On holiday in Funes/VillnössFind peace and relaxation in one of the most picturesque valleys of the Dolomites. Enjoy an active vacati-on and cultural experience in the land of the “pale mountains”. The magnificent Odle/Geisler mountains are the famous landmark: with their prominent peaks, they „crown“ the valley.

Dolomites UNSCO World HeritageThe Dolomites are unique from a geological, botanical and scenic point of view. They cannot be compared with any other mountain range in the world. For this reason, they are among the most beautiful and valuable landscapes across the globe that have been recognised by UNESCO. On June 26, 2009 the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO added the Dolomites to the World Herita-ge List. The inclusion on this list is the world’s highest form of recognition for a natural site, a sort of “Nobel Prize for natural assets”.

UNESCO Information Centre The inclusion of the Dolomites on the UNESCO World Herita-ge List is committed to the protection, preservation and enhan-cement of this unique natural site. It is therefore important to do everything possible to draw people‘s attention on the extraordi-nary value of this recognition. With the establishment of the UN-ESCO Centre at Malga Zannes/Zanser Alm we constructed a mo-dern building that is tackling exactly these issues. The fascination of the Dolomites and the emotional involvement of the visitors are crucial to achieve the goal.

Welcome to the UNESCO World Heritage

Puez-Odle Nature ParkThe Nature Park The park’s karstic highlands, majestic rock faces, rolling Alpine pastures set off against bizarre looking backdrops of cleft mountains, valleys formed by extreme ero-sion, and dark coniferous forests compri-se a multifarious landscape that is rarely found in such a small area. From a geolo-gical point of view the Puez-Odle Nature Park can be identified as “the annals of the Earth’s history”. Here you can find all of the rock types, sediment strata and we-athering forms that are characteristic of the Dolomites. Moreover, the great variety of fossils provide a wonderful insight into the ages of contemporary history.

The Nature Park HouseThe central source of information of the nature park is the Nature Park House in S. Maddalena. Its task is to bring visitors clo-ser to nature and to improve their geologi-cal, biological and cultural knowledge. Th-erefore, the exhibition areas „Touch and conquer the mountains“ are dedicated to the geology of the Dolomites and to the al-pinist Reinhold Messner. The wonders of nature and the incredible riches of the Na-ture Park will increase the enthusiasm of all generations.

Nature Experience Trail Intact forests, meadows in full bloom and a preserve at the foot of the towering Odle peaks. The Nature Experience Trail on Mal-ga Zannes/Zanser Alm is the first wheel-chair accessible trail and it aims to bring visitors closer to the unique natural and cultural landscapes of the Nature Park Puez-Odle. It is a beautiful circular path, which is equipped with panels that provide information about the genesis and the na-tural features of the area.

Guided Naturalistic HikesIn the heart of the Dolomites, in the Puez-Odle Nature Park, hiking through the natural countryside and discovering its be-auties is an unforgettable experience. Du-ring a guided naturalistic hike, qualified professional guides will lead you step by step to the most wonderful places of the park. Under their direction, you may ad-mire alpine meadows in full bloom and a spectacular panorama, and you will under-stand the importance of protecting such a complex and vulnerable ecosystem.

Power supply and water power In times of climate change, energy costs and economic crisis an independent ener-gy supply is of fundamental importance. The consumed energy of Funes/Villnöss Valley derived exclusively from local, rene-wable resources such as water, wood and sun. Three hydroelectric power plants, two district heating plants and a photovoltaic array ensure a self-sufficient energy sup-ply of our valley. Thanks to the electrifica-tion of the alpine huts and the fibre optic wiring, we meet the highest economic de-mands.

Deep-rooted traditions Traditions are very deep-rooted and people are trying to preserve them for future generations. Even today, there is a continued adherence to rural customs, which shine in a renewed, fresh splendour. Religious faith and traditions are firmly tied together. Sacral celebrations and processions are typical traditions of our territory, and they ex-press the deep love for our homeland.

Farmhouse HolidaysThe greatest treasure of our valley is the breathtaking, unspoilt nature. A farmhouse holiday is the best way to discover and enjoy this treasure. Children can feed and stroke the farm animals, while the adults relax by lying in the sun or reading a book. Well-furnis-hed apartments, a wide choice of leisure activities and homemade products make a farmhouse holiday a very special one.

Firmly rooted in nature

“Villnösser Brillenschaf” SheepSome farmers of the Funes/Villnöss Valley breed a very special sheep. One that really would be extinct, if there weren’t those far-mers, who are fighting for the preservation of the breed. South Ty-rol‘s oldest sheep breed has a characterizing dark pigmentation around the eyes, and it seems like they are wearing glasses. Vari-ous high-quality products such as tender and delicate lamb or soft sheep’s wool are market by small local businesses.

11

Genuine fresh farmer productsGarden-fresh, wholesome and seasonal farmer products. The high quality farmer products of the Val di Funes come exclusively from local agriculture. In addition to fruits and vegetables in season, you can find eggs, dairy products, honey, wine, herbs, homemade jams and juices, and even handmade sheep’s wool products.

Beef breed “Graues Geisler Rind”The beef breed „Graues Geisler Rind, perhaps we could call it „Grey Alpine“, meets the highest quality standards and comes exclusively from animals raised in the valley. It was determined that only the animals of this specific race can graze on the pastu-res of the Funes/Villnöss Valley. Furthermore, the transhumance of the animals is essential because the herbs of the alpine pastu-res are particularly nutritious and give the meat a unique flavour. One of the main ideas is to give cattle breeders in the valley a new perspective and add value through the production of high quality beef. The idea is also supported by the local gastronomy.

Hiking in the mountainsA sea of colourful flowers, grazing cows, fresh mountain air and spectacular views. Hiking in the Dolomites of Funes/Villnöss Val-ley is something magical. Get barefoot into a clear mountain stre-am, lie in the grass and enjoy the sunny day or have a rest in one of our alpine huts. The picturesque surroundings of our beautiful nature guarantee wonderful hiking experiences.

View of the valleyLying in the meadows on the edge of the forest, it smells of fresh grass. Butterflies dancing in the air and blades of grass swaying in the wind. The clouds drift scud across the sky and the dark forests give a mystical impression. There is no need to climb the highest peaks to enjoy breathtaking views. Many idyllic places on the bot-tom of the valley are waiting to be discovered.

Valley of trailsThe best way to explore the valley is to walk and to hike. Nature lovers may enjoy many hiking trails, stretched across meadows and forests, such as quiet walks, easy excursions towards the al-pine huts, funny family excursions, exciting themed trails and also challenging via ferrata routes. Each trail offers wonderful panoramic views, and deep insights into a still intact natural and cultural landscape.

Via FerrataThe Dolomites have always been a paradise for climbers. No-wadays, via ferrata routes attract many hikers who want to re-ach even the highest peaks. Sometimes the routes are steep and exposed. Equipped with fixed steel cables, ladders and other fixed anchors they offer a good level of safety, but only if you have the appropriate equipment. The strenuous ascent is rewarded at the top with a magnificent 360-degree panorama.

Rock Climbing The mountains and walls of rock of the Dolomites are an attrac-tion for climbers, fueled by hunger for the extraordinary, and therefore, the rock climbing areas of the Val di Funes are parti-cularly interesting. The large boulders at Passo delle Erbe/Würz-joch are harmoniously embedded into the surrounding natu-ral landscape. The climbing area near the „Adolf Munkel Trail“ is located at the bottom of the Odle peaks and provides climbing routes in almost all levels of difficulty. The surrounding environ-ment is suitable also for children with a breathtaking panora-mic view.

Reinhold Messner Climber, writer, mountain farmer, politician and museum founder.

Reinhold Messner was born on 17th September 1944 in Bressano-ne/Brixen and grew up in the Funes/Villnöss Valley. He started climbing mountains at the age of five, and has been one of the world’s most outstanding mountaineers. He has achieved over a hundred first ascents, and was the first to climb all of the world’s 8000-metre peaks. He has crossed on foot the Antarctic, Green-land, Tibet, the deserts Gobi and Taklamakan.Between his journeys, Reinhold Messner lives in South Tyrol, whe-re he writes books and runs the Messner Mountain Museum. He has received literary prizes and international awards, and he is ho-norary member of the Royal Geographical Society.

Discovering tasty ways

Baking breadBaking together traditional bread in a wood-burning oven is fun and not difficult. During the summer, children will not get bored because when preparing fresh bread the traditional way on the farm, their help is needed. The farmers demonstrate step by step how to mix all ingredients to form a dough. People are invited to lend a hand,

and while the dough rises, they may dis-cover the farm, the garden and the ani-mals such as cows, calves, pigs and rab-bits. Finally, the loaves will be baked in a wood-burning oven and, afterwards, tasted together. An interesting and exciting ex-perience for the whole family.

On the sunny slopes of Tiso, in the Dolo-mite valley of Funes/Villnöss, grow shel-tered, chestnuts, fruit and vines. There is hardly something more interesting than to discover these autumnal flavours in a ru-stic, peasant „Stube“ and taste the delici-ous local agricultural products. Nowadays, the custom of „Törggelen“ is well known. Traditional Tyrolean dishes such as “Knö-

del”, cabbage and smoked meat, sausages, bacon and cheese as well as the new wine are part of a typical „Törggele“ evening. Fi-nally, sweet „Krapfen“ and roasted chest-nuts are served. „Törggelen“ is not only a tasty way to discover the local gastronomy but also the Tyrolean history and tradition.

Delicacies to tempt your palate

Alpine flavoursThe alpine huts inside the Nature Park Puez-Odle in the Funes/Villnöss Valley re-flect with their dishes the identity of the local cuisine. The traditional South Tyrole-an dishes enjoy increasing popularity and are served according to passed on reci-pes, or revised by adding a refined touch. Hikers and mountain lovers may choose between typical dishes such as Speck and cheese, game, a variey of “Knödel”, the so-called „Bauerngröstl“, fried „Krapfen“

and, of course, a juicy apple “Strudel”. Af-ter a long hike across blooming meadows and through the dark woods, at the foot of the Odle or close to the Peitlerkofel, many original and traditional alpine huts await your visit.

Farmer’s Festival The farmers’ festival at Tiso/Teis is one of South Tyrol’s most traditional festivals and a true journey through the crafts and customs of the Funes/Villnösser Valley, which here come to life again. You may watch how to do old farm crafts, such as threshing, making butter, baking bread, weaving baskets, felting and woodcarving. The sheep shearing is especially popular with children. On the farmers’ market, you may find local agricultu-ral products, and while you taste homemade specialties, in the alleys of the village music groups and bands will be playing.

Speck FestivalThe Speck Festival attracts gourmets to the small village of St. Magdalena in Funes, right at the foot of the Geisler group, to enjoy South Tyrolean Speck and breathtaking views of the beautiful landscape. Over the weekend, the bacon is here at its best. Hans Mantin-ger, better known as „Gletscherhons“, impresses the visitors with his masterful skills in Speck slicing. On Sunday, the last day of the festival, the Speck-Queens give away pieces of South Tyrolean Speck. The Speck Festival offers not only culinary delights, but also a lot of traditional folk music, a farmers‘ market with regional specialties and crafts, and crispy bread fresh from the oven.
