EVOLUTION QUESTION 1
In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of media
products?
BLACK SWAN MOOD BOARD
THE BLACK ROSE MOOD BOARD
MOOD BOARDS
From showing snapshots of Black Swan (a very
inspirational film for this product) I have tried to
show the massive similarities between the two films.
They use similar colour schemes and far more
techniques to enhance the films intensity and
plausibility and this all provokes the clear
physiological flaws in both Nina and Natalie
Harland.
LOCATION AND SETTING
The locations we used for the film were very
appropriate in trying to get across what we wanted
to portray. Often we would’ve used dimly lit areas
which aren’t conventional for people to be in. The
forest that we shot in was one of the best scenes as
it is dim it is mysterious and more than anything it is
incredibly stereotypical of horror films, this shows
how we tried to relate our product
COSTUME AND PROPS
The costume we used was based on Nina from the
Black Swan we made the realisation that the reason
The Black Swan was intriguing was because she
seemed so normal and didn’t look or dress (at the
beginning) too unsteady so we followed this and
dressed our character Natalie in normal clothes to
add to the mystery and suspense
MYSTERY & SUSPENSE
Thriller films have a tendency to create an
atmosphere of mystery and suspense. They do this to
draw the audience in more and try and let them
attempt to solve the mystery and ride on the
suspense.
The main character has a lot of mystery to her, she
doesn’t look or seem abnormal at first but you slowly
learn more and more of her past and it becomes
more mysterious
SLOW AND FAST EDITING
The pace in a thriller film ranges vastly
Often it is slow and building up the tension and mystery
but the pace can differ massively
Often in the last third of a thriller film the pace will speed
up and try and get to the conclusion of it all
We used pace well and would speed up during flash backs
but the rest of the shots are slow and building tension
COLOUR
The colour in thrillers is often dimly lit to try and
symbolise the mood
The dim colour can create suspense as it provides an eerie
feel to the scene often
To follow the themes of other thrillers we would use dimly
lit areas and use abode photoshop to do colour corrections
Finally we would go from colour to black and white to
differentiate between the present and past
MUSIC
Often the music in a thriller is slow and dramatic
using instruments such as violins and other
orchestral instruments
Then as the mood and intensity heightens the
music will build up in pace and different instruments
will be used
We’ve used our music well as we use children's
music creating the connection between Natalie and
children
HYBRID IDENTITY
The Black Rose is a mix between thriller and horror using
both of the genres to heighten the intensity of the film
A horror film often just shows fears that are commonly had
by people and are portrayed in ways you can’t imagine in
this respect the thought of a paedophilic women that stalks
children etc. is the horror side
The mystery building up and intensity growing adds to the
thriller side of the genre
