At The Washington Center, we believe that it is a fundamental responsibility of each member of society to help nurture, encourage and develop the next generation of leaders. That is why we exist. The Washington Center Promise

The Washington Center was founded on the belief that the right experience cantransform students’ lives—setting them on a course of achievement, leadership, and civic responsibility. That’s why we immerse qualified college students and professionals in our uniquely intense and productive living, working, and learning program.

The Washington Center delivers more than a semester “away,” coveted internships, and academic credit. It provides an integrated experience that transforms theory into practice, ambition into purpose, and potential into achievement—an experience that transforms. Our programs provide access to four potential paths through the world—government, business, not-for-profit, and international. Each is a distinct experience of matched internships, complementary coursework, and focused relationship building.

We are the largest academic internship program in the country, bringing together civic and business leaders, hundreds of colleges and universities, scores of public and private internship sites, 44,000 alumni, and generous donors.

Together we strive to make The Washington Center accessible to students with diverse backgrounds who will make the most of the opportunity. The Washington Center enables students and professionals to transform their careers and lives through a unique experience; colleges and universities to extend their reach, programmatically and geographically; organizations to connect with a new generation of talent; and its many donors and alumni to support and shape the next generation of leaders.

Funded Programs

Major, multi-year partnership efforts have helped us to develop distinct discipline-based funded programs such as the Ford Motor Company Global Scholars Program–an internship focused on exploring the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals; and the U.S.-China Bilateral Trade Internship Program, funded by The Boeing Company.

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice provided keynote remarks for the 2010 Prudential Spirit of Community celebration held at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, in Washington, D.C. on May 1, 2010. Spring semester TWC Prudential Fellows from Taiwan were among those who met with Secretary Rice.


U.S.-China Bilateral Trade Internship Program

In January 2007, The Washington Center received a generous gift from The Boeing Company to create the U.S.-China Bilateral Trade Internship Program. The mission of the program is to promote among students from China and the United States increased understanding of the bilateral relationship between the two countries while obtaining practical skills to become engaged citizens and leaders in their communities.

The program has hosted 60 students over a three year period: 20 students participated in the spring 2008, 20 in spring 2009, and 20 more students in the spring 2010 semester. Ten Chinese applicants from Peking, Tsinghua and Fudan universities as well as ten applicants from University of Washington, California State University and Washington University, were selected to participate in program’s third year in spring 2010.

Participants enrolled in the U.S.-China Bilateral Trade Program experience a rich mix of activities during the semester. These include a full-time internship, four days per week, in the public, private, and non-profit sectors in Washington, D.C.; weekly classes focusing on the U.S.-China bilateral agenda, speakers, panels, site visits, forums and trade simulations.

Ford Motor Company Global Scholars Program

In 2008, The Washington Center received a grant from Ford Motor Company to create The Ford Motor Company Global Scholars Program. The mission of the program is to develop future global leaders in the area of international community development by equipping participants with in-depth knowledge of the U.N. Millennium Development Goals (MDGs); providing them with resources, skills, mentorship and training to promote their professional success in their careers; and by learning ways in which they can contribute to the welfare of their communities.

The Washington Center welcomed its third class of Ford Motor Company Global Scholars during the fall 2010 semester. These students came to Washington, D.C. to participate in the program from Brazil, India, Russia, South Africa, Vietnam, and the United States.

Since 2008, more than 70 students from around the world have participated in the Ford Motor Company Global Scholars Program, including the fall semester 2010 participants.

Prudential Foundation Global Citizens Program

Prudential Financial has been a generous partner to The Washington Center since 1982. In June 2009, The Prudential Foundation provided $1,000,000 to The Washington Center to establish the Prudential Foundation Global Citizens Program. This program provides international undergraduate or graduate students from India, Japan, Republic of Korea, and Taiwan the opportunity to spend a semester in Washington, D.C. in a program that exposes them to the role the U.S. government plays in the context of an increasingly global, interdependent world.

The Prudential Foundation Global Citizens Program sponsors 75 students in the course of three spring semesters, 2010, 2011, and 2012. The Washington Center welcomed its first class of 24 students to the program during the spring 2010 semester.

Designated Scholarship Support

Last year, The Washington Center raised more than $1.3 million for scholarship and program support, through its annual gifts campaign and annual gala. Seventy-five percent of The Washington Center’s 2,000 enrolled students received scholarships in the range of $1,000-$12,000.

John Forkenbrock (center) is the executive director at the National Association for Federally Impacted Schools. He has served as a dedicated internship supervisor for over 15 years. John teaches TWC students and mentors those who intern at his organization. He is an example of a devoted stakeholder who has dedicated time to provide a truly transformational experience for numerous TWC students.


AT&T Foundation Scholarships for Students with Disabilities

Through AT&T Foundation scholarships, The Washington Center has increased the number of students with disabilities that participate in its programs each year by providing them more opportunities to gain valuable work experience. New York Stock Exchange Foundation International Leaders Awards

The New York Stock Exchange Foundation has partnered with The Washington Center for nearly a decade, beginning with support for the organization’s Diversity Leaders Initiative. Most recently, in 2010, New York Stock Exchange Foundation provided a generous grant to The Washington Center to support our International Leaders Awards. This grant created opportunities for international students from Asian countries including India, Japan, Republic of Korea, and Taiwan to access a semester of experiential education in Washington, D.C. To be eligible for this award, students must have an academic background in business or finance, with an interest in working in the public or nonprofit sectors.

Comcast Diversity in Congress Scholarships

Comcast Corporation offers scholarships for undergraduate and graduate diversity students attending Bowie State University, University of Maryland - Eastern Shore, Coppin State University and Morgan State University, four of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities located in the state of Maryland. Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis during the academic year. Comcast scholars intern in the offices of U.S. Senators and Members of the House of Representatives.

Capitol Hill internships provide important stepping stones for careers in the U.S. Congress., where underrepresentation of women and minorities among the ranks of professional leadership staff continues to prevail.


The Center for Global Understanding Scholarships

CFGU students enjoy a seperate Public Affairs Series in addition to the Presidential Lecture Series.

In 2008, The Washington Center formed a partnership with The Center for Global Understanding (CFGU) to increase the civic engagement of Muslim American students through its internship program. This partnership provides CFGU scholars opportunities for civic engagement, professional achievement and leadership development.

The Washington Center and The Center for Global Understanding share a commitment to increasing the involvement of college and university students in the institutions and processes of civil society, as well as increasing students’ cross-cultural understanding. CFGU scholars take part in programming that focuses on issues of special interest to them as Muslim Americans, as well as benefit from the leadership training provided by The Washington Center through its structured academic internship program.

CFGU interns visited Capitol Hill a number of times throughout the summer of 2010. They were recognized by four members of Congress during CFGU’s reception at the Rayburn House Office Building.

The Max and Victoria Dreyfus Foundation is a longtime supporter of The Washington Center, providing transformational gifts that help build our organizational capacity. Among them were contributions to support efforts to track Washington Center alumni, automate student academic records, and to upgrade information infrastructure. The Max and Victoria Dreyfus Foundation has supported the Diversity Leadership Initiative since 1993, making it possible for more than one hundred students to participate in internships in Washington, D.C.

Hearst Endowed Scholarships for Minorities

In the mid-1990s, the William Randolph Hearst Foundations supported the creation of the Hearst Endowed Scholarships for Minorities. The return on investment on this endowment allowed The Washington Center to name Kean College communications major Byron Grant the first Hearst Scholar in 1997. Since then, 31 other Hearst scholarships have been awarded. Many of these scholarship recipients are currently in leadership positions in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors.

Ford Motor Company Fund Diversity Scholarships

The support of Ford Motor Company and the Ford Motor Company Fund spans almost 25 years, beginning with their program support for the Capitol Hill Breakfast Series in 1986. In addition to unrestricted and event sponsorship, the Fund has been instrumental to many important milestones that mark the development of our Diversity Leadership Initiative: it provided seed grants for the creation of the Minorities in Congress Program in 1993 and the NAFTA Leaders Program in 1996. Ford has been steadfast in supporting students of diverse backgrounds with its ongoing scholarship contribution. In 2007, Ford Motor Company approved a $1.0 million grant to develop the Ford Motor Company Global Scholars Program. Ford Motor Company has also served as the presenting sponsor of The Washington Center’s annual gala for the last four years, 2007-2010.

HSC Foundation Scholarships for Students with Disabilities

The Washington Center’s partnership with The HSC Foundation began in 2007 through a challenge grant to help increase participation from students with disabilities in our internship programs. Over the past few years, The Washington Center has successfully leveraged this grant to raise scholarship support for students with disabilities from additional donors. The Washington Center is proud to name some of our ADA compliant apartments in honor of The HSC Foundation’s further commitment to youth with disabilities. In 2010, The HSC Foundation again provided scholarship support to The Washington Center.

Jeffrey Jones Scholarships

Through the generous support of Jeffrey D. Jones, an attorney with Korea’s premier law firm Kim & Chang, The Washington Center established a new scholarship award in 2009 to create opportunities for students from Korean universities to participate in our transformational academic internship program in Washington, D.C. The skills developed and lessons learned through The Washington Center’s program will enable selected students to contribute meaningfully to the ongoing globalization of Korea and the strengthening of economic ties between Korea and the United States. One student were awarded Jeffrey D. Jones Scholarships during 2010.

Kessler Foundation Scholarships

In 2009, The Washington Center received a two-year grant from the Kessler Foundation in West Orange, New Jersey to increase the number of scholarship opportunities for students with disabilities participating in The Washington Center’s programs. The Kessler Foundation’s support provides scholarships to students with disabilities who come to The Washington Center from colleges and universities in the state of New Jersey. Kessler Foundation scholarships were awarded on a competitive basis to two students during 2010.

Washington Center interns are offered up to 50 courses each semester in which students can enroll. Classes take place weekly for three hours throughout the semester, with a class size of no more than 12. Motorola Foundation Scholarships

The Motorola Foundation provided scholarships to students with academic backgrounds in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to participate in The Washington Center’s programs. Scholarship support from Motorola was part of a larger grant that enabled The Washington Center to remodel and strengthen its Science and Technology program over the past two years. This enhanced program provides better internship opportunities and academic support to students from STEM disciplines.

New York Life Foundation Diversity Scholarships

The New York Life Foundation Diversity Scholarships are designated to students interested in careers in the financial services industry. Students are selected through one or the combination of any of the following criteria: relevant major (business, finance, management, accounting, economics, and others); internship with a financial services organization; and/or exposure to specific professional skills relevant to the industry. Since 2002, more than 90 college and university students have received the New York Life Foundation Diversity Scholarships. Twelve scholarships were awarded in 2010.

Triple-S Management Córdova Program Scholarships

Since 2001, Triple-S Management Corporation has supported The Washington Center in order to provide scholarships for Puerto Rican students participating in the Córdova Congressional Internship Program. Through scholarship support, Triple-S has helped to develop the next generation of leaders for Puerto Rico by providing them an academic internship experience in Washington, D.C., in which they test-drive their future careers, develop leadership skills, and consider ways they can give back to their communities. Triple-S was also the presenting sponsor of the 2010 Córdova Program alumni holiday reception in San Juan, Puerto Rico for a second straight year.

Univision Córdova Program

Puerto Rico Secretary of State Kenneth McClintock (second from left) created the Cordova Program into law in 1993 when he was the Minority Leader of the Puerto Rico Senate. He remains an integral part of the program to this day. The program has more than 600 alumni.

Verizon Foundation Diversity Scholarships

Verizon, along with its former companies, has supported students attending The Washington Center for more than two decades. Annual Gala

Through The Washington Center’s annual gala, we secure unrestricted scholarships that support our Civic Engagement Awards and financial aid for students in our honors programs. Further, the annual gala provides opportunities for our university partners to promote their programs in the nation’s capital, to engage with their own alumni in the region, and to strengthen opportunities for more of their students to take advantage of The Washington Center internship experience.

State Partnerships

Last year, The Washington Center partnered with 11 states to provide generous financial aid for students. These efforts promote young talent and will serve to develop state workforces within the coming years.

Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) meets with Washington Center interns from Ohio. Students are given the opportunity to discuss policy issues with members of their state’s congressional delegation through The Washington Center’s Public Policy Dialogues on Capitol Hill Program.


State Scholarship AwardsThe State Relations Initiative has been a cornerstone of The Washington Center’s scholarship efforts since 1995. More than twenty state initiatives have been launched over the last 15 years, allowing hundreds of college and university students to complete internships through the aid of scholarships funded by their state governments. These initiatives have been successful in securing between $2 and $3 million per year in scholarship funding for students, many of whom come from diverse or economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

The Washington Center works alongside state governments to raise various amounts for each student. Typically, state-funded scholarships range from $3,000 to $6,000 and can be available for students attending both public and private universities.

State partnerships play a critical role in The Washington Center’s enrollment, with approximately 40 to 50 percent of domestic enrollment coming from funded states.

Alabama

Established in 2010, Alabama awarded eight scholarships in 2010 to students from:

Federal Partnerships

Studies show that internships provide the best return on investment for recruiting new talent to an organization. Intern recruits tend to stay with their employers longer, minimizing the impact of turnover on the organization. For the last eight years, The Washington Center partnered with numerous federal agencies to address the workforce planning challenges the federal government faces.

The Washington Center has been a link for the federal government to a diverse, highly talented pool of candidates who are interested in becoming the next generation of public servants. In fact, 20-25% of Washington Center students interning in federal agencies are converted to full-time employment while the average conversion rate in the federal government is 6%.

Our internship programs are a distinctive combination of workforce training, experiential education, and leadership development designed specifically for the federal agencies to play a critical role in attracting a highly qualified and diverse future workforce. As a result, participants gain relevant “real world” work experience, make contacts critical to developing their own professional network, and learn to tie classroom learning with their future career. Students also gain a better understanding and greater appreciation for the federal government by exploring future career opportunities through these tailored internship programs.

International Initiatives


CanadaIn 2010, 48 students from Canada participated in The Washington Center programs. Most of these students were able to take part in the experience thanks to the financial assistance of their provincial governments. These provinces include Alberta, Quebec and New Brunswick. Students from the University of Ottawa received a substantial scholarship from their university.

The participants came from the following universities:

Alberta: University of Alberta, University of Calgary, Grand MacEwan University, Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, Concordia University College

New Brunswick: University of New Brunswick Saint John and Fredericton campuses

Québec: Université du Québec à Montréal, Université de Montréal, Université Laval, Université de Sherbrooke, HEC Montréal

Ontario: Queen’s University, Université d’Ottawa, Carleton University, York University

British Columbia: University of Victoria

MexicoIn 2010, 74 students from Mexico participated in The Washington Center’s Governors Program, including students, public servants and young professionals from Veracruz, Queretaro, Chiapas, and Campeche. The participation of all these students was made possible with funding from their respective state governors. During the semester, the students developed a project that impacts and improves the well-being of their regions by attracting investment or by representing a regional product or an industry. Upon the students return to Mexico, these projects are presented to their state governor and some of them are implemented.

In the same year, The Washington Center organized two academic seminars, one for high-ranking officials coming from the Mexican Federal Supreme Court of Elections sponsored by the United Nations Program for Development, and another seminar for cabinet members sponsored by the Governor of the State of Chiapas.

International Partnerships

The Washington Center began developing partnerships with the international higher education community and government sectors in 1999, starting with the State of Tabasco in Mexico. Students from abroad now make up more than 15 percent of our student body. These institutions provide financial support to their students.


BelgiumThe Flemish Minister for Education, Youth, Equal Opportunities and Brussels Affairs and The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars signed a memorandum of understanding under the leadership of Flemish Minister, The Honorable Pascal Smet, to provide scholarship opportunities for eligible students from the region of Flanders to participate in TWC’s programs.

The Minister provided 75,000 Euros in funding support for ten (10) € 7500 scholarships in the fall 2010 and spring 2011 for students from the region of Flanders. Affiliation agreements with Universiteit Gent, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Universiteit Antwerpen, Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Universiteit Hasselt have been signed to allow students from these universities to participate in this initiative. The Washington Center is also in conversations with local and multinational companies with presence in Belgium to obtain additional funds to match the government support for the program. The firm Ackermans & Van Haaren committed € 5,000 for three years and two board members, former U.S. Ambassador to Belgium, The Honorable Alan Blinken (Chairman of the Board) and Mr. Leonard Schrank have contributed funding for additional scholarship support.

This collaboration not only promotes greater mutual understanding between Belgium and the United States, but it also contributes to the cultural enrichment of young people ensuring the development of strong ties between Flemish students and their American and international counterparts. In the fall 2010 seven students came with sponsorship from the Flemish Ministry of Education and one with a private scholarship from the company Ackermans and Van Haaren.

Irene Hirano Inouye, chair of Ford Foundation, and president of the U.S.-Japan Council, was leading a delegation of Japanese-American business executives in Tokyo when the earthquake disaster struck. She spoke of her first-hand experience of the human tragedy to the spring semester students of The Washington Center, which included a number of students from Japan and other Asian countries.
