Diehard bowling fans have missed the women’s pro tour, which has been dormant for four long years. That includes me and a couple of my longtime colleagues, Hall of Fame writers Dick Evans and John Jowdy.

The three of us would get together whenever the old PWBA (Professional Women’s Bowling Assn.) Tour was in Southern California, Las Vegas or Reno. It was always tough on Evans because he lives in Daytona Beach, Fla., and each time it would cost him a small fortune for a roundtrip airline ticket.

Remember when Sam’s Town Hotel, Casino & Bowling Center was the PWBA’s umbrella sponsor? Evans, Jowdy and I would travel to Sin City to watch the pro dollies—as the late Sam Levine liked to call them—in action. We always had a ball. We had even more fun whenever Chuck Pezzano, another Hall of Fame scribe, was able to join us.

There were many memorable moments at Sam’s Town. But the one that sticks out in my mind was the time Robin Romeo and Jeanne Naccarato captured the PWBA Track Doubles title.

That was in 2000, and Robin and Jeanne had vowed to win and dedicate the tournament to the memory of their fathers, who had recently passed away.

When the last ball was rolled, and Robin and Jeanne knew they had won, they broke down and wept on each other’s shoul-ders. Soon, they had everyone in the audience reaching for a

hanky. It was a very emotional scene, to put it mildly. It wasn’t very long after that that Sam’s Town, because of a

change in corporate management, dissolved its sponsorship with the PWBA.

And from then on, it was all downhill for the PWBA Tour, which went out of business in ‘03. It was a dark moment, not only for women’s bowling but for the sport of bowling in general as well.

The year of ’03 also was the last time the U.S. Women’s Open was conducted. The winner was a young Kelly Kulick, who was later voted the PWBA Rookie of the Year.

Now, four years later, Kulick will finally get the chance to defend her title, for the U.S. Women’s Open Presented by the USBC has been resurrected and will be staged Aug. 13-18 at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno.

And yes, Dick Evans, John Jowdy and I will be there to re-cord whatever happens for bowling posterity.

Also on hand will be Robin Romeo, who is still seeking new fields to conquer despite turning 50 in June. “I’ll continue to bowl competively as long as I have the fire in my belly,” she said.

A USBC Hall of Famer, Robin made headlines in the USBC Senior Masters at the National Bowling Stadium in July, when she became the first woman in the 15-year history of the tourna-ment to make the cut to match play.

The talented Newhall, Calif., right-hander went on to win her first two matches, but was eliminated when she lost her next two. Robin finished in the 17th- to 24th-place bracket, good for $1,200. It was a superb performance, considering the Senior Masters attracted 299 bowlers, a total that included three wom-en. (Linda Kelly, the former Team USA champion from Dayton,

Ohio, and Lela Larkin, who owns Roxy Ann Lanes in Medford, Ore., were the other two ladies.)

Robin won her first two matches with sets of 657 and 616, and then lost with 606 and 526.

“What happened in your final match?” I asked Robin. She replied, “I had a great shot playing the gutter. But the

shot wasn’t as good in my final match. I changed balls, but I should’ve moved inside. I also lost a little of my intensity.”

Robin said she was “a little nervous” when the Senior Masters started. “It helped, however, that I knew some of the bowlers, having competed against them in the (PWBA) Ladies and Leg-ends tournaments.

“It also helped that I crossed with Bob Kelly, Linda’s hus-band, since I knew him. Also, the other two bowlers on our pair were very friendly.”

Robin added that she plans to enter other PBA Senior Tour events in the future. “I feel I can compete on their level,” she said.

Robin, who retired from the PWBA Tour just before it went under—she toured for more than 20 years and captured 17 ti-tles—has entered the upcoming U.S. Women’s Open. She won the Open in 1989, which earned her the coveted Bowler of the Year crown.

In addition to the U.S. Women’s Open, Robin will put up the extra $750 to enter the inaugural PBA Women’s Series.

Scores in the Open will be used to determine the 16 “exempt” bowlers who will qualify for a unique five-week mini tour that will be shown by ESPN as part of the PBA Fall Tour.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve gotta start packing for my trip to “the Biggest Little City in the World” and watch “the Greatest, Most Exciting Women Bowlers in the World.”

LAKEWOOD—It’s count-down time for the start of the 50th consecutive season for the 16-team women’s 675 Classified Foursome. Opening Monday at Cal Bowl, the Trav-el league schedules 33 weeks of bowling and all centers dates and time are confirmed. The first three weeks, August 20-27 and September 10, will be slated at Cal Bowl to acco-modate the many needed subs for bowlers finishing summers league.

Cheryl Huntington, OCUS-BC super official, sent our league Sanction kit AND the Orange County new book av-erages to us at the end of July so we have those averages ver-ified. The LA USBC book is not yet available but we hope it may be within the next week so that we may verify higher averages registered from Cal and Cerritos.

Since this is a short col-umn, we want to include some interesting news about one of Long Beach’s bowling trea-sures, Bob Stickney, Actually, there’s three items about him.

First is the news that he and Frances celebrarted 63 years of wedded bliss on June 30,

Next is news that Bob re-cently fired a 280 game to prove age is only a number and he’s still knocking down big games and series. Finally, congratulations to Bob for organizing the Classic Men’s Senior Trio which bowls on Wednesday afernoon The roster of this league includes some local and national star bowlers, sporting averages over 225. There is also Hall Of Fame and former PBA celebri-ties among the membership.

Fun-Time Bowlers Converge On New Trevi Zone For Summer No-Tap Doubles Tournament!

by Judee Wood - Fun-Time Bowling DirectorLAKE ELSINORE—Bowling at Lake Elsinore? Who would

have thought! The Knight family’s vision came true with the July opening of the Trevi Entertainment Center, a 92,000-square-foot conversion of an old K-Mart building located just off I-15 on Mission Trails in Lake Elsinore. When hearing the buzz about a new bowling venue, Fun-Time Bowling Commissioner, Ralph Morton, hit the ground running and was successful in being the first to book a tournament date for a summer “Fun-Time” event. Impressed with 40 beautifully-equipped Brunswick lanes (laid out with 20 on each side), two 4-lane private party rooms, a fully-equipped pro shop, snack and pizza bars, sports bar and arcades all confirmed this would be a great place for the August 3-5 first annual Trevi senior no-tap doubles tournament.

As Fun-Time bowlers entered The Trevi Zone, they were immediately aware that this was not a typical bowling center. Not only were bowlers personally greeted at the front desk, but they found themselves surprisingly surrounded by beautiful Ital-ian/Venetian décor. Bowlers were in awe over the tall marble columns, chandeliers, aquariums, wall art, leather couches and even a scaled-down version of Rome’s famous Fountain of Trevi located in the center of the concourse. Tournament check-in, selling of 50-50 tickets and shirts, distribution of door prize and bowling ball/bag raffle tickets went smoothly thanks to the dili-gent crew of Ruth and Billy Lang, Joan and Jack Sowards, Nancy Morton and Judee Wood.

As three days of bowling began, it was obvious bowlers were anxious and ready to try out the beautiful, new lanes. As pins flew and six 300 scores appeared on the large graphic telescores, congratulations went out to Lee Kuhn who bowled back-to back 300’s (834). More 300 congrats went to Phil Diaz (844), George Kelly (821), Ray Struchen (756) and Bill White (829) while hon-orable mentions went to Phil Diaz for a 298 and Judee Wood for a 297.

The Friday afternoon squad was bowling hot with a high team series (1798) bowled by Ray and Karen Struchen. Coming in second for the day was Larry Shively and Ashley Shively (1778), Kat Christensen and Eduardo Sanchez (1774), Bill and Melba White (1707), Phil Diaz and Lily Jegou (1705) and Judee Wood and Cecile Beldon (1659). Highest scratch series was bowled by Phil Diaz (844).

Saturday morning’s sunshine brought about more smiles as the second day’s bowling began at 10 a.m. Midway through bowling, Commissioner Ralph Morton stopped the bowling for a few minutes while he gave away numerous door prizes to lucky bowlers and called the 50-50 winning ticket numbers. As a side note, even though the drawing is called “50-50,” all monies col-lected from these ticket sales are distributed 100% to the lucky winners making up several very generous prize envelopes.

Heading the top of Saturday’s score sheet was the team of Kat Christensen and Eduardo Sanchez (1785) followed closely by Billy and Ruth Lang (1779), Jack Bigelow and Jeanne Jef-fords (1764), Larry Shively and Ashley Shively (1743), Judee Wood and Cecile Belden (1696) and Red Krieger and Nesu-Mar-tin Galvez (1673). Highest scratch series was bowled by Ash-ley Shively (822). Congratulations to Floyd Clay (741), Luther Goad (718) and Ashley Shively (822) who were the three no-tap 300 scorers for Saturday. Kudos also to honorable mentions Jack Bigelow (298) and Larry Shively (298).

The final day of bowling was once again greeted by hot weather and lots of sunshine. As bowlers gathered around the leader board and noticed how many teams were just pins away from each other, one had to know game plans were in the making as visions of the nice prize fund danced in their heads. Bowling was halted for a few minutes to not only call 50-50 winners, but to give away three bowling balls and three double-roller bags to six lucky winning bowlers.

A recap of Sunday’s bowling mimicked the winning team of Kat Christensen and Eduardo Sanchez (1696) followed by Bill and Melba White (1675), Ida Tagliaferri and Sid Good (1664), Joe and Lynda Phillips (1632), Jack and Lena Grace (1622), Joe Borges and Mahlan Brackett (1595). Congratulations to just one Sunday bowler rolling a no-tap 300, George Kelly (807) with an honorable-mention congrats to Karen Wade (288).

While tournament scores for the three day’s of bowling were being recapped, bowlers were treated to a delightful pizza and salad lunch compliments of Trevi management.

Tournament Winners: The 1st place winning team record-ing the highest series, Ray and Karen Struchen (1798); a very nice 2nd place, Kat Christensen and Eduardo Sanchez (1785) followed very closely by 3rd place, Billy and Ruth Lang (1779) who just edged 4th place, Larry Shively and Ashley Shively by one pin (1778); 5th place, Jack Bigelow and Jeanne Jeffords (1764); 6th place (a familiar name) Kat Christensen and Edu-ardo Sanchez (1744) who just squeaked in by one pin from 7th place, Larry Shively and Ashley Shively (1743); 8th place, Bill and Melba White (1707); 9th place away by 2 pins, Phil Diaz and Lily Jegou (1705); a tie for 10-11th place; Judee Wood and Cecile Beldon (1696) and (once again) Kat Christensen and Edu-ardo Sanchez (1696); 12th place, Bill and Melba White (1675); 13th place just three pins out, Red Krieger and Nesu-Martin Galvez (1673); 14th place, Ida Tagliaferri and Sid Good (1664); 15th place, Judee Wood and Cecile Beldon (1659); 16th place, Joe Borges and Mahlan Brackett (1644) and 17th place to Billy Stewart and George Kelly (1638). Congratulations to all win-ning teams. Good bowling!

The next 50+ senior “Fun-Time no-tap tournament” is just five months away, so be sure to get your tournament entry in early. The dates are January 6-9, 2008 in Laughlin, Nevada at the Riverside Resort and Casino’s Bowling Center. It’s a no-tap doubles tournament, so find a partner and mark your calendar. Single entries are most welcome as partners are always avail-able. There will be free bowling balls and bags given away each day, many door prizes, 50-50 drawings, brackets, side pots and probably some surprises, too. Call Ralph Morton at 619-647-0541 for tournament information or entry form. You can also go to the website and download an entry brochure: http://my.opera.com/rbd

Santa Rosa Says

Goodbye To a Friend

by Joan FeinblumSANTA ROSA—The cha-

pel filled with Family, Friends and Bowlers to say goodbye to a friend. The Pastor started out by asking for one word that could describe our friend.

Voices from around the chapel echoed: Special, Self-less, Role Model, Helping, Giving, Team Player, Non Judgmental, a Friend, a men-tor and the list went on.

Our Friend was Toni Pres-ley. Toni bowled for over 50 years and attended State and National Conventions as a Delegate. She received her award from the California WBA for having bowled in 50 California WBA Champi-onship Tournaments. She also bowled in 48 WIBC Champi-onship Tournaments.

Last year in Sacramento in the 2006 California USBC Women’s State Tournament Toni was a member of the E Division team that won the division. The Team was the 4 Friends, which was composed of Toni, Lou Decker, Elaine Hagin and Joan Feinblum. Toni bowled the high series. This same foursome have been bowling together in the State Tournament for nine-teen years. Toni, Lou and Joan bowled together in 14 WIBC Tournaments.

Toni was a member of the Board of Directors of the Santa Rosa, WBA and the Redwood Empire WBA. She served as Vice President of the Red-wood Empire WBA and the North Bay Association Travel League.

During the last meeting of the California WBA Toni Pres-ley was chosen by the Red-wood Empire WBA to carry its Flag during the Parade of Flags.

She received many awards with her years of bowling in-cluding The REWBA Distin-guished Service to the Game of Bowling. Toni Presley never met a stranger and never turned away from helping a friend in need.

The Bowling World will never forget the loss of our special friend.

8 Stupid Mistakes Most Bowlers MakeAnd How to Correct Them Part 1

Unless you’re a professional bowler, regardless of your aver-age, you’re no doubt making certain specific mistakes…common mistakes, yet usually unrecognized by anyone other than a high level teacher/coach. Even many naturally talented PBA profes-sionals were coached by friends or parents, who may have had little or no coaching training.

Often this has led to habits, which might not be considered “by the book” so to speak, but nevertheless worked well enough to occasionally beat the competition. Sometimes such habits be-came so ingrained in that bowler’s muscle memory, that its very consistency and accuracy allowed it to create a winning style. “If it works, why change it?” is a pretty potent argument, when coming from a winner!

Some examples: The usual “pulling up” at the line tactics of Walter Ray Williams, the almost non existent pushaway of Ja-son Couch, the seemingly too short backswings of a number of leading players, while the stratospheric backswing of Pete Weber goes to the opposite extreme.

But such tactics, while they work for some, nearly always prove to be the exception. That’s why many bowling fundamen-tals as taught by the most successful coaches, are often so simi-lar. Following the laws of physics is wise for the student of this game, because those laws will usually break you before you’ll get away with breaking them! (Incidentally, Walter Ray can stay low and throw the big banana hook when necessary. His versatil-ity allows him to change to virtually any style he chooses, when conditions call for it.)

Anyway, following are some of the mistakes we’ll discuss today:

Mistake OneThrowing Harder to Create More Ball Speed

Throwing the ball harder to gain speed causes loss of both accuracy and control. Result? Too much twisting of the bowl-ing shoulder, thus mis-aligning the swing and release. Muscling the downswing often creates a second problem for many…the backswing gradually gets shorter and shorter, forcing a muscled downswing just to maintain ball speed. There goes accuracy…and score! Worse yet, the reverse is also true, because a deliber-ate effort to slow the ball down by attempting to retard the swing causes “reverse muscling”, which is just as bad.

However, speed control is still possible for the bowler who doesn’t have the time to practice as much as the pros. Some prac-tice devoted to just this single effort is definitely necessary.

But an attempt to create more backswing by pulling the ball higher is just as counterproductive, because muscling it back-wards also mis-aligns the shoulder. Therefore, it’s a must to elim-inate both muscling and reverse muscling of the ball!

Sure, there are some pros who get away with a short back-swing. Hall of Famer Marshall Holman sometimes used as many as seven steps and the longest slide on tour to deliver his pow-erful sphere…and to gain some ball speed, despite that short backswing. But a seven step approach isn’t practical for most bowlers.

Two Cures1 – One way is to help the ball a bit at the downswing’s bot-

tom, just into the release itself, with the hand…but only with the hand! This is referred to as “Hitting the ball!” It allows the down-swing to be in a “waiting” mode, until the ball’s gravity brings the arm down…then, at the release point, to propel the ball forward with only the hand, thus avoiding the muscled downswing.

But most bowlers create this “help” too early in the down-swing, creating that very downward “muscle” we’re trying to avoid. My students have always been amazed at how much extra explosive pin action results from a non-forced downswing. (Just watch Pete Weber’s downswing. You can actually see him wait-ing for the ball’s gravity to initiate it, before he “hits” it at the bottom!)

The first thing the speed control wannabe must realize is that a one mile per hour or so speed increase is a lot. Two m.p.h. is huge! Next, that there’s only a tiny difference in elapsed time between a big swing and a short one, because the bigger swing develops more speed at the bottom (just like a kid on a swing). This means that a bigger, yet unforced, ball weighted “free arm” downswing actually develops more ball speed with less effort…and with more accuracy and consistency…since the shoulder need not move, but merely swivel, like a hinge, as it should!

So that “dangling” downswing, with the arm almost limp, is the answer.

2 - Another way to increase backswing height and ball speed is the method used by Pete Weber and some others whose small-er size demands some inventiveness. That is to do the approach with the balance arm pointed forward instead of the usual side-ways. That lets the bowling shoulder turn backward (open) so that the backswing automatically goes higher. Then, on the last step, quickly switching arms…in other words, pulling the bal-ance arm back to the side again, which causes a quick realign-ing of the shoulders, thus pulling the bowling arm into a speedy downswing, but without muscling the ball! Presto! More ball speed.

But be aware that this technique requires a lot of practice, because it’s necessary to get the bowling shoulder realigned with your mark at the exact instant of release.

Mistakes 2, 3 and 4A Pushaway That’s Too Low, Too Slow And Too ShortI realize I’ve just listed three mistakes in one headline. That’s

because they usually go together. Here they are:Too Low

An effective backswing height must begin with a reasonable pushaway height, or the ball won’t go back up far enough with-out being yanked. Remember, if you have to muscle the ball back to get it high enough, you’ll usually also muscle it down.

The CureSo again, (like the kid on a swing) the pushway should finish

with the ball high enough in front of you, for that backswing to be gravity actuated. Actually, the height of the pushaway should be about the same as the desired height of the backswing. This allows the ball’s gravity to initiate the backswing without help or hindrance from the muscles. Just visualize a bar in front of the ball, then pushing the ball just over that bar as you push it forward. A great way to overcome the low, backswing problem without yanking.

Too SlowThis error is made by the vast majority of bowlers. It destroys

both timing and the free armswing. An overly slow pushaway is usually caused by a first step that’s too slow (second step for you 5 steppers). Too slow a step means too slow a pushaway…the two go together. Many bowlers do this deliberately because they don’t want to be guilty of “rushing” the line. Wrong, because the bowler’s timing remains as far off as it was before. In modern bowling the last step actually should finish a bit ahead of the ball if the proper release point is to be achieved!

Worse, such an overly slow, restricted pushaway usually causes an equally restricted backswing. That not only shortens it too much, but also destroys any hope of the needed free arm backswing height.

The CureThe good news is that bowlers guilty of this can correct it

with reasonable practice time. The cure for this slow motion problem is simple, but not always immediately accepted by some bowlers…until they see the results…then they usually become fans. By merely speeding up the pushaway itself, the accompa-nying step also speeds up, and presto! Both problems are quickly solved. Yes, it takes some practice to speed up that pushaway habit, but it does work.

Now, check out the following part without stopping, because as I said, these three parts of the pushaway go together.

Too ShortWhat’s too short in a pushaway? Simple…when it is shorter

than the accompanying step. That’s because once that step passes the ball, your body’s weight makes it difficult to keep from re-stricting the first part of the backswing. There’s that old bugaboo of the reverse muscled backswing again.

Another way in which the pushaway can be too short is when the elbow is bent too much at ball’s farthest forward point. The more bent the elbow is at pushaway’s end, the more “ bunched up” the bicep muscle will be…and the more bunched up that muscle is, the more restricted the backswing!

The CureFirst, either shorten the step, lengthen the pushaway, or both.

Actually, the step should usually be shorter anyway, because it’s quicker, thus helping your timing, plus avoiding the deadly mus-cled backswing (see above).

Second, execute a longer, straighter arm pushaway. You’ll notice immediately that the straighter the arm becomes, the more your bicep flattens out, so it can’t restrict the weight of the ball as it gravitates into its backswing. Those who have never expe-rienced the sensation of freedom in he arm as the ball’s weight takes over the backswing, may be surprised at just how easy it is. I’ve had to talk more than one bowler into it, because at first they couldn’t believe that anything so effortless could actually get results…until they saw the results, that is!

The Bottom LineKeep in mind that it’s virtually impossible to successfully

dedicate yourself to a consistent winning game without first hav-ing committed the fundamentals of execution to automatic re-sponse status.

Part 2 (the last 4 mistakes) next month. A couple of these may surprise you.

Today’s Rolfism: Fundamentals are critical! Without them, no amount of advanced bowling technique will work.

Ralph Morton FunTime Bowling No Tap Doubles Tournament

Riverside Lanes, Laughlin, NV.by Brad Domes - [email protected]

LAUGHLIN—Success just seems to follow this semi-annu-al tournament. Normally, high temperatures in Laughlin keep many of the regular bowlers away but a record summer crowd of 204 bowlers from around the west came to enjoy the friendly confines of Riverside Lanes in Laughlin, NV. The team behind Ralph Morton has a lot to do with drawing more bowlers each tournament with their hard work and attention to suggestions for improvement from those who attend. Riverside Lanes’ crew also keeps the tourney running smoothly. Please refer to the end of this article for support personnel from both groups.

The setup for this tournament was slightly different then in past tourneys. Squads were divided into two groups with team to-tals 324 and under forming Division 1 and 325 and above form-ing Division 2. Sunday’s squad A competed with Wednesday’s squad B while Monday’s squads A & B and Tuesday’s squads A & B formed their own competition. Players were allowed to en-ter alternate squads with any partner. The division format was a great success as you will see by Bob & Kitty Browne’s results.

Colorado’s Ken Noble showed the way by shooting a “per-fect” 300 as well as a three game no tap 900 series. He also chimed in with two other no tap 300’s for a tournament total of six. Congratulations are in order. Another milestone was also achieved by 85 year old E.J. Johns shooting a no tap 300 game in the Wednesday competition. There is hope for all of us. Other 300 no tap games were recorded by Jake Billinger, Bob Browne, Ed Burke, Phil Diaz (2), Jack Grace, Lee Kuhn, Chuck Palm-er (3), John Potts, Jeff Sanders (2), Mike Schoonover (2), Pat Taranto, Bob Wester (2), Leslie Williams, Dan Woodend (2) and Jerry Worrell.(2). No 300’s from the distaff side.

Sun/Wed: Division 1: Optioning to bowl in both squads Bob (865) & Kitty (820) Browne finished ahead of themselves for a first & second place finish. Marge & Ernie (934) Rymer man-aged to grab the third place spot. Division 2: Tony Magneta (790) teamed with Dan Woodend (911) to win this division. Second place went to Brad Domes (800) & Jerry Wood (863) as they edged Jim Evanchak (805) & Richard Pecoraro (855) by three pins. Division 1&2 notables: Bill Lang (296,298-916), John Potts (902), Sixto Santos (888), Tag Tagleaferre (865), Francis Falcone (862), JoAnn Burke (829), Amelia Cabral (816), Jim Ha-nohano (279), Joyce Dalton-Jensen (868), Jeri Ziebarth (867) & Gloria Zuckerman (858).

Monday: Division 1: Recording the team tournament high for all squads and divisions of 1845 Bob (929) & Kitty (916) Browne easily rolled to another first place finish. Overwhelmed, but undaunted, Bill (904) & Melba (865) White finished a strong second with the team of Barbara (961) & Theodore Risch wrap-ping up third. Division 2: Orville Kline (886) & Phil Diaz (875) finished well in front being chased by the second place team of Farris Dosh (866) & Clarence Haseyama (841) who fought off Chuck (819) & Nita (861) Palmer who finished third. Oth-ers: Jake Billinger (942), Chuck Palmer (921), Ed Young (900), Joan Sowards (871), Rosemary Beaudikofer (866), Les Williams (888), Andy Gagliano (296, 862), Gisele Williams (851), Jim Evanchak & Brad Domes (297), Dennis Suntum (290), Doris Hansen (918), Jayne Salgado (850).

Tuesday: Division 1: If you think you have read this before you are right. The Browne team again finished first giving them a trifecta. However, they were not finished as they snuck in for third place as well giving them three first places, a second and a third for the entire tournament. Another familiar team Bill (904) & Melba White managed to squeeze into second place. Division 2: As mentioned previously Ken Noble’s (909) perfect no tap 900 series carried him & Liz Noble (782) to first place. Only 11 pins behind for second was the team of Chuck (937) & Nita Palmer who squeaked by Donald (830) & Erika (840) Johnson by 10 pins. Overachievers: Phil Diaz (899), Bill Burmeister (881), Roger Moisant (290, 918), Nero Desahagn (853), Ray-mond Smith (881), Christine Alba (843), Arline Arendt (852), Joan Blasi (835), Darnell Owens (841), Igmidio Generillo (878), Pam Foster (837), Marilyn Young (861).

Special match: Each tournament between the Tuesday squads a special match between Riverside’s best and some of FunTime’s best are showcased.

The crowd enjoyed watching Riverside’s Brian & Dustin Markowitz and Charlie Emmons go against Ralph Morton, Gary Anderson & Oscar Jones. Let’s say that the crown remains at Riverside. A great show of talent and sportsmanship for every-one.

Kudos: Many thanks to Ralph Morton’s staff for making this another successful tournament. Hard working crew consisted of Brad & Lucy Domes, Ruth & Billy Lang, Chuck & Nita Palmer, Joan & Jack Sowards, Judee & Jerry Wood. Special thanks to Nancy Morton for her patience working her first tournament as Ralph’s new bride. Congratulations to both of them.

Riverside Lanes, under the tutelage of Brian Markowitz, manager Charlie Emmons’ staff of Dustin Markowitz, Sarah Consenza and special coordinator Mollie Bradley, spared no ef-fort to keep the ball rolling.

ARCADIA—Bowling Square was the host and long time ABTA Member Roger Viernes was “The Man” as he won his 4th ABTA Title in fine style fi-nally downing the top seed Vuong Do in the title game to take home a tidy $2,200.

Our return to Bowling Square saw 194 entrants enter and produce nice cut scores of +61 (men) and + 16 for our ladies to make it to the semis. Also added were Super Seniors, Janice Meloon, Joe Tyler and Rico Cayton to the field.

Leading the Semis was “Red Hot” Voung Do at a +134. Not far behind was “Iron Mike” Barcenas at +124. Do would sit out and be able to bowl the title game. Barcenas to enter in round two of the single elims (top 16). It took a +33 to make the sweet 16 single elims finals, and that included 3 women.

The Bowlers took to the lanes. In the first round single elims losing were Reina Flores, Simon Ro-jas, Speedy Bryant, Anto-nio Chui, Jenny Le, Natalie Perenishko and Romy Ca-jucom. They got checks of $100 in 10-16th place.

In round two being eliminated were Mike Bar-cenas, Marvin Crowder, Holden Au, and Domi-nic Tambio. They cashed in 6-9th places and $110 each.

Round three had Robert Robinson best an injured James Abilar 223-163. Roger Viernes bombed Lawrence Lee 255-206, so James and Lawrence were 4th and 5th with fine bowl-ing and $110 each. Roger and Robert to meet for the right to bowl Do for the title. In this game Robin-son led early but finished in a funk with opens in frames 4-6-7 & 9. Viernes prevailed 190-164 so Rob-inson was 3rd at Bowling Square and Roger off to the title game vs Vuong Do.

The title game was set and the horses were paid! Viernes paid $35 for every-one who had him at the $5.00 fun bets. We would see who would become the latest Champion. Voung elected to lead off, and in a tense title game both were clean through 5 frames. Do opened in the 6th and Rog-er began his title run with strikes in frames 6-7-8 and both clean the rest of the

way. Final result Viernes 214/223 to Do 179/208. A great performance by a great guy and a fine bowl-er, and a true gentleman. Title #4 was well-deserved! Congrats Rogerl!

Great bowling also by Vuong Do a Champion who could have won it on this nightl! He is a great bowler and a fine young man. Great bowling! The same to Robert Robinson in third place.

Tourney Hi Qualifiers were Simon Rojas +146 for the men and Jenny Le led the ladies at +50. They will get paid entries.

Voung Do again? Yes as he eliminated the field in the 3-6-9 roll off and got the first three 9’s or bet-ter going for $900 missed right a bit leaving the 3-7. We will go for $1,000 this week at Premiere Lanes. He got a $50 consolation for beer money:-).

The Match Game was not Matched at 251. We will go for an estimated $2,150 Match Game at Premiere this Saturday.

Match Series worth $2,166 was Matched at a 457 by two of our fin-est members Youna Yun

and Ben Hurtado. They got $1,063 each for their fine bowling. We will esti-mate the Series at $250 this week.

Champion Roger Viernes from L.A. and one of our finest members for many years. He is most deserv-ing and used a Roto Grip Venus drilled by Missiion Hills Bowl. He is married to Leah also a past Cham-pion and sons Jon Jon and Ton Ton. He thanks family for support and Karl and Rusty for the fine drilling at Mission, and the ABTA for a great tournament.

Vuong Do hails from Westminster, and used an Awesome Hook drilled by Ben Mach ABTA Member at Westminster Lanes. He thanks the ABTA for a great tournament, Ben for the fine drilling and girlfriend Julie who is so supportive and to ABTA member Minh Dang whom he let down.

Robert Robinson is from Rancho Cucamonga, and used a Pyro drilled by Tony Robbins at Pins and Needles Pro Shop, thanks to Tremaine Robins and Gerald Baaker for support and the ABTA Staff.

We had several new members at Bowling Square and first time cash-ers were Jenny Le, Law-rence Lee, Antonio Chui, Holden Au, William Au,

Fred Smith Wins Third ABT Championship at Cal BowlLAKEWOOD—Fred Smith won his third Amateur Bowlers

Tour (ABT) championship at Cal Bowl on Saturday, August 4, 2007 during our one-day 4-game Beat-the-Board tournament. Fred bowled in our 4PM squad and shot games of 264, 286, 217 and 276 with handicap or a 1043 series on his way to winning the $500 1st place prize plus $1000 from the progressive pot. Bob Milinkovich of Stanton had a fine day shooting a 1015r game handicap series to finish in second place for $250 dollars. In third place was Roger Wrase of Torrance. Roger shot a 981 handicap series for $175.

Our newest champion, Fred Smith is 44 and is married to El-len and has a son, Matthew. Fred has been bowling for about 12 years and about 8 years with ABT. Fred has a 300 game and 790 series to his credit. He was using an Ebonite Total NV drilled by Ramon Torres at the pro shop at Carter Bowl for the win this weekend. Fred wanted to thank Ellen and Matt for their love and support and to Dr. Karrik for fixing his knee after a recent injury. Fred also wanted to thank Cal Bowl for hosting the tournament this weekend, and the Amateur Bowlers Tour-Orange County Branch staff and Directors for running an outstanding tourna-ment.

Roger Wrase was the winner of the optional 4-game Scratch Sweeper and $120 with an 897 scratch series. We have had many positive comments about the optional 4-game Scratch Sweeper, and will continue to run this optional Scratch Sweeper at each tournament.

The Mystery Game Pot of Gold game and score were drawn after our final squad. Game #4 was the game drawn, and 275 (possibly good for $300) was drawn for the first chance. The second chance score of 174 (possibly good for $150) and third chance score of 181 (possibly good for $75) were then drawn. David Smitson was the winner of the second chance having shot a 174 in the fourth game during our 12:30 squad. Remember, the Mystery Pot of Gold is available to all members (Classic and Masters) and only costs $5.

The ABT staff and membership would like to thank the man-agement and staff at Cal Bowl for hosting our tournament. Our next scheduled event will be on Saturday, August 11th, 2007 at Del Rio Lanes. This will be a Classic and Masters Combined 4-game beat the board tournament. All members (Classic and Masters) are eligible. Handicap will be 80% of 225 for this tour-nament. Squad times are at 12:30, 2, and 4PM. We will offer $100 sidepots on each squad with just 20 entrants, as well as optional brackets for each squad. First place will be $800 with 100 entries for only a $55 entry fee. First place with full Pro-gressive will offer an estimated 1st place prize of $1,500 with 100 entries.

We hope to see you Saturday, August 11th at Del Rio Lanes.

The bowling center is located at 1060 West San Bernadino Road, Covina, Ca. 91722. There we will establish teams and set up our rules for the new season.

The league is open to deaf and hard of hearing bowlers. We usually bowl twice a month on Sundays at 1pm and bowl 4 games. Last year 6 teams of 3 person teams. We would like to see more teams this year, “the more the merrier.”

If you are interested in joining the nation’s oldest deaf travel league, please come to the meeting. Those who come to the meeting will have the best chance to be on a team. If you are unable to come to the meeting because of prior arrangements, Please call or fax our secretary-treasurer Connie Marchione at 818.785.1478 or email the president Ed Abakumoff at [email protected] and let them know that you are interested. Be sure and let them know your highest 2006-2007 book average if you have not bowled in our league in the past. - ED Abakumoff

SCJBA Awards Banquet-The awards banquet for the JAT and GLAJAS 2006 AND

2007 seasons is set for Saturday, October 20th at 11:30 a.m. at Dave and Busters, Westfield Santa Anita, Arcadia. Should be a fun afternoon of awards, prizes and games! For those of you who attended the 2005 Banquet it will be the same setup- and everyone had a great time! Someone keep Dino away from the cheeseburgers so we can all have some…

Old Timers (or Alumni, if you prefer)-The JAT is planning a Grand Reunion event for Sunday, Oc-

tober 21st. We are inviting all JAT Alumns to come out and com-pete in a scholarship fundraising event and bowl with the current crop of JAT juniors. It will be a fun event and a great chance to come out and see some of your old friends! I’m giving you 2 ½ months to get ready so dust off those Linds and let’s see you on the 21st!

Again Old Timers, Was JAT Good to You?-Do you have fond memories of your times bowling juniors

with your friends? The JAT as well as several other junior bowl-ing organizations are feeling the crunch from increased lineage and declining membership. We want to continue to provide scholarship funds for our kids who choose to further their educa-tion. You can help!! Log on to www.socaljba.org where you can make a tax-deductible donation to the Southern California Junior Bowling Association. 100% of the funds go directly to college scholarships! Every bit counts- a few dollars goes a long way! How about just dropping $20 to the cause? If enough alums give a little each we can help a lot of junior bowlers pay tuition and books. We hope you will help!

Who’s Hot-Congratulations to Samantha Jimenez and Devin Bidwell

on some fine bowling back east representing SoCal well on the lanes. Congrats to Farm Clubber Kevin Jones on winning the Farm Club Invitational- we’ll be looking forward to having you join us next season!

JAT Invitational-The JAT Invitational is scheduled for Saturday, August 25th

at Canoga Park Bowl. Remember- only the top-12 bowlers are eligible for the event, however we will take alternates to the field if the top-12 are not available. The Invitational is worth double points and bonus money so it could determine the Bowler of the Year race as it’s close going down to the wire. Go to www.bowl-jat.org to check the updated points listings.

What’s Coming Up-The JAT makes its way to Brunswick West Covina this

weekend, August 12th for the Tournament of Non-Champions. Champs you rest up for the Tournament of Champions next Sun-day, August 19th at AMF Midtown Lanes. We follow with the JAT Invitational on Saturday, August 25th at Canoga Park Bowl. Everyone get ready to hit the lanes as the 2007-2008 season will kick off Sunday, September 9th. Updates 2007-08 dates are list-ed at www.bowljat.org/Schedule.html. You can start e-mailing your schedule conflicts to [email protected] immediately so we can adjust our dates!

W.C. Jr. Elims Part II

by David GordonNORWALK – Welcome

back to Jr. Elims – Part II at Keystone Lanes. This past Saturday, we concluded our nine session qualifying round with quite a number of stats up for grabs, including 1st place. The conditions were typical Keystone, nothing extremely difficult – yet no givens as well.

The high bowler for the session was Jimmy Schmitzer with a very nice 879 series that included games of 267 and 247. Joining Jimmy in the 800 club is Albert Fernandez with 238-227/832. Way to show it could be done, gentlemen. Addition-al highs came in from Andrew White 201-206-786, Daniel Munoz 209/736, Amanda Neil 232/723, and Brandon Roque 201. Now normally I don’t re-port make-up/pre-bowl games, but with first place on the line and second place team mem-bers Schmitzer and White go-ing after it, I feel compelled to give these last two reportables. Holding a lead in first place of only 12 points, J.D. Pelow pre-bowl with a 226/805 and team-mate Ryan Aguilar pre-bowl-ing with 254/791. Schmitzer and White put in a valiant ef-fort but came up just short by 4 points to take the lead.

Therefore our qualifying round ends with team Giant

& A Circus Midget (Pelow/Aguilar) taking 1st with 143 points and They Can Be Dead-ly (Schmitzer/White) with 2nd place at 140 points. Team High Series goes to Pelow/Aguilar at 1846 (2-person team, 4 games, wow!) and High Game to They Can Be Deadly at 478. Individually, Aguilar (941) takes HS, while Pelow take HG with his per-fect 300. Jasmine Morales captures the Girls HS with 848 and Amanda Neil has HG at 232. The match point cham-pions is Pelow (27 points) and a tie for the girls (Morales & Neil) with 16 points each.

More importantly, here are top six to advance to match play for the boys. Pelow (+551), Aguilar (+196), Schmitzer (+44), White, Fer-nandez, and Munoz. The girls have already qualified.

Now when combined with the eight boys that advanced to match play from Part I, here is how they rank: Kevin Jones (7947), Preston Fukumizu (7796), Pelow (7751), Eric Milne (7515), Aguilar (7396), Mark Curtis (7386), Schmitzer (7244), Joey Marino (7184), Eddie Sayles (6999), White (6789), Fernandez (6649), Andy Betancourt (6619), Mi-chael Gaylor (6547) and Mu-noz (6444). The alternates are: Justin LaMere (6351), Brandyn Roque (6126) and Doug LaMere (5988). The format will be seven match play games each Saturday,

with a top five finals. For the ladies, they are

seeded as follows: Morales (6715), Kim Ferdnance (6637), Neil (6143) and a Vacant (blind average of 175). Your format is four match play games and a top two finals.

Alright bowlers, parents and friends – there you have the entire summer to-date. All match play bowlers need to confirm your intentions of bowling the two-week match play round. Match play begins this coming Saturday (August 11th @ 12:30); please check-in at 12:00 noon. You can RSVP me at 310-665-9536, 626-292-2554, or [email protected].

We will distribute the Part II qualifying round awards just before match play begins. Also remember, that the dress code is a little tighter for match play as we will be spread out over 18 lanes. Boys slacks (no baggies, multi-pocket cargo pants), girls skirt, shorts or skorts. All bowlers are to be in a collared bowling shirt with their name embroidered on the back. Get plenty of rest, some practice and I’ll see you at Keystone Lanes on Saturday.

Frankly, Bellinder Is Best In Rocky Marsh Doubles

by Joy McGregorANAHEIM—Frank Bellinder knows his “stuff” and can we say, “Is

very ‘Frank’ about it?” Ya, we can! Frank is such a natural bowler and strokes the ball with the greatest of ease. His Friday morning outing was very pleasurable not only for Frank, but all the rest of us bowlers; a bowl-ing clinic for free!! Frank tossed games of 234-234 and WOW - 290 to score 758 and then added a 247 to record a league-leading series at 1,005. Fantastic bowling Frank!

Easy-going E.J. Rogers was in the 900 Club, again.... even with his sub par 168 first game. He quickly got into the “zone”, stroking 738 for the final three with games of 224-267 and 247 to post a very fine 905.

Resident “Super Sub” Tony Hale was in his striking mode once again and bordered on perfection in his very first game. A VERY subborn, double-nasty, 10-pin weebled and wobbled but wouldn’t fall down. He had to settle for a 299 and a great 898 4-gamer. Very thrilling to watch Tony!

More HOT scores: Bob Gosnell 239-894, Terry Brent 234-881, Tony Chaco 226-867, Alan Bloom 224-864, Ron Corona, Jr. 236-855, Marie Barbush 222-832, Ron Marcus 215-815, Ryan Robison 237-813, Tony Angulo 235-805, Lloyd Thierry 236, Hong Kha 225, Roy Sager 221, Joy McGregor 213, Gene Plotnick 213, Ron Douglass 210, Al Lara 209, Or-lando Vanegas 208, Roberta McNaught 205, Ronny Thompson 204, Rey Ortiz 204, Diane Salinas 204, Ed Signorino 203, Bob Fulton 202, David McNaught 201, John Phillips 201 and Fred Voysey 200.

The dog daze of summer are a-windin’ down and with only two weeks remaining before sweeps, we have two teams (#4 & #7) tied for first place and any one of six teams could take 2nd or 3rd place. Nice tight race to the finish! Try to stay cool but be HOT in your bowling. Until next week...

SAN BERNARDINO — Now is the time for the bowlers here at Del Rosa Lanes to make plans for our Mixed Doubles Last Chance No-Tap tournament. The date is Sunday, August 19 at 10:00 a..m. Entry fee which includes sidepots is $40. Get your partner and give us a call to reserve your spot.
