Dan’s Drive Time

We made it to September. It is a great time of the year to enjoy top down weather driving. It is a good way to see fall colors. This is a good time of the year to have a convertible.

Our last meeting was our annual cookout put on by Cascade Mazda. Thanks again for a very nice event. The next few months Cascade is going under construction with renovations. We will still be having our meetings there at the dealership but will be in a different location on there grounds. Someone will be there to direct you to where the meeting will be held.

Another reminder that elections will be coming up in December. Please consider running for A position.

The December meeting is our annual holiday party and it is on December 17, 2015 and will be at St. Michael's this year. This is the same place we have had the last two holiday parties. Final details and the cost will be posted on the website when they are available.

See you soon.

August AWD Rich and Linda Placko The Around the World dinner for August was at the Brew Garden in Middleburg Hts. on August 11th hosted by Rich and Linda Placko. Had great weather and lots of good food for all. Those attending were; Bob and Jan Stefancic, Dan and Terri Cali, Joe and Sandy Wilick, Karen and Dave Baker, Gary and Char Davis, Mike and Lois Kerklo, Jim and Joyce Simmelink, Jim and Marilyn Nenadal, Art and Maureen Davis, Gary and Barb Savage, Jeff and Robin Arona Thanks for all that attended.

2015 Northcoast Miata Club Picnic Wrap-up Bob & Betty Belding The date was July 11, 2015 and the weather cooperated with us, the sky was clear and temperatures were moderate. There were thirty nine Miata’s lined up by the highway for “others” to observe. What an impressive sight!! Sixty seven people attended, a good time was had by everyone. Our cooks, Denny Moeller and Dave Baker were fantastic and were ably assisted by Jeff Kramer and Gil Miller. Thanks for a marvelous job, men!! Members present were (and I hope I didn’t miss anyone) John & Donna Garsteck, Alicia & Denny Moeller, Cheryl & Gil Miller, John & Jeanne Embree, Tim Graham, Bill & Rancie Titley, Scott & Mary Miller, Maryann Tower & Dennis Beckman, Nicholas Bugosh, Greg & Charlene Davis, Len & Nancy Thomas, Mike & Lois Kerklo, Rich & Linda Placko, Jim & Marilyn Nedadal, Doug & Carol Leavens, Dave & Karen Baker, Jim & Mindy McCartney, Al Muscutar, Ava Singerman & Bob Palmer, Margaret Watterson, Bob Maver & Becca Gustavel, John & Margaret Dascoli, Greg & Judy Selby, Bob Haseley, Bill & Sharon Proctor, Bob & Jan Stefancic, Charlie Welter, Jeff & Lisa Kramer, Dave McCuen & Jan McWilliams, Denny & Linda Blacklock, Tiffany & Jared Fonner, Bill Shepler & Joanie Rogers, Barb & Gary Savage, Charlie & Marlene Rodgers, Al Butler & Greg Gretz, Sandy & Joe Wilick Bob & Betty Belding, and President Dan Cali. I want to thank Denny, Alicia and Betty for all their help setting up, cleaning up and putting up with me. Denny helped haul picnic tables plus furnishing his grill for cooking the burgers. Thanks Bro. Dave McCuen organized and set up the rodeo games and helped run the games along with Dan Cali, Bob & Jan Stefancic and others. Thanks also to Doug & Carol Leavens for organizing a large Miata caravan to the Picnic. Great idea Doug & Carol. They had to rearrange the route due to ODOT replacing a bridge in Salem. ALSO – Alicia Moeller and Lisa Kramer worked their cleanup magic in the kitchen as the picnic was winding down. THANK YOU TWO ANGELS FOR YOUR HELP!! THANKS TO ALL WHO ATTENDED. We enjoyed hosting our eleventh Northcoast Club Miata Picnic. Bob & Betty Belding

Our 3rd Annual RNRCSM (rescheduled) Car Show, a.k.a., FYBO Car Show! Jim & Marilyn Nenadal Five Miatas met at Alexander and Dunham Roads, for a short group ride to the Solon Car Show. 7 more Miata’s met us there. We were all greeted with “Miatas are in the first row.” It’s nice to be treated special. However, due to the chilly weather, they had an overall poor showing of other cars. We tried to stay warm and it broke up early. Better luck next year? Jim & Marilyn

Thank You Rich & Lilas Velardo Lilas and I would like to thank all of our friends in the Miata Club for your support & prayers the past couple of weeks. As many of you know, Lilas had a cancerous kidney removed, the prognosis is excellent though and she continues to feel better.

Below, at the Solon car show. Two rows of Miatas and lots of other interesting cars. There was even a Maserati Merak in attendance. The ’60 Chevy wagon with the attached Whizzer was my favorite.

Around the World dinner, October 7th Charlie and Marlene Rodgers Enjoy a tropical Around the World dinner at the Caribbean Cowboy in North Royalton on October 7th. The menu ranges from pulled pork, brisket, ribs, mahi mahi, tilapia, burgers, wraps, and more in a fun atmosphere with a blended feel of the Caribbean and Country Western. There is plenty of parking at the uniquely new Caribbean Cowboy at 6031 Royalton Rd. Cocktails at 6:30 p.m. and dinner at 7:00 p.m. Contact Charlie and Marlene Rodgers 440-539-0998 or [email protected]

Only one opening left! But we will start a waiting list if it fills. Gather at 12:00 Noon in Dalton at the Marathon Station/Bell Store/Subway on the northeast corner of SR 94 at US 30. Subway, Wendy’s, Dalton Dari-ette and two Marathon stations are at the intersection. After a drivers’ meeting shortly after Noon the tour starts at 12:30. The tour is approximately 120 miles, from 12:30 – 5:00 covering lots of pretty scenery on curving roads and it will have two pit stops. Radios will be tuned to Channel 5, tour instructions are clear and easy to follow and we will make sure no one gets left behind or lost by asking everyone to always keep the car behind them in sight at turns. The tour has two distinctly different personalities. The first part is on quiet back roads in Amish country where the pace will be compatible with the Amish lifestyle of buggies and pedestrians in Holmes, Wayne and Stark counties. After pit stop #1 the pace will pick up considerably as we drive some of the smoothest, most twisting roads to be found in this part of Ohio, through the Appalachian foothills in parts of Tuscarawas, Carroll, Columbiana and Jefferson counties. The tour ends at the Canal Tavern of Zoar at about 5:00, where we will unwind after the tour with a fun and delicious up-scale menu of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, a few dinner choices and a full choice of spirits. The tavern was built in 1829 by the Zoar Separatists as an inn for canal travelers. The inn’s historic decor, patio and the wine cellar room are all real treats to enjoy, as are the menu and the service. www.canaltavernofzoar.com Our private dining room has limited space, so it is necessary to have a 20 car limit on the tour. We have room for 1 more car, but will start a waiting list if it fills. Bob Maurer and Becca Gustavel RSVP by October 1. [email protected]

‘Looking For Curves’ Tour, Sunday, October 11, 2015 Bob Maurer and Becca Gustavel

Halloween Boo Tour 2015, October 24th John James & Rod Barkley Rod Barkley and I will be doing the 2015 Boo Tour, which is scheduled on Saturday, October 24th, which is the weekend before Halloween. This year we will be visiting some ghostly sites in the central Ohio area that have a history of paranormal activity. Our plan will be to drive on some nice back roads towards our Boo destinations. We will be sharing tales and stories of ghostly happenings at these various sites and could encounter a ghost or two. Once the tour is completed, we will have dinner at a nice restaurant to recap the Boo tour along with some good food and conversation. We will be meeting at the Wolf Creek Environmental Center, 6100 Ridge Road (Route 94) in Sharon Center. It is located just north of the circle in Sharon Center. We will be meeting at 1:00 PM in the parking lot. The Boor Tour will begin at 1:45 PM as begin our journey into the twilight zone. Anyone interested in signing up for the tour can RSVP at (216) 429-1304 or by e-mail at [email protected]. The last day to RSVP will be Saturday, October 17th. Even though, I am not placing a limit on the number of cars for the Boo tour. There will be no reservations accepted after October 17th. (On the day of the tour you can call my cell Phone to reach me (216)-548-1889).

Mazda3 Announced as One of Autotrader’s 2015 Best Cars for Dog Lovers IRVINE, Calif. (August 26, 2015) – The dog days of summer may be behind us, but Mazda3 is still lapping up awards, with the latest being Autotrader’s “Best Cars for Dog Lovers.” This marks the 16th award for Mazda3 in the last eight months – 4.7 dog years to Mazda’s canine audience. Mazda3 is one of nine vehicles that fetched Autotrader’s dog-friendly award for 2015. Autotrader’s editors looked at criteria such as having fold-flat rear seats, a rear lift gate, a low ride height, airy cabin and underfloor storage to determine its award-winners. According to Autotrader, more than 56 percent of dog-owners shop for vehicles suited for the pets. One in four have or would consider taking a pet on a test-drive to gauge whether a vehicle is a good fit for a four-legged friend. Additional information about Autotrader’s Best Cars for Dog Lovers can be found at: http://www.autotrader.com/best-cars/9-must-shop-cars-for-dog-lovers-242929

2016 MX-5 Miata Road Test Rich Velardo The ND is starting to show up on dealer lots, many of the pre-launch questions about handling, power and interior accommodations are being answered as more of us get to test drive or buy the new Miatas. As some of you already know, the new Miata fixes a whole lot of issues that the NC had, starting with the floppy suspension and ending with a much nicer interior and comfier seats. Many would argue that there’s not enough power, it’s down from 167 HP to 155 but the torque is up from 140 lb. ft. to 148 and with less weight the ND is actually the quickest Miata that Mazda has produced. Even with the automatic, I found the power to be OK, this was an automatic that I test drove and if I kept it in "sport" mode it moved along just fine. Still, like the NC before it, it could use just a little more power, nothing that a tune & intake/exhaust wouldn't fix, there’s no need to go radical looking for more power. It will be interesting to see if the aftermarket can adapt turbos and superchargers to the high compression Skyactive engine, but most drivers will be quite happy with the power as it is from Mazda. I'd like to see the suspension tightened up a bit, there’s still too much body roll and lowered an inch. But overall there are really no suspension complaints, Mazda did a much better job here than with the NC and the aftermarket will take care of providing a more “sporty” suspension for those of us who would prefer a tighter feeling car. So far the new Miata impresses quite a bit, nice work on the drivetrain & suspension Mazda! But there are things to quibble about too, why is there less storage space inside and no glove box? While the infotainment screen is very useful and easy to see, it’s ugly. And as long as Mazda adapted the corporate infotainment system into the Miata, why not the HID screen as well? There’s still no option for the limited slip differential on a Miata with automatic either. Might as well add the other big complaint, the lack of bright paint colors, how many shades of white & grey do we need? Enough complaints, back to the good stuff, the top is really well done, I thought that it'd be hard to improve on the NC top, but this top is so easy to put up that only a power button would make it easier. The trunk space looks almost comparable to the NC, even though it’s actually down from 5.3 Cu. Ft. to 4.6 Cu. Ft. As for me, I'll be in the market in a couple of years, maybe Mazda will have some sharper colors or special editions that will make it worth while getting one sooner. Otherwise I’m good with the old NC. To sum up my test ride in one simple statement; it's nice to know that Mazda still understands what a Miata is supposed to be.

    The Garage… It’s all Fun! Page 13

Bob Maurer was in the garage, he determined that his NC needed a more appropriate “sports car sound”, so an AEM cold air intake system was installed. Installing this intake necessitates the removal of the front bumper cover, which in turn means removing several gazillion screws & plastic fasteners. But the job is really pretty straight forward, it’s just time consuming with those several gazillion fasteners. Really, there must be several gazillion fasteners. Step one is to remove the entire front bumper cover, as Bob has done in the first picture, then the factory air-box must be removed as well. See the second picture for the empty hole where the air-box used to live. The dull silver gizmo with the wires plugged into it is the ECU. Reassembly starts with covering the ECU that lives in the space that was previously under the air-box, with an ABS cover and then fitting the tubing for the cold air intake. Lastly, reinstall the front bumper cover and enjoy the new cold air intake system.

Nice work, Bob! Next up will be a Goodwin Racing muffler and anti-sway bars, look for this in next month’s The Garage . Did I hear mention of tires (215/45 x 17Michelin Pilot Super Sports) & wheels too Bob? It’s only a matter of time until Bob’s into replacing the shocks & springs. The motto in The Garage is; “It’s all fun!”.
