OverviewOne of the benefits of the ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) route is that completion of each stage from Foundation level right up to Professional stage, is recognised with an Award.

ACCA’s CAT (Certified Accounting Technician) award is an internationally recognised award made up of 4 stages; each awarding the student with a certificate or diploma based on modules completed at that stage.

→ Introductory Certificate in Financial and management Accounting

→ Intermediate Certificate in Financial and management Accounting

→ Diploma in Accounting and Business

→ Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) Qualification

Who is it for?Students can come from different backgrounds. Some may have experience working in bookkeeping & accounts and want a formal qualification, others are looking to change careers or perhaps have recently left school. Whatever stage you’re at, the CAT Qualification can help activate your career in accounting.

What kind of work can I do with this qualification? You could work in the following types of roles:

→ An accounting role in a small to medium-sized organization.

→ A financial reporting, financial support or supervisory role in a larger organization.

→ A financial supervisory or management role in accounts payable and/or receivables.

→ A financial role in fixed-asset accounting.

→ A financial shared service centre.

→ An accounting technician role in a commercial organization.

How will I learn? The CAT programme will be delivered on line, enabling you to learn at home – reading, watching or listening to course materials supplied, completing assignments and participating in online discussion forums with regular support from an online tutor. Learning takes place through recorded lectures and tutorials, all of which come complete with study notes and textbooks. Assessment is provided throughout the course via regular assignments and mock examinations.

How long will it take to complete? The course will run over 2 years. Students can sit most of the exams on demand as computer-based exams at the ACCA licenced exam centres around the country. Students can also choose to sit paper-based exams in June and December.

What happens when I finish? After completing the CAT Qualification, students can continue their studies with the ACCA Qualification and work towards becoming a qualified chartered certified accountant.

Pre-requisitesAs this course is delivered through the medium of online learning, all prospective students must be IT literate.

Where a student has no qualifications, he/she will be expected to complete all three levels of the technician examinations. Certain prior qualifications may entitle the student to exemptions from some or all papers. However, even with exemptions, the student will have to satisfy the necessary training requirement to complete the CAT Qualification as a whole.

A pre-course selection process may be required to assess the students’ level of verbal and numeric aptitude and ability.

Are there any fees? The CAT programme, delivered through eCollege, is free of charge to individuals on Jobseeker Benefit or Jobseeker Allowance. The fee-waiver also applies to the exams leading to certification. This is available for the first exam sitting only. Funding is not available for repeat exams. Your local Employment Services / Intreo Office can provide more information on eligibility.

How do I register? If you are interested in registering for the course you should contact your local Employment Services / Intreo office to make an appointment. This is necessary to determine your eligibility and ensure the course matches your current skills.
