Foreword

Dear Colleague,

I am delighted to be able to offer you, your staff and governors or directors this Continuing Professional Development Prospectus for 2017-18. The financial challenges facing schools (and the Diocese) require us to ensure that we provide what you need at a price that represents excellent value for money. You have our commitment that we will do all we can to support and add value to your school or academy in order to achieve outstanding leadership and Christian distinctiveness.

We can offer genuine expertise in a number of areas including: RE teaching and leadership; Collective Worship; prayer spaces; SIAMS preparation (including self-assessment, mid-cycle reviews and the governance oversight of the Ethos committee); British values; character education and the PREVENT agenda in a Christian context; parishes and schools working together; admissions and our comprehensive governor training programme.

I remain very positive about the opportunities that are emerging for the Exeter Diocesan Education Team. Our priorities for the future include developing support for principled Christian Leadership in partnership with the newly created Leadership Foundation. Exeter has joined with Truro and Bath and Wells dioceses to form a regional pilot that will give you unique regional opportunities to enrich your school improvement capability. The importance placed by the DfE on ensuring all schools teach Christianity effectively will be delivered through our Understanding Christianity resource pack training. Church of England Schools will be able to support the whole system in addressing this well documented national shortcoming.

We are always keen to receive suggestions for new areas of focus and would encourage you to email these in. I am extremely keen to work in collaboration to ensure that we avoid unnecessary duplication and wasted efforts and look to continue to develop our formal partnerships with Teaching Schools, Local Authorities, MATs and Higher Education Institutions so that we can collectively serve you better.

The Church of England Professional Qualification for Headship (CofEPQH) - South West Cohort

This course provides a unique opportunity for professional, spiritual and personal development. The programme aims to equip current and aspiring leaders to meet the challenges of leading school communities effectively, and has been recognised as a National Professional Qualification (NPQ) by the Department for Education.

The programme is open to current headteachers (including Heads of School), senior school leaders and aspiring headteachers.

The Foundation will be delivering the CofEPQH in the South West from January 2018.

The Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS) is a significant way in which Church schools are judged. Develop their own thinking and understanding with regard to Christianity

Create powerful, well-resourced, connected learning programmes to teach Christianity

Enable their pupils to explore the theological concepts within Christianity

This day will give RE teachers and subject leaders an opportunity to share perspectives on the current syllabus requirements as we begin the process of review: we will want to explore what is valued and make note of where development is needed. We will then examine some new syllabus models, to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of different systems, with a view to making recommendations to Exeter Diocese and Devon, Torbay and Plymouth SACREs.

Course title: Philosophy for Children (P4C) in primary school

Philosophy for children is a powerful educational approach that has been found to be highly effective in the dual aims of raising attainment and improving childrens enjoyment of learning. In this practical, hands-on course we will be exploring some of the central aims and methods of P4C and discussing how its techniques can be embedded into learning settings across the curriculum.

Course Title: Inclusive Spiritual Development

Course description:

This course will help teachers to identify more clearly what is meant by spirituality and spiritual development, making links with inspiration, creativity and relational awareness and reflecting on its connection with religious belief. Through use of practical examples, there will be a discussion of how spirituality can be identified in all areas of the curriculum, through use of audit tools and planning grids. Consideration will be given to the way in which schools can enable staff to plan for the inclusive spiritual development of all children.

Intended outcomes:

To develop a shared understanding of spirituality and spiritual development

To consider the interaction between religion, religious beliefs and spirituality

To explore what is meant by learning from religion and to consider the role of mindfulness in schools

To explore possible routes towards pupils spiritual development through collective worship, RE and other curriculum areas

To explore the use of spiritual development planning grids

To develop a policy on inclusive spiritual development, emphasising the way in which this should impact on all staff and all children

Please ensure we are aware of any special requirements you may need on the day e.g. specific dietary requests, disabled access, etc., and we will do our best to ensure all your needs are met.

Once you have submitted your booking form, we will e-mail you confirmation that you are accepted on to the course of your choice (unless the course is fully booked). Please note the Events Administrator is a part-time post, term time only, so you may experience a short delay before receiving a response.

A reminder will be emailed approximately one week before the course, together with any other relevant information.

PAYMENT

Invoices for Course fees are issued from a week prior to the event.

CANCELLATIONS

1.

While we understand that delegates sometimes have to withdraw at a late stage, we would be grateful if those who have to cancel would inform us immediately if they cannot attend.

We regret that when such late cancellations occur, it may be necessary to make an administration charge and recoup any costs incurred as part of a cancellation fee (this will depend on the nature of the course and the costs incurred). A cancellation fee of 100% will be made if cancelling within one week of an event, subject to the terms and conditions of the venue.

Most courses will have a minimum number of participants required to make the course viable, therefore bookings will close 7 days prior in order for a weeks notice to be given in the event of cancellation.

REFRESHMENTS

The Course fees include refreshments on arrival and at any breaks. Where stated, lunch will be provided, usually as a sandwich buffet selection.

Leadership Programme

In partnership with St Christophers Multi Academy Trust, we are putting together a rich and varied programme of leadership learning for the coming year, built around the Church of Englands Vision for Education (2016) and wider leadership theory. These are challenging times for all school leaders, and we encourage colleagues to join us at these events.

Once you have submitted your booking form, we will e-mail you confirmation that you are accepted on to the course of your choice (unless the course is fully booked). Please note the Events Administrator is a part-time post, term time only, so you may experience a short delay before receiving a response.

A reminder will be emailed approximately one week before the course, together with any other relevant information.

PAYMENT

Invoices for Course fees are issued from a week prior to the event.

CANCELLATIONS

1.

While we understand that delegates sometimes have to withdraw at a late stage, we would be grateful if those who have to cancel would inform us immediately if they cannot attend.

We regret that when such late cancellations occur, it may be necessary to make an administration charge and recoup any costs incurred as part of a cancellation fee (this will depend on the nature of the course and the costs incurred). A cancellation fee of 100% will be made if cancelling within one week of an event, subject to the terms and conditions of the venue.

Most courses will have a minimum number of participants required to make the course viable, therefore bookings will close 7 days prior in order for a weeks notice to be given in the event of cancellation.

REFRESHMENTS

1.

The Course fees include refreshments on arrival and at any breaks. Where stated, lunch will be provided, usually as a sandwich buffet selection.
