The proprietor ,Shri.APJ Parupayya s forefathers hailed from neighbouring district doing the fruit trading since their coming to Painavu 15 years back. Now they are well established and are leading buyers sellers in the private fruit market. PREPARATION FOR THE SESSIONS: After receiving the approvals for conducting trainings from National Centre for Cold Chain

Development (NCCD), we have contacted Agricultural Research stations,Banks Regional offices

Mandi Board,Fruit Ripening Chambers owners, fruit Traders,Horticulture Department ,the

response is overwhelming.

While the trainings were sanctioned by NCCD for 25 trainees per batch, the local response from

youth was more. At the registration time approximately 40- 50 candidates showed up to

participate. All the candidates preregistered and last minute showings are also allowed to

participate in the training.

AGENDA: EMPLOYMENT GENERATION

Page 11: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY RIPENIG CHAMBER TRAININGS KERALA Report Painavu.pdf · 2017. 2. 2. · EXECUTIVE SUMMARY RIPENIG CHAMBER TRAININGS KERALA Kerala produces about 10.89 m. MT of horticulture

As this is the first program of its kind, unemployed learned skills suitable for running ripening

chambers. Owners of the Ripening Chambers promised to give employment to the trained

persons in due course of time.

These trainings are planned on written demand of owners of Ripening Chambers infrastructure,

who also assured employment opportunity to the trainees. The prospective employers ie:

ripening chamber owners allowed practical trainings in their facility and actively participated

with the trainees, and clear the doubts of trainees during the practical session.

It’s a dawn of new beginning the present generation is beginning to understand the importance

and benefits of the industry. We hope to see an upcoming change in due course of time.

Actual employment generated will be monitored and reported to the NCCD

FEEDBACK FROM AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY

Experts from the agricultural college , expressed the necessity for such program by

which sustainable livelihood can be created to the youth. This program helps in creating

Page 12: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY RIPENIG CHAMBER TRAININGS KERALA Report Painavu.pdf · 2017. 2. 2. · EXECUTIVE SUMMARY RIPENIG CHAMBER TRAININGS KERALA Kerala produces about 10.89 m. MT of horticulture

awareness about the ill effects of carbide use besides raising the issue of safe and scientific

ripening chambers for fruits.

Youth who undergo this training program would be able to handle the ripening

chambers in scientific and systematic way. Moreover they themselves can successfully become

potential entrepreneurs by taking up ripening chambers as agriculture allied activity. Thereby

they are able to create employment and also become job providers rather than job seekers.

This program would help representatives of the ripening chambers to know the scientific

and systemic approach to handle their existing units. There by able to cut down the lapses in

handling and save the quality of the fruit and gain economical benefits.

The unskilled workers from the ripening chambers would be the best benefitted as they

able to understand the scientific principle behind every operation they use to perform earlier.

Even a small skill they learnt during the program would help them to handle the existing unit

with more science and precision. This in long run would help the unit to gain efficiency and

quality output for sustainable economical benefits which would trigger entrepreneurial activity in

this direction which has direct bearing on employment generation.

FEEDBACK FROM BANKERS AND INDUSTRY EXPERTS

Soundira Murty ,suggested the entrepreneurs to come forward to take up ripening

infrastructure for which he is ready to allot space in the Market Yard.. He also stated that

ripening chamber technology is first of its kind in Painavu, they haven’t got such sort of

Page 13: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY RIPENIG CHAMBER TRAININGS KERALA Report Painavu.pdf · 2017. 2. 2. · EXECUTIVE SUMMARY RIPENIG CHAMBER TRAININGS KERALA Kerala produces about 10.89 m. MT of horticulture

proposal till today, if any ripening chamber proposal with proper paper work is submitted to

bank will be encouraged and getting sanction of loan from the Bank.

Murugesan requested for conduct of more number of such trainings in view of demand,

and requested to take up ripening chambers as many as possible in the coming mango season.

He also said that many farmers are intending to go for Ripening Chamber construction.

FEEDBACK FROM TRAINEES

The participants are very happy for the skill development and the initiative taken by the

NCCD to educate and train those regarding ripening, Government help to public regarding

ripening chambers which is not known to most of the public.

Page 14: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY RIPENIG CHAMBER TRAININGS KERALA Report Painavu.pdf · 2017. 2. 2. · EXECUTIVE SUMMARY RIPENIG CHAMBER TRAININGS KERALA Kerala produces about 10.89 m. MT of horticulture

They suggested that more such training programs should be conducted in different

places of Maharashtra which will enable people to know about natural ripening and help them

to do natural ripening using ripening chambers with the government help.

The participants expressed that government should implement the ban on carbide usage

in ripening of fruits.

They opined that government organizations Self Help groups (SHG’s), Consumer

protection Associations should be involved in conducting campaigns in educating the general

public about harmful effects of carbide and advantages of ethylene ripening. Many activists

attended the program and expressed that a protest against carbide ripening should made at

Painavu for which they need support from the government.

An approach must also be initiated for awareness, for a basic start by printing of

pamphlets and posters in market areas for bringing awareness. The training program is

practical hands on experience and very helpful in understanding the operations of ripening

chamber and how the Government is actively available to support the cause.

FEEDBACK FROM FACULTY

The faculty opined that the general public should be educated that ethylene ripening is

similar to natural ripening and hence the point may be highlighted.

To encourage purchasing ethylene treated fruits incentive for ethylene treated fruit may

be sanctioned by government NHB/NHM to the penultimate consumer.
