    INTRODUCTION

    This group is responsible for covering the vehicle

    i n s t r u m en t p a n e l. H o w e ve r, beca u s e t h e i n s t r u m en t

    panel serves as the command center of the vehicle, i t

    i s a v er y com pl ex u n it . Th e i n st r u m en t p a n el i s

    designed to house the controls and monitors for stan-

    d a r d a n d op t i on a l p ow e r t r a i n s , cl i ma t e con t r o l s y s -

    t em s, a u di o s ys tem s, lig ht in g s ys tem s, s a fet y

    NOTE: This group covers both Left-Hand Drive

    (LHD) and Right-Hand Drive (RHD) versions of thismodel. Whenever required and feasible, the RHDversions of affected vehicle components have beenconstructed as mirror-image of the LHD versions.While most of the illustrations used in this group

    represent only the LHD version, the diagnostic andservice procedures outlined can generally beapplied to either version. Exceptions to this rulehave been clearly identified as LHD or RHD, if a

    special illustration or procedure is required.

    INSTRUMENT PANEL

    This instrument panel uses a full-width structuralp l a s t i c f o u n d a t i o n a s i t s p r i m a r y s u p p o r t . W h e n t h e

    two primary molded plastic components of this struc-

    ture are vibration welded together they provide supe-

    r i o r i n s t r u m e n t p a n e l s t i f f n e s s a n d i n t e g r i t y t o h e l p

    r ed uce b uz zes , s q uea k s, a n d r a t t les ev en on t h e

    bumpiest roads.

    This type of construction also provides improved

    e ne rg y a b s or pt i on w h i ch , i n con ju n ct i on w i t h t h e

    dual airbag modules and seat belts, helps to improve

    occupant protection. This founda tion structure also

    s e r v e s a s t h e d u c t i n g f o r t h e h e a t i n g a n d a i r c o n d i -

    t i on i n g s y s t em p a n e l o u t l et s , w h i ch g r ea t l y r e du ce s

    t h e n u m ber of com p on e n t s u s ed ov er con v en t i on a l

    instrument panel construction.

    M od u l a r i n s t r u m en t p a n e l c on s t r u ct i on a l l ow s a l l

    of t h e g a u g e s a n d con t r o ls t o be s er v ice d f r o m t h e

    f r on t of t h e p a n el . I n a d d i t ion , m os t of t h e i n st r u -

    m e n t p a n e l e le ct r i ca l com p on e n t s ca n be a c ce ss edwithout complete instrument panel removal . If neces-

    s a r y , t h e i n s t r u m e n t p a n e l c a n be r e m o v e d f r o m t h e

    vehicle as an assembly.

    Removal of the steering column opening cover and

    knee blocker provides access t o t he steering column

    m ou n t s , t h e s t e e r in g col u m n w i r in g , t h e h e a d l a m p

    switch, the electronic combination flasher, and much

    of the instrument panel wiring. Removal of the glove

    box provides access to the heating and air condition-

    i n g e le ct r i ca l a n d v a cu u m h a r n es se s, t h e b low e r

    m ot or r el a y, t h e r a d i o a n t en n a coa x ia l ca b l e, t h e

    l o w e r p a s s e n g e r s i d e a i r ba g m o u n t s , a n d a d d i t i o n a l

    I n s t r u m en t p a n e l r e m ov a l i s r e q u ir e d f or s er v i ce of

    most internal components of the heating and air con-ditioning housing.

    INSTRUMENT CLUSTER

    Tw o ba s i c i n s t r u m en t cl u st e r s a r e of f er e d on t h i s

    model: low-line or high-line. Both clusters are electro-

    mechanical units that uti l ize integrated circuitry and

    information carried on the Chrysler Coll ision Detec-

    tion (CCD) data bus network for control of al l gauges

    and many of the indicator lamps. These clusters also

    incorporate a vacuum fluorescent display tube for t he

    d i g it a l od om e t er /t r i p od om e t er d i s pl a y f u n ct i on s .

    Some variations of each cluster exist due to optional

    equipment and regulatory requirements.

    The low-line cluster includes t he following an alog

    gauges:

    Fu e l g a u g e

    Speedometer.

    This cluster includes provisions for the following

    indicator lamps:

    Airbag indicator lamp

    Anti-lock brake system lamp

    The high-line cluster replaces some of the indicator

    l a m ps f ou n d i n t h e l ow -l in e cl us t er w i t h a n a l og

    gauges. The high-line cluster includes t he following

    indicator lamps found in the low-line cluster.

    several predetermined locat ions on the gauge faces in

    a prescribed sequence. For more informa tion on this

    for more information on these cluster circuitry func-

    tions.

    The instrument clusters for this model are serviced

    only as complete units. If a cluster gauge or the clus-

    ter circuit board are faulty, the entire cluster must be

    r e pl a ce d . Th e cl u s t er l en s , t h e h ood a n d m a s k , t h e

    rear housing cover and the odometer reset knob boot

    are available for service. Also, the individual cluster

    lamp bulbs and bulb holders can be serviced.

    GAUGE

    Wi t h t h e i g n i t i on s w i t ch i n t h e O n o r S t a r t p os i -

    t i on s , v o lt a g e i s s u pp li ed t o a l l g a u g es t h r o ug h t h e

    instrument cluster electronic circuit boar d. With the

    ignition switch in the Off position, voltage is not sup-

    p li ed t o t h e g a u g es . Th e g a u g es d o n ot a c cu r a t e ly

    i n d ica t e a n y v eh i cl e con d i t i on u n l es s t h e i g n it i on

    s w i t c h i s i n t h e O n o r St a r t p o s i t i o n s .

    All gauges, except the odometer, are air core mag-

    n et i c u n it s . Tw o f ix ed e le ct r om a g n et i c coi ls a r e

    located within the gauge. These coils are wrapped at

    r i g h t a n g l e s t o e a c h o t h e r a r o u n d a m o v a bl e p e r m a -

    n en t m a g n et . Th e m ov a b le m a g n et i s s u sp en d edwithin the coils on one end of a shaft . The gauge nee-

    d l e i s a t t a c h e d t o t h e o t h e r e n d o f t h e s h a f t .

    strength. The current flowing through the second coil

    i s ch a n g e d by t h e i n s t r u m en t cl u st e r e le ct r o n ic ci r -

    cu it r y i n r es pon se t o m es sa g es r ecei ved on t h e

    Chrysler Coll ision Detection (CCD ) data bus netw ork.

    The ga uge needle moves as the movable perman ent

    m a g n e t a l i g n s i t s e l f t o t h e c h a n g i n g m a g n e t i c f i e l d s

    created around i t by the electromagnets. The instru-ment cluster circuitry is programmed to move al l of

    the ga uge needles back to t he low end of t heir respec-

    t i v e s c a l e s a f t e r t h e i g n i t i o n s w i t c h i s t u r n e d t o t h e

    Off position.

    INDICATOR LAMP

    Indicator lamps are located in the instrument clus-

    t e r a n d a r e s er v ed b y t h e c lu s t er ci r cu it b oa r d a n d

    con n ect or s. M a n y of t h e i nd ica t or l a mps i n t h e

    i n s t r u m en t cl u st e r a r e con t r o ll ed by t h e i n s t r u m en t

    cl u st e r ci r cu i t r y i n r e sp on s e t o m e ss a g e s r e ce iv ed

    over the Chrysler Coll ision Detection (CCD) data bus

    network.Th e a n t i -l ock br a k e s y s t em l a m p , br a k e w a r n i n g

    l a m p , f ou r -w h e e l d r i ve i n d ica t or l a m p s, h e a d l a m p

    h i g h be a m i n d i c a t o r l a m p , l o w w a s h e r f l u i d w a r n i n g

    lamp, seat belt reminder lamp driver seat belt switch

    i npu t , a n d t u rn s ig na l i nd ica t or l a m ps a r e h a r d-

    w i r e d . Th e i n s t r u m en t cl u s t er ci r cu i t r y u s es C C D

    data bus messages from the Powertrain Control Mod-

    ule (PCM) an d Airbag Control Module (ACM) to con-

    t r o l a l l o f t h e r e m a i n i n g i n d i c a t o r l a m p s .

    JUNCTION BLOCK

    Th e ju n ct i on bl ock i s m ou n t e d on t h e r i g h t cow l

    s id e i n n er p a n el u n d er t h e i n st r u m en t p a n el . I t i s

    concealed behind the right cowl side trim panel . The

    ju n ct i on b lock s er v es t o s im pl if y a n d ce nt r a l iz e

    numerous electrical components.

    The junction block combines the functions previ-

    ou s ly p r ov i de d by a s ep a r a t e f u se bl ock m od u l e a n d

    r e la y ce n t er. I t con t a i n s f u s es , ci r cu i t br ea k e r s a n d

    r el a ys . I t a l so el im in a t es t h e n eed f or n um er ou s

    splice connections a nd serves in place of a bulkhead

    connector between many of the engine compartment,

    i n s t r u m en t p a n e l, a n d bod y w i r e h a r n e ss es .

    The junction block can not be repaired a nd, i f fa ultyo r d a m a g e d , i t m u s t be r e p l a c e d .

    DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

    COOLANT TEMP ERATURE GAUGE

    The coolant temperature gauge gives an indication

    of t h e e n gi n e cool a n t t e m pe r a t u r e . Th e i n s t r u m en t

    cluster circuitry controls t he gauge pointer position.

    Th e i n st r u m en t cl us t er ci r cu it r y ca l cu la t e s t h e

    proper gauge pointer position based upon an engine

    coolant temperature message received from the Pow-

    ertrain Control Module (PCM) on the Chrysler Coll i-sion Detection (CCD) data bus.

    Th e P C M u s es a n i n pu t f r om t h e e n g in e c ool a n t

    t e mp er a t u r e s en s or a n d i n t er n a l p rog r a m m in g t o

    d e ci d e w h a t e n gi n e c ool a n t t e m pe r a t u r e m e ss a g e i s

    required. The PCM then sends the proper message to

    t h e i n s t r u m e n t c l u s t e r o n t h e C C D d a t a bu s .

    I f t h e P C M m e ss a g e i n d i ca t e s t h a t cool a n t t e m pe r-

    ature is high, the instrument cluster circuitry moves

    t h e g a u g e n e e d l e i n t o t h e be g i n n i n g o f t h e r e d z o n e

    o n t h e g a u g e f a c e , t u r n s o n t h e C h e c k Ga u g e s l a m p ,

    a n d g e n e r a t e s a s i n g l e c h i m e t o n e . I f t h e P C M m e s -

    s a g e i n d ica t e s t h a t cool a n t t e m pe r a t u r e i s cr i t i ca l ,

    t h e i n st r u m en t cl us t er ci r cu it r y m ov es t h e g a u g en e e d l e t o t h e s t o p a t t h e e n d o f t h e r e d z o n e o n t h e

    gauge face.

    The engine coolant temperature sensor is instal led

    cluster circuitry calculates the proper gauge pointer

    p os i t ion ba s e d u p on a f u el l ev el m e ss a g e r e ce iv ed

    f r om t h e P o w e r t r a i n C o n t r ol M od u l e (P C M ) on t h e

    Chrysler Coll ision Detection (CCD) data bus.

    T h e P C M u s e s a n i n p u t f r o m t h e f u e l g a u g e s e n d -

    i n g u n i t a n d i n t er n a l p rog r a m m in g t o d e ci de w h a t

    fuel level message is required. The PCM then sends

    t h e p r op er m e ss a g e t o t h e i n s t r u me n t cl u st e r on t h e

    high-line instrument cluster, when the PCM message

    indicates that the fuel level is below one-eighth of a

    t h e l ow f ue l w a r n in g l a m p a n d g en er a t e s a s in g le

    chime tone.

    The fuel ga uge sending unit is mounted t o the elec-

    t r i c f u e l p u m p m o d u l e l o c a t e d i n s i d e t h e f u e l t a n k .

    ODOMETER AND TRIP ODOMETER

    Th e od om et e r a n d t h e t r i p od om et e r s h a r e t h e

    s a m e v a c u u m f l u o r e s c e n t d i g i t a l d i s p l a y t u be i n t h e

    instrument cluster circuit board. Each gives an indi-cation of the distance the vehicle has travelled. How-

    ever, by depressing the reset knob on the face of the

    instrument cluster, the display can be switched from

    odometer to trip odometer. Depressing the reset knob

    for longer than two seconds while in the trip odome-

    t e r m od e w i ll r e se t t h e t r i p o d om e t er t o z e ro. Th e

    odometer and trip odometer display values are based

    on distance pulse messages received from the Power-

    t r a i n C o n t r ol M od u l e (P C M ) on t h e C h r y s l er C o ll i-

    sion Detection (CCD) data bus.

    prior to the ignition switch being turned off.

    OIL PRESSURE GAUGE

    T h e o i l p r e s s u r e g a u g e g i v e s a n i n d i c a t i o n o f t h e

    engine oil pressure. The instrument cluster circuitry

    controls t he gauge pointer position. The instrument

    cluster circuitry calculates the proper gauge pointer

    position based upon an engine oil pressure message

    received from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM)on the Chrysler Coll ision Detection (CCD) data bus.

    AIRBAG INDICATOR LAMP

    The airbag indicator lamp gives an indication when

    t h e a i r ba g s y s t e m i s f a u l t y o r i n o p e r a t i v e . T h e l a m p

    i s t u r n ed on by t h e i n s t r u m en t cl u st e r ci r cu i t r y f or

    a b ou t s ev en s econ d s w h e n t h e i gn i t ion s w i t ch i s

    t u r n ed t o t h e O n p os it i on a s a b u lb t e st . Af t er t h e

    inoperative.

    Each t ime the instrument cluster circuitry receivesa l a m p -on m e ss a g e f r o m t h e AC M , i t w i l l l i g h t t h e

    lamp for twelve seconds or the duration of the airbag

    s ys t em m a lf un ct i on , w h i ch ev er i s l on ger. I f t h e

    i n s t r u m en t cl u st e r r e ce iv es n o l a m p m e ss a g e s f r om

    the ACM for more than five seconds, i t wil l l ight the

    l a m p f or t w e l v e s e con d s or u n t i l a n o t h e r l a m p -of f

    message from the ACM, whichever is longer.

    ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM LAMP

    The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) lamp gives an

    i n d i c a t i o n w h e n t h e A B S s y s t e m i s f a u l t y o r i n o p e r -

    ative. The lamp is hard-wired in the instrument clus-

    t e r, a n d i s com p le t el y con t r o ll ed by t h e C o nt r o ll er

    An t i -l ock B r a k e (C AB ). I t r e ce iv es ba t t e r y v ol t a g e

    through the instrument cluster fused ignition switch

    output feed circuit , and is grounded by the CAB. The

    l a m p i s t u r n e d o n by t h e C A B f o r a bo u t t w o s e c o n d s

    when the ignition switch is turned to the On position

    a s a bu lb t e s t . Af t e r t h e bu l b t e st , t h e C AB t u r n s t h e

    lamp on or off based upon the results of the ABS sys-

    tem self-tests.

    The cruise-on indicator lamp gives an indicat ion

    when the vehicle speed control system is turned on,

    even when the system is not currently engaged. The

    lamp is controlled by the instrument cluster circuitry

    ba s e d u p on a m e ss a g e r e ce iv ed f r om t h e P o w e r t r a i n

    C on t r ol M od u le (P C M ) on t h e C h r y sl er C ol li si on

    Detection (CCD) data bus.

    The fuel ga uge sending unit is mounted t o the elec-

    tric fuel pump module inside the fuel t ank. The send-i n g u n i t h a s a f l o a t a t t a c h e d t o t h e e n d o f a s w i n g -

    a r m . Th e f loa t m ov es u p or d ow n w i t h in t h e f u el

    tank as the fuel level changes. As the float moves, an

    electrical conta ct on t he pivot end of t he sw ing-ar m

    wipes across a resistor coil , which changes the resis-

    The low oil pressure warning lamp gives an indica-

    tion when the engine oil pressure is low. The lamp is

    Th e w a s h e r f l u i d l e ve l s e n sor u s es a f l oa t i n t h e

    reservoir t o monitor the fluid level . The up an d down

    a c t i on of t h e f l oa t op en s or cl os es t h e s w i t ch w i t h i n

    the washer fluid level sensor that provides a ground

    signal to the instrument cluster circuitry.

    If the instrument cluster circuitry senses a ground

    i n pu t f r om t h e w a s h e r f lu id l ev el s en s or f or m or e

    t h a n a bou t t h i r t y s e con d s , i t t u r n s on t h e l ow w a s h er

    fluid warning lamp. This helps to reduce the effects

    of fluid sloshing within the reservoir. This lamp also

    l a t ch es . O n ce t h e l a m p h a s b ee n t u r n ed on , i t w i ll

    r e m a i n o n u n t i l w a s h e r f l u i d i s a d d e d t o t h e r e s e r -voir and the ignition switch is cycled.

    MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP

    The Check Engine or Malfunction Indicator Lamp

    (M I L ) g i v e s a n i n d i c a t i o n w h e n t h e P o w e r t r a i n C o n -

    UPSHIFT INDICATOR LAM P

    Ve hi cl es eq u ip ped w i t h a m a n u a l t r a n s m is s ion

    have an upshift indicator lamp. The upshift indicator

    lamp gives an indication when the driver should shift

    t o t h e n e x t h i g h es t g ea r f or t h e bes t f u el e con om y.

    The lamp is controlled by the instrument cluster cir-

    cuitry based upon a message received from the Pow-

    er t r a in C on t r ol M od ul e (P C M ) on t h e C h r ys ler

    Coll ision Detection (CCD) data bus.

    Th e P C M u s e s i n p u t s f r om m a n y s en s or s a n d i t s

    i n t e r n a l p r o g r a m m i n g t o d e c i d e w h e t h e r t h e e n g i n e

    speed and load conditions are correct for a transmis-

    (1 ) I f t h e i n d i c a t o r l a m p s o p e r a t e , bu t n o n e o f t h e

    g a u g e s o p e r a t e , g o t o St e p 2 . I f a l l o f t h e g a u g e s a n d

    the da ta bus message-controlled indicator la mps a re

    inoperative, go to Step 5.

    (2) Check the Ignition-Off Draw (IOD) fuse in the

    P o w e r Di s t r i bu t i o n C e n t e r (P DC ). I f O K, g o t o St e p3. If not OK, repair the shorted circuit or component

    a s r e q u i r e d a n d r e p l a c e t h e f a u l t y f u s e .

    (3) C h e ck f or b a t t e ry v ol t a g e a t t h e I O D f us e i n

    t h e P D C . I f O K , g o t o S t e p 4 . I f n o t O K , r e p a i r t h e

    open circuit as required.

    (4) D is con n ect a n d i sol a t e t h e b a t t e ry n eg a t i ve

    cable. Remove the instrument cluster as described in

    this group. Connect the battery negative cable. Check

    for bat tery volta ge a t the fused B (+ ) circuit cavity of

    t h e l ef t i n s t r u m en t cl u st e r w i r e h a r n e s s con n e ct o r

    (connector A). If OK, go t o t he Actua tor Test. If not

    OK , r epa i r t h e open cir cu it t o t h e I OD f us e a s

    required.(5) C h e ck t h e s w i t ch e d i g n it i on f u s e i n t h e ju n c-

    t i o n bl o c k . I f O K, g o t o St e p 6 . I f n o t O K, r e p a i r t h e

    shorted circuit or component as required and replace

    fuse in the junction block. If OK, go to Step 7. If not

    volta ge a t the fused ignition switch output (run/sta rt)

    circuit cavity of the left instrument cluster wire har-

    ness connector (connector A). If OK, go to the Actua-

    t or Tes t . I f n ot O K , r ep a ir t h e op en ci r cu it t o t h e

    junction block as required.

    (10) Di s con n e ct a n d i s ol a t e t h e ba t t e r y n e g a t i v e

    cable. Remove the instrument cluster as described in

    this group. Check for continuity between the ground

    circuit cavity of the left instrument cluster wire har-

    n e ss con n e ct o r (con n e ct o r A) a n d a g ood g r ou n d .

    There should be continuity. If OK, go to the Actua tor

    Test. If not OK, repair the open circuit to ground a s

    required.

    ACTUATOR TEST

    Th e i n s t r u m en t cl u st e r a ct u a t or t e s t w i l l p u t t h e

    cluster into i ts self-diagnostic mode. I n this mode the

    cluster wil l position each of the gauge needles at var-

    i o u s s p e c i f i e d c a l i br a t i o n p o i n t s , a n d t u r n a l l o f t h e

    CCD data bus message-controlled lamps on and off at

    specified time intervals (Fig. 1) or (Fig. 2).

    Successful completion of the actuator test wil l con-

    firm that the cluster circuitry, gauges, and lamps are

    capable of opera ting as designed. However, th ere may

    s t i l l b e a p r o b l e m w i t h t h e C C D d a t a b u s , t h e P o w -

    e r t r a i n C o n t r ol M od u l e (P C M ), t h e Ai r ba g C o nt r o l

    Module (ACM), or the inputs to one of these modules.

    U s e a DR B s c a n t o o l a n d t h e p r o p e r Di a g n o s t i c P r o -

    cedures manual for testing of these components.

    If an individual gauge does not respond properly orat al l during t he Actua tor Test, the instrument clus-

    t e r s h ou l d be r e mov ed . H o w e ve r, ch e ck t h e g a u g e

    m ou n t in g s cr ew s on t h e p ri n t ed ci r cu it b oa r d f or

    proper t ightness before considering instrument clus-

    t e r r e pl a c em e n t . I f t h e m ou n t i n g s cr e w s ch e ck O K,

    replace the faulty cluster.

    (1) B e g in t h e t es t w i t h t h e i g n it i on s w i t ch i n t h e

    Off position.

    (2) Depress the trip odometer reset button.

    (3) While holding t he trip odometer reset button

    d e pr e ss ed , t u r n t h e i g n it i on s w i t ch t o t h e O n p os i -

    t i o n , bu t d o n o t s t a r t t h e e n g i n e .

    (4) Release the trip odometer reset button.

    (5) Compare the operation of the suspect gauge(s)

    a nd/or la mp(s) wit h the chart (Fig. 1) or (Fig. 2).

    (6) The cluster will exit the self-diagnostic mode at

    the completion of the test , or i f the ignition switch is

    turned to the Off position.(7) G o ba ck t o S t ep 1 t o r epea t t he t est , if

    required.

    COOLANT TEMP ERATURE GAUGE

    If the problem being diagnosed is relat ed to coolan t

    t e m pe r a t u r e g a u g e a c cu r a c y, be ce r t a i n t o con f ir m
