ObjectivesThe course unit Studio 3 is, together with Projects Studio 3, the apotheosis in your development into a professional studio technician. Inrecent years, you have developed numerous skills that you are now learning to use in a professional practice. You will further deepen

yourself in sound, instruments and acoustics and in more technically complex study situations, and thus grow as a professional in thefield of recording techniques, mixing techniques and mastering. You will broaden your view on music and the applications of music insociety. You no longer just walk the path of pop and rock music and its translation into a studio setup, but experiment with other formsof expression: art, radio plays, video, music production, classical music, jazz, 3D audio and so on. You realize these creativeproductions in a phased way, project-based, starting with a design, concrete question or well-founded problem analysis and ending witha concrete result. You think and act stragically, you motivate your choices, you work result oriented and planned, you are stress

resistant and take responsibility. You research and integrate new or alternative recording techniques and technological innovations andyou are open to musical developments.

You are always amazed and look at the world with big eyes. Recording, mixing and producing music is your core business. Art, cultureand society are the inspiration to feed your creativity. You make personal choices about what makes sense in order to create ahigh-quality, artistic story.

At the end of the course you can express in word and deed which working methods, technologies used, production methods, communication, ... are useful for achieving a high-quality artistic product.

A summary of the learning results can be found in the study guide.

Learning contentsMixing: We're going to delve deeper into different styles of music and also focus on other music genres than pop and rock.

The technical parts we pay specific attention to are the build-up of pressure and the general loudness of a song, the spatial aspect of amix and the use of compression as a musical extension.

We pay a lot of attention to learning to listen and judge music mixes.

ITB: The goal is for the student to be able to deal with this relatively easy and accessible way of working qualitatively andprofessionally.

Recording: In recording we try to get away from the purely technical connection of micro's and equipment.

We try to put ourselves in the shoes of a musician as a technician so that a musician can grow above himself during the recordingsession.

We try to activate the communication skills of our students and teach them how certain communication and attitudes can improve aproduction. This is an individual quest for each student that we try to guide and, where necessary, steer positively.

Learning to use microphones and the acoustics of a room as part of a total sound rather than as an individual converter of a particularinstrument.

Complex audio: The music industry is making a metamorphosis towards audio over IP and further digitization. We are also leavingmore and more stereo and mixing in surround and 3D audio. In this section we want to go into these innovations thoroughly and let thestudent think about the pros and cons of these ways of working.

Mastering: Learning the basics of mastering and through a few personally guided exercises the students take their first steps in thispart of the music industry.

You will broaden your view on music and the applications of music in society. You no longer just walk the path of pop and rock musicand its translation into a live setup but experiment with other forms of expression: classical music, coorporate, musical, immersiveaudio, ... .

You will independently search for a frame of reference for thinking up system concepts in function of different types of live contexts. Youinvestigate how certain system choices can influence the experience of an audience. You make analyses of the acoustics of a space,

of different sounds and sound sources within this space and their underlying relationships. Based on the insights gained, you candevise, interpret, set up and operate complex sound systems.

You realize these creative productions in a phased way, project-based, starting with a design, concrete question or well-foundedproblem analysis and ending with a concrete result. You think and act strategically, you motivate your choices, you are result-orientedand planned, you are stress-resistant and take responsibility. You can set up, adjust and use analogue and digital mixing desks and monitor desks to achieve optimal hall and stage balance infunction of musical performance practice. You detect technical errors in a sound system and correct them to ensure reliable and optimalsound reproduction. During the projects you always take into account the safety regulations, legislation and can identify risks. Based

on the insights gained, you can devise, interpret, set up and operate complex sound systems in real professional situations.

You realise these productions and projects in a phased manner, project-based, starting with a design, concrete question orwell-founded problem analysis and ending with a concrete result. You think and act strategically, you take into account the expectationsof the work field, clients, musicians, ... You motivate your choices, you work in a result-oriented and systematic way, you are

stress-resistant and take responsibility.

You will learn to finish a music production in a primitive stage into a unique whole. You plan the productions in time and space, make an analysis of the spaces and required material, take into account the available budgets and take care of the communication withmusicians and an external or internal client. You immerse yourself in different musical styles and their performance practice,

instruments and sound image and are responsible for a technical translation into a live event. You think and act strategically, youmotivate your choices, you are result-oriented and planned, you are stress-resistant and take responsibility.

You realize a production in all phases that apply to the development of a live show. From different roles and functions you thinkcreatively in dealing with sound. You do not limit yourself to pop and rock music but broaden your horizons to other music styles andshow forms such as: classical music, coorporate, musical, ... You research and integrate new and alternative ways of soundreinforcement and you are open to musical developments.

At the end of the course you will be able to express in word and deed which working methods, technologies used, production methods, communication, ... are useful for achieving a high-quality artistic product that meets international standards.

ObjectivesThe music industry is about more than just performances and streams. All creative expressions, from sleeve layouts, photos to T-shirts,have a distinct economic value. Music is also 'synchronized' with film and advertising. There are rights to recordings but also to

composing itself. Artists also become 'brands' that are literally filed and monetized. All these matters fall under the term IP (intellectualproperty). This practicum helps you on your way to unravel and dissect the jumble of rights, which is immaterial and invisible.

You can 'market' these rights and collect them in a practical way. You can negotiate all kinds of licenses and understand thedomain-specific language of collective management societies. You are able to do 'incometracking'. You can apply common rates andpractices. You can also register the artist as a trademark. In short, this practicum groups together the various IP topics that havealready been covered during the entire curriculum and prepares you for the practical elaboration of these in function of his professionalcareer. The practical will be given on campus but also on location at important partners such as SABAM, SIMIM and PLAYRIGHT.

A summary of the learning outcomes can be found in the study guide.

Learning contentsA. How do I access rights for :

1. the music author and publisher (publisher)

2. the musicians and the label in case of a sound recording

3. the different authors, actors, audiovisual production house or film company

B. How can we file a trademark.

C. How to deal economically with the expressions of other creative people such as web designers, photographers, layouters etc.

ObjectivesIn multidisciplinary teams with members of each discipline ((music, music technology, music management) you work on a project on aproject with a longer term and a more complex planning. You take into account the operation, ideas and individuality of each discipline. You put your acquired competences further into practice, in collaboration with the students from the other disciplines.

You approach the limitations in time and resources in a creative manner and deal with the stress that these limitations bring.

You work according to the principles of project-based work. You divide your project into four phases:

- Design phase (You make a problem analysis and develop a concept.)- Preparation phase (You search in a creative, practical and constructive way for solutions in consultation with your team.)- Implementation phase (You realize your project in good mutual communication with your team.)- Presentation phase (You present the product and process in a transparent and orderly manner and discuss the strengths andweaknesses of the functioning of yourself and your group members within the project.)

A summary of the learning results can be found in the study guide. In multidisciplinary teams you work on projects, together with the twoother disciplines. You get to know the workings, ideas and uniqueness of each discipline (music, music technics, music management).

You incorporate your own skills, in collaboration with and support of students from the other disciplines.

You set up a project and execute it by the principles of a project, using four phases:

— Design phase (You make a problem analysis and develop a concept)

— Preparation phase (You search for creative, practical and constructive solutions in deliberation with your team)— Implementation phase (You create a result in deliberation with your team)

— Presentation phase (You present product and process in a transparent manner and review the strong and weak points of yourproject)

A list of learning outcomes can be found in the study guide.

Learning contentsThere are two modules per semester. For each module, a new project team is put together with different students. In the first semestertraditional teams are composed of musicians, technicians and managers, in the second semester you are stimulated to take on otherroles within your team.

Semester 1

Module 1: Blues

In the first module you return to the early blues and folk traditions with a small team of musicians, managers and technicians. Suffering, melancholy and sadness are central themes and the personal story of a musician from the group forms the basis for the music you

make. You learn to work together in a multidisciplinary team on a song and the image around the song. You make a first small logisticsexercise by making a field recording on location with a minimum of technology.

Module 2: Country

In the second module, you explore the world of country singers and singer-songwriters with a larger team of musicians, managers andtechnicians. Movement, travel, being on the road and homesickness are central themes. More than in the first module, the lyrics arecentral and metaphors and double meanings are introduced into the music as style elements. You are encouraged to work moreconceptually and to be more artistic. This more extensive and technically more complex assignment requires more consultation, planning and logistics organization.

Semester 2

Module 3: Sixties beat / garage

In the third module you will be immersed in the atmosphere of sixties beat and garage. Students from the MUT and MUMspecializations are required to pick up an instrument and step out of their comfort zone. You learn what it means to be part of a band. You learn to work within a set of very strict rules, to make a song, rehearse the song and develope an appropriate image for your band.

Module 4: Punk / (No) Wave

In the fourth module you breathe in punk and wave. Non-conformism and do-it-yourself aesthetics are central themes: you learn to dealwith a limited number of rules and with even greater limitations in resources and time. You choose the composition of your team and

you focus with that team on making a song, recording and rehearsing the song and developing an appropriate image for your band. You learn to organize a show moment within the school environment and to document your project.

CoachingDuring the contact moments you get coaching: you receive feedback on your progress and your strengths and weaknesses. You arechallenged to find solutions on an independent basis, to evaluate and to reflect on your own actions.

You think and act strategically, you take into account the expectations of theclient, you can motivate your choices, you work in a result-oriented and systematic way.

In order to train your collaborationskills you participate in one of the below 4 international songwriting modules:

Module Netherlands, Minerva,

Module Belgium, PXL-music, International week

Module Finland, Tampere

At the beginning of the academic year you will choose 1 module from the 4 modules in which you will work together on location. For themodules in Sweden, the Netherlands and Finland, this means that you will take a trip and work on the songwriting assignments on the
