Gavin KretzschmarProfessor Kretzschmar holds the endowed PwC Chair of Accounting and Finance at KIMEP University and has done so for the past four years. This Chair position has been renewed in recognition of PwC’s commitment to Kazakhstan and also reflects the high level of research, quality and corporate

engagement by Professor Kretzschmar. He has held high level banking directorships and specializes in Executive Education. His governance experience is combined with wide ranging research skills and academic publications. With prior positions as Finance Director of Standard Bank specialized in retail, commercial and investment banking experiencing. Dr Kretzschmar now holds the position of Finance Professor at Barcelona Business School. The role Professor Kretzschmar performs in Central Asia fits seamlessly with a role that requires. Energy Finance to be taught at his home university in Barcelona. In particular, PwC is proud to be associated with the Energy teaching stream at Barcelona Business School through Professor Kretzschmar. Research interest:Professor Kretzschmar’s Research focuses on two areas: Energy Finance and the effects of commodity volatility on Oil and Gas companies. The second research area covers bank asset pricing, risk and economic capital. Mr. Marat BakpayevMr. Bakpayev has served as In-ditex Brands Manager for Retail Group Kazakhstan, where he was responsible for the coun-try business development of Zara, Massimo Dutti, Pull&Bear, Bershka, and Stradivarius. As Branch Director of Nergy Re-tail, Mr. Bakpayev oversaw the opening of Celio and Sine-

quanone stores in Kazakhstan. At Leo Burnett, an international advertising agency, Mr. Bakpayev man-aged marketing in Kazakhstan for a variety of brands, including Tide, Myth, Always, Tampax, Discreet, W&G, Camay, Secret, Max Factor, Red Bull, Kazcom, the Mukhtar Auezov Foundation and the AIDS Foundation East-West. Mr. Bakpayev is currently pursuing a Ph.D at the NEOMA Business School in France, and holds an MBA from Washington University in Saint Louis, in the United States. Hong KongKIMEP University Executive MBA students got the opportunity to study the economic success story of one of the “Asian Tigers” up close during a nine day trip to Hong Kong. Conducted from September 13 to 22, 2013 the trip included 32 participants from the program. Highlights of the trip included visits to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Participants also took in a seminar entitled “Doing Business in Hong Kong”, learning about the Special Autonomous Region’s simplified tax regime and free trade policies. Two courses, Applied Mangerial Economics and Management Control Systems, were offered during the trip.

PragueBetween March 15 and 25, 2013, KIMEP University MBA students traveled to Prague for in a special module on Strategic Management and Business Policy. The module was conducted in cooperation with the city’s Higher School of Economics. The European Study Abroad Centre and its director, Dr. Kristine Zamastil, provided support for the trip. Participants held a number of meetings, including with the Staropramen brewery, Radio Free Europe and Max Munson’s acclaimed Jama restaurant.
