St. Anthony’s | Executive Director

About the Organization

St. Anthony’s is a highly regarded organization in San Francisco providing essential support to community members living in poverty. Through its inclusive hospitality model, staff and volunteers welcome each guest in need with dignity and respect. St. Anthony’s is home to some of the city’s only no-cost services, where community members may access meals, clothing, comprehensive medical care, case management, technology, workforce development, and a men’s addiction recovery program. Central to all of the organization’s activities are the Franciscan values of healing, community, personalism, justice, and gratitude.

Over six decades ago, Father Alfred Boeddeker started the ministry with a vision of uniting vulnerable populations in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood. Since that time, St. Anthony’s has been fulfilling its mission to feed, heal, shelter, clothe, and lift the spirits of those in need, and create a society in which all people flourish. Today, the Bay Area faces an unprecedented crisis of homelessness and wealth inequality; as a key provider of basic, essential services, St. Anthony’s is faced with the responsibility to innovate its programs to better address current needs.

St. Anthony’s is an outreach ministry of the Franciscan friars of the Province of Santa Barbara, and as such is overseen by the Board of Trustees of the Franciscans. The friars are members of a Roman Catholic religious Order, from a diversity of backgrounds and cultures, dedicated to serving the poor and promoting justice, peace, care of creation, and reconciliation in the joyful and prophetic spirit of St. Francis of Assisi. St. Anthony’s is also supported by a volunteer Board of Directors, which provides strategic guidance to the management of the organization.

St. Anthony’s | Executive Director

The Executive Director of St. Anthony’s will join an organization on solid footing financially, reputationally, and programmatically. The challenge facing the new leader is to set a strategic, evolutionary vision for innovation that stays true to its foundational mission and values.

Within the broader Franciscan ecosystem, St. Anthony’s is a significant embodiment of Franciscan ministry and values. The Executive Director will partner with the Board of Trustees to sharpen St. Anthony’s articulation and integration of Franciscan values and spirituality in all the work the Franciscans do, from program delivery to social justice education and advocacy. The Executive Director will have a vision for mobilizing the next generation of donors and volunteers to follow the example of St. Francis in their own way through a mix of program innovation and public engagement.

As a beloved institution that has been serving San Francisco’s poor for decades, St. Anthony’s has a deep well of experience from which to draw and contribute to the city-wide conversation on poverty and homelessness. The Executive Director will be a key external face in the community—bridging across sectors, service providers, and religious institutions—to help develop programs and services to meet the evolving needs of St. Anthony’s guests.

St. Anthony’s is poised for a period of organizational growth. The Executive Director will guide staff in partnership with the Boards of Directors and Trustees to innovate existing services where needed and thoughtfully expand services while ensuring that growth is aimed at more effectively meeting the needs of the poor and marginalized in an appropriately Franciscan way.

The Executive Director will make it a priority to maximize the passion and capabilities of a diverse staff and board, identifying and supporting opportunities for organizational and individual development while celebrating and reinforcing areas of strength, and enhancing a participatory and transparent culture.

Although ultimately responsible to the Board of Trustees, the Executive Director reports directly to the Chair of the Board of Directors, the Executive Committee, and the Board of Directors. The Executive Director is an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors.

The Ideal Candidate

In its next Executive Director, St. Anthony’s seeks a servant leader who has a heart for working with and alongside the poor, as well as direct-service experience and a broad set of management skills.

The ideal candidate has a personal mission of serving people who are poor, disadvantaged, and outcast out of an impulse to honor the dignity of all people and to offer hospitality to anyone regardless of their life circumstances. While candidates do not need to be Catholic, successful candidates will have deep personal resonance with St. Anthony’s values of healing, community, personalism, justice, and gratitude, be sensitive to the faith-based commitments of the Franciscans friars, and have a reputation for living out those values in their professional and personal lives.

St. Anthony’s seeks a leader who will bring vision and a strategic mind to the task of meeting basic needs in a city and a community where those needs are both highly visible and the subject of much attention. The ideal candidate has a track record of bringing multiple stakeholders—internal and external—to the table to create and implement innovative programs to meet the evolving needs of both clients and community. This individual understands the basics of the social policy landscape and how to work within the ecosystem to determine St. Anthony’s most effective contribution.

The incoming Executive Director will have experience working closely with a board of directors to maximize its effectiveness in supporting the organization. With a facilitative style and a natural inclination toward collaboration, the ideal candidate is adept at managing change and fostering role clarity.

Candidates must have experience supervising organizational leaders, with a track record of developing management and leadership capabilities from within. The ideal candidate inspires employees to high levels of performance and holds staff accountable to commitments and standards. A practical understanding of organizational development, as well as leadership of organizational finances, is essential.

The new Executive Director will be a proactive representative of St. Anthony’s externally and internally, and be comfortable interacting regularly with guests, volunteers, and staff at all levels, as well as with the media and political leaders. The ideal candidate will be a practiced public speaker with a proven ability to shape public narrative and advocacy.

Candidates must be comfortable providing leadership to and participating in fundraising activities, particularly managing relationships with long-standing and new major donors. Experience leading an organization through a capital campaign is strongly preferred.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate familiarity with Catholic Social Teaching. Experience with or knowledge of the Franciscan tradition, and a general awareness of the structure of the US Franciscans, is helpful but not required.
