We are strongly encouraging all vendors to “drop & go”. Stock can be sold on “owner’s approval” please

ensure your contact details are on the entry form.

If in extreme cases (chiefly breeding stock) vendors feel strongly about staying to see their stock sold, only

one person from a business may stay and they must leave as soon as their stock has been sold.

Everybody must enter via the main entrance and ensure they are wearing face coverings and have sanitised

their hands.

We ask all people on site to adhere to strict social distancing measures reverting back to the 2m rule with

a face covering.

No social visits can be permitted. Active buyers and sellers only, with just one representative per business

allowed. No children allowed.

Monday 1st February

Prime Cattle to 220ppk and £1567 Barren Cows to 150ppk and £1370

Several more cattle forward this week and although demand was no stronger than we have seen of late the right goods

did see a premium. Prime cattle sold to a high of 220ppk for a smart 660kg Limousin heifer from Bottor Rock Farms,

Hennock which realised £1448 followed by their 648kg Blonde heifer which drew 213ppk and £1377. Top price realised

was a whopping £1567 (778kg x 202ppk) given for a grand British Blue steer from Keith and Hilary Harvey of Bovey Tracey

who also saw their 630kg Blue heifer to 212ppk and £1332. The better of couple of well finished South Devon steers from

Steve Harris of Littlehempston grossed a decent £1445 (680kg x 213ppk) whilst Adrian Bowden, Drewsteignton sold his

614kg British Blue heifer for 208ppk and £1274, also Graham Tancock of Broadclyst saw a 698kg Charolais steer reach

206ppk and £1434. South Devon heifers saw 201ppk for Steve and Basil Cane of Plymouth and Devon steers ran to 189ppk

and £1184 for Adrian Pike of Nymet Rowland also the best of a good run of Hereford finished sorts from Bowden Farms

of Tedburn St Mary saw 194ppk and £1201 for steers and 187ppk and £1122 for heifers. Over thirty month prime topped

at £1243 (674 x 185ppk) for John Carden of Payhembury. Not the quality entry of barren cows as seen other the last few

weeks although they did top at a creditable 150ppk for a 748kg Devon from Stephen Slade of Aylesbeare which levelled

out at £1118. Limousin cows sold to 127ppk for Tony Butt of West Alvington and South Devon’s fetched 118ppk and

£900 for Les Glanville, Northleigh who also sold a massive 1166kg South Devon cull bull for 118ppk and £1370. Dairy bred barreners worked their way up to 125ppk for a Friesian from Steve Loud of Farway which at 678kg realised £844.

Spring Lambs to £134 & 323 ppk Prime Hoggs to £138 & 295 ppk Cull Ewes to £138 & Rams to £130

Such a large number the week before our opening sale were penned separate and sold in front of the hoggs which got the

prime market off to a flying start. Fresh buyers in attendance seeking new season lambs as well as the strong contingent

of local butchers and wholesalers created a liveweight trade that would equate to a price deadweight closer to £7/kg than

£6. A very strong trade ahead of both buyers and sellers expectations levelled at 304ppk or £124.82 per head overall. Top

money at £134 went to the Pritchard Family of Dartmouth with 45kgs (298ppk) followed closely by James Westcott and

Family of Cullompton with their superb run of Charollais x Dorset lambs seeing 43kgs at £133.50 (310ppk) as well as

44kgs at £133 (302ppk) and lighter lambs at 41kgs from the same good home realised £129.50 (316ppk) and their 42kgs

£128 (305ppk). The Pritchard Family also took top honours in the pence per kilo with 40kgs at 318ppk (£127) and young,

plummy 39kgs at 323ppk (£126). Eric Dennis of North Tawton returned £125.50 of his 41kg lambs as the Daw Family of

Morchard Bishop sold similar at £122, May Priorton of East Village had the only heavier lamb being an inside fed 47kg

Dorset at £124 and Graham Hill of Wiggaton sold young fresh pure Dorset’s weighing 34kgs and making £90. SQQ of 304ppk, some 42p better on the week and 77p in front of the equivalent date last year.

As expected the strong trade continued into the 641 hoggs that were

forward with the best looking almost just as dear as the lambs whilst

some leaner and lighter sorts distort the averages. Rich Berry of Kenn

topped the sale at £138 followed closely by both A Bond of Axminster

and David Pratt & Family of Huntsham at £137.50, Tony Butt of West

Alvington at £135, Arthur Salter of Broadclyst at £133.50, Alan Bickley

of Puddington at £131 and Charlie O’Brien of Exeter at £130, all with

overweights. Remainder of overweights from £120 to £130 with the

exception of a few rare breeds to average £125.63. 46 & 48kg hoggs

to £129 & £128 again for David Pratt with 50kg hoggs at £128 also for

Eric Gillbard of Thorverton and The Rolle Texel flock of Sidmouth

and the same price was achieved by Robert Hopper of Cove with

smart 47kg hoggs. Others in this weight range usually £120 to £127.50

to level at £124.40 overall. A super pen of 43kg Beltex sired hoggs

sold to £127 or a sale topping 295ppk for the Baxter family of Exwick

who also had 41kgs at £120.50 (294ppk) and other 43kgs sold to £123

for two vendors and lighter 41kg hoggs sold to £119 and 290ppk for

Andy O’Brien of Exeter. Lighter hoggs as is often the case included a

large proportion of hill bred sorts with these fed sorts selling well.

39kgs to £102 for better bred sorts from Paul West of Holbeton and

38kg similar bred sorts at £100 for Becky Moody of Exeter as 38kg

Dalesbred’s claimed £100 for Rushlade Wool Co. of Ashburton and

36kg Texel x Herdwicks from Evie Edworthy of Buckland in the Moor

also achieved £100 (278ppk). 37kg Scotch tup and wether hoggs to

£92 for Peter Heard of Okehampton and similar 35kg sorts from the

Abel family of Tavistock reached £89.50 and both vendors sold 32kg hillbreds at £75.50 and Abels had another pen at £77.

Heavier hill bred hoggs saw 47kg Mules from Jim Goodenough of Davidstowe command £121.80 and Peter Heard’s 45kg Scotch tups climbed to £109.50. Hogg SQQ was 267ppk up 34p on the week.

Another quiet Monday in the sheep pens with 691 prime lambs selling at recent levels with a top of £86 for Texel x

50kg lambs from David Goss of Littlehempston who also had 51kg Charollais at £83.50 and smart 47kg continentals at

£83 (177ppk). Overweights to £85 for AJ Carter of Dawlish and £81.50 for Paul West of Holbeton. Other 50-52kg

lambs selling at £85 for Tripp Bros & Sons of Dunsford £84.20 for Tony Pickard of South Molton, £82.80 for Ken

Chapple of Oakford and £82.50 for RD Middleton & Son of Ashreigney. A trio of smart 47kg Beltex crosses from

Tracey Pike of Luppit sold at £82.50 (176ppk). 45kg Charollais lambs to £77 for Len Sharland of Tiverton and the same

price per head for 44kgs from Keith Milton of Pennymoor who also claimed top price per kilo when his two pens of

smart 41kg lambs rose to 180 & 178ppk or £73.80 & £72.80 respectively. A great line up of well finished light lambs

from 28 to 39kgs saw top per head of £66 achieved by both Blackaton Manor Farms of Widecombe with 39kg

Cheviots and also of 38kg Suffolk crosses from Abel Bros of Tavistock who also parted with 33kg Welsh lambs at

£56.20, 31kg hill lambs at £54, 30kgs at £53.20 (177ppk) and a large pen of 28kg Scotties at £48.20. Overall average is

just a penny better at 170ppk.

A short entry of just under 400 cull sheep sold with a better feel to the trade as mule and other medium weight ewes

were noticeably dearer than seen in a long time. Best crossbred ewes to £90 for a pair of Black Texels from Tracey

Pike of Luppit, £89.50, £88.50 & £86 for penfuls of strong Suffolk crosses from Tom Yandle of Mamhead and £87 for

similar from Tim Whitley of Widecombe. Others £75 to £84 depending on breed, condition and weight. Best mules as

mentioned looking £6-£9 dearer on the week with two pens selling at £77.50 & £74.50 for Brad Simmons of

Thorndon Cross, £76.50 for Ellen Yandle of Mamhead and a meated run from Sam Ursell of Tedburn St Mary sold to

£76, £74.50, £73 & £72.50. Hill ewes fewer in number and often £30 to £40 with no real strength present and very

few lots sold under £25. Rams a touch stronger trade too with Brad Simmons also topping these with a weighty

Suffolk selling at £99 followed by AJ Carter with a Texel at £92.50 and B Moseley of Hittisleigh realised £89. All cull

sheep averaged £62, which is up £10 on the week, half of the lift is due to quality, the other half is the strength of

trade.

829 Cull sheep were a similar trade overall although the best ewes would be back slightly on the week but leaner and

lighter ewes would be dearer. Best at £138 & £134 for pure Texel’s from Anthony Carter of Dawlish who also had a

Rouge at £116, £132 for Rich Berry of Kenn and £125 for a pen of Texel crosses from Geoff Tripp of East Prawle who

had another at £120 and further pen at £119. Suffolk cross Mules to £120.50, £119 & £116.50 for Patrick Toop & family

of Yelverton and £120 for Andy O’Brien as David & Richard Rossiter of Galmpton sold Suffolks at £119, a price matched

by Roy Endacott of Spreyton with Charollais. Plenty of heavy crossbred ewes and leaner meated ewes from £100 to £118

and heavyweight Mules and Mahams just back slightly with the best around the £90 mark but leaner sorts well sold in the

£80’s. More hill ewes forward and the April lambing flocks complete their scanning and these meeting a fierce and improved

trade with a run of well farmed Scotch ewes from Richard Darke and Family of Chillington selling to £78, £77 & £70 whilst

David & Justine Colton of Princetown sold Swales to £66. Best of the rams to £130, £114 & £110 again for Rich Berry

with CB Partners of Chevithorne selling a pair at £120 and MP Cleverdon of Black Dog sold four at £115. Overall average of £85 is back just over a pound.

RURAL REFLECTION JANUARY 2021

Here we go! 2020 has passed and we look forward to a brighter and less restricted 2021. I appreciate January will be extremely difficult for many but there is plenty to be positive about going forward. Finally the UK has struck a deal with Europe in which praise has to be given to our Prime Minster. From what I hear and understand the deal is progressive for the UK and importantly for our farmers we can continue to trade with Europe without any export tariffs. This coupled with the additional cheaper and less complicated Covid-19 Vaccine which begins its role out today, is a huge mile stone in the fight against Covid-19. Let’s hope that by Easter we will be back to some normality.

With regards to professional matters a large proportion of Basic Payment Scheme claimants should now have received their Basic Payment Scheme payments. As always please please please, check these amounts. Look in detail at the Claim Statement that arrived in the post and compare the figures on the Claim Statement to the Basic Payment Scheme Application you submitted back in the Spring. If you have any queries, give your Kivells office a call and we can input the data and confirm your payments are correct. If indeed they are incorrect a payment query form needs to be submitted to the RPA as soon as possible.

Staying with the Basic Payment and as Claire Quick mentioned in our December Rural Reflection we are about to see significant changes with the Basic Payment Scheme. The final payment year is to be 2027, with reductions starting in 2021. The table below sets out the cuts for the next four scheme years (see below).

Going forward the Agricultural Bill sees the phasing out of the Basic Payment Scheme, Delink of Direct Payments (BPS) and the introduction of the New Environmental Management Scheme. DEFRA have outlined the key changes with the main aspects being;

Payments to be delinked from land in 2024.

Possible exit scheme with lump sum payments equivalent to remaining BPS payments to farmers who leave the sector.

Cross compliance to remain until 2024, when it will then be replaced.

Alterations to the inspections regime including ‘greater communication rather than instant penalties’.

Money taken away from BPS to be reinvested in other schemes for farmers

On other matters, the Mid-Tier Countryside Stewardship continues to prove to be a positive scheme. Businesses throughout the South West have come to the conclusion that the Mid-Tier Countryside Stewardship allows for additional income relating to land parcel options, with the other significant benefit being the vast amount of capital works available (in many cases being livestock fencing).

It is worth mentioning that the Countryside Stewardship Scheme will continue to be available with the last new applications being accepted in 2023. Anyone that has a Countryside Stewardship Agreement that starts after January 2021, who gets offered a new Environmental Land Management Scheme, will be able to withdraw and transfer to the new scheme with no penalty. Therefore anyone considering applying for a new Countryside Stewardship agreement in 2021, it is worth looking to see what options are out there. I hasten to add as a firm we have put together some wonderful Countryside Stewardship agreements that have provided significant additional incomes but also large capital investment that has improved farm infrastructure considerably.

2020 saw a massive year for Kivells and the farm and land market with 2020 proving one of our best years (for transactional activity) in a decade both in terms of farms launched and farms sold. Going forward 2021 in shaping up to follow suit with a

number of farms scheduled to hit the open market. With continued outside investment and a great serge for property in the West Country we remain confident that the land and farms market remains buoyant for 2021. Utility companies remain busy with various ongoing projects throughout the South West which often means land and farming businesses witnessing damages to land. Although not advised by the incoming utility company, we as agents are here to ensure you are fairly compensated for all costs created from the required works. Whether it’s a cost for the loss of Winter Wheat in the ground or your time spent on the phone dealing with problems which has arisen from the works whereby quite frankly you have other, more important matters that require your attention. The incoming utilities are often of the opinion a few grass seeds will put matters right. When you sit down and work out the costs it is often well in excess. Please get in contact with us if you have a utility company ‘Knocking on the door’ looking to enter your property. Negotiations and your concerns need to be ironed out from day one.
