Julie Phillips, 55, a lifelong resi-dent of Fond du Lac, strongly attributes her deep-rooted faith for helping her become a

strong, courageous person. Julie’s maternal grandparents emigrated from Greece — as did her father, Steve. Her mother, Virginia was a first-generation Greek-American. Julie was the youngest of three children. Her sister, Arlene is now deceased and her other sister, Donna is married and lives in Mount Prospect, Ill.

At 3 months of age Julie’s parents took her to a photo session at Larsen Studio in Fond du Lac. The photographer noted to her parents that she did not respond to simple c o m m a n d s babies usually would respond to during a photo session.

“My parents took me to see Dr. (Frank) Cerny, a very well-known and prom-inent  ophthalmologist,” she said. “I was diagnosed with congenital cata-racts with an undeveloped nerve. My parents were devastated.”

Julie’s parents referred to Cerny as ‘an angel from heaven.’ To this day, Julie has felt the same way.

Proud of her Greek-American heritage, Julie is an active member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Fond du Lac and has sang in the church choir since the age of 12. She is also president of the Greek ladies church group, PHILOPTOC, translated from Greek meaning “friend of the poor.”

Although Julie was born and raised in Fond du Lac — she attended school in Oshkosh — mainstreamed into regular classrooms. Julie cred-its Tom Guy, director of attendance and transportation  for the Fond du Lac School District for arranging her  transportation to Oshkosh.  She graduated from Oshkosh West in 1979.

“Larry Klausch, who once served

Cover Story: Julie Phillipsas head of the choral music depart-ment at Oshkosh, took time with me and taught me voice,” Julie said. “It meant the world to me.”

After high school, Julie attended UW-Fond du Lac from 1979 to 1981. She began with general educa-tion courses, but soon switched to music education, ultimately earn-ing an associate’s of arts degree.

“Because of my love for music, I was encouraged to attend Marian College (now Marian University) from 1981 to 1983,” Julie said. “I was the recipient of the first music education degree from the college.”

Julie’s love of music began at an early age. She had always been exposed to Greek music in her parents’ home and started to sing with family at the age of 2. Julie’s talent soon became apparent as a youngster and

she started to take  voice lessons. She fondly recalled her first voice teacher in seventh grade as Audrey Palmquest, a music teacher from Oshkosh West.

“She volunteered her time with me after school,” Julie said of Palmquest.  “Those were the best lessons.”

She sings with the Fond du Lac Women’s Chorus and is president of that group. She has sang in the South Shore Choral group for 34 years, and previously sang in the Green Lake Festival Chorus under the direction of world-renowned choral conductor Sir David Willcocks. Julie has also sang with the FDL Symphonic Band.

Singing, and practicing singing, baking, cooking, writing and house-work keep her busy.

“I’m on the go a lot,” Julie joked.Julie considers writing a hobby

and does much of the correspon-dence for her church, including the annual Greek church picnic, and is the publicity chairwoman for the Women’s Chorus.

She is a freelance singer, has sang for weddings and funerals, commu-nity events and many times sang as a soloist.

“My hobby, my love, my work … all combined,” she explained.

Many times, as a little girl, Julie could not deal with her blindness.

“It was very frustrating, but thank God, I had very patient parents and loving family and friends around me who helped me accept this, and my faith in God,” she said.

Julie has fond memories of grow-ing up and working in her parents’ cafe, Phillips Cafe, on South Main Street, at the same location from 1946 to 1982.

“It was a family-operated café,” she said. “Dad did all the cooking, but we kids helped out with some of the cooking, cleaning and waiting on tables.”

The Coney Island hotdogs (conies) were their specialty, and her dad was known for the hot works.

“You have to have faith, or you won’t make it,”

— Julie Phillips

“Dad’s special recipe was known as Steve’s conies,” she said. “It is a guarded family recipe, and Dad wanted to keep it in the family and not be sold.”

She said in previous years the special Coney Island hotdogs were sold at the farmers market with her dad’s recipe. This past July, Julie was requested to make Steve’s Coney Island sauce for a large family gathering. She humbly stated, “It received rave reviews and was such a nice feeling.”

Julie considers herself very fortu-nate to be loved and supported — not only by her sister Donna, three nieces and a nephew — also her many friends in the community, especially Darlene Oelke.

Even though Julie has been visu-ally impaired all her life, she has made peace with herself.

“I am blessed with all the special people who make my life so perfect,” she said. “I really feel lucky.”

Kenosha, Wisconsin is full of surprises — so get in your car and discover

their Harbor Park located on the lakefront. You can walk or ride a bike along a beautiful stretch of Lake Michigan with charming restaurants, museums and a sculpture walk displaying fourteen pieces of outdoor art, and a red trolley car lakefront tour. One of the museums houses a three-story-high woolly mammoth found in a local farm field. The other museum is dedicated to the Civil War with an emphasis on Wisconsin.

On a recent visit I observed the installation of new sculptures — a pig playing a saxophone — and a giraffe made from recycled items. Artist Joseph Gagnepain enthusiastically shared how he finds and recycles materials for his sculptures. The Arts Fund of Kenosha sponsors the sculpture walk and the sculptures

are replaced every two years.I was impressed with the beauty,

and uniqueness of the pieces shown.

ISABELL M. MUELLER, ATTORNEY

Divorce is a painful and overwhelming process, as anyone who has gone

through it knows. The decision to divorce generates additional diffi cult decisions, such as custody and placement arrangements, how to separate and re-title assets, whether to sell the family home or relocate to a new one and how to pay for future child-related expenses. The decision to update the estate planning is often overlooked or put on the “back burner.” Divorce, however, is an event that requires an immediate update to your estate plan

It is a common misconception that the divorce nullifi es any existing estate plan. It does not. In fact, the effect of divorce on your estate planning documents varies. For instance, if you had a health care power of attorney naming your former spouse as your primary agent and one of your siblings as

FUNERAL & ESTATE PLANNING

❚ LIFE❚ LOVE❚ LOSS❚ LEGACY

FUNERAL & ESTATE PLANNING

❚ LIFE❚ LOVE❚ LOSS❚ LEGACY

Estate planning and divorceyour alternate agent, even if you still want your sibling to be your agent, the divorce has actually voided the entire instrument. You no longer have a valid health care power of attorney. However, if you had signed a fi nancial durable power of attorney with your former spouse as your primary agent, and you had named your former brother-in-law as the alternate agent because he was “good with money,” after the divorce, your ex is no longer your fi nancial power of attorney, but your former brother-in-law still is. Lastly, with regard to a will or a revocable trust, while the divorce may nullify any provisions in favor of your former spouse, it does not necessarily invalidate any provisions naming any of your former in-laws. Because there is no consistency in the effect of divorce on your individual estate planning documents, the only way to properly address the situation is to start over. As always, your life is a work in progress and your estate plan should be as well.
