letter from the publisher

The late, great Robin Williams once said, “Spring is nature’s way of saying: ‘Let’s Party!’”

Allrightythen!

There’s a lot going on in March, so buckle up and enjoy. We start with Ash Wednesday on March 1, which I believe falls on a Wednesday this year ;) I’m really looking forward to Daylight Saving Time, when we spring forward on March 12. It’ll be nice to enjoy a couple more hours of sun in our days. For basketball fans, March Madness begins on the 14th, and, of course, St. Pat-rick’s Day on the 17th, when we can all be Irish for the day. The first day of Spring is March 20, and my Mom’s birthday is on the 25th, which I have to make sure not to forget. Maybe someone can shoot me a text so I don’t blow that one?

Spring is a great time to celebrate life! We live in uncertain times and there’s a lot of crazy things going on in the world today. However, I hope you are enjoying the positive stories and profiles we bring you every month in Cowan Heights Living. We take pride in featuring your families, neighbors, kids, pets and local events. With your support and contribution, we will continue to highlight the very people, businesses, groups and philanthropies that help make this community so special.

It also means a lot to our valued business partners to be in-volved in the publication and the community, so I would ask you to please consider them when a need arises. Let them know you saw their ad in this magazine when you speak with them and please also tell them how much you enjoy reading Cowan Heights Living each month and are grateful for their support.

Thank you,

Scott Dormaier

Exchange Club of Tustin was founded in November 2015. As a 501C3 nonprofit organization, we are a group of members want-ing to give back to the community. We met with the OC Rescue Mission and found out about a new project they were involved in called the Tustin Veteran’s Outpost. The city of Tustin partnered with the OCRM in re-furbishing an 18-apartment building on Newport Avenue. Many individuals and companies came together to help remodel this complex and turn them into beautiful apart-ments for local homeless veterans. The Tustin Veteran’s Outpost ("TVO") opened in July 2016 as a transitional housing program for up to 26 homeless veterans. The program provides tiered services to homeless veterans who are unemployed, underemployed or full-time college students. Military spouses and children also live at the TVO site. The TVO is designed to address the problems faced by homeless veterans, specifically: lack of housing, unemployment or under-employment and poor linkage to community services. Accord-ing to a recent study from USC on the ‘State of the American Veteran’ in Orange County, up to 32% of Orange County's post-9/11 veteran’s transition out of their military service without permanent housing (2015). Another 73% of the County's post 9/11 veterans transition out of their military service without a job (2015). Too often, veterans feel quarantined by their service experiences and struggle to connect in civilian communities. By acting as a hub to connect homeless veterans with veteran net-works, employers, and resources, the Outpost breaks down the walls of isolation. Services for homeless and unemployed veterans include shelter, meals, case management, transition of military experience to civilian skills, career assessment, financial education, recovery support, veteran-specific counseling and community referrals.

Exchange Club Of Tustin And Orange County Rescue Mission Work Together To Help Homeless Veterans

Services for underemployed and full-time student veterans typi-cally include career assessment and housing.

A typical weekday in the program for a homeless, unemployed veteran begins with breakfast, "flying the colors" (flag-raising) at the TVO, then heading to the Village of Hope for case man-agement and wraparound services. To give structure to the day outside of receiving services, veterans give back by assisting in program operations, such as landscaping, kitchen prep, data entry and other tasks as appropriate. Veterans return to the TVO in the evening to eat as a community and participate in the flag-lowering ceremony. At the TVO, veterans have access to a fully-equipped gym, private kitchens, and a supportive staff (live-in Chaplain and a volunteer resident advisor who is also a veteran). Since opening the program in July 2016, we have served 26 vet-erans and military family members, including ten children under the age of 12. In Exchange Club, we feel no Veteran should ever be homeless. Once the apartments were ready to furnish the Exchange Club began their journey. We decided to call our project “Barracks in a Box.” We met with the Tustin Unified School District asking if we could place large boxes in the schools asking parents to donate specific items for these veterans. We needed bedding, pillows, blankets, personal items, hygiene items, and much more. We collected approximately 50 some boxes full of items for our

veterans. We sorted things and made large welcome bins for each veteran as they moved into their new homes. Every vet-eran was given a Barracks in a Box before moving in. Exchange Club held a comedy night to raise funds to purchase all kitchen items for the apartments. Magic Night to purchase four front loading washer and dryers, a Hoe Down BBQ to raise funds for 32 chairs and 10 community room tables and all patio furniture/umbrellas. Vizio donated a 60-inch TV for the community room. We now want to purchase some workout equipment for the Outpost exercise room At this time we have 15 Veterans and 12 family members living at the TVO. Three families have small children, and in September 2016, we had our first baby born at the Outpost, baby Hope. Exchange Club holds monthly BBQ’s for all the veterans at the Outpost. This is a great way for the vets to socialize and we get to know their needs better. We are now accepting donations to help with the operating expenses at the Outpost for our veterans. The OC Rescue Mission has notified us that they are trying to purchase more land next to the Outpost to make a second location for more homeless veterans.

To donate time or money to help with this very worthy cause, email [email protected] or check out www.exchangeclubof-tustin.com and/or www.rescuemission.org

Twice - By Ashby Jones

Blessing One: The family back when, two sons and their mother, Alice, moved to the Cowan Heights community 42 years ago. The boys, Ashby and Blaine, attended Arroyo and Red Hill Elementary, Hewes Junior High and Foothill High where both played varsity baseball. Alice taught locally in Tustin, helping to run what was then called the GATE pro-gram, while their father, Ashby senior, served as president of a freight forwarding company in Los Angeles. Life was wonderful – for a while - and then tragedy struck: Alice passed away in her early thirties as a result of a cerebral hematoma. Their father quit his job in Los Angeles so the boys would not become “latch-key children,” which he had been as a youngster. Dad went to work locally for Merrill Lynch and thus was able to be home to coach and attend as many games as possible during the boys’ baseball years.

Blessing Two: Several years later, their father was blessed yet again. He met his current wife, Laura, who became a teacher as well, teaching French in Orange County High Schools for 26 years and who only recently retired. With Laura, the family expanded to include two daughters, Phoebe and Natalie. Like their brothers, they, too, attended Foothill High where Phoebe became an active member of Foothill’s theatre program, and Natalie played soccer on advanced traveling teams.

Today, Ashby, the older brother, formerly an attor-ney, now a journalist, heads the law bureau at The Wall Street Journal; Blaine, once a professional hy-drologist, followed his passion and became an earth science teacher as well as a teacher of photography and the golf coach at Samueli Academy, a Charter School in Santa Ana. Phoebe, who graduated from Earlham College in 2015 hopes to pursue her passion for the study of religion and literature in graduate school. Natalie just graduated from Cal State Chico and is taking time to sort through her options with the possibility of going to graduate school in media studies. Today Mom is a Site Director at a local ele-mentary school with the LEAP program.

Travel is a mainstay for all members of the family. When teaching, every three years, Laura, who “au paired” in France and studied at the Sor-bonne all while majoring in French literature at Stanford, would take groups of her students to France and surrounding countries. Phoebe, Na-talie and Dad joined the groups and a love of travel, language and history took seed throughout the family. As a result, Phoebe and Natalie have studied abroad -- Phoebe in India and Natalie in Great Britain. Both girls have a deep appreciation of foreign

cultures and the importance of worldwide under-standing. Dad, with his love of writing, feels he might have been born in “Paris at Midnight,” early in the 20th century, when Hemingway and Fitz-gerald roamed its romantic streets. Son, Ashby, has joined Laura and Dad on several trips and has made several on his own. Blaine’s latest adventure was a camping expedition in Iceland where he spent time gathering information and photographs to bring back to his students. The family could not be closer. The boys and girls are truly brothers and sisters. The word “love” barely describes the aura that sheds light on the whole family, including Alice.

Education, freedom to make mistakes and follow one’s passion have been long-held and equally-prized values in the family. Everyone contributes and supports one another when called upon but in the end, decision making is the responsibility of each individual. As a result, the rewards have surfaced as blessings. Blessing Three: Dad, whose novel, "The Angel’s Lamp," was recently published, considers himself the least gifted member of the family. At the same time, he sits in the most-vaunted seat, that of an aging observer, a loving father, a devoted husband and caretaker of memories. He has been blessed beyond description.

Do you have a child with interesting hobbies or passions? Make Grandma proud by nominating him or her as our next Young Acheiver! Email [email protected] for details...

How long have you lived in the neighborhood? I was literal-ly born in our house here - Mom’s a remarkable woman.

Who is in your family? My dad, a car designer, my mom who’s a project manager in high tech and my brother who’s a fifth grad-er at Arroyo.

What school do you attend? I’m a freshman at Foothill High School

What would you like to do when you grow up? I don’t know – haven’t considered it enough – I’m trying to enjoy life now.

What sports and extracurricular activities do you partic-ipate in?Of course, I surf but I also pretend to play to play the guitar and definitely enjoy going to concerts.

How did you get started surfing? I started bodyboarding when I was four. My dad dragged me before dawn down to Newport and I’d show up to school with fin cramps and saltwater dripping out of my nose. I started surfing when I was nine, which was the same, minus the fin cramps.

Tell us something you achieved or some highlights of your experience so far surfing? I compete, but I’m most proud of the drastic improvement from when I started, and the fact that my brother, Clark, and I will paddle out in just about any size surf, anywhere.

Is there something that makes you unique in this activ-ity? Manners in the lineup. In the water, a lot of people can be inconsiderate, taking waves from others, especially younger surfers. I try to provide a better example.

How do you keep a balance between sports, school and other activities in your life? Working my butt off! We’re in cold water at first light at least one school day, often two, a week, and at least twice a weekend. I train another three times a week at Sports Conditioning and Rehabilitation (SCAR) for 90 minutes. At school, my parents enforce A’s, which isn’t easy. I’ve been a vol-unteer counselor at Audubon Society camps and events for years – community outreach.

Name someone you admire. What makes them special and how have they motivated you? Nate Guerriero, of Or-ange, he’s a retired surfboard shaper from the ‘60s and a men-tor. He’s gone out of his way several times to help me shape and fiberglass my first surfboards – not small projects. He’s empathic and selfless, an example for me.

Cowan Heights Living • March 2017 March 2017 • Cowan Heights Living18 19

As early as grade school in Pittsburgh, I found my-self continually drawing or doodling. I didn’t know at that time I would become an artist. Growing up my home was filled with music as my family were all professional musicians. After studying the violin and piano, I settled on tenor sax and that became my passion but I still experimented in art. College and technical school led me to the en-gineering field which I didn’t really enjoy. After serving in the Army I decided to move to California to explore new avenues. I quickly turned to the sales profession. I opened up a retail carpet and drapery business expanding to a chain of six stores here in Orange County. Being my own boss was what I was meant for. All the while I continued my art education. The more I painted the more inventory I collected. People noticed all the paintings around my house and seemed to like my work. So, I joined a gallery in Costa Mesa. I started selling my paintings. Wow! People actually paid money for my art to decorate their home. That was exhilarating! Then some artist friends and I opened up a gallery in Laguna Beach, the art capital of Orange County. Through-out the summer I exhibit at Art A Fair and in the winter I exhibit at the Sawdust Winter Fantasy. Other than portraiture, I also do commissioned paintings. My concentration through the recent years has been on Still Life With a Wine Theme.

Andresident profile

This popular subject has captured the interest of those who love wine and those who love original oil paintings. I carefully arrange the items in my studio and work to capture the image of three-dimensional objects in my paintings. My use of light and color, along with a variety of shapes and textures, draws attention to the familiar subjects bringing those images to life on canvas. I paint in my studio which is in my home in Cowan Heights and Quorum Art Gallery in Laguna Beach, where I exhibit my work. CH resident Evelyn got 11-year-old, long-haired chihuahua, Poquito Ricardo from a breeder in North Carolina, who she found on the internet. He is named after her lawyer and weighs in at a solid nine-and-a-half pounds. Despite his supreme confi-dence and pack leader status in the house, coyotes, owls and hawks are dangers to this cute little guy.

When asked for a funny story about Poquito, Eve-lyn shared, "Our boy is very habitual and likes to do things the same way every day. He has never liked to go to bed at this bedtime, 9 pm. I get his leash out of the drawer and he becomes immobile. I hook him up and he puts on the skids. When we get out back to the grass, he takes forever to "do his thing." He sleeps in his doggy cage in the closet. When I take him in there and close the door, he gets as far away from me as possible. I reel him in, with his tail tucked in, rock him, kiss him and put him in his cage telling him he is a good dog and I love him. I look in his sad eyes and leave him for the night. He is my guilt master!"

Welcome to the Loire Valley, France, right here in Cowan Heights. In 1998, Mike and Sajee Lekawa bought this incredible 6,000 sq. foot home fashioned after a French country estate. They moved here with 1 baby looking for more space and great schools. Immediately they built a guest suite over the garage for Sajee’s Mom. They welcomed another daughter to the family as well as adding an incredible drive-way, motor court and landscape. They hired Cowan Height’s own Lisa Patterson to implement this plan.

Two years ago the Lekawa’s hosted her brother’s wedding in their yard which was almost ruined by a

brush fire raging up from Newport Blvd. Luckily the water dropping helicopters took care of the fire without drenching the bride or any guests. Those must be some great wedding photos, firemen and all!

Over the years they have completely transformed every room in the home, all the while keeping to the tradition of the French style. You may remember this home on the CHOC home tour a few years ago.

I feel like King Louis XV might be around the corner drinking champagne and enjoying the view which is why I hang out here. It is grand but it remains warm and inviting. Their two dogs -- Harley and Roscoe -- love it here, too...

I live and work in Prospect Village, a community of twelve “live/work” resi-dences, at the foot of South Prospect Avenue in “Old Town Tustin.” I’ve been here the last seven plus years and enjoy a short daily commute to my office on the ground floor. When I first moved here, I was often asked why, to which I responded, it’s closer to the bike shop. My principal recreation these days is cycling and the bike

shop up the street is a gathering place for my fellow cyclists. I also play golf and would like to play more if I had the time. I’m the father of two wonderful daughters and the grandfather of five wonderful grandchildren.

When advising clients on best practices, I generally disclaim any special knowledge beyond my experiences with other transac-tions similar to the current situation. Examples include selecting a tax-advantaged structure (partnership vs corporation vs LLC) or aggressively defending a tax position when its apparent that the government’s legal interpretation was selected to increase taxes payable to the government. I once appealed a California Franchise Tax Board (FTB) assessment regarding the timing of a theft loss. A partnership had a large capital gain and reinvested the proceeds in a fraudulent investment. The partnership offset the gain with the loss on its filed partnership tax return. The FTB acknowledged the loss but wanted the loss recognized in the fol-lowing year, which wasn’t a very taxpayer friendly position. We

prevailed by simply pointing out that the fraudulent investment was worthless at the time the tax return was filed and the proper value of the investment on the partnership balance sheet was $-0- at the end of year one.

Searching for the answers to life’s persistent questions includes, in my case, asking how can I help and be of the greatest benefit to the individuals and organizations I serve. Judgments are often based on feelings. Applying analytic methods to the decision making process offers a preferred method of analysis. Over the years, I’ve observed the many successes and setbacks of my cli-ents. These observations enable me to apply the wisdom gained to current events and transactions. I’m a California licensed CPA. I’m originally from Pennsylvania where I graduated from Duquesne University majoring in accounting and economics. My apprenticeship and early training in the accounting profes-sion was with PricewaterhouseCoopers. My mission has been and remains to help individuals and businesses maximize their economic potential by properly accounting for their business transactions as well as complying with applicable tax laws.I provide assurance services to business and not for profit organi-zations that require annual audited financial statements. My tax compliance practice includes individual, corporate, partnership, trust and estate tax preparation services and audit represen-tation. I’m a “tax pro.” Accounting services include assisting clients in preparing year - end financial statements.

I hope to hear from you and try to answer any of life’s persistent questions that you may have.

on an experience not soon forgotten

The December Issue Of CHL Featured Trinity’s An-nual Homebuilding Trip To Tijuana, Mexico. Now That The Families Have Returned From The Trip

Last Month, Some Of The Youngest Team Members Share Their Thoughts And Observations From

Their Experience

At the beginning of January, my family traveled with Trinity United Presbyterian Church to Tijuana to build houses for families in need. Being my sec-ond time going on this trip, this past trip managed to exceed my prior experience. Not only was this weekend an opportunity to strengthen relation-ships with my family and friends but strengthen my relationship with God through serving families in need. Although a short trip, I created memories that I would remember forever, from playing with the family’s six children to painting from the house the brightest colors. All of these were eye-opening, however, the thing that stood out to me most was the family’s positive attitude and appreciation.

When looking back on this weekend, I will always remember the smiles on the children’s faces. They were always standing readily with a paintbrush in hand, waiting to be given approval to paint. Their excitement radiated across the worksite, putting smiles on everyone’s faces. The boys of the fami-ly also befriended the younger boys from trinity, enjoying games of soccer during breaks. Although caring and watching for six kids, the mother con-tributed as much as possible, painting and helping whenever she wasn’t holding her six-month-old baby or playing with her two-year-old daughter. Despite the difficulties they faced, all members of the family never ceased to have a positive attitude, displaying their appreciation and gratitude each day. They made an effort to welcome us into their home, even giving us burritos to show their thanks. The most moving moment occurred during the key ceremony, however. While passing around the key, everyone shared their experiences and wished the family a happy and healthy future. During this time, tears streamed down the mother and daugh-ter’s faces. Each family member expressed their immense appreciation, leaving an imprint a lasting impact on me.

This trip may only be one weekend, but its impact will last a

lifetime. I will always remember the smiles on the kids’ faces

when they step into the door of their new home, or the laugh-

ter of the boys playing soccer together. I strengthened bonds

with my family and friends on this trip that will last forever.

Even though the trip was only a few weeks ago, I’m already

looking forward to next year.

Libby Schrank, 10th grade, sophomore, Foothill

high school

This was my sixth year building a home in Mexico and every year it is a lot of fun but I am always impacted by seeing where the families we build for are living before we come. This year we built a home for a single mom with seven kids. They all shared a one room shack pieced together with old house parts and two twin beds for all eight of them. It really made me grateful for the home I have and that even though I have to share a room with my brother, we have a bedroom to ourselves and we each have our own bed.

It is easy in Orange County to feel like we don't have as nice a home, or car, or things as others around us. But compared to the families we build for, I am very, very lucky. And now that we were able to give this family a new home with two bedrooms, new beds, a real floor and insulation, they can stay warm and build great memories in their new home like our family does in ours. And the most important thing I have realized is that no matter what things we have or do not have, the most important thing a family can have is love. This family loved each other, even after sharing such a small space together. It makes me think that maybe I can do a better job of show-ing love to my brothers, too. Drew Tyson, Cowan Heights resident, 12 years old, Hewes Middle School, seventh grade

When I went to Mexico to build a house for a family, the first thing I noticed was how

mismatched everything seemed. Most of the homes I saw on the way to our group's

build site were little shacks, run-down houses or regular houses and apartment

buildings. One side of the road faced the ocean, the houses on that side were cramped

together, like an overcrowded beach. In the area where our family we were building

for lived had random apartment building style houses, shacks and just regular homes.

When we got to the build site, we saw the family's house, it looked like a shipping

container. It had one window that was cracked, it had a tarp covering half of the top

and it had no doors. The family had been living there for three months. We met their

kids, who were really fun to play with. The littlest sister, Lina, was two and extremely

funny. So that was really fun watching her. The majority of the time I helped paint the

sides of the house, the drywall, beams and window frames. We painted the outside of

the house blue and peach and the inside was white. When we were done we gave the

keys to the family. It was so amazing when they got to see their new house.

Overall, the trip was really fun. I had a great time helping build their new house. I'm so

glad that the family now has a roof over their heads, electricity, and new clothes and

appliances. After seeing the amount of poverty there, I'm really grateful for my own

home, and I can't wait to do that again next year.

Lilly Hurtt, Red Hill Lutheran, Grade six, Age 11

This year's Mexico house build was definitely an enjoyable experience for me. I had a lot of fun

meeting and playing with the little children who lived nearby our building site. There were two

in particular that really bonded with Ellie Joy and myself. The first was named Brandon. He

showed us where to buy delicious, fresh baked Mexican sweet bread or pan dulce.

The second was a little girl, about two years old. We never found out her name but that didn't

stop us from playing and having fun with her. When we went down the road to keep working,

you could see her crying for us to come back.

The fact that we spoke different languages didn't stop us from connecting with each other. Even

though we had a little trouble understanding each other at times, we were able to find out a lot

about those children. Overall, I learned that no matter how different someone is, you can still

have a blast with them.

Sarah Ujifusa, seventh grade, Hewes middle school, 12 years old

This year I traveled to Mexico with my mom and my two broth-

ers to build a home for a family in need. I really enjoyed the

trip and opportunity to give something back to those who are

in need. I even had fun working hard!

On the second day of our home build, each person in our group

gave a message to the family of the new home. My message was

that I was super grateful to be a part of this project and happy

to be there. I hope she enjoys her home as much as we enjoyed

building it.Blake Worden, 14 years old, freshman, Foothill high

One of the most life changing experiences I have encountered is working with Homes of Hope. Homes of Hope is an organization that builds homes for needy families in low-income areas such as Tijuana, Mexico. This past January, I had the opportunity to travel to Mexico, along with church members, to build a home for a family. Their previous living conditions were unbelievable; in fact, they actually lived in what we would call a shack -- a wooden structure with a tarp for a roof. I felt privileged to be able to help build a brand new home for a single mother and her twin boys (12 years) and her daughter (11 years). Upon arriving at our loca-tion, I glanced around our surroundings and noticed poverty everywhere. The kids were running around playing soccer in the dirt and loud music was playing in the distance. As I got off the bus, I approached a young boy and asked, “Como te llamas,” which means, “what is your name?” in Spanish. He answered, “Me llamo Brandon.” I could tell he was happy to see me because when I asked him his name, his face lit up like a Christ-mas tree. After the bus was unloaded and we settled in, we prayed for the families and asked for safety in what we were about to do. We began organizing the building supplies and after four hours, we were ready to eat lunch. During lunch we were able to share our food with some of the kids in the area. They were so appreciative! Overall this was a great expe-rience.Reese Boyd, 13, seventh grade, Hewes, Cowan Heights resi-dent

Our family had a great time in Mexico. One year ago, I went on this trip with the Tyson Family and had a great time. It was a wonderful experience to be a part of making life better for a family in need. This year my entire family decided to go including my mom and my two brothers. We built a home for a single mom and her seven children. It was hard work but knowing how much our work made her life better made it all worth it.

As I watched the neighborhood where our home was built, I couldn't help but be affected by the deplorable conditions in which the citizens live. It inspired me to write about my experience and global warming is a part of my senior project. My experiences in Mexico year after year are something I will never forget, something I am proud to say I am part of.Trevor Worden, 17 years old, se-nior, Foothill high school, Cowan Heights resident
