Words from the President & CEO:

It seems like yesterday that my family gathered inbreathless anticipation for the delivery of our firstcolor television set. It was massive. We gazed inamazement as the florescent colors flickered inArt Linkletter’s necktie and danced on the LennonSisters’ dresses. You actually had to get off thecouch to change the channel – you had a grandtotal of three choices. That was 1965.

Well, it’s now 2005. We have 500 cable stations, countless music channels, internet connect, andwide screen high-def with surround sound. Soonyou will connect your plasma screen to yourcomputer, opening the door to unlimited world-wide content. And you will download yourfavorite TV shows on your Palm Pilot. Anytime.Anywhere.

The pace of today’s changing broadcast land-scape is staggering. So, how does WTTW11,born 50 years ago, stay relevant in today’sworld? And how does 98.7WFMT endure in the21st century? Those questions are a mantra atour management and production meetings. We believe that to stay relevant, we need toprovide a multi-dimensional sensory experi-ence. Now, more than ever, public televisionand classical radio have become a communitymeeting place. We must reach out to ourviewers and listeners in a way that affects themboth emotionally and intellectually.

Throughout 2004, the staff at WTTW11 and98.7WFMT focused not only on producing thevery best programming, but on ways to extendthe experience. In January, we hosted our firstTaste of Check, Please!, a special event that fea-tured 24 restaurants seen on our hit show – morethan 400 people attended. In September, wehosted a Get Ready to Learn event -- nearly 1,000children joined Between the Lions characters toread stories, play educational games and collectschool supplies for underprivileged families. InAugust, 2,000 children came to Lincoln Park for a5K walk and a 3K run to benefit quality children’sprogramming. Faces lit up as children met theirfavorite characters, got treats and balloon ani-mals, and danced to live music.

Throughout the year, 98.7WFMT proudly openedits Fay and Daniel Levin Performance Studio to84 artists, who performed short segments live onthe radio. Chicago’s only remaining classicalmusic station continued its commitment to localperforming ensembles -- from the ChicagoChamber Musicians to the Elgin SymphonyOrchestra. We also joined to celebrate the open-ing of the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in MillenniumPark by broadcasting one of their first concerts.

This year, more than ever, we welcomedChicagoans of all ages into our studios – fromrock fans for Soundstage to the ChicagoChildren’s Choir, from international journaliststouring the Digital Broadcast Center to highschool students participating in the senatorialcandidate forums. The goal of every special eventwas to better connect to our 4 million monthlyviewers and 1.3 million monthly listeners.

In closing, I want to thank our tireless Board ofTrustees for their long hours and invaluablecontributions; our dedicated staff, who are com-mitted to producing the best that broadcastinghas to offer; and our members and donors, who make WTTW11 and 98.7WFMT possible.

As you browse through this year’s annual report, you will see images that reflect the passion felt bythe people behind your favorite programs. Thankyou for appreciating their work.

Sincerely,

Dan SchmidtPresident & CEO/Network Chicago
