On Wednesday, November 12 th at the Kapiolani Community College – Ka’ikena Dining Room, we will celebrate EWI Honolulu’s 47 th birthday! EWI of Honolulu was chartered on November 3, 1967. At that time, we became the 54 th chapter in EWI with 24 member firms. EWI of Honolulu has come a long way since 1967. Please join us as we celebrate our current 58 member firms, our charter member firms, and our Past Presidents. You won’t want to miss this! Along with our birthday celebration, we’ll have an LCAM 2014 report and review the budget for 2014-2015. Be present to hear a special report from Wanda Sanchez of member firm, Bank of Hawaii, our 2013-2014 Ways and Means Director, who will give us the final recap of our very recent and successful 19 th annual golf tournament. We are requesting your attendance at this meeting to reach quorum. All of you have already been contacted by the various board members of your respective committees. We are asking you to get engaged, get involved and contribute to your assigned committees. You will definitely get out what you put into EWI. Your excitement and participation will only help to strengthen our organization and our community. Last month, Retention and Recruitment Director, Michelle Nakahara of member firm, Starwood Hotels in Waikiki, organized a new member pau hana mixer. We used this time as an opportunity to network and welcome our new members into our EWI of Honolulu ohana. Our word for the year, excite means “to call to activity.” And, Michelle and her committee did just that. By getting new members involved, we help to strengthen our chapter going forward. As November creeps into the picture, I have to say that I cannot believe how fast the year 2014 has gone by. With the start of the holiday season looming, I am not looking forward to the craziness that each holiday brings….crowded shopping centers, long lines of customers, unbearable traffic and overscheduled weekends. Before the holidays “get to us,” I am asking all of you to take a moment to reflect on all of the things for which you are grateful. November 2014

By: Cora Kim EWI’s 67th Leadership Conference and Annual Meeting, “Build Your Professional Capital” was held September 10 – 14, 2014 in Arlington, VA. EWI of Honolulu was proud to have 10 representatives in attendance at the conference. Many other members from chapters much closer to Virginia were thoroughly impressed at the length of travel we all endured to be present at the conference. The Leadership Caucus began the conference for all incoming Chapter Presidents and Vice Presidents. The main purpose of the Caucus beyond strengthening our leadership skills through a course taught by Lori Giovannoni, Chapter Leadership: Making Great Things Happen, was to exchange ideas with other chapters. Through the Caucus, we were given the opportunity to share what our chapter does well, hear ideas from other chapter leaders, and to begin a support system of Vice Presidents and Presidents to help carry us through the year. EWI of Honolulu has a lot to be thankful for. We are 58 member firms strong with an energized membership willing to go above and beyond to make our chapter a success. Many other chapters were impressed by our numbers and the strength of our activities. Our annual golf tournament and the proceeds that we bring in each year is something that we should definitely take pride in. While we are doing great as a chapter, there is always room for improvement. One task that Vice President Maegan Brandt and I will try to tackle this year is attaining the Chapter Standards of Excellence designation. Two chapters attained this status this year – EWI of Wichita and EWI of Des Moines. The criteria for this award include the following:

• Chapter sustains a minimum of 25 member firms with a net annual growth. The member firms must include a minimum of 25% each: small firms (1-50 employees); medium firms (51-200 employees); and large firms (200+ employees). The remaining 25% can be a combination of all three classifications totaling 100%.

• Member firm retention of 90% or more annually. • The Chapter has an established monthly marketing/public relations initiative with

relevant presence in social media venues. • There is an executive engagement program that includes an Executive Advisory

Board comprised of at least three member firm executives. • Chapter holds an Executive Appreciation program and provides quarterly

communication with all executives. • At least one Chapter representative serves on a Corporate Committee. • The Chapter has a minimum of nine professional and philanthropic related

programs yearly. • Financial reporting is 100% timely and Chapter operates under a balanced

budget. • The Chapter awards at least one ASIST or EWISP scholarship annually.

November 2014

While some of the criteria may seem easy to attain, there are other areas in which we really need to work on as a chapter. Your chapter board and I are committed to achieving this goal!

At this year’s LCAM, we also were introduced to the EWI Collegiate Program. Ten members of the EWI Collegiate Chapter from the University of Missouri were present at LCAM to be officially introduced as the charter member of this new division for EWI. These young women are led by President Lindsay Pierce, a former EWISP Corporate scholarship recipient. They are 50 members strong and growing! It was so energizing to speak to these young women who have so much ahead of them. They operate their EWI Collegiate chapter much like we operate our own chapter. They have chapter bylaws to follow. They contribute to their community through various service projects. And, their focus is to graduate from college and sell EWI to their future employer so that they can continue their membership in our organization. The goal of EWI is to expand the collegiate program in other cities, specifically cities with an existing EWI chapter. They are definitely the future of EWI!

At the annual meeting, which was on the last day of the conference, the delegates for each chapter were given the opportunity to elect the members of the 2014-15 Corporate Nominating Committee, review and approve the 2014-2015 budget, review the findings from the ad-hoc committee on the individual membership classification, and vote on the Bylaws revisions. The individual membership topic drew the most attention and discussion during the conference. An individual member is a member that pays for his or her own membership dues instead of the individual’s firm. Individual members therefore cannot promote their firm. EWI was built on firm memberships and thus, when a representative left the company, the firm’s membership remained intact, and the firm named a new replacement representative. Some chapters felt this classification of membership is vitally important to their survival because of their intense need for growth. The provision of including the individual membership classification passed via a Bylaws amendment at LCAM. Thus, each chapter has the option of including the Individual Member class of membership. This individual member shall be an employee of a business which is not a current member firm of the Chapter. The Corporate dues and assessments for the Individual Member and a Member Firm will be the same, as are member benefits and voting rights .

As a Chapter, we will vote on the issue and have an opportunity to discuss this at our November membership meeting (Wednesday, November 12th, Kapiolani Community College, Ka’ikena Dining Room). Be at November’s meeting to voice your thoughts and concerns over this classification and also to cast your vote over this very important issue. If the measure passes here in Honolulu, this membership classification will begin January 1, 2015.

Next year’s LCAM will be held September 23rd – 26th in Tulsa, Oklahoma! Maegan and I hope that you will join us so that we may continue to learn, grow, and advance EWI Honolulu to great heights!
