WELCOME TO THE UNIVERSITY OF EXETER

1

I’m delighted that you have chosen to study with us, and congratulations on getting a place! This is a very exciting time to be at the University of Exeter, especially as we start a year of celebration to mark our Diamond

Jubilee. For the first time this year we have been ranked in the top 10 of all three major UK higher education league tables at the same time. Our research reputation continues to grow, with an excellent result at the 2014 Research Excellence Framework and in the latest Leiden Rankings, where we are rated 6th in the UK, 8th in Europe, and 34th in the world for our scientific impact and collaboration. All this further secures our place at the very top table of UK universities, which means that you have worked very hard to earn a place here, so well done!

I appreciate that there is a lot for you to take in when you first arrive at university, which is why we set aside this first week entirely for new students. I hope you find this time useful for understanding how your programme of study works, exploring the campus and the local area, and getting to know new friends.

Our campuses are truly wonderful places to live and study, with some of the best facilities and support of any university in the UK, and they provide a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, innovative programmes and a great student experience. And remember, our experienced staff and dedicated student Welcome Team are on hand throughout the week to help you settle in to university life.

For new undergraduates, a key date for your calendar is Grand Challenges. Grand Challenges is the summer showpiece conclusion to your first year. It’s a unique chance to collaborate with top academics and industry experts in finding solutions to the world’s problems, and will hone the skills you’ve developed during the year as well as introducing you to many more.

On behalf of all my colleagues I hope that you will have a truly wonderful time here. We look forward to supporting you to achieve the highest academic standards in your chosen programme, and your hopes and aspirations for the future.

Freshers’ Week is our induction week and is open to everyone at every level of study who is ‘fresh’ to their programme. It’s a great opportunity for you to find out your course details and meet the people on your programme during Academic Induction, settle in to university life before term begins, make yourself at home in your accommodation, meet new friends and explore your surroundings. Throughout Freshers’ Week all the University staff and Students’ Guild Welcome Team volunteers are here to help you.

SETTLING INYou’re probably fed up with everyone telling you that university was the best time of their lives. Yes, it can be great but the first few days and weeks can be a rollercoaster of emotions. You arrive with a suitcase full of stuff and a head full of expectations. You’re surrounded by new people who are all trying to make an impression. It may look as if everybody else knows what they’re doing, but many don’t.

If you are thriving in this environment then that’s fantastic. But if you’re not, please don’t worry; you’re not alone. You don’t have to make all your new friends in the first few days. You don’t need to have all your timetable and classes sorted out straight away, and you

definitely don’t have to know everything by the end of Freshers’ Week. Transition can take time and it isn’t a process you can rush.

It’s important to us that you feel settled and secure throughout your time studying with us. However, there are some things you must do as a new student. If you feel overwhelmed in the first few days, then concentrate on getting these things done, and the rest can wait:

Start with your core Academic Induction timetable and work from there

Read your Welcome Pack guides

Key administrative tasks are listed inside the back cover

THE STUDENTS’ GUILD WELCOME TEAMThe Students’ Guild Welcome Team volunteers are on hand throughout Freshers’ Week to ensure you have a safe, enjoyable and productive time. You can’t miss them in their bright pink t-shirts! They’ve been hand-selected from our students, and it’s their job to help you in whatever way they can. There are also plenty of support services to help you. You can access these via email, our website, personal appointments, or come and meet them at the ‘How to’ days during Freshers’ Week (see page 6). They are also listed in the student services directory on page 18-20.

IEXETER If you have a smartphone you can download our free University of Exeter app, iExeter, which is available from the App Store and Google Play. iExeter is your mobile guide to Freshers’ Week; you can search by day and by campus for activities. Keep it on your smartphone for access to your email and timetable, as well as information about the library, free study spaces, and personalised course materials.

GETTING INVOLVEDParticipating in activities on campus is a great way of meeting people, making friends, building networks, and maybe even adding experiences

and responsibility to your CV. There are a huge number of events taking place across the university during Freshers’ Week, organised by the 170 clubs and societies and the 49 sports clubs. Each society has at least one activity planned, many of which are free taster sessions.

All societies charge varying membership fees, so why not try a free activity before you join? You can join a student society online at any point in the year by visiting the societies page on the Guild’s website: www.exeterguild.com/societies

You can read more about our arts and culture and sport provision later in this guide.

YOUR FIRST FEW DAYS

SUPPORTING YOU AT EXETER

HOW TO…?To help you adapt to university life more easily, we have organised three ’How to...?’ Information Fairs during Freshers’ Week. These will take place in the Forum on the Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:00 to 16:00. Each day has a different theme; make sure you come along each day so you don’t miss anything important. Even if you don’t think you need them now it’s worthwhile coming along anyway; you’ll probably pick up a few free goodies and learn something interesting too!

MONDAY: HOW TO SETTLE IN Monday is all about the support, advice and help available at the University; from assistance adjusting to living in halls to getting your valuables security marked. You can meet the Chaplains in their Freshers’ Week sitting room or speak to our AccessAbility team and see what they can offer, including assistive IT and dyslexia awareness.

WEDNESDAY: HOW TO LIVE WELL Wednesday in the Forum is about health and wellbeing, with cooking tips, fitness classes, complimentary health sessions, hints about foods to boost your brain power, information for cyclists, creativity sessions, and the chance to cycle your way to a free smoothie.

FRIDAY: HOW TO STUDY SMARTER Friday introduces you to all the resources that can help you make the most of your academic life, including IT facilities, the Student Engagement Team, Foreign Language Centre, English language support for international students, and volunteering opportunities, and lots of free stuff.

A full list of who can help can be found at the back of this booklet. Here are some main support services.

Student Information Desk (SID)

This is your first point of contact for central support services dealing with a range of issues including finance, emotional wellbeing, disability, accommodation, and international student support. Based in the Forum and at St Luke’s, SID is open six days a week during term time.

Your College Colleges support your learning whilst at Exeter. College teams include a Dean/Head of School, support offices, academics, Personal Tutors and Student/Staff Liaison Committees to ensure your views are represented.

Accommodation Please speak to our Accommodation Office about any issues with your university accommodation allocation, or to the Residence staff about any practical issue with your room. You will have a Residence Life Mentor allocated to you throughout your stay. If you are living in non-University accommodation our Community Wardens are there to support you.

Studying abroad can be as challenging as it is exciting. We have designed the International Student Welcome Programme to ensure that you are given all the support and advice you need to settle in at Exeter. You can ask any questions at the International Student Drop In, based in Forum seminar room 4, from Monday – Thursday (16:00-18:00). We encourage you to participate fully in all Freshers’ Week activities. This will help you learn about Exeter life during your first week.

We also recommend you request a Global Chum mentor to answer your questions and introduce you to Exeter life after Freshers’ Week. If you haven’t requested one already please go to the Global Chums stand at the Activities Fair on Saturday 20 September.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT CLEARANCEYour Welcome email from Admissions will state whether you need to present original documentation to the University prior to completing online registration. Details of International Student Clearance can be found at the front of the Freshers’ Week Events Guide.

ERASMUS, EXCHANGE AND STUDY ABROAD STUDENTSYou may have paperwork from your home university that needs to be signed. Please leave this with the International Student Clearance team in the Forum during Freshers’ Week.

More detailed information on the following can be found at www.exeter.ac.uk/internationalstudents/prearrival

You will receive a monthly e-newsletter called ‘Your International News’. Please read it thoroughly for updates and news relevant to non-UK students. There are lots of opportunities for you to get involved and meet people at Exeter as well as our exciting cultural programme on campus.

EDUCATION AT EXETER

GRAND CHALLENGESGrand Challenges is an annual programme, unique to Exeter, in which undergraduate students work together in interdisciplinary research groups, alongside some of our top academics, to address some of the greatest challenges of the 21st century. From mental health to population pressures, sustainable tourism to global security – and many more – which Challenge will you choose?

You don’t need to have knowledge of these subjects beforehand. Grand Challenges is a great opportunity to pick a subject outside of your area of study and add a new dimension to your learning experience. Your contribution to the programme will be recognised on your degree transcript, you’ll receive a certificate of participation and depending on your course you may even have the option to take Grand Challenges as a credit-bearing module.

This is your chance to broaden your intellectual horizons whilst meeting new people from across the University, improving your employability skills, as well as accessing the vast range of resources available at Exeter. Each Challenge is led by an academic who specialises in the Challenge subject, and staff are committed to sharing their knowledge and expertise to support your research.

Grand Challenges offers a fun and inspiring experience. Previously students have created apps, built robots, performed plays, run social media campaigns, lobbied politicians and gone on to work with the Guild and University to implement real change. Grand Challenges 2016: What impact will you have?

Grand Challenges helps you engage with the real world, doing something meaningful that you can be proud of. Yes, I was part of that and it was amazing! GRAND CHALLENGES PARTICIPANT

The University of Exeter is home to some of the best sports facilities in the South West. In excess of £20 million has been invested in our sporting provision at the Sports Park and St Luke’s Sports Centre, to provide opportunities for all students to participate in sport and other recreational activities.

Facilities across both of our Exeter campuses include gyms, exercise studios, the Devon Cricket Centre, Exeter Tennis Centre, squash courts, sports halls, all-weather astro-pitches, grass pitches, a short-game golf area, and indoor and outdoor swimming pools.

Over the last 2 years the Sports Park on Streatham Campus has dramatically expanded following the construction of the Russell Seal Fitness Centre. The fully equipped 200-station facility is at the zenith of health and fitness technology, providing one of the best gym spaces in the country.

FACILITIES Our facilities are available for all students to use on a casual basis, with personal training and coaching also available for those who want to develop and learn under the guidance of an expert coach.

STUDENT SPORT Exeter has an outstanding reputation for sport across the board, finishing 6th in the 2014/2015 British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) national rankings. The Athletic Union oversees and manages the running of our 49 student sports, each of which are open for any student to join.

The Athletic Union handbook in your welcome pack provides information about each of these clubs and their training times.

Intramural Sport (or IMS) also provides recreational leagues in a variety of sports designed to encourage participation and is open to all students with teams usually representing halls, subject groups, societies or groups of friends. Different leagues run every term and can include football, touch-rugby, rounders, hockey, netball, and more, allowing total beginners the chance to compete in friendly competition.

COACHINGOur coach education programme continues to expand year on year, offering a variety of key vocational courses that can increase employability within the sports industry.

Every year we work with national governing bodies of sport to create 100s of qualified student coaches, instructors and lifeguards, introducing new coaching courses at the request of students and clubs.

The acclaimed Sports Volunteering Scheme also works with local schools and clubs to give students a chance to gain “on the job” experience of coaching in after school clubs and PE lessons, whilst earning discounts off their next qualification.

WELLBEING Student wellbeing is at the heart of the University of Exeter’s ethos. Our GP referral programme provides free personal training and facility access to students with special

physical and mental health needs. We continue to develop our wellness and Healthy Halls schemes to provide free activities to students, including yoga, Pilates, running and walking groups on a weekly basis, whilst working with the International Office, Wellbeing Centre and Health Service to create new ways to promote physical and mental health.

For further information on any aspect of sport at the University of Exeter, please visit our website www.exeter.ac.uk/sport email [email protected], or call 01392 724452.
