THE SENTINEL JULY 2014 NEWS FOR MEMBERS & FRIENDS OF FIRST (SCOTS) PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 53 MEETING STREET CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA 29401 A CONGREGATION OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH (USA) ORGANIZED IN 1731 WORKSHOP OF WONDERS was a week of fun – imagining and building with God! Thanks to the 60 volunteers and 140 children that participated in Music, Bible Story, Crafts, Recreation, and Science Experiments! EVERYONE HAD A BLAST! Hopefully you got to see the Fellowship Hall taken over by all the robots! Such creativity in this church! With everyone donning the “colors of the day” – red, green, blue, yellow, and orange, the hallways of the church were so colorful all week. Even the staff joined in wearing the color of the day. Each day the children discovered key Bible teachings that they could incorporate into their lives and share with others. Wonder words in our workshop building included: Imagining with God, Building with God, Growing with God, Working with God, and Walking with God.

HAPPENINGS

New Members Class There will be a one-day New Members Class on Saturday, August 16th, from 9 am to Noon. Breakfast will be served at 9 am. We would love to have all inquirers and potential members come and join us. Please contact the church office if you are interested. We will meet in Room 233 on the second floor of our education building. Contact Jamie at [email protected] for more information.

Heartfelt appreciation We wish to express our humble thanks to all of our Christian friends at First Scots for your outpouring of love thru the multitude of cards, expressions of sympathy, heartfelt messages, phone calls, visits, shared tears, prayers, prayer shawl, flowers and food. Every little thing meant so much, but most of all to know we have so many friends who took the time to reach out to us in our time of distress and loss. Thank you and God Bless you all. Jim & Jan Temple

The Local Missions Committee along with the entire congregation would like to extend our appreciation to Joanne and Mark Zuraw for their tireless leadership and service to Meals on Wheels. For the past five years the Zuraws have acted as coordinators for this local mission outreach and in doing so have touched the lives of many members of the Charleston community. Joanne and Mark plan to continue their ongoing work with Meals on Wheels but they have decided to step down as the overall coordinators effective this July. The Local Missions Committee is excited to announce that Elizabeth Bernat has graciously agreed to coordinate this important ministry.

UPDATES

This month we are introducing a new column “Ask Dr. (Scot)!” Ever wondered how things work behind the scenes of this vibrant congregation? Get your burning questions answered by Dr. (Scot) himself. Simply email your inquiry to Lolli at [email protected] and she will forward them to the doc. Please note “Ask Dr. (Scot)” in the subject line.

Dr. (Scot), how many families are registered members of First (Scots) and how many have committed to the 2014 Stewardship Campaign? - Kindly, NumberCruncher

Great Question, NumberCruncher! First (Scots) is a very active congregation with 828 families registered. To date, we have 493 pledges received. It is important to note that while it appears over half of our membership has pledged to the stewardship campaign, we have some wonderful families where both of the spouses pledge separately and also some children pledge separate from their parents. What a wonderful lesson our young children are learning!
