Objective: Create an accurate, realistic self-portrait from a photograph using a grid, shape-to-form, and shading.
Process:•During the first week of school, students created a pre-assessment drawing of themselves with no assistance from the teacher•Students learned the proportions of the human face and how to draw the individual features using shape-to-form, teacher modeled.•Students composed ‘selfies’ for their self-portrait.•Students drew grids on their photograph and their drawing paper. They drew their portrait square by square while also using shape to form on the facial features.•Students shaded their portraits using pencil and created a colorful or creative background. Exemplar
The artifact represents the PERFORM domain because the focus of the lesson was on drawing techniques and processes, the use of a medium, and the structure and proportion of the face.
Student growth is shown from the pre-assessment self-portrait to the post-assessment ‘selfie’ drawing from a photograph of themselves. A formative assessment drawing of the proportion of the face is in between.
Time frame: Pre-Assessment done Aug 2016, self-portrait done in January 2017. The self-portraits took about 3-4 weeks to complete
Work is from a year-long beginner exploratory 6th grade class.Exemplar
Emerging
The emerging student grew significantly in their ability to draw a face in proportion. The shading applied to the face is still at a beginner level.

Proficient
The Proficient student grew significantly in their ability to draw the face in proportion and realistically. The use of value on the post-assessment adds to the realism.
