OUR WORLD TODAY

1 billion lack clean water

2.6 billion lack adequate sanitation

1.4 billion have no access to electricity

2.7 billion rely on biomass energy for cooking

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Despite much progress in the field of international development, humanity continues to face tremendous global challenges. Water problems such as access to safe drinking water and reliable sanitation affect about half of the world’s population.  Nearly 1.1 billion people do not have access to clean drinking water. Two point six billion people do not have access to proper sanitation. An even more disturbing fact is that unsafe water, inadequate sanitation and lack of hygiene claim the lives of 1.6 million children under the age of five every year.   The world’s energy story isn’t much better. About 1.4 billion people lack access to direct electricity. Two point seven billion people still rely on traditional cooking methods utilizing biomass energy. We all know that cooking shouldn’t kill. But it is estimated that the household air pollution resulting from biomass use will result in more than 1.5 million deaths per year by 2030.   These statistics reveal a dire reality, but there’s still good news to share.

A community of world-changers

EWB-USA unites

13,800volunteer members

to engineer a better world.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Started in 2002, University of Colorado at Boulder, Bernard Amadei EWB-USA spearheads a movement of 13,800 incredibly resourceful and driven volunteer members that have the knowledge and willingness to address every single one of the potentially deadly problems I just told you about. Our volunteer members are the boots on the ground that make our vision to build a better world a reality. They are instrumental in how EWB-USA is structured and how we implement projects. Who are EWB-USA volunteer members? 10,028 of our volunteer members are college students.3,808 of our volunteer members are professionals. Our volunteer members are more than engineers; they are college students, business professionals, architects, homemakers, academics and innovators. They are emerging leaders.

OUR MISSION

EWB-USA supports community-driven development programs worldwide by collaborating with local partners to design and implement sustainableengineering projects, while creating transformative experiences and responsible leaders.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
EWB-USA’s mission is twofold: We collaborate with local partners to design and build sustainable engineering projects. Ultimately, we build stronger communities by empowering them with the capacity to meet their basic human needs. (2) EWB-USA has greatly invested in building a legacy that matters here at home, too: The creation of the global leader. EWB-USA projects offer transformative experiences for volunteers, and their enriched global perspectives produce better students and better employees.

WHAT WE DOProject work

EWB-USA is engineering change in more than 45 developing countries including:

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Our volunteer members work to achieve a vision of a world in which all communities have the capacity to meet their basic human needs. This vision is actively pursued by engaging in community-driven development programs. Community Development ApproachInstead of trying to find a community where a certain technology can be implemented, EWB-USA programs start with a community that has identified their needs and has requested support from EWB-USA. EWB-USA chapters develop a partnership with a community that lasts at least five years. Both the chapter and community provide equal input in the development effort and each partner contributes to the success of the program. The chapter must work with the community to implement projects within a program that can be sustained by the community in the long term. The community must have the financial, administrative, technical, labor and material resources available to operate and maintain the installed facilities on a long term basis without outside assistance.

WHAT WE DOProject types

Civil Works Information Systems

Sanitation

Structures

EWB-USA volunteer members implement 450 projects around the world.

There are seven EWB-USA project types:

Water Energy

Agriculture

Presenter
Presentation Notes
To ensure quality control and quality assurance of all our projects, each EWB-USA project is supported by professional engineers and a logistics team that assist the chapter in ensuring that a safe, well-designed and sustainable project will be implemented with the partnering community. This engagement teaches soft skills overlooked in traditional engineering curricula, such as: Leadership Project Management Cross-cultural Communication Systems Thinking In 2013, EWB-USA will take our investment in our volunteers and projects one step further with the release of the first two modules of the of EWB-USA Education and Certification Programs.

“…A friend, Gloria Upchurch, knew the owner of a group of game lodges in Tanzania. Willy Chambulo, who is one of the heroes of this story, also owns a tour guide company called Kibo Guides. Gloria and I arranged our trip with Kibo Guides and went to Tanzania in June of 2009 looking for the inspiration to launch our mission. On the western slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro near a Kibo Guides lodge, Kambiya Tembo, we were introduced to an influential Maasai midwife, YaYa, and within an hour the mission was clear”- D. The Water Situation in November 2013

• Wet months 2.9 liters per person per day

• During the dry months 1.7 liters per day per person.

Does not include adult livestock and the Maasai will go without so their cattle can drink

Population of 550 adults, without differentiating between the 300 adults and 250 children.

Presentation Notes
“The basic principle as recommended by Engineers Without Borders--USA and other organizations including the World Health Organization is that communities need to be involved in selecting their water system from the start of the process. To achieve this, it is recommended that several feasible options be designed and offered for consideration and modification by the community.” (EWB-USA Garbely, 2005)

Technical Scope of TZ Water Project

Scope 26 l/p/d for 550 individuals every day of the yearwith a 4.05% population growth = 16 lpm (4.3 gpm)

This does not include “25 l/lu/d for livestock”; “A bull can drink 25 liters a day”, said an Olmoti Maasai

Basis of Assumptions (from Rural Monduli) •Average is 9.2 litres per person per day (l/p/d)•Recommended 25l/p/d •Expressed community demand of 26 l/p/d in rural areas for domestic use•Population growth between 3.8 and 4.3%

Goals Achieved

•That project is community driven and where a water board is feasible

•How the aasai will pay

•Where the teams can stay with reasonable costs

•What the water quality is and how unacceptable levels can be addressed

•Who we can partner or collaborate with other than the Hai District

- alternate lodging owners - village leaders

- Sylvester, manager at lodge - district medical personnel

- Arusha rotary club - local suppliers
