Expansion

• 1803 Louisiana Purchase- Doubles the size of the United States

• Erie Canal- makes New York City a major sea port• Lowell Massachusetts- built for industry• Manifest Destiny- many believed it was the their right

to expand to the Pacific Ocean• Cheap Land & gold- cause huge movements of

settlers to move west• Transcontinental railroad – helps people move goods

and provides transportation

What Effect did Expansion have on Native Americans?

• Lost their lands, hunting grounds

• Lost food source- bison

• Forced removal- Trail of Tears

• Forced onto reservations

• Lost way of life- culture

• Millions killed by disease or wars

Civil War
