Editor's LetterI really have enjoyed working with everyone with this Vintage Affair Wedding Issue. As my husband & I celebrate our Wedding Anniversary, I realized that all people, both menand women, want to be beautiful, especially on their Wedding Day. When reflecting in the mirror, we all tend to be so critical of ourselves, including myself. God put us here to shine and work for him, and it is easy to get so caught up in the ways of the world and wanting to look like Supermodels or Hercules. Working with wedding shows, models, brides and all walks of life, I see it everyone! I encourage you all to stand in front of the mirror and sure, go ahead and say out loud What!, How did I gain weight?, I hate my nose. or whatever it is you dont like about yourself. When you are done with that, take another look and notice your hands, your eyes, your mouth, your legs and body overall. Look at the amazing things that God has given each and every one of us, and try and embrace your body and know that you are beautiful.

Monarch Butterfly Endangered

The Monarch Buttery population, as well as numerous other animal species, is suering the eects of man-made events as well as the consequences of the global warming phenomenon.

Scientists assert that the global climate change may cause the Monarchs over-wintering sites in Mexico to become wetter, and the spring and summer breeding areas of the United States west coast and mid-western agricultural belt to become warmer. As temperatures become too warm for this species, their summer migrations may take them even further northward.

Will the Monarch Butteries migrate a further distance south to the current locations? Since researchers started keeping records in the early 1900s the winter sites have not changed. Temperature increases cause possibly cause changes in their migratory patterns.

The Monarchs winter home in the mountains of central Mexico is greatly threatened today by tremendous logging operations of the Fir tree forests. This deforestation and increased agricultural development in Mexico is causing great concern, and adding to the outcry that the Monarch Buttery is becoming an endangered species.

Along the populous areas of southernCalifornia many species of the Monarch Butterys roosting trees are disappearing, although the Eucalyptus tree is increasing in numbers for the butteries. Local concerned groups are encouraging the conservation of trees for roosting, and the re-planting of milkweed plants for the females to lay eggs on in late winter and early spring.

When semi-dormant in the winter the Monarchs need dense tree cover. And in the spring and summer breeding season they need abundant availability of milkweed plants.

Although in North America the Monarch Butteries are not considered an endangered or threatened species, they are highly protected under law, especially around their wintering roosting sites.http://monarch-buttery.info/Endangered.html

Vegetarian Pinto Bean Sloppy Joes

Ingredients2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil2 medium carrots, sliced1 large white onion, sliced4 cloves garlic, minced3 tablespoons chili powder2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar1 cup dry pinto beans, soaked (see Tip)1 large red bell pepper, diced1 8-ounce can no-salt-added tomato sauce1/2 cup water2 tablespoons reduced-sodium soy sauce or tamari2 tablespoons tomato paste4 cups very thinly sliced green cabbage1 medium zucchini, chopped1 cup corn, fresh or frozen (thawed)3 tablespoons honey mustard1 tablespoon brown sugar1 teaspoon salt10 whole-wheat hamburger buns

PREPARATIONHeat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add carrots and onion; cook, stirring occasionally, until starting to brown, about 8 minutes. Stir in garlic and chili powder; cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 15 seconds. Remove from heat; stir in vinegar and scrape up any browned bits.Coat a 6-quart slow cooker with cooking spray. Drain and rinse the soaked beans; transfer to the slow cooker. Stir in bell pepper, tomato sauce, water, soy sauce (or tamari) and tomato paste to combine. Spread the carrot-onion mixture over the bean mixture, but dont stir the two together. (The layer on top helps keep the beans submerged during cooking so they dont dry out.) Cover and cook on High for 5 hours or Low for 9 hours.Stir in cabbage, zucchini, corn, honey mustard, brown sugar and salt; cook on High for 30 minutes.Serve the mixture on buns.

Beyond Your Average Fairy TaleFor as long as I can remember, I have always loved movies. In fact the very first animated film I can recall seeing in theaters is The Little Mermaid. Youve all seen it Im sure... Ariel meets her Prince Charming, agrees to give up her voice and her life under the sea with her family, all for what is believed to be everlasting love. She does all of this without a second thought and lives blissfully in love forever, sanscomplications. At least thats what the average fairy tale leads us to believe. In most fairy tales you only see the beginning in general the happy. What about the middle?? Isnt this the most important part?? After all, it is the struggle that usually gets us to our happily ever afterright?? The idea of the typical happily ever after often portrayed in movies can leave some people feeling confused when their story falls short. This is true for one girl, anyway.

Once upon a time in Alabama, there lived a very carefree 25 year old girl just enjoying life. Lets call her Shay. Like many young ladies her age, Shay had plans, dreams, goals, and she was busy working towards them. Things seemed to be right on track since she was in her last semester of college. Shay was on her way, until one day when she was struck with some very devastating news. What had initially appeared to be a fibroid cyst in her left breast turned out to be, you got it, The BIG C. In less than five minutes; Shay was told that she had cancer, would need surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and was given details about harvesting eggs. Shay was in utter shock and disbelief. She felt as if she had completely left her body and was watching this patient/doctor conversation from the outside. Believe it or not, Shay was so numb that she never even cried. She seriously waited for the phone call that would say there was a mix-up with her test results. Sure there was a lot of cancer in her family, but she was only 25. How could this be?

The following week Shay had a lumpectomy, followed by chemotherapy and radiation. A little less than a year later, she was put into remission. Happy to be alive and considered healthy in the eyes of oncology, Shay proceeded with her life as planned and went back to school. She wanted to put cancer behind her and forget it had ever happened. Not long after all of this, Shay met and became engaged to a nice guy. As they planned their wedding, she finished her degree in Education. During this planning period in her life, she developed an unusual discomfort in her sternum. What started as a minor pain without any necessary medication quickly developed into more.

Months of complaining to her doctors went on only for her to be told she had normal arthritis as a result of treatment. Despite being blown off by doctors for her concerns, Shay continued to be persistent. She needed more answers. If this was indeed arthritis, surely an orthopedic could help her. Lucky for Shay, she had friends in orthopedics. It only took one quick phone call to a doctor friend to get an appointment that led to the start of some answers. The very next day she had 3D x-rays, a bone scan, and a PET scan. Days later it was con-firmed that the cancer had metastasized to her bones.

These newlyweds were living far from honeymoon bliss.

This daily routine of just barely getting by went on for nearly two years. Its during this crucial time of a marriage that most couples are building a bond that sets the foundation for lasting love. By the time Shay had the ability to even think about being married, her marriage had already dissolved. Just three short years after saying their I dos they said goodbye through a not-so happy divorce decree. Sounds like a sad sob storyhuh? Not soHere is the silver lining and the modern day twist to this happily ever after

The girl in the story is me, Audra Warren, and at almost 34 and nearly nine years after my original diagnosis I am alive, happy, and healthy. What I realized is that for much of my life, I had made some important decisions based on what others thought was best for me and not what my own heart truly wanted. I realized that I married someone who was meant to be in my life for just a season. I have no regrets, but many valuable life lessons. I learned that I know myself better than anyone else. I learned to listen to my inner voice. I learned that happily ever after is more than a wedding or even a marriage. Camp Bluebird oers a unique experience for adult cancer patients. Sponsored by Providence Hospital and the Telephone Pioneers, Camp Bluebird oers recreation,

relaxation, crafts and activities, non-denominational worship services and the opportunity to openly discuss the experiences and emotions associated with cancer

with other survivors. On the last day, as a sign of hope, each camper builds a birdhouse. Family members and close friends are invited to attend the concluding luncheon.

A truly vintage Victorian-inspired custom gown (circa 1973) is a prefect specimen for the currently popular Bohemian Chic movement. The gown would also make an excellent candidate for a modern update by removing the sleeves and neckline.The French lace trimmed cathedral veil is seated on a Juliet cap. Again, a 1970s retro look that has circled back around.

Southern Elegance radiates from pink cascading ruffles with a beaded Alencon lace bodice gown from 1990. The dated sleeves were removed and replaced with romantic sheer lace straps. Accents such as the variegated pink jeweled choker and feathery hair clip are beautiful touches.

1. Be patientFinding your perfect vintage dress takes a lot of patience in

browsing through the racks and displays. Keep in mind that this is not your usual department store where everything you see is new. In vintage stores, it is like looking for a treasure in a sea, you will

never know what you will find unless you really dive into the shelves, racks and even go through piles and piles of used clothes! The fastest way to look for the goodies into every vintage shop is to ask and befriend the salesperson and tell her what you are

looking for in particular. Never insult their garments if you found something that is unreasonably priced just because it has already been used by someone else. If in case you found something that you like but find the dress as too pricey, establish a price that you can both agree on and do not forget to be nice and friendly when

making a negotiation.

2. Sizes do not matter!If you are a size 6 and found something that is one two sizes

bigger than your actual size, have an open mind and try it on. Most people are afraid of trying on a dress whenever they see that the

label is one size bigger than their actual size thinking that they would not want to feel bigger. This is the number one reason

why shop owners tend to take off the clothing tags just so people would actually try the garments on. People in the past were actual-ly smaller and thinner than people of today and so a size 12 might

actually mean that you are a size 16 in vintage stores. Another thing that you should know is that designers have different size

charts and so if you are shopping online, it is best to ask the seller for the exact measurements before buying the dress.

3. If it is beyond repair, do not buy it!A missing button or a broken zipper can be replaced with a new one but a dress that has a musty smell in it is a deal breaker! Not

to mention if the dress looks as if it is about to deteriorate.

4. Watch out for the quality of the dressNo matter how popular the designer of the dress is, it will deterio-rate over time. Examine the dress carefully and look for any signs of weakening. The good news about vintage dresses is that they

are usually worn once thus, the quality of the dress is usually preserved.

Do you want a classic vintage theme or do you want a melange of retro classic and vintage? While vintage will have touches of the early 20th century, a retro-inspired wedding will have those of much later years.

Once you decide the sub-theme, decide on the exact year of decade you want to focus on.

It is important to decide the scope of the theme. Do you want everything in your wedding to coincide with the theme or do you want little whispers of the theme throughout?
