gGastro ’s new way to

document existing

the time it takes to record

medications in half.

In situations where patients

come to your office with a

even just 2 or 3), you can

now quickly enter them in an

Excel-like grid that allows you to

Getting patients to utilize Patient Portals can be a

challenge, and now it is essential with the 5%

adoption requirement put forth in Meaningful Use

Stage 2. gMed is here to help! We have put together

several tips to help our practices show patients the value

and ease of utilizing our Patient Portal!

• Distribute gMed ’s gPortal Brochures. gMed is proud to

offer a new tri-fold brochure that practices can give to

patients, explaining the benefits of using a Patient Portal

and all of the steps to help them get started. gMed ’s

Marketing team is happy to personalize your brochure

with your practice information and company logo, and

you can print them out right at your office! Please feel free

to email [email protected] to request yours today.

• Display promotional pieces, such as signs, banners or

brochures around your office’s waiting room. Emphasize

how easy and quick the Portal makes it to communicate

with the practice, request an appointment or update

medical history prior to a visit.

• Include the URL to your Patient Portal on your practice’s

appointment reminder cards.

• Be sure to link your Patient Portal to your practice’s

website! For help with website design, contact

[email protected].

• Offer a small discount to patients that sign up for your

Portal. The smallest incentive can go a long way!

• Set up a computer in your waiting room where one of

your office staff members can be available to show

patients how easy it is to utilize the Portal and walk them

through the initial sign-up process.

In addition to the great features that it already offers,

gPortal will soon offer online bill pay, which adds a

whole new level of convenience for both patients and your

practice! For more information on gPortal, please

contact: [email protected].

Upcoming

REGULATORYTimelines by: Marina Simonian

In our ongoing commitment to staying on top of major regulatory requirements, gMed is facing a number of

challenging projects in the upcoming years. We wanted to share some of those timelines with you, so that we can

plan together for a successful and seamless implementation of these requirements.

Most of these changes affect the way that e-prescribing information is

communicated to Surescripts and will not affect your daily activities.

However, some changes will be affecting your workflow and will be

visible: such as the need to request and document the patient’s consent

to download their medication history, the ability to send prescriptions to specialty pharmacies, etc. gMed plans to

have the certification in place by second quarter of 2013 and have all clients upgraded to the new version before the

end of the summer, well in advance of the October 1, 2013 deadline.

Surescripts 10.6 certification, deadline: October 1, 2013

Meaningful Use 2014 certification, deadline: January 1, 2014

The entire healthcare industry is tremendously affected by this upcoming change.

gMed will be ready to transition to ICD-10 well in advance of the October 1, 2014

deadline, as we want to ensure that there is sufficient time provided to all of our

clients to train, test and familiarize themselves with this radically new paradigm. We

strongly encourage you to consider completing Meaningful Use attestations for Stage

2 in the first or second quarter of 2014, to leave ample time to focus on training your

staff and transitioning your entire organization to ICD-10.

ICD-10, deadline: October 1, 2014

This certification will include Stage 2 measures, as well as some of the modified requirements for

Stage 1 measures. As we have reviewed in prior communications, Stage 2 includes various

additional requirements, such as advanced interoperability, clinical quality measure

reporting, patient engagement via Patient Portals, etc. gMed plans to achieve the

2014 certification by third quarter of 2013 and have all clients upgraded to the

new version prior to the end of the year.

ERX Incentive

The following 2013 and 2014

measures will be required for

reporting to CMS by all ASCs. The

reporting will have to take place via

the CMS QualityNet web site,

rather than on the Medicare claim

forms, between July 1 and August

15, 2013.

2013 and 2014:

Safe Surgery Checklist use –

gGastro already allows you to

easily document Safe Surgery

Checklist information. Be sure to

report your checklist use through

the QualityNet site.

ASC volume of selected

procedures – measures the all-

patient volume of select procedure

categories beginning with 2012

data. Gastrointestinal procedures

included in the reporting are:

40000-49999, G0104, G0105,

G0121, C9716, C9724, C9725,

0170T.

You should be able to retrieve this

data from your Practice

Management systems. gGastro

also allows you to retrieve total

numbers by providing some new

reports in gGastro+, version 4.50.

2014:

HEALTH Information Exchange Update

As we work through the extensive and varied testing of

many types of messages from many sources, we can see

that participation in the HIE will give our practices a lot of

great information in a quicker and more integrated fashion. We’re

certain that this will be one more tool in helping to empower the

specialty practice by putting more clinical information at their

fingertips. At the same time, we’re facilitating putting their

invaluable clinical decisions in the hands of other providers in the

community, helping to ensure that their patients get the best

possible quality of care from everyone who participates.

For more information on HIE, visit:

The CMS-qualified AGA

Digestive Health Outcomes

Registry® provides clinicians

with an easy and inexpensive way

to report on the hepatitis C

measures group as part of the

CMS Physician Quality Reporting

System (PQRS). Using the registry,

a physician can potentially earn a

0.5 percent bonus on all Medicare

Part B allowable charges for

calendar year 2012. Starting in

2013, however, not participating

in PQRS will lead to a Medicare

penalty on all Part B charges.

Physicians can estimate their

potential bonus payment using the

registry's online Medicare bonus

calculator.

Providers wanting to use the AGA

Registry to submit to CMS for the

2012 PQRS have until Friday, Jan.

25, 2013 to enroll, and until

Friday, Feb. 1, 2013 to enter their

patient data.

“The AGA Registry enables

practices to directly submit data to

the Physician Quality Reporting

System for the hepatitis C measures

group, with the potential of earning

Medicare bonuses. In addition,

payors have shown interest in

using the AGA Registry to

acknowledge, and possibly

financially reward, high-quality

providers. AGA recently launched

a program with UnitedHealthcare

and expects other payors will

follow suit.” says Michael

Weinstein, MD, Chair, AGA

Digestive Health Outcomes

Registry Management Board.

Earning the 2012 physician quality

reporting bonus through the AGA

Registry is much easier than using

claims-based physician reporting,

which requires billing codes and

submitting data for 80 percent of

eligible patients. Physicians who

use the registry need only to

successfully report on 30 unique

patients aged 18 and over with

chronic hepatitis C. Additionally,

physicians who do not see at least

30 chronic hepatitis C patients per

year can report on at least 80

percent of their patients, provided

that they have seen at least 16

patients with chronic hepatitis C

within 2012, or at least 8 patients

during either half of the year.

Additional benefits of using

the registry for submission

of data include:

• Improve patient care – you can

monitor patient interaction, track

interventions, identify and address

gaps in quality of care and

measure quality outcomes.

• Manage patient populations –

as you enter patient data you will

be able to generate listings of your

patients who are in need of certain

interventions or follow-up.

• Benchmark your practice –

identify practice strengths and

weaknesses by comparing clinical

data from other practices.

• Enhance quality and practice

efficiency – built-in quality checks

help reduce errors and improve

the likelihood of qualifying for the

0.5 percent bonus payment.
