In the summer of 2011, nineteen rising juniors from the Residential Honors Program spent four weeks in Edinburgh, Scotland. For the first time the program was open to any member of the Honors College on a space permitting basis. The students were accompanied by faculty Dr. Thomas Velek, Dr. Thomas Richardson, and honors mentors Lizzie Locker and Stefani Sloma.

The students took two Honors Seminars in an intensive format. Dr. Richardson taught “Scottish Literature and Place” and Dr. Velek taught “Edinburgh; Biography of a City.” In addition to course work the students took trips to Glasgow, the Scottish highlands, Blair Atholl Distillery, Blair Atholl Castle, and were given the opportunity to go hiking in the Pentlands Hills. Living and studying in the center of Edinburgh just steps from the Royal Mile, the students had access to all the sights and amenities of the city. They enjoyed a performance by John Cleese and a traditional Scottish ceilidh.

In 2012 honors students will travel to Belgium with Dr. Brian Anderson and Dr. Kendall Dunkelberg.

The honors study abroad is the culmination of the two-year Residential Honors Program. All students received at least partial scholarship support from the Gordy Honors College.

Support for undergraduate research, internships, and the Honors Study Abroad is made possible by the Honors College endowment and the continued support of alumni and friends of the Honors College.
