A few questions:

1. Is the zoom on the checkboxes also affected or it is just the positioning?

2. Can you try switching printers to another one and see if the same behavior occurs? This couldnarrow down the problem to Excel or the printer driver.

3. Do you notice any other print preview oddities with any other of the Microsoft Office programs?

Hi Will,

Yes the scale of the boxes does change when the checkboxes move. They get much smaller. I havethe checkboxes in column K and they move to column G and they get so small I can barely seethem.

I have changed to different printers, both Ricoh printers mess up the document (when using printpreview), the HP 5siMX printer messes up, but HP 8100 PS printer does not mess up the documentand Adobe PDF previews don't mess up the document. We could use the HP 8100 but the qualityis poor, and can not deliver documents with that quality. I have messed around with printprocessors and still haven't had any luck. Ricoh even had me try a Lanier print drivers and still noluck.

To be honest this checkbox item is not the only problem I am having, its just the biggest. Someitems are just hard to put into words, without seeing the file I am using.

I can't say that I have noticed any other problems with any other Microsoft programs.

Can I somehow share/email the file?

Thanks so much,

Graham

Hi Will, no this hotfix didn't work. The hotfix said "there are no products affected by this packageinstalled on this system".

Not exactly a straight forward message, however I have come to expect that. :)

Since the first posting, the problem is not just with print preview, the problem also occurs if youprint without previewing the document. So I have emailed the file to Will.

Thanks Sally but the answer to our problem really isn't answered. This problem is costing mycompany $$$ if you (by that I mean myself or co-workers) fail to save the document beforeprinting, and then close the file and don't save it after printing. After printing several pages of thedocument become un-recoverable (without unprotecting the tab and manually moving andre-sizing every checkbox which there is 30 of these checkboxes), and you have to delete the taband re-do the work.

I am sure this problem will get more attention once my customer upgrades to 2010 office, currently they feel it is my problem, because they can't simulate the problem on their 2007 excel32x system.

The above mentioned problem is not the only problem I am having,I feel I should mention them asmaybe all of these problems may be connected or not.

#2 there is a drop down box for (cell A,9) next to the text "cabinet Type" and this text prints largerwith this version of office over the 07 version. Again I can't find where I can change how large thetext prints.

#3 Most if not all the boxes on the left side of the sheet that have borders (dotted line borders)don't print, which is not a big problem as I have found that if I change the line type they do printcorrectly. But why????

Well installing 2007 excel does not work either. 2007 just removes all macro functions when itopens the file, and calls it a repaired file,(haha*$#^),,,,, and gives you no way to run them. Spent anhour on the phone with a Ricoh printer tech. He is just as baffled as I am. I can create a Adobe PDFwithout any problems, checkboxes stay in place. If I use an old HP 8100 N printer it works withoutmoving the checkboxes, but the quality is poor(very old printer)

So is anyone looking into this? HELP PLEASE

I am having a similar issue. I did notice that the issue was happening with lexmark black and whiteprinters. When I went to our color lexmark it printed ok. There is a hot fix that everyone points tobut it was for Excel 2002 and does not work with 2010. (KB2204028) I have tried changing theFormat Control to all the different Object Positioning boxes and that did not work. I also triedchanging the printer settings to different qualities and resolutions (600 to 2400). The color printerwe have here (C534 dn) is set for 4800 dpi.

As of now, we still have no solution, except to print to Adobe PDF. However I am sure that if Will (Mod Above) finds a fix it should get posted here.

I think we found a solution for our Lexmark printers. Our color printer had a PostScript driverinstalled. The black and white printers had PCL drivers. When we installed the PostScript driverson the black and white printers, all models worked. That probably does not help you with yourolder model printers. Sounds like you already tried to get the PS drivers and can't. Ricoh doeshave some PS drivers on their site but I do not know what model printer you are using.

I have the same problem.  I tried all of the sugges ons above (unhide objects, repair, hot fix and printer drivers) and

these did not work.  The only way to fix the problem for me was to move back to Excel 2007 (with service pack 2).

This fixed all the problems I was having.  I have provided some detail below about the problem and what steps I

took to analyse and fix in the hope that this may help resolve the problem in Excel 2010.

Background:

I have a spreadsheet originally created in Excel 2002.  It contains a number of List Boxes, Scroll Bars and Drop Down

boxes.  On upgrading to Excel 2010 and conver ng the file to an .xlsm I encountered a number of problems with

these controls, including the problem described above.  Note, I upgraded straight to 2010 not via 2007.

My development system is Vista, Office 2010 and a Cannon MP830 printer.

The problem:

As described above if I do a print or print preview the controls get smaller and move le .  Each  me I repeat the

print or print preview the size gets smaller and the controls move further le .  I also have two controls that move

significantly upwards (as they are well down the sheet), sugges ng that the movement is actually propor onally up

and le  (each  me I do a print or print preview).

I tried the suggested fixes above (unhide objects, repair, hot fix and printer drivers).  None of these fixed the

problem.

Observa ons:

1) This problem only happens if I print or print preview with more than one worksheet selected.  If I print or print

preview with a single worksheet, the problem does not occur.

2)  I tested the same spreadsheet in Excel 2007 on a different machine (running XP 2002 SP3 and a different printer)

and the problem did not occur.

3)  I tested the spreadsheet on a different system running Excel 2010 (XP 2002 SP3) with a different printer and the

problem s ll occurred.

4)  I removed Office 2010 from my development machine and installed Office 2007 and this fixed all problems (see

other problems below).  I also needed to install service pack 2 for Office 2007 as 2007 had a known problem

handling .xlsm files containing macros.  Without SP2 the spreadsheet stopped working totally as the macros were

disabled by Excel.  SP2 fixed this problem.

The above clearly suggests that this is an Excel 2010 problem, is not a problem in 2007 and does not seem to be OS

or Printer dependent.

Other problems:

Just to complete the story, the other problems I had with controls a er upgrading to 2010 are:

1) Some of the Scroll bars and Drop Down Boxes gained a shadow.  This did not happen to all just some.  I could find

no way to remove the shadow and had to delete the control and create fresh controls.  The controls did not have a

shadow in the 2002 version.

2)  When selec ng an item from within a list box, the border of the list box moves slightly (like a nudge).  It returns

to its original posi on but the move looks strange.  This movement does not happen if the zoom for the sheet is set

at 100% but any other zoom shows the movement.  I have not been able to fix this other than to keep the zoom at

100% (a work around).  This problem does not occur in Excel 2007.

I hope this helps with the analysis, understanding and resolu on of the problem as I am struck and will have to

revert to 2007 if this problem cannot be resolved in 2010 (and will need to advise my clients to stay away from

2010).

I too am having a problems with checkboxes shifting as we just upgraded to Office 2010. Everytime I think there is a pattern to the problem, it changes. It definately relates to print previewand saving the file. It appears fine then I save it and reopen and the problem is there. The defaultof the page setup appears to go to 95% scaling and then I adjust it to no scaling and the problemgoes away until I save?!!? This has been sooo frustrating so I finally changed all the checkboxes towhere I thought they should go and then they shifted again. I have also played with the formatcontrol options to no avail.

Well folks as of now, the guys at Microsoft are working on this problem, as that is what Will hasemailed me. He said that it has been raised to a tier 3 engineer, which was on 3-15-2011. So nofixes as of right now. Over here we have been reduced to making sure you save the documentbefore printing or print preview, and then NOT saving after the print job. As soon as somethinghappens I will make sure to post any updates here.

ExcelJunkie, thanks for the additional input, I hope that Will forwards that info the theengineer(s)techs.

Thanks for finding the trick for a work-around for now. I hadn't narrowed down the issue. I justtried it and it appears to work so at least we can continue to use this fiel(in a restricted manner). Iwas ready to de-install 2010... Thanks again!

That is good news.

Having gone through the pain of “down‐grading” to 2007 we have decided to s ck with 2007 and will reassess once

Microso  create a fix for this problem.  For various poli cal and commercial reasons it is not viable for us to have a

product that could so easily become “corrupted” (controls seemingly randomly moving all over the place would be

seen as a corrup on by our clients).  The nature of the informa on contained in the spreadsheet also makes it very

hard to start from scratch if the file does become corrupted.

I will happily test the fix once available and then make an assessment about moving back to 2010.

Graham, it sounds like you are a fellow Aussie ... good luck to you, Johno, PJPerry, Will and others that have

contributed to allowing me to sleep again.  It’s nice to know it wasn’t something I was doing and its good to have a

stable product again.

Hi Will,

There is another problem that I have encountered could be or could be not related to this one. Wehave an Excel sheet with set of ActiveX buttons. After printing or Exporting to PDF the buttonslocation is changed other the sheet and they seems to become inactive - it is impossible to pressany of them and generally they look more like icons then clickable objects. I am not sure if thisthread is a proper place and the problems are related or I should start a new one?

Any news yet? I'm having the same problem, but we are (and have been) using Excel 2007 on ourmachines. I'm so fed up with redoing the checkboxes that I'm about to just remove them, whichwill make the whole file far less user friendly. But I can't keep redoing the checkboxes every time auser prints it.

Here is a quote from someone working on the fix.

"unfortunately the fix has been delayed a bit because of overlapping schedules with the release ofService Pack 1 (SP1) for Office 2010 this month.  So we had to hold off the tes ng pass originallyplanned to make sure SP1 releases on  me, and have rescheduled the tes ng pass for later this monthand running into July.  So the final fix schedule has been moved out by at least a month.  No final datehas yet been set, so I’m afraid I cannot give you an exact release  me, but it won’t be in June as wefirst thought."

Could you make the files read only so after the user prints the document and then closes it, it doesnot save. Not saving after the print job is the only thing that works for us. We always SAVE BEFOREPRINTING AND NOT AFTER. Super pain in the a$$, but it is better than re-doing checkboxes.

Hope that helps a little.

We started having the check-box-moving-after-preview/print issue on our Office 2002 afterinstallation of Windows XP SP3. It's been a year or so. In the beginning, the issue affected onlyexisting xls document. When we tried to create new ones, the issue did not occur. However, it isnow affecting newly recreated xls document as well.

I started having the issue for over 6 months. I was trying a few things and none of those could fixthe problem. I didn't use the check box enough that I kept on pursuing a fix.

Early on this morning, I was working on a new form/document. And this problem re-ignited myurge to find a way around it. I was fiddling around and the check boxes stopped moving!

This is a quick fix - well, not exactly quick if you have a large number of check boxes. You may needto run a script or something - but it does seems to have fixed the problem for me. Try it out onone check box and see what happens. Hopefully it does the same wonder for you as well.

-->Enter Design Mode.-->Right click on the problematic check box.-->Format Control.-->Properties tab.-->Check the "Move and size with cells" radio button. (FYI, I had "Don't move or size with cells"on.)Good luck, y'all.

I think I have a similar problem with an Excel 2010 application I am developing. I am using VBA toselect a range of worksheets, and then activating print preview. The preview and printing work finebut when printing is done, or I close preview, I find the last worksheet in the sected range has allshape objects, text boxes and tick boxes considerably enlarged. This happens withe all objects onthe sheet, regardless of whether they are set to print or not.

I tried messing about with the 'Move and size' properties, as suggested by a previous contributor, but it had no effect.

I am assuming this is the same problem and I going to have to wait until a fix is available.

Because I am using VBA to drive this the result is predictable so I may have to use VBA to resize theobjects on the last sheet once printing is done.

This is a complete drag. I'm glad the promptings are still happening.

Upgraded to 2010 a few weeks ago and agreed to crank out some forms.

I suppose i will create a macro prints it to PDF then somehow prints it to another printer.

I thought I had to be missing something... no just a bug.

Thanks everyone for sharing your knowledge on this issue.

I was emailed late October they were going to try to roll-out a fix with the usual update that cameout. Also I was emailed fixes, and I am not sure how to post those fix files here, and there is abunch of other stuff you need to do to the registry on top of using the new excel.exe and supportfiles which was sent to me. What I can share with you is that with all of the changes I have made tomy system, for the most part works, but I do get some errors. After the changes, viewing a printpre-view doesn't corrupt the file, but now the actual print job sometimes corrupts the file. So as Ihave told all of my people, save before printing and don't save after printing. Save, print, closewithout saving, re-open and continue to work on the file.

For a small fee (LOL) bring your PC with the problem here and I can fix as best I can.

For you folk having problems with 2007 excel. There is a fix, I can't remember where to find itthough. Keep looking I know it is out there somewhere since I had to fix it in that version as well. In2010 excel is a bit more difficult.

We having a similar problem with checkboxes. We have an Excel worksheet that has nearly 60checkboxes. When we upgraded to Excel 2010 is when we noticed that it was no longer printingcorrectly. However, I've done some printing on different printers and noticed that it printsdifferently on a Lexmark than it does on an HP or a Xerox.

On a Lexmark printer, the checkboxes stay in line with the cell and the sheet looks correct. On theHP 8150 and the Xerox WorkCentre, the checkbox and the corresponding text expand horizontallyso that the checkbox is in the correct location, but the text that goes with the checkbox has movedto the right so much that it has moved out of the cell and is truncated by the next cell.

I'm looking at the security update. maybe that will fix this. I'm hoping.

The security patch didn't fix it. Actually when I tried to install the patch, it said that it was alreadyinstalled.

Security Update for Microsoft Excel 2010 (KB2466146) does not fix the problem.I installed Excel 2010 and applied this security update but the problem still exists. I also installed allother recommended updates to Office 2010 and to Excel and the problem persisted. The Cause:The problem is caused when selecting multiple tabs/sheets of a book and doing a “Print”, “PrintPreview” or going to a “File” menu function which shows a print preview.I have also identified that the problem can be triggered with a single tab/sheet selected and if theactive cell is not within the Print Area and you do one of the above (Print, Print Preview or FileMenu).Having done one of the above if you then click on a drop down box, the image for the drop downbox will appear to the left and up (not where it should be). The more you do one of the above, thefurther the image moves left and up. The drop down box appears in the correct place on thescreen until you click on it.Good news:The fault can be remedied by going to the effected tab/sheet (selecting only a single tab/sheet),make sure the active cell is in the print area and then do a Print Preview, Print or File Menu again. This has the effect of resetting the image back to its correct location … but this must be donebefore you do a save.As noted by previous contributors to this forum the problem is also fixed if you exit the bookwithout doing a save.Remedy:So there are two remedy’s:1) Select any effected tab/sheet (only one at a time), ensure the active cell is in the print area anddo a print Preview, Print or File Menu action.2) Exit the Book without doing a saveThe Bad News:As noted above, if you do not undertake a remedy before doing a save, the problem will becomepermanent and the drop down box will now appear on the screen in the new position, even beforeclicking on it. The only way to fix the problem at this stage is to manually move the drop downbox back to where you want it. This is not acceptable for me and others that produce sheets to beused by non-power users.Summary:The problem is not fixed and is still caused by doing a Print, Print Preview or File menu when theactive cell is not within the print area (selecting multiple tabs means that the active cell will not bewithin the print area on a number of sheets).Hope that helps someone.

Hello,

Like most of the above registrations I HAD the same problem I created my Excel and addedcheckbox, when I go the the print preview or print the excel, the text is close to or in the checkbox.

I did 2 simple test and also a fix that was acceptable for me.

Test1:- in the problem excel I created a new tab and on Cell B2 I created a new checkbox and changedthe text.- next I went to the print preview and to my surprise there was NO PROBLEM with the checkboxtext not in Preview and not when printed.

The only difference that I could see is that on the tab that had the problem the text of thecheckbox was smaller (scaled)

Test2:- On my problem tab I when the print preview their is only 1 thing that adjusts the scale of thepage (Fit sheet on one page)- For test I set this to (do not scale) and like I suspected my problem with the checkbox was gone.

So most of you are thinking this guy is telling us to rebuild our excel from scratch and make surewe do not go outside the page lines. I am telling you that unless Microsoft fixes this scalingproblem that I used the following solution.- I change my text size by 1- I had 2 collums that where outside the page I counted the total point divided them with total thenumber of used collums an reduced all the collums with that amount of points- I did the same with the the number of lines.- I still had to make some adjustments to some cell but not too mutch.- I adjusted the Zoom to 120% so it would look the same for everyone that will use this Excel.

For me this was acceptable I hope this helps someone else too.

This worked for me. Thanks Mr White Wolf. I just resized one of the columns (I was able to reduceits size without a problem) and then the column that was off the page moved back on the pageand the sheet prints fine now. Both the checkbox and the label print inside the cell.

Thanks!

To resolve all of the known scenarios you want to install the April 2012 CU for Excel and add tworegistry keys. Without the registry keys the HotFixes will not work. The HotFix requires the registrykeys MultiSheetPrint and LegacyAnchorResize to be added to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Excel\Options

The following KB article documents the solution.

2598310 A button form control is displayed incorrectly in a workbook after you view the printpreview of the workbook in Excel 2010http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2598310/EN-US

Another key which you could test is MultiSheetLegacyPrint from prior similar HotFixes.

No, does not fix the problem.

I installed the Hotfix and added the registry entries (MultiSheetLegacyPrint andLegacyAnchorResize) as described above but still have problems as follows.

I am using Vista (SP2), Office 2010 (SP1) and Excel 14.0.6120.5000 SP1 MSO (14.0.6112.5000)

I have a test spread sheet I use for testing this error. It has three sheets with a few drop downboxes, a list box and a spinner. After I install the Hotfix I observe the following:

1) On sheet 1 I have a List Box and two Drop Down boxes. After I do the print preview all threecontrols have almost disappeared (very small and opaque), but if I click on one of them, all threeappear and work fine. They do not disappear again. This seems to be an improvement because atleast after they reappear then are OK to use.

2) On sheet 2 I have just one Drop Down box. After print preview it displays all the issuesdescribed above and does not fix itself. So no change, no improvement.

3) On sheet 3 I have a spinner. This displays no problems.

Happy to make my test spread sheet available to Microsoft if that helps. It consistently reproducesthe problem.

I also have this problem. Can't wait for a genuine fix from Microsoft.

I wonder what the root cause of the problem is?

I too am having the same issue with Excel 2010. After Print Preview, the objects on one of mysheets are huge. Though their properties (scale, width, height) do not reflect that. I have spent a lotof time having to rework/work around issues that surfaced after upgrading to Excel 2010. :-(

Well here is a good one.....

We applied the MultiSheetPrint hotfix which did resolve the problem of:

1. go to print preview

2. go back to tab with Activex Controls

3. Selecting a control caused it to shift on the page.

BUT it causes a whole other issue:

Now when we print preview and scale to fit columns to one page, everything resizes to fit EXCEPTthe controls! We verified this by using PPreview on one machine with out the MSP hotfix where itscaled fine and then tried to preview after applying the fix. This was undenably the cause.

To clarify - it only only causes the print preview and printed output to be 'messed' up but theactual working tab is not impacted.

Now Print preview only works with .PDF as far as scaling all content correctly.

That happens to us too, and if you zoom in and then zoom back out, the sheet should look normalagain. However its better than it corrupting the entire document we use.

I tell the guys at the office, save before printing, close without saving and then re-open thedocument for revisions.

I have been hoping that one of these updates would "fix" the problem. Its been a year and half thatI brought this up to Microsloffft for resolution.

What seem to work for me is to group checkboxes together (in case you have at least two).

This problem has been going on for about two full years now and there is still no legitamate fix???What the hell is up with that? Does anyone know of to move the check boxes back to their originalposition? It is a very annoying process to do it manually when you have 100+ check boxes pertab....

After 'ctrl'+click selecting and moving over 100 check boxes. again. and again. and then nudgingthem back into place, I thought I would check back here, obviously, this is not corrected, and I ammaking the gut wrenching decision to eliminate the boxes while maintaining the programming asbest as possibe, and will now use text rather than the check boxes to drive my spreadsheetsactions....this after just learning that the Icon set conditional formatting will now allow relativereferences and having to go back and reformat all the conditions to the full cell shading (whichDOES allow relative references)

I cannot help but ask the question..."Is it me? OR does it seem like 2010 should be renamed1010....the Icon set conditional formatting and (to stay on topic), the check box controls are thingsthat make Excel such a powerful application, and I am sad to say that we have decided, afterspending over $1500 (a LOT for a small business) to upgrade to 2010, to go backward and beginremoving suspect elements in the interest of simply having workable files. We cannot afford tospend any more time correcting balky check boxes, and we cannot rely on the files we are seeingnow... We expect bugs and glitches, but for something this fundamental to the use of Excel overthe years, this just makes me sad. That the problems occurred is forgivable ( we are notunrealistic), but the fact that it has remained a problem so soooo long, is quite frankly, anenormous disappointment.

There a trick to fix this by resizing the page.

add below codes to your sub "Private Sub Workbook_Open()" or other opening/activation eventfor the sheets(change the size 85 to what ever size you want for your form)

ActiveWindow.Zoom = 100 ActiveWindow.Zoom = 85 ActiveWindow.ScrollColumn = 1

This has fixed my problem and it's the easiest solution

if you use macro to print, this need to be added into your coding(for each sheet) after each print aswell
