We began offering IOP in 2012 as an opportunity for women to continue treatment after completing our residential program. Experience has shown that spending more time in active treatment gives women a better chance for success in achieving and maintaining long-term sobriety. Our IOP group, led by a dedicated addiction counselor, meets four mornings each week in the Lorene Lake Center located on our property in Crownsville. A unique feature of the Chrysalis House IOP is our on-site transitional housing for single women in the program. Unlike most other transitional (or recovery) housing, Chrysalis House does not charge any rent to these residents. This allows them to begin to transition into the community without the financial burden that can be stressful for people in early recovery. Shoshoni is one of our IOP clients who transitioned from residential treatment. Although she is not permitted to have her 8-year-old son reside with her here, she appreciates the opportunity to remain with us rather than returning to her prior home. “IOP has opened doors for me… I learned more about myself, and I learned patience. We get gut-level honest with each other, and all of us are growing together in the program.” Cristina also moved up to IOP from residential. The program is helping her learn to “live life on life’s terms,” and to handle any situations that come her way. “Without IOP, I wouldn’t have had the time to learn to love myself and learn about myself in a way that benefits my present and my future. I’m getting to know who I am as a sober person.” Shoshoni (l.) and Cristina (r.) continue their connection to each other, and to Chrysalis House, through their participation in our Intensive Outpatient Program. Chrysalis House Intensive Outpatient Program: an opportunity for more treatment and safe housing Although Chrysalis House is known primarily for our residential treatment program, our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) has become a crucial element in the continuum of services that we offer to women with substance use and mental health disorders. We began offering IOP in 2012 as an opportunity for women to continue treatment after completing our residential program.

Experience has shown that spending more time in active treatment gives women a better chance for success in achieving and maintaining long-term sobriety. Our IOP group, led by a dedicated addiction counselor, meets four

mornings each week in the Lorene Lake Center located on our property in Crownsville.

“IOP has opened doors for me… I learned

more about myself, and I learned patience. We get gut-level honest with each other, and all of us are growing together in the program.”

Cristina also moved up to IOP from residential. The program is helping her learn to “live life on life’s terms,” and to handle any situations that come her way. “Without IOP, I wouldn’t have had the time to learn to love myself and learn about myself in a way that benefits my present and my future. I’m getting to know who I am as a sober person.”

Shoshoni (l.) and Cristina (r.) continue their connection to each other, and to Chrysalis House, through their participation in our Intensive Outpatient Program.

Chrysalis House Welcomes Amanda Greco, M.Ed.Childhood Development Supervisor/Early Childhood Development Specialist

Chrysalis House is pleased to welcome Amanda Greco to our team. With 20 years of experience in early childhood education, Amanda has a true passion for working with children and supporting other early childhood professionals. She collaborates with Program Director Carressa Christian to ensure that the Child Development program is structured and nurturing.

What drew Amanda to Chrysalis House was our mission. “I truly feel that I am able to make a difference in the lives of the women and children we serve…. I am able to support our clients and children as well as support and develop my teaching staff. I am so excited about the future of our Child Development Center. I feel honored to be able to share my expertise and create a program that will continue to change the lives of our women and children.”

Loren Weisman, Amanda Greco, and Chris McCabe with Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County President & CEO Mary Spencer (r.), who stopped in for a visit at the Child Development Center during a tour of our facility.

Graduations! These are times of celebration for family and friends and signify an accomplishment, a mile-stone, often accompanied with gifts and congratulations.

Here at Chrysalis House, graduations take on quite a different meaning. Many of the women in treatment here in Crownsville have been through ten or more long-term programs without achieving sustained sobriety. Many come from generational addiction.

Completion of our program, sometimes described as “Boot Camp for Recovery,” is such a significant accomplishment as to be life changing. Once a month, Chrysalis House hosts a graduation for the ladies who have completed our arduous inpatient treatment program. During these ceremonies, which include singing and testimonials from staff, family members, and peers, the story of this transformative journey becomes real. Near the end of the ceremony, each of the graduates shares her lit candle with her “sisters” in recovery. In return, each sister offers a verbal gift of special meaning. The celebration concludes with the pinning of butterfly wings and the awarding of a graduation certificate. It is tearful time of joy, as you can see in these photos.

It is fitting that we thank everyone who supported Chrysalis House during the past year, with a financial contribution, a gift in kind, or partnership. This newsletter highlights a few of our relationships with the community, which we value greatly. We are grateful for the many benefactors whose contributions enhance our core treatment programs; you can view our 2019 contributor list in this newsletter (p. 4).

Spring is a time of rebirth in many ways and I send goodwill to you and your families as the seasons advance.

Sincerely, Christopher J. McCabe (Chris)Executive Director

Community Partners: a vital link in the chain

A group from Cisco Systems painted our conference room and assisted with tree trimming along our driveway.

Maryland First Lady Yumi Hogan visited our facility to distribute holiday gifts to our women and children that were collected by the Anne Arundel County Food and Resource Bank. This was Mrs. Hogan’s second visit to Chrysalis House!

Chrysalis House was recently blessed with a new big-screen TV for our group room, donated by our friends at the Recovery Awareness Foundation.

Client artwork will be on display during “An Evening at Chrysalis House: Stories of Resilience and Recovery.” See p. 6 for details.

Chrysalis House clients recently created handmade flowers with the help of volunteer Judy Tucker.
