Objectives The objective of this experiment is:

i. to calibrate three types of thermocouples which is J, K and T ii. to understand and use of thermocouple in measurement

iii. To determine the characteristics of transducers and transmitters • iv. To determine thecoefficients of transducers and transmitter

Apparatus and Equipment: Multimeter, temperature meter, heating hlement and container. Procedure Background Thermocouples do not provide direct temperature readings. It produces a voltage. The reading will be translate into temperature measurements. Thermocouples are accurate over different ranges of temperatures. Tthermocouples J,k and Tare required for the experimental project; Perecaution Make sure the heating element is inside the tank at the suitable level of water Experiment 1; Type J thermocouple

1) A previously calibrated thermocouple is placed in a bath, to provide reference point for temperature readings. This thermocouple is then placed in a water or dry ice bath in container and the other junction in other container.

2) Measure the voltages. 3) Record all your results in an appropriate table voltage versus different temperature in container

by heating up the water in container. 4) Repeat the experiment steps 1 to 3 5) Your task is to use the collected data to plot a graph. You are then to prepare a short

experimental report describing the project, the procedure, measurement technique, calibration and the results.

Experiment 2: Type K thermocouple Repeat the experiment 1 from steps 1 to 5 for type K thermocouple

Experiment 3: Type T thermocouple Repeat the experiment 1 from steps 1 to 5 for type T thermocouple

Experiment 4: Combination of J and K to increase the amount of voltage 1) Prepare a series circuit to combine J and K type thermocouple and 2) Repeat steps 1 to 5 from the experiment 1 for this combination.

Discussion and general conclusion.

1) Compare the graph to the standard table and discuss 2) Using the obtained data procedures determine the characteristic and sensitivity of the

thermocouple temperature. 3) Discuss error in measurement. 4) Discuss the instrument term and calibration term and parameters from these xperiment

and the behavior of the graph. 5) Using an approriate software calculate correlation value of your graph characteristic.

Thermocoupletables.
