MAY 2011

AMERICO and MARIA SILVA In his 9 years service in the Order since 2002, Brother Americo has served in the various service programs with

passion. He is a quintessential ‘doer’ who not only strives to perform with enthusiasm but consistently does so in

whatever venue he contributes.

An Immediate Past Grand Knight and Council 6855 Health Services Director, He is also Richmond Volunteer Team

Leader for Canadian Blood Services. Of particular note, is his consistent support to the on-site Blood Clinic at St. Paul

Parish for which he prepares and leads a cadre of Knights and their wives who works in the hospitality service.

A core member of the SARAH –a prevention ministry program of the Knights of Columbus, Bro.Americo provides his

skills and supports projects which benefits the community at large.

A Fourth Degree Knight, Sir Knight Americo functions as an Honour Guard for Pope John Paul Assembly 2485.

Despite their deep involvement in the Portuguese Community, Brother Americo and his wife, Maria has always

demonstrated their support for our council, community and church programs.

In the recent Marian Hour of Prayer last May 25th

, Maria provided our council with 25 roses for Our Lady of Charity.

She brings bouquet of flowers and flower center pieces for our Knights of Columbus functions when necessary.

Congratulations SILVA FAMILY and God Bless you for your unconditional support.

MAY 2011

CHARLES SZE A member of the Knights of Columbus since May 01, 1992, Brother Charles Sze has continually been of service to the

Order. He actively participates in our church and council programs and is a constant supporter of our fundraising

events. Bro. Charles has served in the Executive Level as a Trustee for 2 years.

A regular usher in the 10:30am Mass, he was a Choir 6855 member together with his wife, Doris.

Bro.Charles involves himself in special prayer service, one of with the most recent Marian Hour of Prayer held last

May 25, 2011 with his wife, Doris, a CWL member reciting one decade of the Rosary.

A Fourth Degree Knight, he served as one of the 24 Honour Guards in the May 1st

Beatification of Pope

John Paul II held at the Holy Rosary Cathedral. If anyone wants to bond with Bro.Charles, a golf game will make it, as

witnessed during last Sunday’s KofC Annual Golf Tournament.

Congratulations BROTHER CHARLES and Thank you for your continued support.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS

MAY 15, 2011

Each year, on the Fourth Sunday of Easter, Knights throughout the world participate on the annual World Day of Prayer for Vocations. This day is an opportunity for all Knights to raise awareness of the need for men and women to say yes to their vocations, especially if one is called to the priesthood or religious life.

With the help of the Knights of Columbus, thousands will hear their calls as a result of our prayers and vocation materials.

As Knights, we know the difference that one good priest can make.

A PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS

Heavenly Father, bless Your Church with an abundance of holy and zealous priests, deacons, brothers and sisters.

Give those You have called to the married state and those You have chosen to live as single persons in the world the special graces that their lives require.

Form us all in the likeness of Your Son so that in Him, with Him and through Him we may love You more deeply and serve You more faithfully, always and everywhere. With Mary we ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Field Agent

Still Have Just Group Insurance?

As a Knights of Columbus field agent, I hear about group life insurance every week. If you

have it, it’s certainly not a bad thing, but it can be a misleading security blanket. Most times,

the amount offered is far from what you need, and the only way to determine what you need is

with a comprehensive needs analysis. Your group coverage is not based on any analysis.

Instead, they apply a formula: you make X amount in salary and the group life is either a flat

amount ($15,000 seems popular) or a multiple of your salary (somewhere between 1.5 and 2.5

is common). Either way, it has nothing to do with the number of children you have, the

mortgage balance you carry, or the amount of money your wife would need if you die. It’s a

completely random number.

It can also disappear at any time. All of us know people – friends, family members, neighbors

– who have lost their jobs. When the job is lost, so is the group life insurance coverage. If the

company experiences difficulty and budgets need to be cut, group life can be reduced or

eliminated. And that decision could be made at the worst possible time for you.

Most group life insurance coverage reduces or disappears when you retire. Many times it can be

converted, but at a very expensive premium (remember, you’re no kid anymore when you

retire, and premiums do rise as you get older). Just because you turn 65 doesn’t mean you no

longer need life insurance or need less coverage. Actually, the opposite is true.

Do you still own just group life insurance? It must be supplemented with a personally-owned

portfolio. I can tell you exactly how to blend your group benefit with your K of C life insurance

so things can be in your control. Don’t let the feeling of security that group life provides

distract you from the real issue: taking control of your family’s financial future!

I’m at 778-837-2317 or [email protected]. Call me – let’s talk.

Global Wheelchair Mission

Canadian Wheelchair Foundation / Fondation Chaise Roulante Canada

BC & Yukon State Council

Wish to Thank:

visit in Vietnam in conjunction with the Knights of Columbus and the Global Wheelchair Mission team-up in bringing Wheelchairs to those who lack freedom of mobility.

Knights of Columbus and The Global Wheelchair Mission

The Knights of Columbus and the Global Wheelchair Mission have teamed up to help bring wheelchairs to those who lack freedom of mobility. The Global Wheelchair Mission purchases wheelchairs in bulk and delivers them by sea containers around the world. In 2003, the Knights of Columbus began participating in the Global Wheelchair Mission and sponsored 2,000 wheelchairs to be distributed in Afghanistan. Since then, Knights in Canada and US have sponsored some 20,000 wheelchairs in Argentina, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Jordan, Mexico, Morocco, Oman, Panama, Philippines, Poland, the United States and Vietnam. For every donation of $150.00 received by the Global Wheelchair Mission, it can deliver a brand new wheelchair which would cost over $500.00 in a medical supply store. They are shipped by 100 to 280 containers directly from the factory to the destination countries at no cost to the recipients. Each year, Archbishop Duke Council 6855 donates fund to this Global Wheelchair Mission program.

Michael Ripplinger

Council Coordinator Stamps and Eyeglasses Program

Archbishop Duke Council 6855 has collected a total number of 17, 135 postage stamps and 390 Used Eyeglasses for Fraternal Year 2010-2011. The donations of Used Eyeglasses are turned over to The Burnaby Lougheed Lions Club who in turn send them to Third World Countries. This is a very important community initiative under the Council Activities banner. Postage Stamps are sold and the proceeds are made part of the jurisdiction’s ‘Pennies for Heaven’ collection which is a Council Activities project. The Knights of Columbus Stamps and Eyeglasses Program in the leadership of Council Coordinator Brother Michael Ripplinger will gladly accept all used postage stamps and used eyeglasses in their wooden collection box at the back of our parish church. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS AND

THE INEXPLICABLE SARAH PROGRAM

"An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure"

by Dr. Larina Reyes-Smith

Every time I am asked what SARAH Program is all about, I find it difficult to explain, and people walk away still confused. The concept is simple, but the popular idea of what addiction prevention is all about is a barrier to the understanding of this program. It is also a program that is difficult to measure or quantify the effect, because what it gives is something that develops in the individual over time.

Literature suggests prevention (primary) of drug use to begin at home...reinforced by community programs... Evidence supports prevention as the most effective way to deal with addiction

SARAH Program was born in 2004 as a faith-based Prevention Ministry. Its mission is primarily the prevention of development and/or progression of addiction in all stages of life, by tapping into the person, family unit, and social network’s strength and assets. It was officially launched as SARAH Program, under the support of the Knights of Columbus of St. Paul Parish, on July 19, 2008.

SARAH spell out its mission and vision: the utilization of the individual’s/family/parish’s Strength and assets; foster an increase in Awareness of behaviors or life choices that can destroy individuals and families (or lead to addiction) as usually promoted by today’s popular culture; help individuals to develop Resilience; Acceptance of those who may already be suffering from addiction and requiring help; and finally Health promotion. Over time, skills and knowledge gained will be applicable to all aspects of life choices.

SARAH Program’s logo and color helps define its faith component - the fire, inspiration, and guidance of the Holy Spirit to keep the program alive; and the blue mantle of Mother Mary protecting it.

How did SARAH come into being? I’d say, Providential. Providential, because when I was training at St. Paul’s Hospital, I noticed that many of the patients I saw had underlying addiction. During and after my training, two things became apparent to me:

1. Addiction affects people from all life background regardless of age, profession, gender, religious beliefs, or race. The majority of those already diagnosed with the disease are still in the work force!

2. The treatment and prevention of addiction is the same! That is, provision and acquisition of core values, basic life needs, and basic life skills that help us make good life choices.

The disease of addiction affects not just the body, mind and relationships, but also the soul/spirit). Many addiction prevention programs address primarily the first 3, and minimal for the soul/spirit. So, where else could a prevention program be more appropriate and far reaching than in a faith community? After all, aren’t we our brother’s keeper (Gen 4:9)? For with faith as the foundation, we are able to weather the storm of life that could lead to this illness, (which unlike other illnesses) that could kill not just the body, but also the soul, as our “body is a temple of the Holy Spirit...” (1Cor19).

Providential, because as I was looking for the opportunity to put this idea of faith-based prevention, Christopher Course came to St. Paul Parish in 2004. This course in communication is faith based, and requires a project from the participants at the end of the course. Prevention Ministry (SARAH Program) was my promised project.

Providential, because Msgr. Luterbach eventually agreed for this program to exist.

Providential, because at one Pancake Breakfast held by the Knights of Columbus, an innocent comment made by me in the earshot of the then Grand Knight Kevin Pinto, brought this ministry under the support of the Knights of Columbus... The rest is history.

AUTHOR is Dr. Larina Reyes-Smith, an International Medical Graduate from the Philippines. She is CSAM (Canadian Society of

Medicine) and ABAM (American Board of Addiction Medicine) certified. She is board certified by the Canadian College of

Family Physicians and currently practicing Addiction Medicine and HIV/AIDS in BC.

“The most pressing duty

of Christians is to live the

liturgical life, and increase

and cherish its supernatural

spirit” Pope Pius XII

Fr. Emmerich is a priest of the Holy Name

Province of the Dominican Order and is

currently ministering with Western

Dominican Preaching.

For the past twenty-nine years he has

been involved in giving retreats to

Mother Teresa’s Priests and Sisters in

Mexico, Poland, Guatemala, Calcutta, and

Africa. Former pastor of Holy Rosary

Church in Portland, Oregon, he currently

resides in Oakland, CA.

From a family with alcohol and drug

addiction, Fr. Emmerich has studied the

12-steps for his own healing and to help

others to overcome obstacles and find

peace.

His series for EWTN is entitled “The

Eucharistic Principles of the Spiritual Life’.

FOR WHOM: • Do your good feelings about yourself depend on being liked by other people?

• Are your happiness and peace dependent on pleasing others?

• Does your fear of rejection determine what you say or do?

• Is it hard to express your feelings when the people you love are

not doing what you want them to do?

• Do you feel like you give a lot and get little in return?

• Do you freeze up emotionally when you are in conflict?

• Do you feel like you are the only on holding your family together?

• Do you have difficulty asking for what you want?

• Are you overly defensive when your behavior is criticized?

• Is your life miserable because of someone else's behavior?

• Do you have difficulty saying "No"?

• Do you work or eat compulsively?

• Have you ever thought you'd be better off if you didn't keep giving in?

• Do you resort to sex to escape, relieve anxiety, or because you can't cope?

• Is your pursuit of sexual gratification compulsive?

If you can answer ‘yes’ to some of the above questions, then perhaps a

Mission on Spiritual Healing can help you find that peace which the world cannot give – a peace that comes from a spiritual life led in union with Christ and according to Christian principles.

Before things go from bad to worse, come and learn more about yourself

by discovering a practical, spiritual program which, if lived one day at a time, leads to that ‘peace beyond all understanding’.
