INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION

Total number of PC users in India is over 80 million.Total number of MOBILE users in india is 554.8 million. As many as 3000 personal computers ; 8,500 mobile handsets; 5.500 tv sets and are dismantled in the Delhi every day for reuse of their component parts and materials.1 WHAT IS ELECTRONIC WASTE?It may be defined as,computers, office electronic equipment, entertainment devices and many other electronic or electrical devices which are unwanted broken and discarded by their original users are known as E Waste or Electronic Waste.E Waste is a popular informal name for electroinc products coming to the end of their Useful Life. As per the hazardous wastes (management and handling) rules 2003. WHY SO MUCH ADO ABOUT E WASTE? An estimated so million tons of E Waste are produced each year. The USA discards 30 millions computers each year and 100 million phones are disposed of in Europe each year. The Environmental protection agency estimates that only 15-20% of E Waste is recycled , the rest of these electronics go directly into landfills and incinerators.WHY SO MUCH ADO ABOUT E WASTE?

4. E Waste contains several different substances and chemical many of which are toxic and are likely to create adverse impact on environment and health ,if not handled properly.5. However , classification of E Waste as hazardous or otherwise shall depend upon the extent of presence of hazardous constituents in it.

Toxic Substances Present In E-Waste

1.LEAD:Lead can be found in circuit boards and monitor cathode ray tubes (CRT).Lead is particularly dangerous to the environment because of its ability to accumulate and persist in plants, animals and micro-organisms .The bioaccumulation of lead in the human body is particularly harmful because its primarytarget is the central nervous system.2.PLASTICS:The most abundant component of e-waste is plastics.Plastic comprise almost 23% of a typical desktop computer. They are used for insulation , cables and housing for all electronic devices , the variety of products available for recovery complicates the de manufacturing process. 3. MERCURY:Mercuey is the most prevalent toxic metal found in e-waste. It is in circuit boards, switches, medical equipment, lamps, mobile phones and batteries. Mercury transforms into methyl mercury in water ,where it can accumulate in living organisms typically vai fish, concentrating in large fish and humans at the top of th food chain. Mercury is readily absorbed by the human body. How These Become E-Waste?1. Change and Advancement in Technology.2. Changes in Fashion ,style and Status.3. Changing in Configuration.4. Attractive offers from manufacturers.5. Small life of equipments.6. Not taking precaution while handling them.

WHY E-WASTE IS A PROBLEM?

1. Composed of Hazardous materials.2. Electronic products are difficult to Recycle.3. Products are quickly obsolete and discarded.4. Most E-Waste goes to landfills.5. Most recyclers dont recycle, they export.EFFECT OF E-WASTE:

On Environment:1.Pollution of ground water.2. A adification of soil.3. Air pollution.4. E-Waste accounts for 40% of the lead and 75% of the heavy metals found in landfills. ON HUMAN HEALTH:DNA damageLung cancerDamage to heart ,liver and spleen.Chronic damage to the brain.Asthmatic bronchitic.RECYCLING OF E-WASTE:

*Disassembly / Dismantling:Disassembly is the systematic removal of components, parts,a group of parts or a subassembly from a product which is in E-Waste.*Upgrading:It includes comminuting and separation of materials using mechanical/physical and/or metallurgical processing . Method to recover materials include incineration and refining.*Materials Recovery:The material are recover by recycling facilities .The plastic, glass, metal can be recovered by sprting them before mixing with other waste.ADVANTAGES OF RECYCLING E-WASTE:

1.Reduction of need for landfills.2.Asset recovery.3.Resate and reuse.4.Creation of jobs.

REUSE OF E-WASTE:

1. Reuse is the environmentally preferable option for managing older electronics equipment.2. By extending the useful life of old products , reuse conserves the energy and raw materials needed to manufacture the pollution.3. Reuse also gives people who cannot afford new products access to electronics equipment at reduced or at low cost.

ADVANTAGES OF RE-USE

1.Electronic equipments like computers, cell phone etc.can be reused.2.This method also reduces the volume of E-Waste generation.3.No wastage of time and money.CONCLUSION:

1. As far as e-waste is concerned, it has emerged as one of the fastest growing waste streams world wide today.2. Electronics equipment is one of the largest know sources of heavy metals without effective collection reuse and recycling systems, they will be dangerous to environment.3. Reuse and recycling of electronics equipment is a beneficial alternative than disposal.4. Product design by using safe and environment friendly raw materials and most emerging technologies.5. Awarness of e-waste.6. Implementation of legislation.
