A bumper entry of nearly 100 head saw prime cattle continue to rise in price with a very decent top of 219ppk given for a
superb 580kg Limousin heifer (24m) from David & Stewart Chapple of Cadeleigh with their slightly older (26m) 640kg
Charolais bred heifer easing to 217ppk and realising a massive £1385. Bottor Rock Farms Hennock chipped in with a smart
550kg Blonde steer (23m) making 215ppk and a super Bazadaise heifer (22m) that reached 209ppk and at 614kg realised

which reached to 214ppk and £1157. A strong 624kg British Blue steer from Roger Adams, Cullompton returned 211ppk
and £1313 with the best from Keith & Hilary Harvey of Bovey Tracey running to 210ppk for a neat 560kg Blonde heifer
(26m). A decent run of well finished cattle from Graham Tancock, Broadclyst peeked at 199ppk and £1258 for a 630kg
Hereford steer whilst Reg Wills of Ashburton saw his best of a cracking run of ten Angus bred heifers (24m) reach 195ppk

bodied 720kg Angus barrener making 140ppk for John Smith of Budleigh Salterton. Bottor Rock Farms saw a smart
Bazadaise cow fetch 139ppk whilst Herefords rose to 126ppk for Charles Ellis of Roborough, Plymouth. Best cull bulls sold

95 PRIME CATTLE & BARREN COWS – 10.45AM
Auctioneer: Simon Alford 07789 980203
Spring Lambs to £133.50 & 249ppk Prime Hoggs to £109 & 210ppk Cull Ewes to £118 & Rams to £109.50
A very similar number of 2084 prime spring lambs were as expected less
money, but not as far back as feared with the best lambs least affected
and holding their own with a tremendous single 63kg Charollais from
BG & JZA Dart of Clyst Hydon topping the sale at £133.50 whilst their
50kgs of the same breed were £120.50 and other single overweights sold
to £125 for Phillip Rowell of Crockernwell and £117 for Alan Weymouth
of Salcombe. More 48-50kg lambs selling to £112.80 & £112.50 for
Ellen Yandle of Mamhead, £112.50 also for Trevor Selway of Weston
Cross, £110.20 for the Coaker family of Widecombe and £110 for John
Southwood of Copplestone. Smart 47kgs realised £110 for Pauline
Scanes of Cheriton Bishop as 46kgs sold to £108 for John Simmons of
Poltimore and £107 for Alan & Gerry Luscombe of Bickington. FH
Chave of Sampford Arundel sold a smart pen of 45kg pure Texel lambs
at £111.50 (248ppk) with the next best of this weight reaching £109 for
Ellen Yandle and 44kgs to £106.50 for Jerry Sanders Carr of Exminster
with plenty of 44-45kgs returning £103 to £105. Best of the 43kgs to
£102.20 for MA May & Son of Copplestone as 42kgs sold to £98.80 for
both David & Mary Stark of Denbury and Ken & Joyce Pleace of Clyst
Hydon whilst the top price pen of 41kgs also climbed to £98.80 for Tom
Yandle of Mamhead. A super pen of young sappy lambs from Jamie
Acton of Cheriton Fitzpaine took the top slot pence per kilo at 249ppk,
when his 39kgs rose to £97.20. More 39kgs at £89.50 for Edward Pring
of Broadclyst and £89 for both J & C Shelley of Shobrooke and Vivian O’Sullivan of Hittisleigh as 38kgs sold to £90 for
Barry Mildon & family of Cadbury and £89.80 again for Ellen Yandle and a smart pen of 37kg plums from Steve Hyde of
Calverleigh reached £89. Still a fair percentage of lean, un-fed lambs coming in and finding new homes for finishing around
the £2/kg mark, and these aren’t just light weights, all of which would be better sold as stores. Similarly stale lambs (some
born before Christmas) are meeting more resistance from buyers and would be better sold as stores. SQQ was 17p less at
223ppk.
147 Hoggs and 11 mature sheep were met with limited demand with noticeably fewer active buyers, for all but a few best
pens. Top of £109 for Charollais from Chris Hayter of Haccombe which at 52kgs also took the top spot per kilo at 210ppk
and Chris also topped the mature sheep section reaching £94. Similar weight hoggs to £92.50 for David Helmer of
Loddiswell and £90 for FH Chave whilst lighter 47kg hoggs realised £92.50 for Phil Coaker of Postbridge. 42kgs to £75 for
Mick Branton of Dunsford and others generally £60 to £75 depending on quality.
A much larger offering of 932 cull sheep were a similar story with the best pure bred lean ewes over the £100 mark selling
to a top of £118 for eight Charollais from Robert Hopper and family of Tiverton who also had Suffolks at £110. Andrew
Hodgson of Cullompton saw his best continental ewes make £108, Robin Irwin of Kingsnympton sold four Suffolks at £101.
Crossbred ewes were headed by a great run from Jeff Brewer of Padstow who had pens of Suffolk cross ewes to £95, £94.50,
£89.50 (x3) and £85.50 (x2) as other Texel type ewes sold at £94 for Vivian O’Sullivan and £90.50 for RJ Northcott of
Callington. Best of the Dorset ewes trading into the early £80’s but plenty from £60 to £70 and Mules often £55 to £65
depending on weight and cover. Hill ewes to £52 for strong Scotch ewes from Brian Vallance and family of Bickington and
cull rams were headed by a trio from Malcolm & Kaye Pring of Broadclyst realising £109.50. Overall average of £68 is up
£2 on the week.

Suffolk selling at £99 followed by AJ Carter with a Texel at £92.50 and B Moseley of Hittisleigh realised £89. All cull
sheep averaged £62, which is up £10 on the week, half of the lift is due to quality, the other half is the strength of
trade.
