The hisTory up Till ToDay

the history of the Deaconess foundations school of nursing

it all started in 1863 in the town of frederiksberg near Copenhagen. inspiration came from the royal family.

princess (later Queen) louise of Denmark (1817-1898) was the founder of the Danish Deaconess foundation. she was inspired by the Deaconess institution of Kaiserswerth on the rhine in germany (a community of lutheran nursing sisters). ever since, the Danish regent has been the protector of the Danish Deaconess foundation.

miss louise Conring (1824-1891) became the first deaconess in Denmark. Queen louise encouraged her to study abroad at different deaconess institution.

it was clearly a success as miss Conring was ordained a deaconess in Kaiserswerth 1863. subsequently, she became the first superintendent of the Danish Deaconess foundation.

The nursing education in the first decades resembled an apprenticeship, which was mainly composed of practical training.

The sisters, however, succeeded in transforming nursing into a respectable line of work for women by setting high standards of care.

in 1879 the theoretical dimension was for the first time introduced into the nursing curriculum through the efforts of superintendent sister sophie Zahrtmann (1841-1925), who was trained as a deaconess in strasbourg, france.

in 1910 the nursing curriculum was reformed in accordance with the Danish red Cross and the Danish nurses organization.

ever since, the Danish Deaconess foundations school of nursing has adhered to the educational and legislative reforms, which have pertained to Danish nursing education in general, but has continued to set the best standards of nursing care and nursing education.

We are educated to be proud…proud of our profession and that we as nurses can make a difference. pernille sChulTZ, sTuDenT

The students from Deaconess School of Nursing distinguish themselves by their interest, initiative, and strong theoretical foundation.

These students emphasize the importance of caring, presence, and professional ethics in their encounters with the patients…

We believe, that it is related to the nursing school, where they focus on the individual students and this in turn rubs off in a positive way on the manner the students approach their patients and colleagues. CeCilie rasmussen, CliniCal eDuCaTion CoorDinaTor, freDeriKsBerg hospiTal

The best academic results

The school has the best completion rate, and the highest graduation grades of any Danish nursing school. The education program at the nursing school is also highly respected among health institutions in the community for its high academic and clinical care standards.

Ideology and religion

although The Deaconess foundation remains a religious institution, the nursing school today is a secular institution with students and staff from various religious and cultural backgrounds.

The basic ideology of the school today is still related to the symbolism of The good samaritan, which is respect and compassion for the all members of society, especially towards the most needy.
