Update on Monticello Article courtesy of Allison Maass

The City of Monticello is experiencing an exciting time as redevelopment and new development plans have started to advance! With this comes many benefits to the community, as new commercial opportunities are arising, along with improvements to roads and parks.

“We are seeing a lot of retail interest starting to come back in,” Monticello Mayor Clint Herbst said. This year, Monticello welcomed Quality RV, Marshalls and Runnings Farm & Fleet. Aldi, a discount supermarket chain, will be opening later this year and Goodwill has just broken ground for a new store.

DowntownMonticello’s downtown is looking to be revamped, also. Herbst said that the city has plans to redevelop parts of the downtown area, and rebuild in areas where the buildings have reached the end of their lifespan. Empty stores, have been left empty for a purpose, Herbst has said. These buildings have been acquired by the city, and developers have shown interest in purchasing. The city plans to remove the old buildings and use tax increment financing so the new developers can buy down the cost of the land and more money will be available to go into the business.

“Monticello is really emerging as the main commercial development area between St. Cloud and Maple Grove,” City Administrator Jeff O’Neill stated.

BriDge crossingMonticello and surrounding cities have begun planning for another crossing over the Mississippi River. “It’s a safety issue only having one bridge, and it’s a long way around if something was to happen to it”, Mayor Herbst remarked. Citizens will have to wait at least 20 years before they will see the finished product due to all of the planning and money that goes into a project this size. Continued on page 13

roaD constructionEvery year comes a new round of road construction, and this year is no different. Reconstruction on I-94 began this spring and is expected to be completed in November. This project will impact traffic with narrow lanes, lane shifts, 55 mph speed limit and short-term and long-term ramp closures. The intersection of Highway 25 and Broadway will also be undergoing changes as the city plans to add turn lanes and pedestrian access as well as making it wider to ease congestion. To stay current on I-94 construction details go to:

mndot.gov/d3/monti/

ParksMonticello is known for it’s 28 beautiful parks and miles of trails. River Mill Park will be getting new playground equipment, and a nature trail will be added at Rolling Woods Park.

Being on a major river, Monticello has always been a great location for businesses to grow and people to live. O’Neill has stated that housing in the city has been picking up, “We are seeing more and more interest in Monticello as a place to live since the recession.” What O’Neill loves most about the city is the Mississippi river, and he is happy to see that more businesses and people are coming to notice what an amazing place Monticello really is.
