description

Book one, Kalvarianhof, the Perilous Journey, begins in 1900 China, and ends in Bavaria, at the grand Levi estate called Kalvarianhof, in 1909. The two protagonists, Markus Mathais, and Soloman Levi (called Levi throughout), are eighteen and nineteen year old soldiers in Kaiser Wilhelm II army fighting in the Boxer Rebellion in China, 1900. The story propels these longtime friends through many hair-raising adventures before returning to university and romance back home. Levi marries Katherina, an ambitious archeological student, who herself has a terrifying experience while on a dig in Jerusalem. They experience tragic family events, including Markus having an illicit romance with Levi’s sister. Book one ends with Markus, accepting a military post in the far off Germany colony of South West Africa just before World War One.
