My Advice to the Women, Part 1By Umm Abdillaah al-Waadieeyah

Introduction by the Shaykh, the Allaamah, Scholar of Hadeeth, Muqbil Ibn Haadee Al-Waadiee followed by an introduction by the Author: Umm Abdillaah al-Waadieeyah

    Shaykhs Introduction

All praise is due to Allaah, Lord of all creation and may the peace and blessings ofAllaah be upon our trustworthy Prophet Muhammad, his family and his

companions. I testify that none has the right to be worshipped in truth exceptAllaah and I testify that Muhammad is His Slave and Messenger.

    To proceed:

This is a piece of advice (directed) to the women. It is followed by a set ofquestions and answers that were presented to the women, and they undertook thetask of answering them. I chose, from that, one of their responses so that it couldbe added to (the book) My advice to the women.

As for the book My advice to the women, then it is relevant and it is especiallyapplicable to the women of our land, for verily their level of understanding and

    knowledge is extremely low.

The people are to be divided into three categories when it comes to (dealing)with the women:

    1) Those who give them free reign and allow them to do as they please. They allowthem to travel without a mahram, free mix in the schools, universities and theirplaces of work, whether it is in the hospitals, offices or other places of worldlywork; where the affairs of the Muslims have turned into a state of chaos and(blatant) imitation of the Europeans. And to Allaah we belong and to Him we willreturn.

    2) They are those who neglect the women and leave them without any Islamiceducation. So he leaves these women like cattle, not knowing anything that Allaahmade obligatory upon her. Consequently, she is susceptible and wide-open to trialsand tribulation, to opposing the commands of Allaah and even to corrupting herown family, and she will (easily) respond to everyone and anyone who screams theloudest!

My Advice to t he Women, Par t 1- Umm Abdil laah al -Waadi eeyyah

    3) The balanced group - Those who take the responsibility of educating thewomen, within the boundaries of the Book and the Sunnah, following the saying ofAllaah, The Mighty and Majestic:

O you who believe! Ward off yourselves and your f amili es f rom t he hell f ir ewhose fuel i s men and st ones . At -Tahreem (66): 6

It is authentically reported in the Saheehayn1 upon the authority of Ibn Umar(Radiya Allaahu anhu) that the Messenger of Allaah (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wasallam) said:

All of you are Shepherds and you will all be questioned about your flock

The enemies of Islaam have a great desire to misguide the women with their falsepropaganda. Truly to Allaah we belong and to Him we return. Based upon that, itis a great obligation upon the woman to advise her sisters, call them to Allaah andwarn them against those male and females who are the cause of these trials and

tribulations, and likewise who have been afflicted by them too. Hopefully, she willfill this role where there is a void.

However, as for her arranging lectures, where both men and women attendtogether with one another, then this never occurred at the time of the Prophet(Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam). Similarly, she herself would not be safe from thisfitnah. So the harms of these lectures are greater than their benefit.

Worse than that, is to (choose) to be a female announcer. I dont know one femalecaller to Allaah from amongst this type of people. Rather they are known to becorrupt and spread corruption, freely mix with the sinful male announcers and to

beautify their flirtatious voices. May Allaah sever their tongues and relieve thelands and slaves from their likes.

It is upon the women to study the biography of the Messenger of Allaah (SallaAllaahu Alayhi wa sallam) and the biography of those female callers who werepresent at the time of the Prophet (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam). The likes ofUmm Sulaim and the other virtuous female companions, and then follow theirmethodology; if she truly hopes for Allaah and the Last Day.

We intended by having the questions and answers (towards the end of the book) toallow the women to gain some experience and to refute the people of innovation. Also to say to the innovators, "Our women, by the Will of Allaah, will soon refute

you and they, by the Will of Allaah, have already begun writing a book in questionand answer form, called 'Iydaah Al-Maqaal fee Ar-Radd 'ala Al-Mubtadi'ah Ad-Dullaal'. May Allaah make it easy to complete.

We say to the Sheeah who strive to busy us with small pamphlets, which are fullof ignorance, a war against the Sunnah and an attempt to chase the people away

from it, "Tread with caution as by the Will of Allaah you will never obstruct ourpath, by the Will of Allaah, our daughters will soon refute you.

As for us, then all praise is due to Allaah, we have already broken your backsthrough our books: Riyaadul Jannah fee Ar-Radd Ala Adaa as Sunnah, Ash-Shafaaah, Irshaad dhaw al-Fatn li ibaad ghulaat Ar-Rawaafidh min al-yemen'and 'al-ilhaad al Khomeini fee ard al-haramayn.

Lastly, we ask Allaah that He grants success to the author of this advice and thequestions and answers, in allowing her to continue upon the path of seekingbeneficial knowledge, enabling her to perform righteous actions and calling tothis. Verily He is able to do all things.

After looking at what has been prepared for the second print, I found that itcontained benefits which were extremely valuable like authentication andweakening (of ahaadeeth), praise and disparagement of narrators and othervaluable (pieces) of advice.

The people raced with one another in purchasing the first edition and I hope thatthe race will be greater for this edition.

The author of the book is Umm Abdillaah al-Waadieeyyah. She is firmly groundedin many sciences of the religion, and she demonstrates the manners of theMessenger of Allaah (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam). She is dignified andextremely careful in preserving her time. Due to this, Allaah has blessed heractivities. She is always keen to benefit her sisters, and she will teach a book untilshe completes the whole of it and then moves on to the next book. She has a lovefor the books of Aqeedah, Fiqh and Grammar.

Books she has authored:My Advice to the women Printed in Sanaa - all copies have been sold!As-Saheeh al-musnad min ash-Shamaail al muhammadiyyah - PrintedAl-Jaami as-Saheeh fil ilm wa fadlihi

At this moment in time, she is working on various books. The best of them is As-Saheeh al-musnad min as-Seerah an-Nabawiyyah. (In this work), she rigidly sticksto the authentic ahaadeeth, unlike those who claimed that they only relied uponauthentic narrations when compiling the biography of the Prophet (Salla AllaahuAlayhi wa sallam) and never fulfilled this. We ask Allaah that He makes it easy forher to finish this amazing project, which the people frequently ask about.

All praise is due to Allaah; Umm Abdillah hates hizbiyyah and warns against it. MayAllaah reward her with good and rectify her state and the state of her children.Verily He is able to do all things.

    Authors Introduction

All praise is due to Allaah, and the peace and blessings be upon the Messenger ofAllaah. I testify that none has the right to be worshipped in truth except Allaahalone without any partner and I testify that Muhammad is his Slave and Messenger.

    To proceed:

In front of you is a new print (i.e. of the book My Advice to the Women) which Ipresent to my Muslim sister, hoping that Allaah, The Mighty and Majestic, willallow you to benefit from it.

I present to you this book which is small in size but important due to the advice

and guidance it contains, especially as giving advice is from the way of theMessengers.

Nooh (Alayhisalaam) said to his nation:

I convey unto you the Messages of my Lord and give sincere advice to you.And I know from Allaah what you know not. (Al-A'raf 7:62)

    Hood (Alayhisalaam) said:

I convey unto you the Messages of my Lord, and I am a trustworthy adviser (or

    well-wisher) for you. (Al-A' raf 7:68)

    Saalih (Alayhisalaam) said:

Then he [Saalih] turned from them, and said: O my people! I have indeedconveyed to you the Message of my Lord, and have given you good advice but

you like not good advisers. (Al-A'raf 7:79)

    Shuayb (Alayhisalaam) said:

Then he (Shu'ayb) turned from them and said: O my people! I have indeedconveyed my Lord's Messages unto you and I have given you good advice. Then

how can I sorrow for the disbelieving people's (destruction). (Al-A'raf 7:93)

My Advice to t he Women, Par t 1- Umm Abdil laah al -Waadi eeyyah

Advice is the supporting pillar of the religion

There comes in Saheeh Muslim, with a completely connected chain, and inBukhaari, in Mualaq form, upon the authority of Abu Ruqayyah Tameem ad-Daaree(Radiya Allaahu anhu) that the Messenger of Allaah (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wasallam) said, The religion is advice. We said, To whom O Messenger of Allaah? He said, To Allaah, His Messenger, His Book, the leaders of the Muslims, and thecommon folk.

Jareer Ibn Abdullaah pledged allegiance to the Prophet (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wasallam) that he would perform the prayer, give zakaat and advise each and everyMuslim. This hadeeth is reported by the two Shaykhs (Bukhaari and Muslim) upon theauthority of Jareer Ibn Abdullaah.

When asked what is considered to be the most superior of actions, Abdullaah Ibn

Al-Mubaarak replied, Offering advice for the sake of Allaah. The reference forthis narration of Ibn Al-Mubaarak is found in the book Jaami Al-Uloom walHikaam - page 80.

For this reason, I wanted to put forth these pieces of advice to those who are(considered) my sisters for the sake of Allaah, especially when it was requested ofme to write about the issues pertaining to the women and that which is specific tothem. (Whenever I was asked this), my answer was always that Shaykh Mustafa, may Allaah reward him with good, has already taken upon this task so there is noneed to chase after that which already exists, as our main concern is to aid Islaam. My latest work on this book has been to slightly expand and revise it where

    needed.

I ask Allaah, The Mighty and Majestic, that He places this upon my scale of gooddeeds, and that He allows this to be beneficial. All praise is due to Allaah, Lord ofall the creation.

An Encouragement to be Sincere and PreserveOnes TimeMy Advice to Women, Part 2

    By Umm Abdillaah al-Waadieeyah

Imaam al-Bukhaari, may Allaah have mercy upon him, reported on the authority ofUmar (Radiy Allaahu Anhu) who said that the Messenger of Allaah (Salla AllaahuAlayhi wa sallam) said,

Verily, deeds are but by intention and every person will receive what theyintended. Thus, he whose migration was for Allaah and His Messenger, then hismigration is for Allaah and His Messenger; and he whose migration was to achievesome worldly gain or to marry a woman, then his migration is for that which heintended.1

I advise myself and you to fear Allaah (At-Taqwa)2, The Mighty and Majestic, insecret and in the open, and that we perform actions purely seeking the GloriousFace of Allaah.

Additionally, that we do not perform any action showing off or boasting, and Iadvise that we hold firmly onto our religion, for we will certainly be heldaccountable before Allaah, The Mighty and Majestic.

In the saheehayn there comes on the authority of Adee ibn Haatim that he said

that the Messenger of Allaah (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) said,

There is not one of you except that his Lord will speak to him and there will notbe any translator (At-Tarjumaan)3 between them. So he will look to his right andhe will not see except that which he has prepared; he will look to his left and notsee except which he has done and he will look in front of him and he will not seeexcept the hellfire in front of his face. Fear the fire even if it be with half a date.

And Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, did not create us in play. The Most High said:

Did you think that We had created you in play (without any purpose), and thatyou would not be brought back to Us?

    (Al-Mu'minoon 23:115)

    The Most High said:

1 (Al-Fath 1/135)2 An all inclusive term that means to obey Allaah and His Messenger.3 A person that translates from one language to another.

We created not the heavens and the earth and all that is between them exceptwith truth, and for an appointed term. But those who disbelieve turn away

from that whereof they are warned.(Al-Ahqaaf 46:3)

Instead, He created us for a great purpose.

    He, the Most High said:

And I (Allaah) created not the jinn and mankind except that they shouldworship Me (Alone).

    (Adh-Dhaariyaat 51:56)

Worship linguistically means: Submission and humility. And it is said (in the Arabiclanguage): a path is Muabbad (levelled or trodden). Levelled meaning Mudhallal(rendered submissive).

Technically (Islamically) it has been defined by Shaykhul-Islaam ibn Taymiyyah as:An all inclusive word used for everything which Allaah loves and is pleasedwith, from both sayings and actions, apparent and hidden.

It is as if we have been created for this worldly life, to eat, to drink and to play, aswe fail to perform that which Allaah wants from us. Contrary to that, we rush tothe opposite. So dont let this worldly life divert you, as a lifespan is very short.

Surely the one who uttered (these lines of poetry) spoke the truth,

The life span is too short a period to be wasted in calculation

Seize its hours; for it passes with the passing of the clouds.

Furthermore, even the world itself has a very short lifespan as Allaah, the MostHigh, said:

Know that the life of this world is only play and amusement, pomp and mutualboasting among you, and rivalry in respect of wealth and children, as the

likeness of vegetation after rain, thereof the growth is pleasing to the tiller;afterwards it dries up and you see it turning yellow; then it becomes straw. Butin the Hereafter (there is) a severe torment (for the disbelievers, evil-doers),

and (there is) Forgiveness from Allaah and (His) Good Pleasure (for thebelievers, good-doers), whereas the life of this world is only a deceiving

    enjoyment.(Al-Hadeed 57:20)

    He, the Most High said:

And put forward to them the example of the life of this world, it is like thewater (rain) which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth

mingles with it, and becomes fresh and green. But (later) it becomes dry andbroken pieces, which the winds scatter. And Allaah is Able to do everything.

    (Al-Kahf 18:45)

    The Most High said:

Verily the likeness of (this) worldly life is as the water (rain) which We senddown from the sky, so by it arises the intermingled produce of the earth of

which men and cattle eat until when the earth is clad with its adornments andis beautified, and its people think that they have all the powers of disposalover it, Our Command reaches it by night or by day and We make it like a

clean-mown harvest, as if it had not flourished yesterday! Thus do We explainthe Ayt (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, laws, etc.) in

detail for the people who reflect.(Yunus 10:24)

The Companions, may Allaah be pleased with them, who had the utmost zeal (in

aspiring for good), only asked for paradise and they didnt desire anything else.

Imaam Al-Bukhaari reports on the authority of Abu Hurairah (Radiy Allaahu Anhu)that he said,

An Arab Bedouin came to the Prophet (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) and said,Direct me to something that if I performed it, I would enter Paradise. The Prophet (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) responded, Worship Allaah and donot associate anything as a partner with Him. Establish the prayer ,give zakaat andfast Ramadhaan. The Bedouin said, By the One Who my soul is in His Hand I will not increase upon

that.So when the Bedouin departed the Prophet (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) said,Whoever would be pleased to look at a man from the people of paradise thenlook at him.

Imaam Al-Bukhaari reports on the authority of Anas ibn Maalik (Radiy AllaahuAnhu) that he said,

If the Prophet (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) went to Qubaa he would visitUmm Haram bint Milhaan who used to feed him, and she was the wife of UbaadahIbn as-Saamit. He entered upon her one day, so she fed him and then theMessenger of Allaah (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) slept and then he woke up

whilst laughing. She said, What makes you laugh O Messenger of Allaah? He responded, A people from my Ummah were shown to me whilst they wereupon a military expedition in the path of Allaah. They will ride the surface of thesea like kings upon their thrones. So she said, Supplicate to Allaah that He makes me from the first of them. Hereplied, "You will be from the first of them."She actually did travel the sea and this was at the time of Mu'aawiyah. She fell offher riding beast when she was leaving the sea and died.

An Encouragement t o be Sincere and Preserve Ones Time- Umm Abdil laah al -Waadi eeyyah

This was also reported by Muslim.

Regarding the saying of the Prophet (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) like kingsupon their thrones Al Haafidh ibn Hajr (11/87) said, Ibn Abdul Barr said, Heintended by this, and Allaah knows best, that he saw those who travelled the seawhilst upon military expeditions as kings upon thrones in paradise, and his visionsare revelation. Allaah has said concerning the people of paradise: Facing eachother on thrones and Recl ining on t hronesAl-Araaik: Are thrones inside canopies.

Iyaad said, That (explanation) is possibly (correct). But another possibility is thatthis is news about their actual state when they were upon a military expeditiondue to their power, uprightness, large number and great quality, as if they werekings upon thrones.

I say (Ibn Hajr): That the latter explanation is far fetched and the first seemsstronger. End of quote from Al-Fath.

Abu Abdir Rahmaan al-Waadiee (Shaykh Muqbil) said, The explanation mentionedby Iyaad is closer (to the truth), as Umm Haram said lastly, Invoke Allaah, OMessenger of Allaah, that I am from them. So he replied: You will be from thefirst of them, and it turned out that she was actually from them.

Imaam al-Bukhaari reported in (Al-Adab al Mufrad pg. 177) upon the authority ofAbu Hurairah that he said,

A fever came to the Prophet (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) and he said, Sendme to those whom you choose and prefer from amongst your people. So he sent it

to the Ansaar and it remained with them for six days and nights until it becameunbearable upon them. So he visited their dwelling place and they complained ofthis to the Prophet (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam). So he visited their houses oneby one, place by place, supplicating for them to be cured. When he returned, oneof their women followed him and said, 'By the One Who sent you with the truth, verily I am from the Ansaar and my father is from the Ansaar. Supplicate to Allaahfor me like you supplicated for the Ansaar.'So the Prophet (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) said, 'What would you like better? If you choose, I will supplicate to Allaah that He cures you or if you choose to havepatience, then for you is paradise.'She responded, I will definitely have patience as I do not want to jeopardiseparadise.'

This hadeeth is authentic as is mentioned in as Saheeh al-Musnad 2/396.

The attitude of the companions was marvellous. They tolerated these sicknessesand hunger, and they faced the disbelievers with their swords, all this whilstcoveting the reward, bounty and paradise.

We complain to Allaah about our state, as the matter of preparing for thehereafter and being serious about it is something rare amongst many of the men,

never mind the women, except for those who My Lord has mercy upon. Verily He isThe All-Mighty, The Most Merciful.

Moreover, exerting effort and striving certainly leads to the straight path whichhas no crookedness.

    The Most High said:

As for those who strive hard in Us (Our Cause), We will surely guide them toOur Paths (i.e. Allaah's Religion - Islamic Monotheism). And verily, Allaah is with

    the Muhsinn (good doers)."(Al-'Ankabut 29:69)

And Allaah, the Most High commanded us:

And strive hard in Allaah's Cause as you ought to strive (with sincerity and withall your efforts that His Name should be superior).

    (Al-Hajj 22:78)

The Prophet (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam)said, as is reported in Saheeh Muslimupon the authority of Abu Hurairah,

Strive for that which benefits you, seek aid from Allaah and do not be weak. His saying: Strive for that which benefits you, i.e. that which benefits you inyour worldly life and your hereafter.

His saying: And do not be weak is a prohibition of being weak, even thoughweakness is lesser then laziness as sometimes weakness could be the result of an

illness or old age or that which resembles this.In opposition to laziness for it is dispraise-worthy at all times.Laziness is the opposite of liveliness. The Prophet (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam)used to seek refuge with Allaah from laziness as he used to say,

O Allaah, I seek refuge with you from weakness and laziness

Therefore, the one who has lost in this world is the one whom Allaah has blessedwith health and spare time, and he has failed to make the most of them in thatwhich would benefit him.

Imam Al-Bukhaari reports upon the authority of Ibn Abbaas that he said that the

Prophet (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) said,

Two blessings are lost by the majority of the people, their health and sparetime.

The soul is in one of two conditions:It is busy obeying Allaah.

It occupies a person, because if it is not preoccupied it will occupy, but if it findssomeone to attend to it properly, then it will be upright.

    The poet said,

Youth, free time and madness ruin a person in the worse way.

Thus, preserve your time and fill it with all the good possible, as it is the mostprecious of your wealth; especially before you give birth because at that pointyour free time will be greatest. This is in opposition to the one who has children, because her time is taken up. And Allaahs Aid is sought.

I bring this topic to a close with the saying of the poet,

Time is the most precious thing that you could be anxious to preserveAnd I believe its the easiest thing to escape you.

Preserving The Tongue Is From The Perf ect ion Of Ones Islaam- Umm Abdil laah al -Waadieeyyah

Preserving The Tongue Is From The Perfection

Of Ones IslaamMy Advice To The Women, Part 3

    By Umm Abdillaah al-Waadieeyyah

Bukhaari reports (1/53) and Muslim (1/15), the wording is that of Bukhaari, uponthe authority of Abdullaah Ibn Amr Ibn Al-Aas that the Prophet (Salla AllaahuAlayhi wa sallam) said, The Muslim is the one who the Muslims are safe from histongue and hand.

His (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) saying: Muslims:

Al Haafidh (Ibn Hajr) commenting upon this in Fathul Baaree, said,Note (in this sentence) the word Muslims has been used to indicate theoverwhelming relevancy because the Muslim refraining from harming his Muslimbrother is to be stressed more emphatically, as the disbelievers at that time werebeing fought, even though amongst them were those whom it was obligatory tohold back from. Also, it has been mentioned in masculine plural form highlightingthe most probable (scenario); for indeed the women are included in this.

The tongue was specifically mentioned because it expresses what a person thinksin oneself and the hand because it carries out most actions. This hadeeth is more general when it pertains to the tongue with the exclusion of

the hand, because its possible for the tongue to speak about those in the past, the present and the future, in opposition to the hand. Yes, its possible that thehand could participate with the tongue through writing, and the effect of this isdefinitely something great.Delivering the necessary beats with the hand, when establishing prescribedpunishments and disciplining a Muslim who deserves this, legislatively, is notconsidered to be (harming a Muslim with the hand). End of quote.

Therefore, by guarding the tongue from slipping (a person can obtain) the rewardthat Allaah gives to His slaves, in that He will direct them to righteousness andforgiveness of their sins.

O you who believe! Keep your duty to Allh and fear Him, and speak (always)the truth. He will direct you to do righteous good deeds and will forgive you

their actions. This means that He would forgive their past sins; and if anythingoccurs from them in the future He will inspire them to repent.

    He, the Most High, said:

Not a saying (qawl) does he (or she) utter, but there is a watcher by him ready(to record it).

Soorah Qaaf (50):18The word 'Qawl (in this verse) is in the indefinite form; and when an indefiniteword comes in the course of a negation it conveys a general and all-inclusivemeaning. On top of that, if the word min comes before it, it is even greater ingenerality.

Some of the scholars stated:None of the actions are recorded unless they warrant a reward or a punishment, and this is because there is an omission of words which has been implied (inmeaning). Therefore, it means: Not a word does he utter that is worthy ofdeserving recompense.

The base rule is that there is no omission. So the verse is to be understood with itsapparent meaning, in that it is general and applies to all kinds of speech.Refer to Adwaa al-Bayaan (7/651):

Many of the women today move their tongues loosely when speaking, as if shedoesnt know that she will be brought to account for her actions and speech. If

they (actions and speech) were evil, then she will be rewarded with evil. If they(actions and speech) were good, then she will be rewarded with good.

Al Haakim reports in his book Al Mustadrak upon the authority of Ubaadah IbnAs-Saamit (Radiy Allaahu anhu) that the Prophet (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam)pointed to his mouth and said:Silence brings nothing but good.Muaadh (Radiy Allaahu anhu) said to him: Will we be held to account for thatwhich we speak with our tongues? The Prophet (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) (upon hearing this) hit Muaadhsthigh and said, O Muaadh! May your mother be bereaved of you, or he said:

"Maasha Allaah," that he said this to him.He (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) said: Is there anything that causes the peopleto be dragged on their nose to the Hellfire except that which their tonguesuttered? So he who believes in Allaah and the Last Day then let him speak good orremain silent (refrain from evil speech). Speak good - you will benefit; remainsilent - you will be safe.

This hadeeth is authentic, as mentioned in As Saheeh al Musnad. (1/400)

    1. Backbiting

The definition of backbiting has been clearly explained in the hadeeth reported byMuslim (4/2001) upon the authority of Aboo Hurairah that the Messenger of Allaah(Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) said:Do you know what backbiting is?They said: Allaah and His Messenger know best.He said: Mentioning your brother with that which he dislikes. It was said to the Prophet (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam): Even if what Imention about my brother is true?He (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) said: If what you have said concerning him istrue, then surely you have backbitten him; and if what you said isnt true, thensurely you have slandered him.

As for his statement: You have slandered him.An-Nawawi (commenting upon this in) (Sharh Muslim 16/142), said: The Haa is tobe pronounced lightly, and it takes a fathah. It means: that which you have said

about him was slander, and this is because it was false.

Backbit ing is Haraam (impermissibl e), whet her i t is in small or greatmount s:

It is reported in the Sunan of Aboo Daawood upon the authority of Aaishah thatshe said:O Messenger of Allaah, it suffices you that Safiyyah is such and such. One of the narrators said: She meant that she is a woman of short stature. So theProphet (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) said: You have spoken a word that if itwere mixed with the sea, it would pollute it.

It is reported in the Saheehayn (Bukhaari and Muslim) on the authority of AbooBakrah who said that the Prophet (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) said:Verily your blood and wealth is sacred just like the sanctity of this day, in thismonth of yours, in this land of yours.

There comes in the Sunan of At-Tirmidhee upon the authority of Ibn Umar that hesaid:The Messenger of Allaah (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) ascended the pulpit, and shouted out in a loud voice: O people who have believed with their tonguebut Eemaan has not reached their hearts! Do not harm the Muslims, do not revile

them and do not reveal their faults. For surely, the one who follows the faults ofhis Muslim brother, Allaah will follow his faults; and if Allaah was to follow hisfaults, then He will expose him even if he was hidden in the deepest part of his

house. This hadeeth is found in Saheeh al-Musnad 1/508

It is reported in Sunan Aboo Daawood upon the authority of Anas Ibn Maalik whosaid: The Messenger of Allaah (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) said:During the Mi`raaj (the Night of Ascension), I saw a group of people who werescratching their chests and faces with their copper nails. I asked, `Who are thesepeople, O Jibreel?'Jibreel replied: `These are the people who ate the flesh of others (by backbiting)and trampled upon people's honour. This hadeeth is authentic.

Al Haafidh Ibn Katheer said in his tafseer (4/215):

Backbiting is impermissible by unanimous agreement. The only exception to thisis that speech which carries a greater overall benefit, as is the case with al-Jarhwa Tadeel (recommendation and disparagement) and sincere advice. An exampleof this is the saying of the Prophet (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam), at a timewhen a sinful individual sought permission to enter: Let him enter, what an evilman is the brother of this clan. Also the saying of the Prophet (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) to Faatimah bintQais, when Muaawiyah and Aboo Jahm sought her hand in marriage: As forMuaawiyah then he is poor, and as for Aboo Jahm then he is very hard on the

women.Additionally, those cases that are similar to this, but apart from them, all theother types of backbiting are severely prohibited. End of quote.

I say: These cases that are not deemed to be backbiting have been collected in thestatement of the poet:Dispraising is not backbiting in six casesWhen voicing a grievanceDescribing and warningSpeaking about the one who openly sinsFor the one who seeks a religious fatwa

And when seeking aid in removing an evilThe reference point for the two lines of poetry is (Subul As-Salaam 1084)

The scholars have differed over whether or not backbiting is counted as being fromamongst the major sins.Al Qurtubi has conveyed that there is a unanimous consensus that it is from themajor sins. However, this claim of a unanimous agreement is incorrect, as Ibn Hajr mentionedthat the author of Ar-Rawdah and Ar Rafaaee both have stated thatbackbiting is from the minor sins.

Nevertheless, the evidences support the (stance) that backbiting is amongst themajor sins. It is reported in Sunan Aboo Daawood upon the authority of Saeed IbnZayd that the Prophet (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) said:

From the worst types of usury is violating the honour of a Muslim without anyrightThis hadeeth is authentic and is mentioned in As Saheeh Al Musnad (1/313).

And it is reported in Sunan Aboo Daawood upon the authority of Anas Ibn Maalikthat the Prophet (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) said:During the Mi`raaj (the Night of Ascension), I saw a group of people who werescratching their chests and faces with their copper nails. I asked, `Who are thesepeople, O Jibreel?'Jibreel replied: `These are the people who ate the flesh of others (by backbiting)and trampled upon people's honour.

This hadeeth has been mentioned earlier.

    Allaah says:

Neither backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of hisdead brother? You would hate it (so hate backbiting). And fear Allh. Verily,

Allh is the One Who accepts repentance, Most Merciful.Soorah Al-Hujuraat (49): 12

Refer to Al Fath (10/470) and Subul as Salaam (no.1073)

Is it backbit ing only i n t he absence of t he individual? That which is apparent from his saying (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam):Mentioning your brother with that which he dislikes applies to mentioning himin his presence and his absence; but al Haafidh Ibn Hajr said:The strongest position is that backbiting is specific to when the individual isabsent. This is in compliance with the derivation of this word from its root. This iswhat the scholars of the Arabic language firmly state.

He went on to say:Yes, mentioning that which a person dislikes in his presence is impermissiblebecause this is considered an insult and abuse. End of his words.

In our time, backbiting has become the enjoyment of many women, except forthose whom Allaah has mercy upon.Hence, it is obligatory upon us that we submit to what our Lord has legislated.

    He said:

It is not for a believer, man or woman, when Allh and His Messenger havedecreed a matter, that they should have any option in their decision. And

whoever disobeys Allh and His Messenger, he has indeed strayed in a plainerror.

between them, is that they say: "We hear and we obey." And such are theprosperous ones (who will live forever in Paradise). And whosoever obeys Allh

and His Messenger (Sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam), fears Allh, and keeps hisduty (to Him), such are the successful ones. Soorah an-Noor(24):51-52

    He said:

But no, by your Lord, they can have no Faith, until they make you (O

Muhammad (Sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam)) judge in all disputes between them, and find in themselves no resistance against your decisions, and accept (them)with full submission. Soorah An-Nisa(4): 65

    And He Said:

(the Qur'n and Prophet Muhammad's Sunnah), and follow not any Auliy'(protectors and helpers, etc. who order you to associate partners in worship

with Allh), besides Him (Allh). Little do you remember! Soorah Al-Araaf(7):3

    And He Said:

And whatsoever the Messenger (Muhammad (Sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam)) givesyou, take it, and whatsoever he forbids you, abstain (from it), and fear Allh.

Verily, Allh is Severe in punishment. Soorah Al- Hashr (59):7

So this issue of backbiting is a very dangerous subject indeed, as a person mightfall into it without even being aware. So be careful! And it is upon you to repent to Allaah from this act.

The Way to Repent from BackbitingIbnul Qayyim said in his book Al-Wabil As-Sayyib pg.113:It is mentioned that the Prophet (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) said:The expiation for backbiting is to seek forgiveness for the person you havebackbitten, and say: O Allaah, forgive us and him.

The Evi ls of t he Tongue- Umm 'Abdillaah al-Waadi'eeyyah

Al Bayhaqi relates this hadeeth in Ad Dawaat Al Kabeer, and he states that thereis a weakness in the chain of narrators.

The scholars have two opinions on this issue (i.e. the way to repent frombackbiting); and these two opinions have been narrated upon Imaam Ahmad.

They are:Is it sufficient to repent from backbiting by seeking forgiveness for the one whohas been backbitten?Or is it mandatory to inform him and seek his pardon?

The correct position is that there is no need to inform him (i.e. the one who hasbeen backbitten). It is sufficient to seek forgiveness and to mention him with good

in the places where you have backbitten him. This is what Shaykhul Islaam IbnTaymiyyah and others held to be the strongest opinion.

Those who have said it is necessary to inform him, hold backbiting to be similar tothe rights that a person has when it relates to their wealth, but the differencebetween them is obvious. As for the rights related to a persons wealth, then thisis because the oppressed benefits when that which has been wrongfully taken fromhim is returned. If he chooses he can take it or if he chooses he can give it ascharity.

When it comes to backbiting this isnt possible, as nothing results from informingthe one who has been backbitten, except (an outcome) that is contrary to that

what has been intended by the legislator. For surely the one who has beenbackbitten will harbour this in his chest. He will be harmed when he hears aboutwhat he has been accused of. This could possibly incite enmity between them, which would never be resolved. Anything that could lead to this, then there is nodoubt that the wise legislator would not allow it or make it permissible, let alonemake it an obligation or command it.

The Shareeah revolves around stopping harms and limiting them, not causing andadding to them. And Allaah knows best. End of his words-may Allaah have mercyupon him.

There is nothing that could be added to the words of Ibnul Qayyim for he hasspoken excellently and skilfully.

(For further information) refer back to Tafseer Ibn Katheer where he explains theSaying of Allaah:Do not backbite one another. Also, refer to As Silsilatul Ad-Daeefah (4/1519) for further details about thechain of narration for the hadeeth:The expiation for backbiting is to seek forgiveness for the one you havebackbitten.

The Third Evil Of The Tongue: LyingMy Advice To The Women, Part 5

    By Umm Abdillaah al-Waadieeyyah

A lie is that which opposes, and is at variance with actual reality.

Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, said:

It is only those who believe not in the Aayt (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allh, who fabricate falsehood, and it is

    they who are liars.Soorah An-Nahl (16):105

Lying is f rom t he signs of t he hypocr it eLying is from the signs of the hypocrite as is reported in the Saheehayn upon theauthority of Aboo Hurairah (Radiya Allaahu Anhu) that the Prophet (Salla AllaahuAlayhi wa sallam) said:The signs of the hypocrite are three: Whenever he speaks he lies, whenever hepromises he breaks it, and if you trust him he proves to be dishonest.

Lying leads to wickednessIt is reported in the Saheehayn upon the authority of Abdullaah Ibn Masood saidthat the Prophet (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) said:Truthfulness leads to righteousness and righteousness leads to Paradise. A mancontinues to tell the truth and strives to be truthful until he is written beforeAllaah as a trustworthy person. Lying leads to wickedness and wickedness leads tothe Hell Fire. A man keeps telling lies until he is written before Allaah as a liar.

The person whose disposition is to lie, and is accustomed to lying so much so that

it becomes part of his character, will be written before Allaah as a liar, in themidst of the liars.Surely, nobody would be pleased that it be said about them that they are a liar, inthe presence of the people. So is it not more deserving that they preventthemselves from being written as a liar before Allaah, and his Lord is the One whocreated and sustained him? We ask Allaah for well being.

Consequently, the people will not believe the one who lies. His narrations will bediscarded and he will be loathed and detested by the people.

The poet spoke truthfully when he said:

How foul are lies! The one who lies is detestedHow beautiful is truthfulness, to Allaah and the people.

Lying is fr om t he major sinsIt is reported in al-Bukhaari upon the authority of Samurah bin Jundab. The Messenger of Allaah (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) used to regularly say tohis Companions: Who amongst you had a dream last night? So he would narratethat which Allaah had willed for him to narrate. One day he said to us: Two mencame to me last night, so they sent me and said, Proceed, so I proceeded withthem.

There comes in the hadeeth: As for the one you passed, and his cheeks, nostrils

and eyes were being torn away, from front to back, he was a liar. He used to leavehis house in the morning and tell a lie which would spread all over the world.

The great est of all li es is lyi ng upon All aahHe, the Most High, said:

The Third Evil Of The Tongue: Lying- Umm Abdil laah al -Waadieeyyah

In the chain of narration there is a breakage as Az-Zuhree never heard from AbooHurairah, as documented in Jaami At-Tahseel. Refer to the book Ahadeeth

    Mu'Allaah pg.233.

Lying to children opens up a door to widespread evil, as the child will inherit thisnotion. He will lie when he speaks, and he will promise then break it.

Even the people in Pre-Islamic times used to detest lying, because it was viewed asa dispraiseworthy characteristic. There you had Aboo Sufyaan, when he was askedby Hirqil (Heraculis) about the virtues of the Prophet (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wasallam), he replied to him truthfully and said: By Allaah if it were not that lyingwould blemish my character I would have lied. i.e. upon the Prophet (SallaAllaahu Alayhi wa sallam), as at that time Aboo Sufyaan hadnt accepted Islaam.

Making the people laugh by t elli ng li es is another f orm of l yingImam At-Tirmidhee reported (4/557: no.2351) upon the authority of thegrandfather of Bahz Ibn Hakeem that the Prophet (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam)said: Woe be to the one who lies to make the people laugh. Woe be to him. Woebe to him.At-Tirmidhee said this hadeeth is sound.I say (Umm Abdillaah): it is just as he stated. It was also reported by Aboo Dawud (2/716), Ahmad (5/3, 5, 7) and Al Hakim(1/46)

Another f orm of ly ing is when a person says: I saw such and such, and inrealit y t hey didn t see it

Imam Al-Bukhaari reports upon the authority of Abdullaah Ibn Umar that theProphet (Salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) said: The worst of lies is to pretend tohave seen something which he has not seen.

It is obligatory upon us all to be truthful with Allaah and with the people. So,woman to woman, we should always aspire to be truthful; and in the futuretruthfulness will become a characteristic of ours, as is mentioned in the hadeethof Ibn Masood which was quoted earlier.
