With the hustle and bustle of so many summertime events and not to mention all the vacation planning, it’s easy to neglect protecting our finances the way we should. So, ECU has put together 5 tips you can use to not only protect yourself, but your financial well-being too. EX E U TIVE NEWS YOUR QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER FROM EDUCATION CREDIT UNION 1 Prepare for your economic future. There may come a time in our lives when we need the help of someone else. It may be financially, emotionally, physically or all of the above. Regardless of the reason, we want someone we can trust. First, take the time to choose the person you want to handle your personal and financial affairs. This could be one of your children, a close family friend, or a relative. It’s important that they know and respect your wishes of how you’d like matters taken care of. There are many legal documents out there such as wills, trusts and powers of attorney, but choosing the right one for your family can be challenging. You might think about speaking with an attorney to discuss all of your options. 2 Develop a budget plan for your retirement. Retirement, is an exciting and life-changing event in our lives. But are we actually ready for this event to take place? If you haven’t already reached this point or even if you have, it’s never too late to have a retirement budget in place and have the retirement lifestyle you want. So, let’s talk preparation. This budget should include expenses that cover food, clothing, housing, transportation and health. Also include expenses that aren’t a necessity– like cable, gym membership, etc. Basically the things you could live without, but choose to have. Next, research the cost of health care – the cost before and after you retire. Make a list of leisure expenses: hobbies, entertainment, travel, etc. Making a retirement budget gives you the chance to see where your hard-earned money will or has been going. So enjoy your retirement...you deserve it! 3 Review your credit reports once a year. I enjoy giving a little insight on this topic. Always check your credit reports from Experian, Equifax, and Transunion once a year. Reviewing your credit reports gives you the chance to make sure everything is up-to-date. You simply go to Annualcreditreport. com, set up a login and within minutes you have access to all three of your credit reports for free. Remember this doesn’t include your actual credit score – just a summary of all the information on your credit report. 4 Protect your private information. It’s very important that we take the proper precautions to protect not only our personal documents, but our personal information. Only carry with you what you need. By doing this, it can eliminate the hassle if your purse or wallet is ever stolen. Plus, it makes it easier to report the items missing. Never ever carry your social security card with you. If your purse or wallet were to be stolen it could spell disaster for your credit and identity. Shred documents containing personal or financial information after their use. And remember to store personal and financial information in a safe place. This could be a designated area in your home, or for some items, you might think about a safe deposit box. These are perfect for documents like your will, passports, marriage license, and birth certificates. ECU has safe deposit boxes located at our I-40 and Bushland branches. Keeping your private information safeguarded and organized can make a world of difference. 5 Tips on common frauds. ECU would never call demanding any of your personal information over the phone. The security of your personal and financial information is of the utmost importance to us. However, there are many imposters and scams out there. Here are a few clues that could give the schemer away. Some scammers will call asking for personal or financial information. This is called phishing. The information they’re looking for could be your name, street address, social security number, credit card number and the list goes on. In some cases they may already have bits of your information and are basically trying to put together the rest of the puzzle. Be aware that scammers can obtain your private information in other ways as well. Scams can happen via email, phone, or mail. To give yourself added security, check out our identity protection link on our website. And just remember... if it’s too good to be true, then it probably is. ECU wants you to protect your financial well-being the way we would. C.S. Wilson & Associates offer financial and retirement planning services at 806-352-9251. Have a greatummer!

Dear Finance Friend My wife and I just upgraded to smart phones. Our friend who is also a member of ECU says

she checks her account balances on her smart phone and even transfers money with it. She’s quite a joker, so we’re wondering: Is what she says really possible? The saying goes, “There’s an app for that!”, so is there really an app for Education Credit Union? — Finally Arrived in the 21st Century

Dear Finally,ECU has a fabulous app that you can download for your Android or iPhone, and even tablets! Brand new features of our app allow you to log into your account by simply using thumbprint or eye print ID AND to “turn off” your debit card if you’ve misplaced it. Once you find that missing card, you can turn it right back on again using the app. If you use the app to report your card as lost or stolen, it will be shut down immediately and you will be given the choice of receiving your replacement card in the mail or picking it up at one of our branches. How convenient is that? Our mobile app allows members to securely access their account information, transfer money between accounts, and even deposit checks remotely! You can access your Bill Pay on your phone or tablet, allowing you to pay your bills with just a tap of a finger. There Is a lot to learn when using a smart device for the first time, so feel free to call or come by any of our branches. We’ll teach you all you need to know about our apps.
