In little more than a decade, Kaikoura has become New Zealands premier eco-tourism destination, attracting a million visitors annually. While here, visitors are greeted by a breathtaking sight, the Kaikoura mountain range on one side, and the sea on the other. As well as this stunning natural beauty, there are Kaikouras famous marine attractions, including whale and bird watching, or swimming with dolphins and seals.Once whales and seals were hunted off the Kaikoura coast, today the only hunting is by visitors with cameras. For those wishing to see more of the countryside, there are several different ways, by quad-bike, horseback, airplane, helicopter or foot as the district has numerous walkways and tracks for visitors to explore.History buffs are also catered for in Kaikoura, with historic Fyffe House and the district museum full of

mementoes of Kaikouras colourful past. For those who like their adventures in or under water, Kaikoura has long been a magnet for the recreational snorkeller or serious diver. Fishing, gathering shellfish and other bounty from the sea are favourite past times, but please respect the environment and the resource and keep within Ministry of Fisheries guidelines.Walking or whale watching can give you an appetite and Kaikoura has a host of cafes, restaurants and takeaway food outlets for the hungry visitor to sample their cuisine.

And at the end of the day, you can spend the night, or several nights, at one of Kaikouras many motels and camping grounds, some of which are national award winners, or alternatively at the budget priced backpackers hostels.Whatever you decide to do during your visit to Kaikoura, we hope you enjoy your stay here.

The small seaside town of Kaikoura famous for its whales, dolphins and crayfish is also world-renowned for its waves.Cradled under the Seaward Kaikoura Mountain range lies an abundance of waves varying from gentle slow breaking waves to the faster breaking hollowed variety better suited to the more experienced surfer. In my opinion the independent traveling surfer passing through Kaikoura would defi nitely benefi t

from stopping over for a few days as it is a very consistent area for waves even when there is a lack of movement it is never too long before the swell picks up again.Kaikoura surfing is famous for two surfi ng points in particular Mangamaunu and Kahautara . Both easily qualify as world class standard with long winding waves and fast hollow tubes as good as youll fi nd anywhere.Although there are many different surf breaks

in and around the Kaikoura coast I have given a description of only the most well known points as some of the breaks are either too fickle or secret and known only to the local surfi ng fraternity. However, if you are nice to them they may be persuaded to show you some of the best waves youve every seen! Good luck.MangamaunuBest on a north-south west swell its a really long right breaking point wave. Best winds are south-

south-west.MeatworksThe most consistent wave in Kaikoura, its a beach break and gets swell from north south, best winds are south-westerly.KahautaraOne of the best waves in Kaikoura, it breaks best in a southerly swell with a norwest wind and can be surfed small or big from one to four metres and is well known for its speed and tubes.

Heres your chance to give something back and help ensure NZ remains as beautiful tomorrow as youve enjoyed today.Trees for Travellers offers a unique opportunity to plant native NZ trees in Kaikoura, which will offset the carbon youve released while travelling to, and around, the country. (Seven mature trees absorb about half-a-tonne of carbon in

their lifetime [100 years]. The weight of a passenger on a long-haul aircraft releases about half-a-tonne of carbon on the return trip from Europe to NZ = takes seven trees one-hundred years to re-absorb the carbon. One mature tree produces enough oxygen to support two humans).Trees for Travellers selects parcels of land which are protected from

The Kaikoura ranges rise to 2,600 metres from sea level. The sea floor drops to 1,200 metres only 500 metres from the shore.More Maori pa sites can be seen here than anywhere else on the South Island. In the 1990s the Kaikoura Black-Eyed Gecko was discovered in the Seaward Kaikoura ranges.Council provides a weekly recycling collection throughout the District, and do not fund a rubbish collection this ensures we are moving closer to Zerowaste to landfi ll.The Kaikoura Kiwi better known as the Huttons Shearwater breed nowhere else in the world.Seals, dolphins, penguins, albatross and whales can be seen most days of the year. The largest Moa egg found in New Zealand was buried in Kaikoura.

An insight into the past and what made Kaikoura what it is today will be gained by taking an historical walk around the old town centre. The walk takes approximately one and a half hours.Walking south from the Information Centre you will see the Garden of Memories. The war memorial inside the gardens honours the Kaikoura men who were killed in World World One. The main gates were erected as a tribute to Mrs Lydia Washington who established and tended the gardens for twenty years. The whalebone arches (whale jaw bones) on the paths were donated by South Bay whalers. The first Kaikoura Public School was built on the corner of the Esplanade and Killarney Street in 1876 and a new building was opened in 1906 when the original was destroyed by fire. The demolition of this building in the 1980s made way for the present Kaikoura Primary School.Former Post Office buildings built in 1893 were situated on the corner of Killarney and Torquay Streets with the present Post Office relocating to new West End premises in 1983. Communications in the district were transformed with the opening of the Kaikoura Telephone Exchange catering for just sixteen subscribers in 1909. Backpacker accommodation now operates from this site.Kaikouras first church, St Peters Anglican Church was built in 1873-4. The present church was constructed in 1905 and visitors are welcome to look around the churches interior after obtaining a key at the Vicarage. Many of the old town houses and cottages have gone but a few remaining buildings are situated mostly in Torquay Street. On the corner opposite the New Commercial Hotel where the small holiday cottage is located the Kaikoura Hotel was built in 1864.As you move on to No 14 Brighton Street this was the original site of a Temperance Movement built hall which later became the Town Hall. Here in 1906 the fi rst motion picture was screened in Kaikoura. Later on in the mid 1930s the Mayfair Picture Theatre was built at No. 80 The Esplanade and is now the only art deco public building in present day Kaikoura. The Kaikoura Star originally published the newspaper from an office at No. 76 The Esplanade with the fi rst publication hitting the town on November 2, 1880. The Kaikoura Star now operates from premises in the main town area. These are just a few of the reminders of Kaikouras historical past. For further information about the different sites as well as this historic walk you can visit the Kaikoura Museum and Archives at Ludstone Road. This article was taken from the Kaikoura Historical Walk booklet by Pam Garbes.

One of the most iconic images in New Zealand is that of the inside of a paua shell. Early Maori fisherman used the shells to make fishing lures to catch species such as kahawai. Today people use paua shells for a diverse range of products. Once used as ash trays (and they also make effective soap holders) people now chose to use paua shells in more artistic ways. Paua shells are ideal for inlays in wooden furniture. Paua shells are show cased in several jewellery shops in Kaikoura also.

Paua shells cannot be sold or traded unless sourced from an approved paua quota holder. Unless you gather your own

paua by snorkelling, the best way to get the shells is to fi nd beach washed shells- which litter the beaches at Kaikoura. Paua shells themselves are becoming increasingly commercially valuable and often sell for $5-10 dollars each, yet with a little luck you can gather your own.

Paua are found all along Kaikoura’s coastline and Kaikoura boosts one of the

country’s most productivecommercial paua fi shinggrounds. From above paua areoften well camoufl aged withpink coralline shells, but oncethe meat is taken out of theshell the rainbow of iridescentcolours is quite mesmerising.

The colour of paua shellsvaries around New Zealandwith the paua in Fiordlandhaving the most intense rangeof colours. Kaikoura shells aresome of the most colourful(although the shells are a littlemore brittle than paua frommore southern and extremeclimates). The paua is only foundin New Zealand, although similarspecies are found overseas. Yetours are undoubtedly the mostcolourful!

Paua shells - gems on the beach

The Mayfair Theatre is one of the most iconic buildings on the Kaikoura Esplanade.

Built in the art deco style of the 1930’s the theatre’s authentic pink and black paintwork makes it stand out as an iconic building of the era. Few movie theatres in the world can match the Mayfair’s picturesque location by the sea, with dolphins playing on the doorstep and overlooking the Kaikoura mountains.

The Mayfair is a reminder of time gone by when going to the movies was an experience. From the colourful interior, the antique projector, the smell of popcorn and the forgotten novelty of the interval, going to the cinema is like going back in time. The cinema has all the character of grand old building and still has the original carbon arc projector, which looks like a cross between a searchlight and an arc welder.

But the cinema has more modern technology too, like the digital projector, sound system and films which are all of a standard found in much newer complexes.

A fantastic warm cosy place to go on a winter’s night or rainy day, perfect for whiling away a few hours with the children or entertaining teenagers. With Hollywood blockbusters, the recent games nights and performance events

The Magic of the Mayfairthere are even more reasons to come along andbe entertained the old fashioned way.

The Mayfair is owned by the KaikouraCommunity Theatre on behalf of the communityand is proudly independent.

Visit the theatre at 80 Esplanade, Kaikoura orwww.mayfairkaikoura.com.

by Peter LanglandsKaikoura is undoubtedly the best place in New Zealand, and perhaps the world, to see such a wide range of albatross species in such a small space. Within only 15 minutes off the boat ramp at South Bay you can see over fifteen types. To date five species of great albatross have been sighted, comprising of the Wandering and Royal albatross group- the largest of all flying birds. The Snowy Wandering Albatross is sighted especially over the winter months and holds the title of the worlds largest fl ying bird.Over nine types of smaller albatross, also known as Mollymawks have also been sighted off Kaikoura. Several of the species are only seen on rare occasions such as the Chatham Island Albatross or the oceanic Light-mantled Sooty Albatross, which possibly holds the title of the oceans most graceful bird. So in total at least 15 different types of albatross have been identified from off the Kaikoura Coast, more than any other single location in New Zealand.

More distant visitors are species such as the Yellow-nosed Albatross, which nest in the South Indian Ocean. Some of the large snowies seen off Kaikoura are likely to be birds from breeding colonies in the South Atlantic. Likewise many of the Black-browed Albatross seen off Kaikoura are from South Atlantic breeding colonies. Off the Wandering Albatross seen off Kaikoura most are from either the Auckland or Antipodes Islands, several hundred miles to the south of New Zealands mainland. Others species of albatross come from less far a field such as the Southern Bullers Albatross, from the Snares Islands, just south of Stewart Island, and the Northern Royal, and Northern BullersAlbatross, which are from the Chathams. The Salvins Albatross effectively only breeds on the Bounty Islands. The Bountys are the bleakest islands in New Zealands waters and are nothing more than large rocks in the ocean.Recent studies using satellite transmitters have shown that albatross can easily fly a thousand miles a day. Given that these

birds can move so fast it is not surprising that they can travel such vast distances. Indeed it is possible that birds sighted off Kaikoura are on foraging trips with a chick on the nest, back down in the Sub-Antarctic.

Many albatross species are attracted to feeding on offal around fishing boats and Oceanwings also offers the chance to get out off shore and watch albatross at close range. Albatross are particularly fond of fish livers with their high oil content. Indeed on a recent trip on Oceanwings an albatross come in so close that while photographing it at sea level it swam up to, and tapped, mywide angled camera lens.

Fortunately the lens was not scratched and I still have ten fi ngers! The beaks of many albatross species are impressive t say the least. Of all the albatross species the Wandering would have to be the boldest. Royal Albatross are a little more timid by comparison, despite at times being a much larger bird.

Kaikoura’s Albatrosses — wanders from far and wide

By Peter LanglandsOver the winter months visitors often sight penguins close inshore at Kaikoura. Most penguins sighted are either little blue penguins, or the slightly larger and closely related, white fl ippered penguins. The little blue is the worlds smallest species of penguin, weighing just over a kilogram. The penguins forage in shallow water around reefs on Kaikoura Peninsula and are often sighted by those in kayaks, or in small craft. Often the birds can be heard calling, especially around dusk with a loud croaking call.A few pairs of little blue penguins nest on Kaikoura Peninsula, and stay at Kaikoura throughout the year. The white flippered penguin only breeds on Motunau Island, and Banks Peninsula, to the south of Kaikoura, but a few birds venture north over the winter. The white

flippered penguin is recognised as being an endangered speceis with a population of no more than a few thousand. White-flippered penguins are hard to tell apart from the little blues but are slightly larger and have a broad white band on each side of their flipper. In contrast little blues only have a white band on one edge of their fl ipper. Other species of penguins are occasionallysighted at Kaikoura, and over the winter a few yellow-eyed penguins also come ashore. These birds are massive compared to their little blue cousins, and weigh several kilograms more. Most of the yellow-eyed penguins sighted at Kaikoura over the winter are young birds, which have ventured north from Otago Peninsula. This is known as many of the yellow eyed penguins havemetal, numbered bands, which allows researchers to track individual birds.

A white flippered penguin sighted while kayaking off Armers Beach.

Kaikoura has long been the centre of the fi shing industry in fact the Kaikoura region is synonymous with seafood. The meaning of the word speaks volumes Kai meaning (food) and Koura (crayfish). Maori had cast their nets and harvested the sea long before Europeans arrived to take advantage of the abundant fish life and to carry out their whaling operations in the waters of the South Pacifi c.The sea has always played a vital role for Kaikoura inhabitants, both for food and communication purposes.Making a living from fishing has never been an easy task, but love and respect for the sea has been the essence of the Kaikoura lifestyle over a long number of years. There is a wonderful variety of fresh seafood suitable for just about every culinary taste. The nutritional value

associated with seafood makes it very good value for money. The flounder season is the ideal time to sample fl ounders at their very best. Other varieties such as bluenose, groper, and warehou are sometimes preferred for their firm texture and tasty flavour. On the other hand blue cod, ling and tarakihi are an enjoyable alternative and are used in many different ways.Combine this with a cool local wine and what more could one ask for?Crayfish, for which Kaikoura is noteworthy, are available either cooked or live and for many of Kaikouras visitors would be seen as one of the highlights of their visits to the region.

On a crisp autumnal morning as I drove along the Kaikoura Esplanade with its glittering sea backdrop, making my way to Kaikoura Kayaks town base, I felt exhilarated at the prospect of getting out on the water. For me, the appeal was the peacefulness and natural marine life environment, but with tailor-made tours, Kaikoura Kayaks can provide a unique and memorable adventure for all ages and abilities, as well as independent rental options for those with the experience to explore on their own.

This is an excellent winter option for visitors to Kaikoura, while staying warm & dry in your kayak, it is in fact an ideal way to witness the antics of our NZ Fur Seals close-up and have chance encounters with Dusky Dolphins, with the benefi ts of a small and friendly local tour operator, able to custom-tailor eco-friendly options to provide a totally interactive and fl exible outing around the Kaikoura Peninsula, with only the slap of flippers and the squawks of bird life to break the peace. A typical guided tour takes around 2 & ½ to 3 hours and is a 4-5 kilometre paddle around the peninsulas Seal Colonys. On the morning I went, after a straightforward briefing on paddling at Jimmy Armers Beach we donned our spray skirts and life jackets and paddled out to the Seal Colony where we soon came across groups of NZ Fur Seals, and witnessed their early morning antics as they washed themselves and twirled around in the water within a paddles reach of our kayaks. Seemingly completely unthreatened by the non-invasive kayaks, this was a fabulous way to see them close-up. We then paddled around the point and out into the more open water to experience the swell while spotting Dolphins and finally paddled in surfi ng a few small waves to feel the rush and thrill of speeding in with the comfort of a professional guide behind to ensure we stayed upright! Both double and single kayaks are available, and with the doubles being super-stable & fast on the water, virtually anyone can go out and enjoy this activity. Tours run all winter, and Kaikoura Kayaks are selective about picking days and weather, so you are sure to have a safe and comfortable experience. With Humpback Whales cruising around the Kaikoura coastline in May, and even more

seals in August, as well as Blue Penguins, Dusky Dolphins and numerous birdlife, this is an excellent time of year to venture out on the water under snow capped mountains! No experience at all is required for the guided tours, and generally you will keep both yourself and your gear warm and dry with the GORE -TEX dry pants & jacket provided, as well as dry bags for cameras. Tour times are 9 am and 1pm in the winter which can be adjusted to suit your needs

and cost $90.00 for an adult and $70.00 for a child. Families are most welcome, and Kaikoura Kayaks havetaken out children as young as 3 years old.

Friendly and informative staff are happy to help you plan a trip, and to get a better idea of how a tour runs visit www.kaikourakayaks.co.nz click on the Video on the home page or you can free ph them on 0800 452 456 or email [email protected]

An adventure for everyoneKaikouras coastline is a mecca for marine mammals making observation of the fascinating world of whales relatively easy. When the first whaling station was set up in Kaikoura in 1842 the humpback and right whales were keenly sought after but now sperm whales are more predominant around Kaikoura. Nowhere else in the world are sperm whales so accessible. This is mainly due to the fact that the Kaikoura Peninsula provides a meeting place for the strong ocean currents that converge in deep water canyons enabling the rich marine ecosystem to thrive and form the ideal feeding ground for the whales.Sperm whales are large whales that dive very deeply up to three kilometers to feed on squid and fish with a dive taking up to two hours. The males grow to eighteen metres and females can grow up to twelve metres. The average life span is sixty to seventy years while the young adolescent males from the age of about twelve years onward leave their family group to make

their way to Kaikoura where they form bachelor herds. On the other hand the females live within the family group.Other whales such as Orcas, often regarded as the predators of the species are seen from time to time. Over a twelve-month period fourteen species of whales would pass through on their migratory routes. The Humpback whale can be observed during the spring and autumn period.Blue whales huge slender whales that can grow to a maximum of thirty-three metres are not very often seen now because their numbers were dramatically reduced in the early days of whaling, havealso been known to pass through in June or July.Observing whales has become important to Kaikoura replacing the early hunting operations of the past.A popular option to view the whales is by air something the early whalers could never have imaged. There are regular 30 minute fl ights by plane or several boat trips available daily.

By Ljana SligoA single sea star still in the darkness, a fl ash of the bottom dwelling rat-tail fish, the mini-volcanoes of the spoon worm, a crab scuttling by.

An occasional anemone, a delicate heart urchin and a slither of a sea cucumber. These are the images captured in underwater footage by researchers from the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (Niwa) studying the muddy bottom of the Kaikoura Canyon, a deepwater habitat offshore from Kaikoura.

The canyon provides a unique underwater habitat, it starts just 500 metres off the Kaikoura coastline and plunges to depths of more than two kilometres at the edge of the continental shelf just a few hundred metres out to sea.

The footage they gathered gives a tantalising taste of a vibrant community of bottom dwelling animals. It is a peek into an unknown underwater world that has yet to be fully explored.

The unusual yet incredibly abundant species discovered have left scientists like Niwas marine biologist Ashley Rowden wide-eyed with amazement at the sheer abundance of creatures.

One thousand metres below the surface of the water, its dark - pitch black and very cold. On film it looks like a desert. No plants can grow but there is life and in the Kaikoura canyon there is unprecedented amounts of it.

In the footage a storm of mud rises as a small, delicate, pale skate swoops back into the darkness. The research on the ecology of the sea fl oor suggests the Kaikoura Canyon is one of the most productive known deep-sea habitats, being 10 to 100 times more productive than anywhere else on earth. It has revealed an unprecedented biomass of large invertebrates on the canyon seafloor which supports a vast array of life. Most are less than a finger length, but

represent a range of sea creatures, they demonstrate marine life that has adapted to live in a challenging environment.

Bristle worms, heart urchins, spoon worms and sea cucumbers are abundant and are found in densities like nowhere else in the deep sea.

Their biomass is important for supporting nearby ecosystems, suggesting that canyons like Kaikouras may be particularly important for sustaining deep-sea ecosystems around New Zealand and worldwide.

By feeding on the plentiful bottom dwellers, various species of the unusual rat- tail fi sh ensure the nutrients gained from the mud move through the food chain and maybe beyond the canyon itself, meaning that the productivity of the canyon may extend far beyond its geographical location.

At the surface, the dolphins, whales, albatross which the town is so well known for survive by eating the fish that feed at the lower depths.

But why is the Kaikoura canyon so abundant?

Currents, hot and cold converging and mixing in the canyon are part of the answer.

Niwa oceanographer Phil Sutton has found that the physical form of the canyon combines with complex ocean currents to create a unique deep-sea environment. Cold currents moving up the east coast of the South Island and combining with warmer currents from the north result in an abundance of nutrients close to the surface, these are used and when these lifeforms die their bodies can be used by those who live in the depths.

The rest of the story is revealed by marine geologist Joshu Mountjoy who created a 3-D animation of the canyon system.

The Kaikoura canyon is close to the shore, coming to within about half a kilometre of Goose Bay. This means organic material is easily washed into the canyon for bottom-dwelling critters to feed on, proving a constant food source.

Unlike other deep sea habitats, which often lack food, the muddy bottom of this canyon provides a feast for those able to eat it.

This sequence of events results in huge quantities of animals living in deep water.

These animals are themselves of food source for those organisms higher up the chain.

But data has still be collected, analysed and assessed, with much more to be explored and discovered about this fascinating marine laboratory.

A light has been shone on the depths of the Kaikoura canyon

Rich ravine: The research on the ecology of the sea floor suggests the Kaikoura Canyon is one of the most productive known deep-sea habitats, being 10 to 100 times more productive than anywhere else on earth.

WHAT IS THE CANYON:The canyon comes within 500 metres to shore at Goose Bay, the closest in New Zealand. It is 2000 metres deep and covers 800 square kilometres which is about 81,000 hectares. It was formed by underwater landslides which gouge out the sea fl oor. Sediment built up on the edge of the canyon could cause a landslide which is a tsunami hazard. Cold Antarctic current combines with warm salty subtropical current in the canyon. There is a high level of ocean productivity all year round. Eddies form in canyon to stir water together which is important for bringing up nutrients.

Some of the Omihi Track is believed to be part of the old coastal pack track which dates back to the mid 1860s.

A stunning panoramic view awaits those who venture to Kaikouras lookout point. While some people opt to drive up to the lookout point, which is signposted from the corner of State Highway One and Scarborough Street, there are also urban walkways for visitors out for a stroll.Three of these tracks can be accessed from Torquay Street in the East End of Kaikoura.Opposite the New Commercial Hotel, on the corner of Torquay and Brighton Streets is Toms track. Offi cially opened in January 2004, it is named in honour of the late Tom Smith, a local fishing charter operator and diver. From the top it is only a 15-minute walk to the lookout.

Further along Torquay Street, near the intersection with Ramsgate Street, another walkway goes through the site of the former Nga Niho pa or Maori fortifi ed village.

While on this walk, take time to pause at a seat on the pa site that offers a scenic view of the sea and the mountains. The walkway ends on Scarborough Street, with only a 10-minute walk to the lookout.

A third track is Dempseys Track, which can be accessed by walking down Torquay Street until just before the street curves to the left.

The track is signposted, and ends just below the walkway.

Walking to the Kaikoura Lookout

Seat near Nga Nigo pa offers a place to relax and enjoy the views.

The Ohau stream and waterfall is a short 10 minute walk.

The Inland Road is an important link between the tourist town of Kaikoura and Hanmer Springs. The road, or State Highway 70, as it is also known, is a scenic alternative to State Highway 1 and is part of the Alpine Pacific touring route. Allow two hours for the trip to Hanmer. The turnoff to the Inland Road is about six kilometres south of the Kaikoura, on the right just past the Kowhai River bridge. About 60 km along with road is the Mt Lyford Alpine Resort, home to the Mt Lyford Alpine Lodge, a private log chalet village and the nearby Mt Lyford ski fi eld.About another 22km along the Inland Road is the town of Waiau, home to a number of historic buildings.

Two kilometres north of Waiau stands the Highfield woolshed built in 1876 and one of the oldest surviving woolsheds in North Canterbury.

It is still used today and has a New Zealand Historic Places Trust classifi cation.

On Waiaus Cheviot Street there is the historic cobb cottage, constructed of clay, straw and tussock in the 1870s.

The cottage contains a collection of interesting articles from early pioneering days.

Just past the town of Rotherham is the turnoff to State Highway 7A which leads to the alpine thermal village of Hanmer Springs, home to renowned thermally heated pools, which attract more than half a million visitors every year.

The picturesque Inland Road

The alpine spa village of Hanmer Springs has been a holiday destination for New Zealanders for decades. Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa, winner of Best Visitor Attraction at the 2004 & 2005 New Zealand Tourism Awards, is a major draw card, but the alpine environment with its forests, rivers and mountains enhance its appeal as a year round destination. Theres a substantial variety of accommodation including motels, bed and breakfasts, holiday parks, backpackers, lodges, chalets and a four star hotel, complemented by delightful restaurants, cafes, boutique shopping, galleries and craft shops. As a natural spa destination, gentler relaxation takes the form of forest walks, thermal pools, massage and health treatment and golf as well as pure relaxation in the alpine atmosphere. Action attractions include jet boating on the Waiau River, horse trekking, mountain biking and bungy from a historic bridge. The seasons bring amazing colours, particularly in autumn and spring. In winter Hanmer Springs takes advantage

of its proximity to Hanmer Springs Ski Area and Mt Lyford Ski Area.

WalksHanmer Springs is surrounded by forest, both native and exotic featuring a network of over 50km of walking and mountain bike tracks. Walks range from short ½ hour to half day and full. Toget the most out of your stay in Hanmer Springs pick up a Hanmer Forest brochure from the Hurunui-i-Site Centre on Amuri Ave. This brochure provides a map and description of each walk.
