is a great place to offer advice on the avoidance and management of infestations if they do occur.

Nearly 50% of owners are not aware when their pet has fleas4.

Did you knowExplaining the life cycle of a flea not only helps pet owners understand the importance of regular treatment, to ensure that the welfare of their pets is protected, but also helps keep health risks to the family minimised. Fleas can be picked up anywhere in the neighbourhood, commonly known as ‘Hitchhiker’ fleas.

FRONTLINE Spot On is an adulticide. It breaks the flea life cycle by killing adult fleas within 24 hours of them leaping onto treated pets.

Advice to help manage customer expectations

There are misconceptions that no fleas should be seen on a pet that has been treated with FRONTLINE Spot On, but there are many reasons why fleas may be seen, which are not related to the product’s efficacy.

Insecticidal treatments and vacuuming does not kill pupae, it encourages

Treat all cats and dogs in the household as often as recommended and according to label instructions.

Wash the pet’s bedding above 60°C to help remove eggs, larvae and pupae. Vacuum all flooring and furnishings to generate warmth and vibration to encourage pupae to hatch.

In the case of a home infestation, use an environmental spray containing an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) to kill eggs and larvae. Allow treated pets continued access to infested areas to make sure newly hatched fleas are killed on contact with the pet.

Provide the right environment for pupae to hatch by turning up the heating, placing damp towels on radiators and bowls of hot water in infested rooms to increase the humidity.

them to hatch within the home.Hatching can take up anywhere from 1–12 months, with 3 months being the average, it is normal for owners to see adult fleas on their pets for this period of time, if there is a home infestation. Once hatched, adult fleas jump onto the treated pet where they will be killed by FRONTLINE Spot On.

Also, fleas leap onto pets from environments where other infested animals have been, such as a gardens or parks.

Nothing stops fleas from jumping on to a treated pet so it is normal to see fleas for up to 24 hours after it has been outside. Fleas are also more visible as the treatment causes hyperexcitation before death.

ActivityMost people love to talk about their pets, so do ask about them. It obviously helps if you know they have a pet – is their dog sitting outside or is there pet food in their shopping? Other ways to start a conversation about pets include:

The trouble with ticksTicks can be found anywhere pets like to exercise and explore: gardens, forests, fields and parks. Pets easily pick up ticks as they brush past grass and vegetation in these areas, which is why 43% of owners have seen a tick on their dog5, despite being very difficult to see.

Ticks can pose a threat to human health as they cause irritation and can transmit disease such as Lyme Disease.

Tick numbers are rising in the UK6 and the problem is set to worsen as changes in the Pet Travel Scheme means travelling pets are no longer required to be treated for ticks before entering the UK. This means we are likely to see more European ticks being brought into the UK that carry serious diseases7. It also increases the risk of UK pets picking up foreign diseases when abroad.

Ticks are most active during spring and autumn, but humid summers also increase their activity. You should advise customers to check their animals thoroughly and regularly for ticks, especially after exercise. They should also treat pets regularly using a product such as FRONTLINE Spot On, which kills all three of the main UK and European ticks, to help prevent tick-borne disease.

FRONTLINE Spot On is not a tick repellent. Once the pet is treated, any ticks attached, or which then attach, will die within 48 hours. This is before the maximum disease transmission period. Once dead, the tick should drop off, but if not, may be removed very gently using a tick hook, making sure the mouthparts are removed from within the skin.

How FRONTLINE Spot On works

FRONTLINE Spot On is water resistant so the pet can swim or be bathed as usual from 48 hours after application.

Did you know

FRONTLINE Spot On is raising consumer awareness about its product

with TV, online, POS and Pets Will Be

Pets campaign during 2013.

Did you know

• FRONTLINE Spot On dissolves in the oils and sebum on the pet’s skin. It spreads across the skin and coat by diffusion, like water spreads across blotting paper.

• It enters the sebaceous glands of the skin so is constantly replenished through oils and sebum onto the skin and coat.

• Fleas and ticks on the pet come into contact with the product on the skin, not via the pet’s bloodstream, and are killed through hyperexcitation of their central nervous system.

*In cases of severe flea infestations, or animals diagnosed with Flea Allergy Dermatitis by a veterinary surgeon, apply monthly. During warmer periods, larger numbers of flea pupae will be hatching and lead to a higher environmental burden requiring monthly protection.

The new ‘Pets Will Be Pets’ £1.2M FRONTLINE Spot On TV campaign supported by a multi-media digital, PR and in-store campaign – there’s also a competition for your customers to enter too.
