Experience Design - Winter 2015

Transcript of Experience Design - Winter 2015
HELLO! I’m a British designer, who cares deeply about creating memorable experiences that benefit society through good product design and seamless services.
People often ask me what I do, and I feel an Industrial Designer is probably the wrong term. I’m a designer because I believe we can use design as a force for societal and environmental change. I tackle problems with a very open mind, and as a result, my responses to design challenges vary. Sometimes I design products, while another brief might require a service rethink.
Whilst I can design products for mass-manufacture, I prefer not to design short-lived products that will end up in landfill in 10 years time. I believe in giving products lasting value, and designing from cradle to grave. A big part of that is the thorough research phase I believe is crucial in order to understand users’ needs.
I believe an important factor behind the success of any product is a coherent, personal service – a positive, memorable experience that embodies the brand. That’s why product design and service design are inseparable.
Thanks for reading!

“Harry joined us as a work experience student for one week in July 2014, but equipped himself well and contributed to the team sufficiently to warrant his placement being extended to a summer internship. This was an unusual move for the studio as we generally do not offer internships.
He worked with the Garden Bridge team initially developing design ideas for bollard lighting, latterly extending into an exploration of the family of designed items to be located on the bridge (benching, bollards, CCTV columns, etc.).
Throughout Harry showed an exceptional level of engagement, analytical thinking and proposition making, quickly becoming embedded within the team. He has strong concepts and good presentation skills visually and verbally. We would recommend him without reservation.”

Grease Buster is a new recycling service that collects people’s waste cooking grease, and converts it into biodiesel for use in vehicles.
We designed how the service would operate, its funding model, and a campaign to capture people’s imaginations despite it being a dreary topic.

Newcastle Council won a £10m grant to spend on cycling. Most of that will go
towards infrastructure.
Infrastructure alone won’t get people cycling, so we were asked to find new opportunities
to get people on their bikes.
Can the fun factor be used tomake the cycling budget go further?

Winner of a competition set by Mars & Wood for Trees. The brief was to design a way to launch one of their existing chocolate brands into emerging markets.
13th November 2014
MARS Chocolate, Wood for Trees and the students of 3rd Year BA (Hons) Design for Industry at Northumbria University were involved in an intensive, 3 day, strategic design thinking & ideation workshop in November 2014.
This letter acknowledges the involvement of Harry Vos working alongside his peers and in collaboration with MARS Chocolate & Wood for Trees. The students were given 1 day to understand and interpret market, user and competitive insights to create thought provoking solutions to a strategic design problem across international markets. The students developed and refined valuable, relevant and stimulating concepts building in feedback from the project team.
--
Harry was shortlisted from over 50 others after the first day of the intensive workshop.
The remaining 2 days of the project involved working with 12 other shortlisted students to develop, prototype and communicate their solutions with a higher level of detail. The students responded well to the challenge and were able to create a wide ranging and refined selection of concepts.
--
Harry was 1 of 3 winners selected from the shortlisted group as a result of the engaging, inspiring and exciting work which they showed.
Amongst the many insights, ideas and solutions which the students presented, many will be explored further with the intention that a select few be developed refined and tested in their respective markets.
