THIS WEEK'S ISSUE: Alamar increases share of school market with acquisition

by Michelle LeachTwo weeks from today, the

nonprofi t Heartland Latino Lead-ership will hold its 12th annual conference at Embassy Suites in La Vista featuring an expo where entrepreneurs showcase their goods and services, speaker pre-sentations and workshops explor-ing everything from professional networking to business fi nancing — in addition to new topics.

“We are also working with some artists to promote their work at the conference, said Athena Ramos, president of the HLLC board of directors. Ramos also is the program coordinator at the Center for Reducing Health Dis-parities with UNMC’s College of Public Health. “We have done that in the past, and are hoping to expand that.”

Ramos indicated in previous years the event, which starts the evening of Nov. 3 with a Welcome Reception at TD Ameritrade Park and ends Nov. 4 with an evening Awards Gala following its confer-ence and expo at Embassy Suites, had narrowed its focus to business and leadership.

“But over the past two years — and really starting with the 10th anniversary celebration — we thought it would be a good idea to highlight the cultural aspect,” she said.

As part of this cultural offer-ing, the HLLC planning committee is bringing in around 40 students from South High School who will be showcasing their pieces onsite.

A new event will be the Latino

Youth Rally. Youth development has long been a part of the confer-ence; after all, it has awarded more than $115,000 in scholarships to students since its inception. However, Ramos noted that this focus on youth is being honed even more, thanks in part to its inaugural Latino Youth Rally in the afternoon.

“This is a special event to tar-get and motivate high school and college-age students,” she said.

The rally will feature Ernesto Mejia.

According to HLL informa-tion, Mejia is a youth speaker and

educator who contracted a rare disease — Guillain-Barre Syn-drome — in his teens.

The disease was so serious he was temporarily paralyzed, and was not expected to be a success-ful student. Instead, Mejia defi ed the odds and went on to attain a master’s degree in organizational leadership, and speaks to students about the importance of higher education and fi nding the strength to follow one’s dreams.

This youth focus was very intentional, in that during Program Committee meetings Co-Chair Marcos Rodriguez noted that his

contacts had reached out to him about doing more in this area. In addition, this focus on youth development ties to HLLC’s 2011 theme: “Maximizing Latino Lead-ership and Cultivating Community Power.”

Rally leader Mejia is also joined in the role of speaker by author Mariela Dabbah, who will also present workshops on brand-ing oneself and Latina power.

U.S. Olympian in luge, Ruben Gonzalez, will speak on “Becom-ing Unstoppable,” leveraging his being the fi rst person to compete in four winter Olympics after tak-

Andres Lara will talk about how to be assertive to work up to the top of one’s fi eld, and how to infl uence others with charisma, us-ing his turn-around from homeless at age 16 to millionaire by age 26 as a backdrop.

Businessman-turned-author Robert Renteria works with youth in violent, gang- and drug-ridden environments and will present, “From the Barrio to the Board Room: You Can Be Anybody You Want to Be.”

Formerly a senior exec at sev-eral Fortune 100 companies, Wilka Toppins will lead workshops on how to recruit, train and retain La-tino talent and on common percep-tions and myths that non-Latinos have of Latinos in the workplace.

With the changing economy, Ramos specifically pointed to Isaias Zamarripa’s workshop on reinventing oneself. She also noted “Latino-licious: The Perfect Rec-ipe for Reaching the Latino Con-sumer” headed by Javier Moreno and Yai Vargas-Moreno, as well as Eva Vega Olds’ “Diversity is More than Race” session should be excellent given corporate focus on diversity and marketing.

Lunch keynote will be giv-en by Lillian Rodriguez-Lopez, Chair, National Hispanic Leader-ship Agenda.

Puritan Manufacturing aims to boosteffi ciency by investing in automation

by Michelle LeachThe Tie Yard of Omaha is so

diversifi ed that, while areas like its new truck sales have lagged, other areas, such as its welding division, RibbonWeld, have doubled — driven in part by the short line rail industry, which has benefi ted from stimulus funding. The Omaha-based railroad supplier and service provider contractor has been in the

fortunate position to make invest-ments in existing facilities, includ-ing a rebuild of its Springfi eld, Mo., welding plant.

“We anticipate expansion of our Millard rail sorting facility with the addition of a new automated rail testing, cutting and fabrication line, as well as an automated tie plate sorting conveyor line,” said

at 1302 Grace St., Puritan Manu-facturing has generated and de-livered on as much work now as it did with twice as many people two years ago, thanks to invest-ments in leading-edge automa-tion, as well as balancing this leading-edge technology with a focus on hiring highly-skilled,

President Steve Zalkin and his wife, Kathy Fedman, who started Alamar Uniforms in 1987 out of their northwest Omaha home, have plenty of initiatives on their plate as they plan to mark the 25th an-niversary of their fi rm next year.

Zalkin said the focus is on building a technology infrastructure to enable some of the nation’s larg-est companies to manage employee uniform programs on the Internet.

In January they brought Dan and Mary Gordon into the Alamar Uniforms family with the acquisi-tion of the Nebraska franchise of Educational Outfi tters, which the
