What is ExecutiveEdge? This is IBM’s exclusive two-day summit for IT executives and leaders, featuring technology announcements, customer success stories, and presentations by industry leaders and IBM executives. The starring roles went to breakthrough innovations from IBM Power Systems, IBM System Storage, IBM z Systems, and IBM Middleware.

Session:

ExecutiveEdge Storage OverviewIBM announced $1 billion in investments on flash and software-defined storage. “Storage is changing more than it’s changed in the previous 30 years,” Eric Herzog of IBM Storage Systems told the crowd. And getting the most from data requires storing and accessing it quickly and cost-effectively. The plummeting cost of flash storage makes real-time analytics possible; soon, that feature will be a necessity. Among new innovations announced at the conference are IBM Spectrum Control Storage Insights, a SaaS solution for data management in a hybrid cloud that lowers the cost of storage by nearly 50 percent and that can be deployed in 30 minutes, and Big Storage Technology, an Active Cloud archive service for customers managing large amounts of data.

Session:

Digital Transformation: Breaking ThroughThis session explored hybrid cloud, which lets users combine mobile data, IoT, and legacy systems into an infrastructure using PowerSystems analytics to turn disparate data into actionable insights. “The technologization and digitalization of all our industries is happening in real time,” said speaker Tom Rosamilla, SVP IBM Systems. “The question we have to ask ourselves is: Are we ready?”

IBM announced Power System E850, the industry’s first four-socket system with flexible capacity and up to 70 percent guaranteed utilization; Power System E880, which scales to an unprecedented 192 cores and shows ideal linear scaling capability up to that capacity; and IBM PurePower System, which supports up to 12 times greater workload density than select competitors—and has a virtualization hypervisor with zero documented vulnerabilities.

ExecutiveEdge: Creating a Differentiated Client ExperienceThe new measure of success is the quality of your customers’ experience. Thanks to mobile advances, today’s consumer wants speed, immediacy, simplicity, and context. “If an app is taking too long to respond, I’m done with it,” said Ross Mauri, SVP IBM Systems.

Having an app is not a mobile strategy, and a lack of infrastructure advances is any company’s biggest roadblock to app and mobile innovation. As Julie Ask, a VP at Forrester Research, noted, “Only 4 percent of enterprises have the capabilities to meet shifted mobile expectations.”
