The Foundation for Excellence in Education Joins Celebration

of National Digital Learning Day

Tallahassee, FL -Today, students, parents, teachers, state leaders and education advocates

from across the country are celebrating Digital Learning Day. This day recognizes the power

of digital learning to improve student achievement and transform education for the 21st

century. Governors, education chiefs, lawmakers and policymakers across the nation are

marking this day by making a historic commitment to pioneer this game-changing reform,

which is the catalyst for creating a student-centered, achievement-based education.

"A quality education can change a life, and digital learning has the power to ensure each and

every student in America has access to a high quality education that prepares them for a

lifetime of success," said former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, chair of the Foundation for

Excellence in Education and co-chair of Digital Learning Now!. "Digital learning is the catalyst

for transforming education. It provides teachers with the tools to customize instruction with

precision, and it allows students to earn credit for what they learn rather than how much time

they spend in the classroom. These interactive and adaptive learning technologies can

ensure that every student advances to the next level when they have mastered the necessary

skills and material, not just when the school year ends."

A decade ago, customizing education for every student was just a dream, but today's

technology allows students to learn in their own style, at their own pace, anytime and

anywhere. In 2010, the Foundation for Excellence in Education launched Digital Learning

Now!, a national public awareness campaign that is building support for reforms to produce

high quality digital learning. The campaign's 10 Elements of High Quality Digital Learning

define the framework for a new paradigm in education, and the Roadmap for Reform: Digital

Learning arms Governors, state education chiefs, lawmakers and policymakers with nuts-and-

bolts policies to transition to a student-centered education that prepares students with the

knowledge and skills to succeed in college and challenging careers.

States' leaders must act today to transform education and provide every student with a

rigorous, high-quality, customized education that will prepare them for success in college and

their careers. The Foundation for Excellence in Education will continue working with states to

transform education for the digital age.

The Foundation for Excellence in Education is igniting a movement of reform, state by state, to transform education for the 21st century economy. Excellence inAction, the organization's flagship initiative, is working with lawmakers andpolicymakers to advance education reform across America.

Folks -1 need your help in getting an accounting for the CCSSO/Chiefs meeting. Can you please reply tothis email today(sorry) and let me know if your chief is attending the CCSSO and also then planning on attending the chiefs meeting onthe 24th?

If yourchiefis planning on attendingboth, then you can readjust yourhotel reservations with CCSSO to accommodatethem to staythe evening of the 24th.

If yourchiefisonly planning on attendingthe chiefs meeting on the 24th, then the Foundation will need to handle thehotel reservations.

Ialso need to know ifyour chief is planning on bringing along any other staffers, and if so, their names for thereservation (or at least how manyfor now), if the Foundationneeds to pickup the room.

Thusthe reason for the urgency on the reply, since we need to know how many rooms to reserve, etc.

Thanks, everyone, for your anticipated quick responses. HAPPY FRIDAY!!!! ©

Chiefs for Change Endorses GREAT ActSupporting Rigorous, Goals-Oriented Teacher and

Principal Training

Washington, DC- Chiefsfor Change, an organization of chief state education officers

representing more than 11 millionstudents nationwide, issued a statement today supporting

the GREAT Act:

"One of Chieffor Change's core principles is that federal law should encourage and reward the

recruitment and retention of excellent teachers and leaders. The GREAT Act, introduced by

Representative Thomas Petri of Wisconsin, will support teacher and principal training

programs that are rigorouslyselective, involveclinicaltraining methods, and tie graduation

from the programs to student learning. We believethe GREAT Act furthers the Education and

Workforce Committee's admirable efforts to spend Title II dollars more effectively, at the state

level, and with an emphasis on outcomes, not process.

"As an organization dedicated to putting students first through visionary education reform, we

support legislation like the GREAT Act that improves student achievement and provides states

the incentives to make bold reforms. The GREAT Actwillallowstates to create a pipeline of

high-quality teachers and schoolleaders who can measurablyimprovethe performance of

their students. There is an appropriate federal role in incentivizingstates to innovate teacher

and leader training. As we've seen with the Raceto the Top, clear incentives can generate

dramatic change. The GREAT Act provides states the incentives they need to reform."

Chiefsfor Change is a coalition ofstateschoolchiefs and leaders thatsharea zealfor

educationreform. Together, theyprovide a strong voicefor boldreform on thefederal, state

and local level. It is committed toputting childrenfirst through bold, visionary education

reform thatwill increase student achievement andpreparestudentsfor success in colleges

and careers. Visit www.ChiefsforChanae.ori for more information about Chiefsfor Change.

The Foundation for Exceiience in Education is igniting a movement of reform, state by state,to transform education for the 21st century economy. Thanks for this - let's switch to the 10:10 flight - it gets me there a little earlier if they start earlier, but I don't want togo the night before or at the crack of dawn.

Thanks!

From: Valliere, GeorgetteSent: Friday, February 177 2012 3:26 PMTo: Bowen, StephenSubject: RE: possible extension of 3/24 meeting time

Here are the flights for the 24th (unless you wantto leave on the 23rd (late)?

US Airlines

3/24Flight #3157Leave Portland, ME at 6am, get to DC at 7:59 am (but that's getting up awfully early to get to the airport)!!!

Or

Flight #3112Leave Portland, ME at 10:10am, get to DC at 11:49 am (which would make you late for their meeting anyway, becausethey want to start at 10 am)

OR leave on the 23rdUSAir Flight #3269Leave {Portland, ME at 5:12 pm and arrive in DC at 7pm -that's the latest flight I see), which means Iwould need tobook another night at the hotel for you

Let me know if you want to just leave things the way they are and I'll let them know OR.... Let me know if youwant to make changes, and if so, what Thank you!
