CTI 3D Giant Theater open MON-SUNThe CTI 3D Giant Theater is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. At present, we have a total of 27 assistive listening devices. Nine of these devices (Captiview) provide closed captions. We also have 18 devices that enhance the volume for those visitors with hearing issues and those devices are also designed to provide a descriptive narrative of on screen actions on an additional audio channel. At the present, not all of the documentary movies we have shown in the theater have been digitally encoded by the documentary movie distributor with the necessary codes for the Captiview closed caption device and the DoReMi descriptive narrative capabilities. We have been informed that in the near future more documentary movies are being encoded with closed caption viewer Captiview and the DoReMi descriptive narrative features. The theater provides hearing impaired customers with a copy of the movie’s script with a red flashlight, for low light level reading. Customers in need of these devices should call our reservations number, (901)636-2362, so that we can make appropriate accommodations to serve their needs.

The operation of the Pink Palace Family of Museums is a successful public-private partnership.

DIRECTOR'S DISPATCH An important part of the Pink Palace Family of Museums may be under, or just plain off, your radar. It’s our Board. To some, “the Board” may sound like an abstract, high falutin’ entity. In our case, far from it. Ours is what is known as,“a working Board.”

I suppose that implies there is another kind, and I feel sorry for institutions that have them. Our Board definitely works. At what? For one thing they are ambassadors. They speak for the value of what we do for our communities. The very fact they volunteer to serve says a great deal, but they go above and beyond that by representing us far and wide.

They also help us garner much needed private funding. How? It starts through their donating themselves so that they have “skin in the game.” That doesn’t mean they all are wealthy, but they all make personally significant contributions. Then they speak up on our behalf to companies, foundations, and private individuals. Their

example and their words are powerful because they are volunteers. They do it not for personal gain, but because they believe in what we do, and that is priceless.

They also offer counsel and experience. They come from many different walks of life—private industry, education, and so on. Individually they are wise; together they provide a wealth of perspectives on what we do.

Finally, they vouch for our transparency and honesty. The 50 cent word for that is “governance.” Having so many smart, engaged people participating ensures we use our resources wisely.

All the good things you will find in this and other issues of Museum Scope benefit from our Board’s work. On behalf of our museum system, a big thank you to them for what they do!

EXHIBITS

Scenes of the DinosaursJuly 2 - October 2, 2016

Immerse yourself in the wonder of the planet’s most infamous prehistoric predators. The exhibit includes a hands-on Duckbill, Dino Dig Box, rub stations and life-like renditions of late Cretaceous period dinosaurs.

Albertosaurus - The slightly smaller, fearsome cousin of the Tyrannosaurus Rex. Its smaller size made it a faster runner than its larger cousin.

Euoplocephalus - Often called "tank dinosaur" because of its armor plating. A blow from the tail club could smash the teeth or break the leg of an attacking predator.

Apatosaurus - One of the largest animals to have ever walked on Earth, averaging around 75ft in length and a weight of over 23 metric tons. Also commonly known by the incorrect name "Brontosaurus."

Maiasaura - Nicknamed the "good mother dinosaur," this duck-billed dino is one of the few species for which scientists have incontestable evidence of herding behavior.

Pachycephalosaurus - Best known for the very thick dome at the top of its skull and the bony protusions from its snout and rear of dome. One of the few wildly popular dinosaurs with a very incomplete fossil record.

Tenontosaurus - This plant-eating dinosaur could walk both bi-pedally and on all fours. It used its front legs to grasp objects and defend itself.

Deinonychus - Like its Asian cousin, Velociraptor, this dinosaur had single, large curving claws on both hind feet. Deinonychus was actually the model for the Velociraptors in the Jurassic Park movie franchise.

Pteranodon - Not actually a dinosaur, but a close relative, the Pteranodon was a flying reptile. Its wing-span was longer than that of any known bird. It had a crest on its head, no teeth at all, and a very short tail.

CTI 3D GIANT THEATER

Jean-Michel Cousteau's Secret Ocean 3DJune 25 - November 18, 2016

Jean-Michel Cousteau, son of ocean pioneer Jacques Cousteau, offers a breakthrough look at a secret world within the ocean. This is perhaps the biggest story of all – that the smallest life in the sea is the mightiest force on which we all depend. Dive into this secret world that will leave you in awe of the beauty and diversity of the oceans, and inspire a desire to protect the source of all life on our planet.

Locally sponsored by:

Fun Facts:

• The name plankton is derived from the Greek planktos, meaning errant, thus “wanderer” or “drifter.”

• With the sea anemone, food enters and waste leaves through the same opening, its mouth.

• The banded cleaner shrimp became very popular in 2003 thanks to the Pixar film Finding Nemo where it plays Jacques, the cleaner shrimp with a French accent. It advertises its cleaning services, waiting for fish to swim by and signal they need cleaning.

• The octopus has two large eyes and excellent eyesight, but is deaf. Most have two hearts, but some have three!

• To survive in the deep ocean, octopuses have evolved the copper-containing protein called hemocyanin that is more efficient at transporting oxygen than hemoglobin when water temperature is very low and oxygen is scarce.

• Eels let cleaner shrimp and other small cleaner fish free them of dead skin and parasites. This is an example of a mutualistic relationship, where both animals benefit. The eel remains healthy while the cleaner gets a meal!

• The giant squid is mysterious as it lives in the deep waters of the Pacific Ocean and has hardly ever been seen. The largest known specimen was 57 ft. long.
