April in Colorado isnot quite like April inParis. Well, maybethat is not a badthing—you don’thave to learn French, and traffic circles are

few and far between. In Paris, the Alpsare close by, but we have the Rockieseven closer. Time to put away the skis, get the Porsche out of mothballs andget ready for some summer cruising bycar instead of skis!

I have my track car in the shop get-ting its annual physical. (Maybe thedriver should go to the shop and getchecked out too.) My street car is next.Any of the shops that advertise in thenewsletter are good places to takeyour car to get it serviced.

This year, as usual, we have some-thing Porsche for everyone. We startthe season off with some high-speeddriving instruction at High Plains Race-way. For something a little tamer, bothRMR and AMR have severalautocrosses scheduled. Also check outthe RMR Web site for tours, rallies, concours, socials and lots of other funevents. The schedule can be dynamic,so visit the Web page often for latestupdates. I also send out e-mail noticesof last-minute changes. If you have notbeen getting the e-mails and want tosee what you have been missing, go tothe PCA Web site (www.pca.org), log into your account and check your e-mailaddress. There are about 800 RockyMountain Region members who havenot input an e-mail address (familymembers can input a separate e-mailaddress too, if desired). This is espe-cially important so we can contact you

about event changes becauseof weather or other reasons.

There have been some changes tothe Junior Participation Program thisyear. The program is for 16- and 17-year-olds who are fully-licenseddrivers. In the past, the program waslimited to sons and daughters of PCAmembers. This year, the program hasbeen expanded to include nieces, nephews, grandchildren and step-chil-dren. The PCA member sponsoring thejunior must be present at the event.Special release forms signed by bothparents or guardians are required.Make sure you have the forms filledout and signed before you come to theevent! The program is limited toautocrosses, autocross schools, rallies, and concours. This is an excellentopportunity for new drivers to learnhandling skills.

We had record attendance at theMarch social! It was great to see oldfriends and meet so many new mem-bers. The April social will be at PrestigeImports on Thursday, April 1 (see page2). This should be a fun and informa-tive session. Come by at 6:30 forrefreshments and check out the newPorsches, then a special program at7:30. We haven’t made plans for whatto do for socials the rest of the year, soif you have any ideas, talk to a boardmember. New ideas are welcome.

Time to head down to the garageand clean up my car so it looks goodfor cruising this summer. I thoughtabout a hydraulic lift kit and big sub-woofers, but I plan on heading to themountains instead of Federal Blvd. Iprefer peace and quiet.

See you at the next event!

Special Guest Paul Gagliardi, Porsche Cars North AmericaPaul joined Porsche Cars North

America in 2000. He wears two hatsas a field technical manager andregional after-sales manager. InPaul’s position at PCNA, he has hadthe good fortune to be able to assistthe Weissach engineers with testingnew models and systems, and to par-ticipate in “test tours” of futureproducts. He also works closely withPorsche’s Public Relations and Pressdepartments as a technical consult-ant.

Most recently, he has participatedin the international press launch ofthe new Boxster Spyder and, prior tothat, the introduction of the Panam-era to the press at Road America.Last summer he worked on a specialtest tour with the engineers responsi-

ble for the emissions systems for thenew PDK-equipped 997 Turbo. He wasin Germany this March for training onthe new Cayenne.

Paul has owned Porsches since1980, and still has his first one—a1974 911—as well as a 1965 356SC(owned for 26 years) and a 1988 911turbo-look coupe. He has been a PCAmember since 1986, has served onthe Parade Competition Rules Com-mittee from 1993 to 2006, and hasjudged Parade and independentnational concours events since 1989.

Paul will be presenting the techni-cal highlights and innovations of thePanamera, GT3 RS and Boxster Spy-der, and also hopes to share somelimited information about the newCayenne.

Escape Velocity. The Nor’Easter.Windblown Witness. These are the titlesof various regionalnewsletters aroundPCA, and each ofthem says

something about its region. Others, such as Spiel and Der Auspuff, give anod to (most of) our cars’ German ori-gin. I would say that these titles have acertain je ne sais quoi about them, butFrench phrases have no place in a pub-lication about a German marque!

By way of comparison, the RockyMountain Region publishes a newslet-ter called RMR Porsche News. Nooffense to whoever came up with thename—although I’d bet that person isstill out there—but this is probably oneof the most prosaic titles in all of PCA.

What’s in a name? In the grandscheme of things, it probably doesn’tmatter a great deal what we call ournewsletter. Content is king, and theRMR newsletter—under the namesRMR/Porsche, The Newsletter andPorsche Patter—has earned the Paul R.Heinmiller Award almost as manytimes (six) as anyone else (San DiegoRegion, eight), boring title and all.

So if the title doesn’t matter, why allthe fuss? After all, RMR/Porsche(recently adding News) has stood since1982, over half as long as RMR itself.

For one, I think we can do better. Amore engaging name would betterreflect the club’s unique dynamic. Andit just might encourage a non-memberto pick up a copy while waiting for

service on his or her Porsche, and seewhat this organization is all about. (Somaybe the name does matter.)

And, perhaps more importantly, Ibelieve the current name may be livingon borrowed time. In recent years,Porsche has become rather protectiveof its trademarks, having negotiatedan agreement with PCA over permitteduse of the Porsche name and associ-ated trademarks. (At issue was PCA’sright to even call itself the PorscheClub of America!) The long and short ofit is that using someone else’s trade-marks in the title of a publication isskating on thin ice.

So I am asking you, our readers, tosuggest a new name for your newslet-ter via a contest. I’ll convene a panelto choose a winner, the submitter ofwhich will receive not only braggingrights, but something of tangible valueas well: a $50 credit good toward anyRMR event. The rules are simple:• Only RMR members are eligible.• Entries must not infringe Porsche’s

trademarks (or anyone else’s).• Entries must not be substantially

similar to the name of any other PCAnewsletter.

• Submit as many entries as you like.• Submit your entries by April 30 to

[email protected].• The panel’s decision will be final. In

the case of a “tie” (multiple contest-ants submitting the same winningname), the earliest submission wins.

You may not get another chance likethis for another 28 years, so don’t missout—enter now! I look forward to see-ing your creative suggestions.

912s were staged, but all seemed some-what the same, making it close to a“spec” class.

The flagman waived the green, and Iwas off on my first Porsche Paradeautocross. This was “big time” for meand I wanted to make a good showing. Idid OK at following the course, made acouple of mistakes in the “turn around”area where I thought I should shift to firstgear and ultimately finished 7th in class.I was kind of disappointed with my per-formance, but only 2.34 seconds fromthe first place time of 1:51.69. At theautocross banquet, I was awarded a tro-phy for my efforts and received applausefrom those in attendance. Wow, I wasone notch down from the Indy 500!

Upon arriving home, I had allof my pictures developed andthought that I sure would like tohave one of my 912 in actionduring the autocross. A greatidea would to be to put arequest in the Mart section ofPano, so I sent in an advertise-ment to the Wanted section. After all, lots of people werethere and maybe someonewould have a picture that theywould share. I never got aresponse from my ad, but thePano editor took note of myrequest and published a pictureof my 912 and me in action atthe Sun Valley autocross.

There, in the September,1971 issue of the PorschePanorama, for all the world tosee forever, is a picture of me

autocrossing with the windshield wiperson full blast. It was not raining. Be carefulof what you wish for.

In the minds and memories of all whoattended the Sun Valley Parade, it hasalways been known as one of the bestever, especially for its time. I was fortu-nate to have been there. I have that 7thplace trophy around here somewhere, but the memories of the folks who werethere remain today. People such as DanRowzie, Walt Woodhead and Bob Harperand their friends and family of thePotomac Region made my first PorscheParade a neat experience. My attendanceat 28 Porsche Parades since has addedmany more lifetime Porsche friends asthe years have gone by. Check out thenext Parade, wherever it may be held, forlifetime memories of your own.

Oh, one more thing. I have been prac-ticing at this autocross thing, and wantyou six guys who beat me in Sun Valleyto know that I want a re-match!

spectacular scene had on me. I used allof the film for my camera that I hadbrought with me and wished I had more. Iwent from Porsche to Porsche, takingnotes and pictures and talking to mostanyone who would listen. What a won-derful day! The owners of the Porschesdisplayed all seemed to have a specialstory about their cars and were anxiousto tell that story. Back at the Lodge latethat afternoon, I thought that this sort ofgathering was not just about the cars, but the very special people who drivethem. Maybe there is a slogan brewingthere.

I was really nervous about theautocross. If there is any event where Ican display my skills, the autocross is it.

On Wednesday morning, I showed upearly to make sure that I was prepared.First, the 912. Just take all movable itemsfrom the interior and trunk, take off thehubcaps (yes, hubcaps) and adjust thetire pressures. For a “stock” classPorsche, that is about it, and not muchhas changed over the years. As for driverprep, walk the course and make sure youknow exactly where you want to go. Onemain thing about the autocross game isnot to hesitate while you wonder wherethe course goes.

The Sun Valley autocross was held onpublic streets, some of which were roadsin front of houses and condos not yetbuilt. This made for kind of a “roadcross”, fun to drive and safe for the driv-ers. The 912 class was well represented, with 23 cars entered, as four-cylinderPorsches were pretty common. As the912 group lined up for the start, I thoughtI should have a pretty good chance to dowell. Lots of different colors and years of

As a young rookie Porsche owner, I dis-covered the benefits of PCA membershipafter joining in 1969. What really got myattention was this wonderful Panoramamagazine that appeared in my mailboxeach month. In the days when there wereno electronic means of communication(as we practice today), and Porsche own-ership was somewhat rare, this magicalPorsche-only publication was a real treatto receive.

Panorama’s pages included lovinglywritten articles about Porsche cars andthe people who drove them. It featuredadvertising of Porsche stuff to buy, upcoming events to attend, Porsche fac-tory news and stories of Porsche racingfrom all over the world. One event thatcaught my eye was the annualPCA convention, referred to asthe “Porsche Parade.” In 1971,Sun Valley, Idaho would be thelocation. I just had to attend.

I must admit being somewhatintimidated at attending such anextravaganza. Some of thosefamous people mentioned in the“Pano” would be there. No onefrom my region was going toattend. How would I do, compet-ing against all of thoseexperienced and accomplishedPorsche drivers? Maybe I shouldsit this one out. Or just attendand take pictures. I decided toenter the autocross and the hillclimb competition. At least I hadsome local autocross experience.

After a wonderful trip in my1969 912, I drove into the park-ing lot of the Sun Valley Lodge. It was abeautiful place, but my first fear hadcome true. There I was in the midst ofhundreds of Porsches, and I knew no one. However, no sooner than I had switchedoff the ignition, I was approached by anofficial-looking guy in a Castrol Oil hat.Uh oh, I must be parked in the wrongplace. But he had spotted my Virginialicense plates and came over tointroduce himself. Turns out he was DanRowzie of the Potomac region. Dan and Ihad met at a couple of PCA events backeast, and he was one of those famouspeople with his name in the Pano, as heserved as the National Public Relationsguy for PCA. Dan introduced me to themembers of his group and invited me topark with them in the concours prepparking lot. So much for not knowinganyone 2000 miles from home!

Tuesday was concours day, with over100 Porsche cars displayed for judging. Itis hard to explain the impression that

It all started innocently enough: Veteran RMR and SCCAmember, R Gruppe Hall of Fame inductee and Pelican legend,Grady Clay, and Roger Buswell (your author) were sharingbreakfast one autumn day in 2007; brainstorming ideas thatincluded Porsches. Grady dreamed of getting all the factionswho love Porsches together—members of RMR, AMR, PelicanParts and Rennlist forum regulars, the Early S Club, 928 fanat-ics, SCCA, NASA, RMVR, the 356 Registry—anyone we couldthink of who may like to meet for breakfast once a month andbring their Porsches... an impromptu car show and grassrootsbreakfast jamboree. Grady wondered if it could be done. Iwondered how to get the word out to the teeming multitudes. We laid out a plan, a place, a time and some basic groundrules. For a few weeks I spent more hours than I care to admit, sending out electronic invitations, posting on all the forums, answering questions and compiling the “list.” It became alabor of love and it looked like it could get pretty big.

Then March 3rd, 2008 arrived and we waited anxiously atthe Village Inn on S. Colorado Blvd. and Mexico. A couplesleepy-eyed folks stumbled in, then a few more and, beforewe knew it, over two dozen car fiends were devouringflapjacks and talking Porsche on a cold, dark, icy morning. Thenext meeting had over sixty people filling half of the restau-rant and over forty Porsches in the parking lot. What a rush! What a kick! “What a Frankenstein we created?!”

A key objective both Grady and I had from the beginningwas to find the right person to run the show. Our prayers wereanswered when RMR member, avid Porsche 928 owner andpopular Rennlister, Erik Behrendsen, stepped for-ward. Erik took over and has turned what is nowknown as the Porsche Breakfast Club (PBC forshort) into a fountain of world-class fun and fellow-ship for scores of Colorado Porsche enthusiasts. He has artfully melded together many ofColorado’s Porsche Nation through his über-creative mind, massive Rolodex and unbridledenergy. He effortlessly organizes day runs, museum tours, luncheons at cool theme restau-rants, cocktail parties at exotic car galleries,half-day clinics hosted by car detailing emporiums;plus he designs club attire on the side. Try to “freeassociate” fun car ideas with Erik, and your headwill start spinning; you can’t keep up! The PBC iseven going to host Beer:30 at the June RMR DE.

So why should you care? Because you’re invited, that’s why! You only need to set up a free Yahoo!user account (or use your existing one) to join atthe PBC social Web site: autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/porschebreakfastclub. First Ancestor of All PorscheSports Cars on Show inAmerica for the First Time

Stuttgart - The Museum run by Dr. Ing.h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, Germany, issending its legendary Type 64 Berlin-Rome Car on a long journey. Befitting the60th anniversary of Porsche in America, the aluminum body of Type 64 will bepresented from 21 March to 20 June 2010at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta,Georgia (USA), taking the first and most

prominent exhibit at the PorscheMuseum in Zuffenhausen to a new loca-tion outside of Germany for the first time.

The High Museum of Art is one of theworld’s leading art museums. In its spe-cial exhibition “The Allure of theAutomobile”, the High Museum of Art isexpressing its recognition of outstandingautomotive developments in the period1930 to 1960, focusing on differences in

the development of American and Euro-pean design. Type 64 will be presentednext to other icons in the world of theautomobile from Bugatti, Dusenberg,Jaguar, Ferrari, Pierce Arrow, Packard,Cadillac and Tucker as a synthesis ofinnovative construction and design, supreme craftsmanship, and exceptionaldesign.

Type 64 is of very special significanceto the history of the Porsche brand: Builtin 1938/39 under the guidance of Ferdi-nand Porsche, this unique car already

had all the features that make sportscars from Zuffenhausen so very specialthe world over to this day: lightweightconstruction and superior aerodynamics, exceptional performance, reliable tech-nology, and that unique design socharacteristic of a Porsche. Originallydeveloped for the Berlin-Rome long-dis-tance race, Type 64, due to the war, never entered a race in its lifetime. But it

marks an essential milestone en route tothe first Porsche, Type 356 built in 1948.

The car’s streamlined aluminum bodyalready showed distinctive indicationslater to be admired in all of Porsche’ssports cars, its DNA living on in thePorsche 356 through the Porsche 911 allthe way to the Panamera. The symbiosisof motorsport requirements and the useof production elements made the car aperfect grand tourer able to reach anaverage speed on public roads back in1939 of more than 130 km/h or 80 mph.

No surprise, therefore, that Fer-dinand Porsche himself usedType 64 for long journeys.

Accompanying the new con-struction of the PorscheMuseum in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, the aluminumbody of Type 64 was re-built byexperts in years of painstakingcraftsmanship. Ever since theMuseum was opened in January2009, Type 64 has marked thebeginning of the Museum Tour, thrilling visitors from all overthe world through its culturalimpact and unique flair alone.

While Type 64 is being pre-sented to the public in Atlanta,

the Porsche Museum will be displayingthe skeleton structure of the Type 64body until the end of June 2010—a skele-ton made of wood upon which the1.2-millimeter aluminum panels werehammered into shape.

The Porsche Museum is open Tuesdaysto Sundays from 9:00 to 18:00. Furtherinformation is available on the Internet atwww.porsche.com/museum.

Please don’t judge me until you hearmy story. I was bewitched. I have been alover of Porsches all my life. They turnmy head the way beautiful women turnthe heads of other men. The roundnessof their hips, their subtle curves, thatsensual throatiness of their exhaustdominated my dreams for years. Anunnatural desire to possess an exampleof this classic art form but without thefunds to actually own one drove me tothe unthinkable—I bought a replica!

Wait! Don’t turn this page in disgust. Ican feel your outrage, but hear me out. Isaid I loved Porsches. My first joined my fam-ily years ago—a paleyellow ‘76 912E. Yes, apoor man’s Porsche, but I was a high schoolEnglish teacher withtwo kids in college.Sure, she only had fourcylinders, sheepskinscovered her split seats, and her heater boxeswere cracked. But Idrove her passionatelyevery day. Clad in fourstudded snow tires, she carried me throughtwo of the worst win-ters in modern history. But her littleheart couldn’t match my lust for driving. At 175,216 miles it gave out. Sheneeded replacement surgery. Did I stayby her side? Did I do the right thing andnurse her back to health? No! I was afickle lover. I wanted something newer, faster, more luxurious. And somethingwith a decent heater.

I replaced her with a Guards Red ‘89Carrera 4. Black leather upholstery, G50transmission, air conditioning, sunroof,3.6 liters, and 0-60 in a heartbeat. Thistime, I would treat her with the respectshe deserved. While she languishedunder her custom cover in the back ofmy snug barn, I drove to school watch-ing snowflakes sift into the cab of my oldJeep CJ daily driver. Only when the sunshone brightly and the roads dried didshe leave her sanctuary. Hours I spentlaving her body with expensive creamsand waxes. Dirt and grime never sulliedher perfect frame. But Porsches, as youknow, can be cruel mistresses. One day

her power suddenly waned drastically. Iknew what it was; I had read about thisflaw in 964’s. A tiny synchro beltconnecting her two distributors had bro-ken, endangering her beautiful powerplant. I rushed her to the hospital, but itwas too late. She needed a completedistributor replacement. We had nohealth insurance. The bill was astronom-ical—equal to the GNP of some smallcountries. This time, though, I stayedtrue to her. I taught summer school, didsome tutoring. It would be all right. Wewould make it through this. But I knew

this wouldn’t be the last dramaticepisode. I could see in that enigmaticsmile of her bumper that she yearnedfor more. She was hooked on cosmeticsurgery. What would it be next? An all-wheel-drive overhaul? New CV joints? Asimple oil change was costing me over$150. I loved her, but I couldn’t affordher. I had to break up with her.

Which brings me to my unforgivablesin. How could I have what my heartdesired and afford to maintain it? Isearched eBay and Craigslist, hoping tofind a gem that some idiot was trying togive away. Then one day, listed under356’s, there she was. A perfect repro-duction of a 1957 Porsche Speedster, exactly like the real one my collegeroommate had years ago. Sure, she saton a reinforced 1968 Volkswagen frameand sported a VW engine, but her lineswere pure Speedster, down to that slit ofa windshield and bathtub body. I willnever forget that Saturday night on EastColfax in 1964 when my roommate said,

“Hold on!” before he made a 90-degreeright turn in that Speedster at 45 MPH.We didn’t roll. We didn’t spin out. Thatlittle car just turned the corner. It wasamazing! And now I have one, at one-sixth the price of the real thing. Oh sure, the seats are more comfortable than anoriginal and the body is fiberglass, butfew can tell she isn’t genuine. She does-n’t surge forward from stop lights likethe 964. Her top and side curtains arefar from rain- or wind-proof. At 50degrees with the top down, it’s quitecomfortable—as long as I’m wearing my

cycling tights, a parka, awool cap, and ski gloves.Sure, my wife won’t ridein it because that rakishwindshield is so low thatthe wind molests her hair.Yes, the heater producesno discernable heat. For-get about air conditioning. But she is such a stunner!People turn to stare at us.Little kids point at us outof car windows. Men smileenviously and give me thethumbs up. 356 ownerswave and flash their lightsat us.

I know, though. I drive aforgery. A false mistress has enchantedme. How could a loyal PCA member fallfor the perversion of a “kit car”? But Ihaven’t turned my back on the marque.I would still love to be able to afford a911, Boxster, or Cayman. Perhaps some-day I will. Do I regret this betrayal?Occasionally. But when I do, I rememberdriving back over Loveland Pass fromthe Keystone Parade on that lovely sum-mer afternoon, and the last switchbackbefore the top, and that tourist with hiscamera beside the road, snapping pic-ture after picture of me as I shot by inmy replica.

rmrporschenews April 201017

I’ve been kind ofbusy with PCA stuffthis winter. Right afterthe Zone 9 meeting inFebruary, I flew out toSan Jose, California forthe PCA National win-

ter meeting. Although it just sounds likeit’s fun to travel around and see Porschepeople, there is actually a lot of businessthat’s done at these meetings eachyear. From the perspective of a regularmember, it often appears that all of PCAcan be encapsulated by what goes on inone’s Region. But when you consider allthe kinds of activities, programs, bene-fits, and publications that PCAgenerates, things begin to grow almostexponentially as you go from theRegional to the Zone to the Nationalstaff and the kinds of policies, decisions, and responsibility involved.

From a personal perspective, it’salways great to see my fellow Zone Repsin person. It’s kind of a strange feeling, because we talk on the phone monthlyin a conference call, and we often e-mailone another on various PCA matters, sowe are well familiar with one another. But we really only see each other as agroup twice a year: once at the wintermeeting and once at the Parade meet-ing. So the meeting is both familiar andstrange at the same time.

It’s also good to be able to converse inperson with the various PCA committeechairs—those whose names you see onthe last pages of Panorama. Believe it ornot, all those people are busy updating

various policy changes and event proto-cols, etc., etc., etc. Each one makes areport during the National board meet-ing. This year the RPM (RegionProcedures Manual) had somesignificant changes, and the PCR(Parade Competition Rules) did too.Parade is undergoing a major changethis year as it moves from a Nationalevent hosted by a Region to a Nationalevent organized and run by the PCAParade Committee, but with assistancefrom the Regions. San Diego Regionmember Tom Brown has taken on thismonumental task and is looking forwardto a successful Parade in St. Charles, Illi-nois this year.

Some of my favorite people to talk toat the National meetings are Leonardand Betty Jo Turner, editors of Panoramamagazine, the finest car club magazinein the world. They’re some of the hard-est working people in the Club, havingworked in that position for 40 years orso without having missed even oneissue during that time.

Web site and Newsletter Chair Jill Beckin always on my list too, as I’m curiousabout the state of communicationswithin PCA at all the various levels.Newsletters are in major flux right now,as printing costs escalate and volunteereditors are becoming harder and harderto find. When I discussed this issue withJill, she noted that more and more, many of the Regions will be shiftingaway from printed newsletters to an e-newsletter format, very similar to theE-Brake newsletter you receive from

National every other week now.If fact, for those of you with iPhones,

PCA now has an app which will directyou to any Porsche-related informationin any of the Regions, nationwide, asyou travel. That means Regional Websites, authorized Porsche dealers, inde-pendent Porsche repair shops,race-tracks, and any number of otherPorsche related goods and services. Yes,things are changing that fast.

To use a point of historicalcomparison, I can remember taking asummer course on “The Soviet UnionToday” during the summer of 1989, andthe question came up, “How long beforethe Soviet Union breaks up?” It wasunimaginable as anything other than adiscussion topic that summer. But it wasonly a couple of years later that theUSSR was a thing of the past. That’s thepoint we’re at with communicationstechnology. Even the larger, richerRegions are looking at doing away withtheir printed newsletters and moving tothe e-model and iPhone apps. Staytuned, literally, on this issue.

By the time you read this, I will havestarted making my rounds in the Zonewith a visit to Alpine Mountain Regionfor their anniversary party and to LlanoEstacado for one of their monthly break-fast meetings. The Roadrunner Region isback in business with their traditionalMemorial Day celebration: Fiesta delPorsche and... Parade is not far behind.

I look forward to seeing you at anevent soon.

driver’s ed. education John Hajny, Chief Instructor, Central NY Region

“Driver’s Ed. Education: A Series ofSpecifics for Success” is an orderedseries of articles prepared for the Red-line Report (Central NY Regionnewsletter) by John Hajny. The series isreprinted here with permission.

Article 7:

“Big Mo”“Big Mo” is your Friend!

Last time we talked about getting thatgood, clean, tight late apex that willincrease your acceleration zone. Let’sassume you’ve learned the line anddrive it pretty consistently at a goodpace. You’ve learned to finish all of yourbusiness before that “Business Cone,”have a good grasp of where that turn-inpoint is (or at least how to find it!), andhave now converted it to the “Accelera-tion Cone.” This next theme is going tobecome increasingly important as yourspeed continues to build: “Trust is aMust.”

Eventually, most of my students reach apoint where real consistency and speedare just a breath away. They know theline and are beginning to notice whateffect their inputs have on the car as itcorners. They now notice what jumpingon the throttle to begin cornering accel-eration is doing to their line (it throwsthe front end away from the apex!), andthey feel those minute twitches in thetail end that they didn’t before. Whenthe student starts to correctly critiquetheir own driving, I know we are reallyclose. But once again, just when youthought you had it down, I’m going tothrow another curveball at you.

When you’ve reached a certain point inyour driving, that deep, late turn-inwe’ve been pounding into your brainmay not be the best line to take into acorner. It was designed to keep you onthe track surface and out of the weedsuntil you learned the basics, but it is notthe be-all and end-all of cornering the-ory. Ultimately, you need to learn todrive the way that works best for youand your car.

If you are beginning to carry more speedinto that late turn-in area, you may likelyfind that this is making it difficult toreach a tight apex. The car is driftingwide and you find yourself really crank-

ing the steering wheel trying to get overthere, and the result is a lot of front-endpush and that old, “I’m running out oftrack-out” feeling. It’s likely time tomodify that late turn-in a bit, and todevelop Trust.

At this point, I instruct my students tostart turning in a little earlier so thatthey can reach that tight apex that is soimportant. It now becomes a balancebetween the point where they turn, andthe amount of Momentum they are will-ing to carry. At first, the earlier turn-inwill cause a perceived early apex situa-tion, which obviously is very unnerving, and will entice you to steer away fromyour apex. But, you do not want to dothat, do you? Now is the ultimatemoment... when “Trust is a Must”, and“Momentum is our Friend!”

Now that we’ve begun to turn in a littleearlier to tighten our apexes, we needonce again to fight that improperreflex—to turn away from that apex! This is a potentially dangerous time inyour “driving career,” because you havelearned enough to begin driving withsome decent pace, you’ve learned thatthe car is much more capable than you,but you have not necessarily developedconfidence in the amount of momentumyou can safely carry through the turns. With that extra speed you’ve developed, this is the time to really concentratehard and use those car-feel senses tothe max.

Assuming smooth technique (asalways!), virtually every car will initiallyundersteer mildly in a turn. We havelearned to mitigate that “push” by turn-ing decisively, and to quell any chanceof sudden oversteer by acceleratingsmoothly. This sets the car on itssuspension evenly. When one reachesperhaps 85% of the car’s capability, ifone has been tactful, the car will gradu-

ally ease into a four-wheel drift and ulti-mately begin to oversteer slightly. Howmuch oversteer is a matter of how wellyou’ve combined the ingredients.Believe it or not, this is the point we aretrying to reach... Trust Me!

By driving the car past initial push, through drift, and on to mild oversteer,we have now begun to rotate the backof the car around that apex and to effec-tively point the car up the nextstraightaway earlier than if the car weredrifting or understeering. This is theprinciple that has made the 911 soeffective in racing, and that makes the914 such a dynamite autocrosser, but itcan be done with any car that is prop-erly set up and driven. You may haveheard it said that, “A Loose Car is a FastCar,” and this is true, but now is not thetime to realize that you should havealready developed that sensitive throttlefoot! Incidentally, if you are having diffi-culty tuning your car to this slightlyloose state, it’s time for an adjustablerear sway bar to tighten the rear of thecar to the right degree for comfortableand manageable oversteer.

So, if you have a good fix on how muchspeed to enter a turn with, know whereand how much to steer, how much throt-tle to add, and how to maintain thatcornering balance you’ve set, hang onand enjoy the ride! If you’ve set allthese things up properly, simple minutethrottle and steering inputs will arc youby that apex like you were driving onrails. Guess what...

… you are!

Ever Get DirtyLooks?

I have a friend whohas a Mercedes-BenzSL500. He loaned it tohis daughter oneevening to go meet her

friends. As he tells the story, when shepulled up, all her friends overtly lookedaway, averting their eyes from this “richb____”… until they realized that, oh, itwas their friend who was behind thewheel. And everything was OK again.

Has anything like this ever happenedto you? In a Porsche? In anything?

Not to me. Ever. And that’s in 32 yearsof on-again, off-again, mostly-on Porscheownership. My wife says I’m oblivious. That may be. Because the forums arefilled with horror stories of insult andinsinuation, hurled at our brethren, all forseemingly nothing more than drivingWeissach’s finest.

In fact, for me it’s been quite the oppo-

site. Oh sure, barely a day goes by whensome Millennial in a rice-can yells over todo a stoplight Grand Prix. But that’s socommon it doesn’t even register a pointgain on my blood pressure meter. AndI’ve found that I can solve the problem bysimply looking distracted, by not lookingacross at who’s resonating the tin-canexhaust, and by not making eye contact.

If that’s “being oblivious,” I’ll take it.No, most of the events I recall have

been positive… or at least humorous.Like the time I came into our cul-de-sac

to find two teenage boys waving andpointing at me… and then following meon foot to my garage. Turns out theywere friends of my then-teenage daugh-ter, and they just wanted to get a goodlook at my ride. Which I gave them.Along with these parting words; “Workhard—long and hard—and you, too, candrive one of these, one of these days.”

I was quite proud of myself. My best story happened years ago…

1978, to be exact. My wife and I were inour brand-new-to-us 914—a ‘76 2.0,white, perfect condition, with the Porschestripe spelled out on the sides. I nevershould have sold it, and only did becauseshe got pregnant with our first daughtera few years later. We were in rural centralPennsylvania, not far off I-80 (a fairly newstretch of Interstate at that time). Wewere getting gas.

For some reason, I opened both thefront and rear trunks—to get somethingout, or shift our load, I don’t rememberwhy. Just then, the gas station attendantsauntered over. He took a good, hardlook at us, looked at the two open trunks, looked at us again, and asked, “Hey,where’s the engine?”

I should have told him it was flummox-powered—ran on a mixture of angel hairand suntan lotion, embedded in thewheels. But I didn’t. I didn’t want to giveus Porsche-pushers a bad name.

Then again, there’s the story of myone-time friend from New York. He reallywas a true enthusiast, but he had a fewscrews loose. His family had done verywell. They had a Rolls-Royce. He said heborrowed it one day and happened tocross one of the bridges over Long IslandSound. At the toll booth, he rolled downthe window and asked the attendant if hehad change for a hundred.

He drove a Vette, and his vanity licenseplates read “WLDKRZGI.” Get it?

We lost track of each other, years ago,and I haven’t looked him up on Facebook.

My parents live in a semi-retirement

community in Virginia. Although Iwouldn’t classify my father as an enthusi-ast, he’s had a string of nice cars, mostlyMercedes and BMW. He currently drives a5-Series.

The last time we visited, he was lettingoff steam that others in the communitywere “noting” that the Badlers were high-flyers, since they could afford a BMW. Istared at my father and said, you shouldmove. How can you take that? How canyou live in a place where people saythat? You can, and should, drive anythingyou want. Especially if it makes youhappy. Especially at this stage in yourlife.

My father nodded. So I told him about the episode of Sein-

feld, when Jerry visits his parents inSouth Florida. Suddenly, it’s 4 PM, andsomeone says it’s time for the early birddinner… where should we go? Jerry rollshis eyes and says something to the effectof, “Can’t we wait for, at least, 6 PM?”And the character, played by that greatcharacter actor Sandy Baron, says, “Bigshot! Eats at 6 PM! Excuse me!”

I told my parents not to move to SouthFlorida. Or back to New York. And don’tmake eye contact at stoplights.

TourA tour is a non-competitive driving event inwhich participants follow a given route to a des-tination (which may or may not be known inadvance). A tour may vary in length from a daytrip to a long weekend with an overnight stay ortwo. Tours usually follow scenic routes (which areplentiful in Colorado) and/or visit interesting orobscure destinations. Tours are sometimes com-bined with rallies to add variety and a dose ofcompetition to the event.

RMR hosts at least one tour each year; AMR typi-cally offers several. A number of tours areusually offered at Porsche Parade as well.

RallyA rally is a competitive event in which contest-ants attempt to follow a course specified by aset of instructions. Rallies are typically run onpublic, paved roads, and speed limits are alwaysobserved. The two major types of rallies are theTime-Speed-Distance (TSD) rally and the Gim-mick rally. In a TSD rally, participants attempt tofollow the instructions precisely, maintaining thecorrect speed, as points are deducted for arriv-ing at checkpoints (the locations of which are notknown in advance) early or late. A Gimmick rallyis typically a bit less rigid and usually involvessolving puzzles of some type.

Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—atleast one of each type—are offered. PorscheParade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes aGimmick rally, each year.

Autocross (AX)An autocross is a competition in which driversnavigate their cars through a course defined byorange cones, usually in a large parking lot. Topspeeds are generally moderate, topping outaround 40-65 MPH (no higher than second gearfor many cars). Competing cars are spaced atlong intervals—typically only one or two cars areon the course at any time. Autocross is a safeway to experience high-performance drivingwhile learning to drive your car at its limit.

Together, RMR and AMR host several autocrossevents each year, including Eiskhana (essentially

an autocross on the ice!) in the winter and an AXschool in the spring. Additionally, autocross is amajor event at Porsche Parade.

Driver Education (DE)A driver education event provides a safe, con-trolled environment for high-performance drivinginstruction. DE offers drivers of all skill levels theopportunity to hone their driving skills, with thehelp of an experienced instructor, in a controlled,closed-course environment. In keeping with PCAphilosophy, the primary emphasis at all times ison safety. A word of warning, though: the DEexperience may be habit-forming!

As DE events are not racing, nor preparation forracing, lap times are not recorded. However, some DE events are followed immediately by atime trial event, which gives drivers a chance toquantify their performance. Lap times may thenbe used to measure personal improvement, forbragging rights, etc.

RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High PlainsRaceway, with AMR hosting several more at theLa Junta, Pueblo, and (possibly in the future)Pikes Peak International Raceway tracks.

Club RaceA club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing event. Arace weekend consists of a number of practicesessions and “heats” (race sessions), ofteninvolving both “sprint” and “endurance” races. As a Club Racing license (issued by PCANational) is required for competition, club racersare serious and experienced drivers. The carsthey bring with them to the track can be quiteimpressive! As a point of interest, the PCA ClubRacing program was inaugurated with the RMR-hosted “First Ever Anywhere” club race atSecond Creek in 1992.

Because of the logistics involved in an event ofthis magnitude, a club race requires a legion ofvolunteers. However, a club race is also one ofmost exciting events to participate in, so be sureto sign up!

RMR hosts one club race each year at HighPlains Raceway which, combined with the “SuperDE” event, adds up to one thrilling weekend!

what we do

Membership SocialMembership socials provide an opportunity toreconnect with old friends and meet new mem-bers. Historically, a membership meeting beginswith a social hour with a cash bar, followed bythe evening’s program. The content of the pro-gram varies, sometimes featuring a “slide show”from a recent event, or a guest speaker such asaccomplished Speed World Challenge racerRandy Pobst.

RMR’s membership socials, unless otherwisestated, are held the first Thursday of the month.Different venues and topics will keep the meet-ings fresh and inviting. Watch RMR Porsche Newsand the RMR Web site for details. And if youhave any ideas for a program, talk to the Pro-gram Committee Chair or a Board member!

Tech SessionA tech session is just what it sounds like—a ses-sion in which a technical topic is discussed. Notjust for gearheads, a tech session may demon-strate practical, “do-it-yourself” procedures suchas brake bleeding. Tech sessions are usually pre-sented by experienced Porsche technicians,

many of whom are sponsors of RMR events andRMR Porsche News.

RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year, typi-cally in the “off months” when few driving eventstake place. In addition, numerous tech sessionsare offered at Porsche Parade.

Concours d’EleganceA concours is essentially a car show, in whichcontestants endeavor to present their cars in asclose to “perfect” condition as possible. A num-ber of judged categories usually exist, typicallydifferentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356,Boxster) and level of preparation (“daily driver”or “full preparation” or somewhere in between).Cars sometimes may be entered as “displayonly,” for owners who wish to participate but notcompete.

RMR participates in a handful of local concoursevents each year, including the annual ExoticSports Car Show and Concours d’Elegance, ben-efiting United Cerebral Palsy Colorado. Theannual Porsche Parade also hosts a major con-cours each year.
