Executive MBA in Management of Technology – MoT

Objectives

As most Executive MBAs, the "Executive MBA in Management of Technology"

provides a strong understanding of business. But in addition, it also has the

following objectives:

To develop and stimulate entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship competencies;

To ensure success in innovation by fostering a multidisciplinary approach to the

conception, industrialization and commercialization of products or services;

To provide insights into the constraints and interactions within the technological,

business, international and social environments.

Program The program is made up of three distinctive but complementary parts:

1. Training at the University of Lausanne with its Faculty of Business and Economics

(UNIL-HEC) and at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale of Lausanne (EPFL), from

September 2012 to early June 2013 (on Friday and Saturday).

2. Study Trip in China with enterprise visits and seminars in top ranked Universities

in Beijing and Shanghai, mid-June to early July 2013. There is a possibility of

extension to India, in Bangalore and Mumbai.

3. Project work within a company or starting a new venture in any location

worldwide mid-August to mid-November 2013.

The training in Lausanne is made up of 20 modules taking place on Friday and

Saturday (except for the one week introduction module, or for life sciences optional

modules). It focuses on the interaction of 4 major themes. On one hand:

Management

Entrepreneurship

Modules on these themes develop participant’s competences in entrepreneurship

(creating new enterprises) and in intrapreneurship (creating new activities within

existing firms). Academic teaching and participants' diversified background &

experience produce the necessary mix to develop a new mindset. On the other

hand, two other themes, as options:

Innovation in High-Tech

Innovation in Life Sciences

They allow the participants to choose the theme and modules they are most

interested in. Both innovation themes can also be taken.

The teaching is based on a concrete, pragmatic approach with extensive use of case

studies fostering class participation and group work. Throughout the program, an

entrepreneurial project leads all participants to experiment, prepare and develop, in

teams, business plans for the creation, launch and growth of new ventures.

The study trip and training period in China (and India), with top universities, like

the University of Peking (and the Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore),

provides a perspective for doing business in the fastest growing areas in the world.

The practical part of the program consists of an innovative project work that shall

be of strategic importance for the hosting enterprise, organization or new venture.





Curriculum

Features

• Entrepreneurial approach with the development of real business plans by multidisciplinary teams

• Study trip with seminars in highly regarded universities in China (+India) and with enterprise visits

• 3 month project, possibly performed in pairs, within a company/new venture

• High level and intensive program, but possibility to maintain 60-80% of professional activities

while training takes place in Lausanne, usually on Friday and Saturday

• Management modules with networking opportunities as they are shared with the EMBA “in

Management & corporate Finance” and “in Healthcare Management” of HEC

Flexible offering

• Two options: “Innovation & High-Tech” or “Innovation & Life Sciences”

• As a lighter alternative to the EMBA in MoT, a “Diploma of Advanced Study” (DAS) in MoT can

be obtained by following the MoT curriculum, without the two Management blocs

• Modules in the Innovation & Life Sciences bloc are open to participants not enrolled to the

EMBA in MoT. When 5 modules are successfully completed by those participants, a Certificate of

Advanced Study (CAS) in “Management of Biotech, Medtech & Pharma Ventures” can be obtained.

• When China and India modules are successfully completed, a Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) in

“Doing Business in Asia” can be obtained, when enough credits remains for the MoT EMBA.
