Executive Action on Immigration Will Improve the Lives of Women in
America
Topline: The November 20thdirectives from the Secretary of Homeland Security on
immigration will go a long way toward promoting economic security and family unity
for immigrant and native-born women in the United States !hile only "ongress can
permanently #$ our bro%en immigration system& these e$ecutive actions are a good
#rst step in %eeping families together& improving the economic position of
immigrant women& and ending the wage and employment e$ploitation that leaves
many immigrant women vulnerable to abuse
Executive action will keep families together:
- !hile there are '' million unauthori(ed immigrants living in the country& many
more people)'** millionin fact)live in mi$ed-status families& with documented
and undocumented members Nearly halfof the undocumented population are
women
- The November 20th directiveswill mean that up to + million unauthori(ed
immigrants)the ma,ority young ./1ers and parents of citi(en and permanent
resident children who have been in the country for + years)will gain temporary
protection from deportation and the ability to wor% legally This means that millions
of families will no longer have to live under the constant threat of deportation
- eeping families together is a %ey principal of merican democracy: .oughly
20+&000 parentsof citi(en children were deported between 20'0 and 20'2 alone&
and thousandsof undocumented children are in foster care each year because their
parents were deported
Executive action will help womens economic position:
- 3mmigrant women face a largergender wage gapthan their native-born
counterparts& and undocumented immigrant women earn the least out of all groups&
earning only 4' cents on the dollar& compared with undocumented men
- llowing undocumented women to gain temporary wor% permits means that their
wages go up& on average& by 5+ percent Higher earnings translates into greater
#nancial security for them and their families& and broader economic growth for all
- The vast ma,ority of deportations)more than 6 in '0in 20'7)are of men& leaving
women behind to bear the bruntof both raising children in the US and providing
for their family eferring the deportations of millions of people will mean that fewer
women will be put in such precarious positions

Executive action will make it less likely that women in the workforce face
exploitation:
- Undocumented wor%ers as a whole are more li%ely to face wor%place e$ploitation
such as wage theft or overtime violations& and are less li%ely to report such issues&
for fear of being discovered and8or deported
- Undocumented immigrant women face a second hurdle in the wor%place& as many
are employed in occupations)such as domestic care)that have some of the
highest proportions of these issues The combined e9ect ma%es undocumented
immigrant women some of the most vulnerable wor%ers in the labor force 3n factthey are nearly three timesmore li%ely to e$perience minimum wage violations than
native-born women
- iving millions of immigrant women the ability to obtain temporary legal
protections will allow them to more easilystand up against wor%place abuses& and
less li%ely to have unscrupulous employers hold the threat of deportation over their
heads& as a way of e$ploiting them ;i%ewise& with more people challenging bad-
apple employers& all wor%places& for all wor%erswill be made safer
